"The Black Hart of St. Paul will replace what’s reported to be the oldest gay bar in the city, The Town House at 1415 University Avenue West. The bar is near the under-construction, new stadium for the Minnesota United FC. The Town House’s owner Holly Monnett was reportedly looking for a local owner to take over the bar she had operated for forty years when Wes Burdine reached out to her, according to the Pioneer Press." - Joy Summers

Fun gay bar. Primarily lesbian crowd but very welcoming to anyone. There's a cabaret in the back. Service here is friendly. It's very clean and well maintained. They have very basic bar food but it's quite good! Drinks are fairly priced and poured just right. A hidden gem! The owner here cares a lot about her establishment and it shows. It's a very comfortable place to hang out during the non-prime hours but you can really get your party on a Friday or Saturday night. Check out the drag shows here too. Great acts without the pretense of some of the larger establishments in the area. The stage is small but it makes for a much more intimate setting and you can get up close and personal with the queens. Overall a really great bar!

I have gone to this bar about 10 times. I liked it a lot. Then I had one of the most miserable experiences I've ever had with an establishment. They get paid $100 by a towing company per car they let them tow from their lot, then the towing company charges $300 to the people they tow. I sober drove a friend's car home last night, and left mine there. Left it there for about 5 hours. They don't even use the lot during the day. What a sleazy business practice. That practice just encourages drunk driving and is completely unethical to their customers. Never going to the Town House again. Please support sober driving and don't go their either.

If this was five years ago, I'd be giving this place a four stars. The only reason I'd dock it a star was because of Monday Men's Night not being as good as it used to be. Unfortunately, I cannot say that this place is as good as it used to be. It has gone downhill in a few ways. I used to say that this was always a place to have a good time. Now, it's a hit and miss. The reason I say hit and miss is because of the overwhelming level of political correctness. Often, I'd be visiting this place, and there'd be such an abundance of it from both staff and customers that it get to be uncomfortable being in there. I'd have to leave earlier than I had originally planned. I go to a bar for a good time, not to watch every little thing I say or do as closely as I often feel I have to. To their benefit, it's not like that every night. There are some nights that I'd be getting great customer service, feeling comfortable, and having a good time by myself or with my friends. I've been there for their Wednesday night drag shows many times. They are quite a talented bunch. They know how to entertain a crowd and do great numbers. My favorite drag queen there is Jamie Monroe, especially her Liza Minnelli numbers (I'm a Liza fan). My only complaint about the drag shows is Gucci Velour. Every time I've seen her there, she has been extremely rude to friends and me for no reason. I've seen her do the same with many of the other patrons. Her self-righteousness also does not need to be displayed when she's working (she's also a hypocrite). I've made multiple complaints to the bar about her. Besides, she is a horrible performer. She needs to go! I've been there a few times for Bingo. It is superb! I love that their money goes to HIV funding. I'm 100% for the cause. Aside from that, I've always had a blast playing with them. Overall, the quality of the drinks depends on the bartender. Heather, Trent, and Mickey are the best at them. They are also polite to the patrons and me. I've carried some pretty good conversations with some of them during their slow times. Sometimes, this can be a good place to go for a good time. I just have to observe a little more about when the best times are to go there, assuming the time frames are consistent. I hope the overall quality of the bar improves back to what it was five years ago.

Good drink prices, karoke thursdays, drag on the weekends. Bartenders here makes the drinks STRONG after 9pm so be careful and watch them if you're not into that, I personally appreciate it don't have to buy as many drinks

The Town House is great for a number of reasons. The staff is friendly, the drinks are pretty strong, the music is usually pretty good, etc. The only drawback to this place is that it's small and gets CROWDED on busy nights, especially on the dance floor. If that's what you're looking for on a certain night, though, go for it! The Town House is one of my favorite GLBT establishments in the Twin Cities.

No longer cash only, the Blackhart's new owner is open for suggestions and very friendly. If you have an honest concern, the owner, Wes, is all ears and is open to talking to people about it.

Good location, parking lot, always shows and activities going on. Really laid back divey queer bar right off of the light rail. Cash bar, reasonable prices and fried bar food available

They're alright but if you identify female they make you wait longer for your drinks, I tried to get my drinks from the bar (I am trans and identify female) but the gay bartenders make the "different" individuals wait longer than the GAY inspectors so I found that a little uncool.
