Racist Facebook Posts Attributed to Detroit Restaurant Owner Spark Outrage | Eater Detroit

"This downtown bar, also owned by the same restaurateur, has faced renewed criticism not only for the recent alleged racist and violent social-media messages attributed to its owner but for past business practices: when the tavern moved into the former Centaur Bar space in 2019, the owner was widely criticized for attempting to abruptly evict building residents, many of whom were low-income. The recent online exchanges—characterized by commenters as racist, violent, and hostile toward protesters and those raising COVID-19 concerns—spurred negative comments, one-star reviews, and community backlash similar to that directed at the owner’s other establishments; the owner maintains he was reacting to being attacked online and says his family has received threats." - Brenna Houck

Google
Town Pump Tavern quickly became our favorite local bar during our stay in Black Mountain. It’s got the perfect dive bar vibes—cheap drinks, good service, and a super cute back patio to hang out on. No frills, just a laid-back, fun spot to unwind. Loved it!

Had great night, got lucky randomly walking in for live music and it was amazing artist. The bartender Kenrda was awesome made me feel welcomed.

Outdoor & indoor seating - does not matter - the service was great & food even better. Glad we went and looking forward to going back again.

Google
NO FOOD. The beer selection is super solid and the drinks get you where you're trying to go. The one bartender made my paloma with tajin, which I was not expecting, and it was HEAT. If you're looking for a good dive bar this is the spot.

Me and my friends went around Saturday, around 11 after deciding to choose a closer bar than an asheville one. I don't know if we upset the bartender somehow but he was pretty rude to my friend; she just asked for a drink recommendation as she isnt super familiar with bars. I don't know if it was too busy or something but he was pretty hostile and just said no pretty rudely. We ended up leaving after the whole "No" situation as it made my friend pretty upset. I would understand if it was super busy, but it really wasn't. Maybe we pissed him off, or it was a bad night. I don't know. All in all, the better part was that the drinks were pretty average price range wise -- me and my other friend got our drinks (a beer and a dirty shirley) for 9 dollars. If we did something wrong I would like to know what it was so we can avoid in the future.

Google
This place was just what we were looking for. Kind of quirky and divey. They had the beer we wanted, and it was fun to stop there for a drink before dinner.

Yelp
Had my experience at Town Pump comprised hearing some evangelical bluegrass guitar player and a singer play weird spiritually inspired tunes while calling people who say, "Cool beans," weird, my experience at Town Pump would have been solid. They had great drink prices -- Jameson and ginger doubles, yes please! The bartender was friendly and attentive. The crowd was laid back. The dollar bills on ceiling are the typical fun touch as well as the dart boards and other games available, with a nice outside deck. But those two musicians saying that people who say, "Cool beans" are weird while thanking the lord... no thanks. No thanks. I'll come back when they're not there.

Yelp
Bartender was rude. She was not hospitable in the slightest. I cannot believe that this place even employed her based on how unenjoyful she was.

Yelp
This place was just what we were looking for. Cheap draft beer and a helluva kids menu while it was cold as hell outside. Could use bigger TVs than a 22" computer monitor at the bar and beers from the cooler are slightly colder than air temp but we can't wait to come back. Especially when it's cold or snowy.

Yelp
The bar has been renovated, updated, and has new bartenders. for a couple years now. It was used in the movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Now a welcoming local tap to hang out at.

Yelp
Love this place so much, always love coming here. The bartender Jen is the best! She always gives the best customer service! She was cracking me up with the best stories! Always kept my glass full and left me feeling like a princess! If I could give her 10 stars I would!

Yelp
Stopped by for a couple while visiting from out of town. Super friendly staff and great drink selection/prices!

Yelp
Nice little place. We had planned to sit outside but were told they had run out of propane. We found distance seating indoors. Wait staff was friendly and attentive. Get selection of local beer. Some cocktail specials. The one thing I found odd was the decor or lack there of. It's a quaint mountain town with lots of country charm, none of which was evident here. The interior was quite sterile.

