The Best South Shore Bar Pizza in Massachusetts | Eater Boston

"Like Lynwood, Town Spa has its fair share of enthusiastic followers. Its most iconic pizza is topped with pickles. (It sounds weird; it is a little weird; it is also delicious.) Locals will tell you to dip your pizza in the restaurant’s popular honey mustard. Town Spa also offers mail-order pizza, which is a nice treat for anyone who’s moved away from the South Shore." - Terrence Doyle

We happened to be in Stoughton and I have heard the hype around Town Spa and wanted to check it out. I went with my family and we all liked our food. The waitress was good and I liked the atmosphere. It is cash only but they have ATMs in the takeout area of the restaurant. My pizza was good but I don't know if it was the best I have ever had. The kids enjoyed their Sandwich and chicken fingers. My wife also liked her Chicken Caesar wrap. I would say overall a great place to go with solid food. If thin bar style pizza is your thing you will love this place. Also added points for having Pepsi... I know I am the exception I prefer Pepsi.

Google
This is the place for South Shore bar pizza. But don’t sleep on their chicken tenders with honey mustard. That honey mustard is so good they sell it by the pint! Just wish they accepted credit cards…

A favorite in the family, been coming to Town Spa(or eating their pizza at my Grandma's) since I was a young lad. Very big menu but not a lot to go wrong on, when I went we got the appetizer sampler and that was great. Family favorites for pizza are just plain cheese, Feta with cheddah', and the mushroom pizza. Great spot whether you are a local or just passing through; as someone who resides on the west coast, I dream of Town Spa pizza(and occasionally have some shipped out to me because they are so good 👍🏼).

Curious to see what all the buzz was about, I recently visited this long-standing local hangout that's clearly popular with the neighborhood crowd. Unfortunately, my experience didn’t quite live up to the hype. To start with the positives: our server was excellent—friendly, attentive, and definitely the highlight of the visit. However, the rest of the experience left a lot to be desired. The restaurant is cash only, which felt inconvenient in this day and age. The menu is extremely limited, offering just pizza, salad, and sandwiches. That’s it. I tried the pizza, which came out as a greasy, thin-crust, personal-sized portion, lacking much flavor. They do have beer, cocktails, and wine. While the restaurant is clearly a staple in the community—judging by the consistently full parking lot—the draw seems to be more about the bar scene than the food. The main bar room is loud, making it difficult to have a conversation, so it’s definitely not ideal for a date night. They do offer takeout, which might be a better option if you're determined to try it. Overall, unless you're in it for the drinks or nostalgic vibes, there are better food spots elsewhere.

Google
An old-school institution in the Stoughton area. The prices are a little high for the small size of the pizzas. They only have one size of pizza. I think it's about 10 or 12 in. It's cash only. Leave those cards and electronic payment methods behind. The pizzas were very good. Good variety of toppings available - including some unusual ones like broccoli and banana peppers. Take out was quick and efficient.

Google
A classic! One of the best bar pizzas around. Cash only but there’s an ATM on site. The sweet potato fries are amazing too!

Gopal Chopra

Google
Love the vibe, super cool family spot for excellent pizza and the world’s best crinkle cut fries - service with a smile - going to be a regular here as the gluten free cauliflower base was outstanding!

Disappointing to say the least. Have been to Town Spa many times and up until last night, it was our favorite spot for bar pizza. We sat at the bar and ordered beers, Greek salad, an appetizer and three different pizzas. All three of our pizzas were floppy, the cheese sloughed off creating this mangled mess. Two out of the three were supposed to be crispy. The edges were barely crispy at all and the rest of the pizza was so undercooked it was almost raw. The Greek salad was delicious as always and that was the only redeeming part of this meal. When we got the bill, we discovered we had been overcharged for sauce and a beer, but after having such a terrible experience, we decided it wasn't worth arguing, paid and left. Sadly, we will not be returning to Town Spa anymore. Someone else said it best: the pizza has really gone downhill.

Yelp
Stopped in for a pizza and a beer Ordered a garlic sausage with burnt edges Ordered a cup beef stew... stew was excellent and meal in itself. Pizza crust I was disappointed.. soggy, and not crisp as last visits? It looked cooked enough on bottom. Beers reasonable 3.50 a draft . Maybe an off day for pizza ?

Yelp
Town spa is my favorite bar pizza in the south shore. They always deliver the same great taste every time. My friend and I always split a ham and pineapple pizza, and a meatball pizza. It's the perfect combo to us! We have also tried classic cheese, and pepperoni as well. The sauce flavor is SO good. We also sometimes get chicken fingers and have to have it with the honey mustard dipping sauce, it's also good to dip the pizza crust in too! The service is friendly and fast. If you're getting takeout on a weekend, it will definitely be a bit of a wait but it's 100% worth it.