Yelp
Gem! Spacious dive bar filled with antiques, taxidermy, dollar bills on the ceiling, $2 beer (for real) stage for bands, ironic logo, and no pretensions. If I live here this would be my jam.

Yelp
This place is a classic. If you like "divey" pubs, Town Pump is for you! It's in an old Greyhound Bus station, full of antiques and memorabilia. Friendly barkeep and customers too. Unique is a large 45 star flag on the wall. Have fun trying to identify the five states that joined the union since. No fair using your smart phone to Google the answer!

Yelp
This is one of the best damn dive bars, gin palaces, or juke joints in which I've had the pleasure to get schnockered during my louche and misspent life. Animal trophies? Check. Dozens of dollar bills stuck to the ceiling? You know it. Obscure but intriguing regional beer that tastes of licorice? Even so. Plus, this past Monday evening, a perfectly delightful, danceable, in-the-pocket tight bluegrass band. (Update: it was Kort McCumber & McCumberland Gap. See them live if you can!) Now, don't all of you go at once - it is smoky, Angelenos...

Yelp
All the best people with all the best ways to enjoy the area. I heaven.... great beers and the Appalachian salad is to die for.

Yelp
Seriously the coolest staff you could meet. They treat you like family from day one. The pickled duck eggs are amazing and there's a smoking bison head on the wall. I highly recommend this spot to touring musicians.

Yelp
I had such bad service today not only did I have to pay to join but the gentlemen that was bartending was not very friendly. I asked him for another shot and he said ok. Well I never got my shot. He was more worried about his tips then me and my friend. I will not recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
This is a great local dive bar to visit. Brad was very nice and I enjoyed chatting with him while I drank. They are pet friendly, so that is an added bonus...lot's of dogs came in while I was there...I loved it! Locals were very pleasant and welcoming! I will go back!! So much fun throwing my dollar bill up on the wall. If you go, you must do it too!

Yelp
The bar that doesn't try to hide that it's a bar. Need to sit and cry in your whiskey? Need to meet new friends over a few pints of beer? Need to listen to really cool music? You've found the place! BEST BAR IN TOWN hands down.

Yelp
Tim and I have been beving here since we bought a house near Old Fort. It's all a local watering hole should be - friendly, ambient, comfortable, welcoming - you get it. No food - only beer and wine but the juke box is free and the selection is eclectic and good and Melanie is the most interesting bartender ever - just go and see! She will wow you and make you laugh. Tell her Lynne and Tim said hi!

Patti C.

Yelp
We had the BEST time here! The band was fantastic, the service was great and the staff awesome! We will be regular visitors when ever we're in town. Try it you'll love it! Patti & Greg Apollo Beach, Fl

Yelp
David H needs to brush up on his gun laws - especially since he insists on carrying one everywhere he goes. This is not the only establishment he has decided to boycott for the same reason. This is for you David H. The first and last sentence give you the "why" you can't bring your weapon : 2. Assemblies and Establishments North Carolina law also prohibits any person carrying a gun, rifle, or pistol into any assembly where a fee has been charged for admission or into any establishment where alcoholic beverages are both sold and consumed. Again, the individuals exempted from carrying concealed weapons cited in paragraph III. A. of this publication are similarly exempted under this law. The following may also carry a firearm in these areas: a. The owner or lessee of the premises or business; b. A person participating in the event, if he/she is carrying a gun, rifle, or pistol with the permission of the owner, lessee, person, or organization sponsoring the event; c. A person registered or hired as a security guard by the owner, lessee, person, or organization sponsoring the event; or d. A person carrying a handgun if the person has a valid concealed handgun permit or is exempt from obtaining a permit pursuant to G.S. § 14-415.25. Note, however, this allowance does not allow a person to carry a handgun on any premises where the person in legal possession or control has posted a conspicuous notice prohibiting the carrying of a concealed handgun on the premises.