Yelp
Best pizza on the planet! I grew up in Stoughton and thus have been enjoying Town Spa my entire life.

Yelp
The best, Jerry! The best!! Old school pan style pizza. The place looks like it is stuck in the 80s and it is... cash only!

Yelp
This is bar pizza! It's the one that put it all on the map. It's the best. There is no other way to put it. There are others who claim this but Town Spa is it. The

Yelp
Food is great and pizza is amazing but if you're with a large party or want to get out it might be tough. There's a few high tops around the bar they will serve drinks too but if you want food everyone must have a seat. Makes it difficult if people want to stand and hangout.

Yelp
True Score: 3.5 Stars The tales of town spa are true. The pizza is great when you get a good one. Nevertheless that is a hit or miss chance because the pizza is never cooked the same. some days its doughy others its crispy. Town Spa can't we get a consistent cook? Tip: Huge bar, you'll always get a seat Tip 2: Get a Greek Salad Tip 3: Great Dressings It is inconsistent though, the pizza anyway. Thanks

Yelp
What can you say. Place is absolutely a mad hose but the food is great. Got a cheeseburger club sorry no pic. Can't beat it great food for a great price

Yelp
Hardly the same family friendly pizza spot I remember growing up. Bitter as the last time we ate there the waitress was very rude and couldn't even smile or acknowledge our 18 month old staring up smiling at her. I love their pizza, but have realized there are other bar style pizza spots around with the same tasting pizza.
google avatar

Fatboy S.

Yelp
The 3 1/2 star rating seems accurate to me. Average pizza and food. Service is average as well. Their honey mustard sauce is bomb however.
google avatar

Kevin O.

Yelp
Pizza had too much oil, and it seems like they're using cheaper cheese and other ingredients.

Warren B.

Yelp
Born and raised on these pizzas. Everyone in Stoughton has. In fact when we travel, we use the Spa as comparison and guide for possible acceptance at other pizza joints. I know there are a lot of great pizzas in the south shore but for all of you who may complain, do not ! Living out of state since 82, there is no other pizza places that can compare to the south shore. I've traveled and lived in 6 states. Be happy you live in Stoughton and/or the surrounding areas for pizza.

Yelp
Decent pizza. Just got the cheese to try their base pizza; sauce, cheese and dough were tasty and balanced well but I don't like the pan pizza style (bad crust) I prefer a tossed crust. Disappointing tenders. Not very meaty and the coating and texture reminded me of a frozen chicken nugget. Our server Matt tho was very nice and friendly (great service). The inside was way larger than expected and tons of parking.

Yelp
Barbara was our wonderful server, she made us feel like family! She has worked there for 31 years and she treats each customer like gold. We got the sampler appetizer - the wing dings were outstanding and the house made honey mustard sauce was delicious. We also got our hamburger bar pizza laced and crispy and dipped the crust into the honey mustard sauce as recommended. YUM! Family friendly place with comfortable booths. 2 parking lots. We got there at 3:30PM on a Saturday (no wait), but when we left at 4:55, the entrance was already filled with people waiting for tables.

Lawrence F.

Yelp
Ate there on Wed 1/22 and the bottom was soggy despite burnt edges. Last time there 5 years ago it was good but not this time.

Yelp
Town Spa has some of the best pizza in the greater Boston area. I was in the area so I topped in again for a pizza. I couldn't tell you anything about their other menu items because I would never get anything else given how amazing their pizza is. I ordered the pizza well done (which I highly recommend) and i came out perfect. I savored every bite. There really is nothing quite like a Town Spa pizza. Their frozen take-home pizzas are very good, but nowhere near as good as a freshly made on at the restaurant. I only wish I lived closer so that I could go there more often. If you're in the area, stop in and get a pizza, well done. You will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Mixed feelings. I want to love this place, I really do. It has all the qualities of an old-school joint that I love. However, my husband and I had a less-than-stellar experience here recently... We haven't been here in years and came in on a Friday night. As we were about to sit at the bar, the bartender informed us there was a wait for bar seats. Ummm WHAT?? I've never been to a place where the bar wasn't first come, first served...until now! It was such a turn-off, we almost left but we waited it out and were eventually seated. We ordered what we normally get for takeout: chicken tenders with honey mustard, a garlic pizza and a "rotating" pizza. This time our rotating pizza was buffalo chicken. I was surprised it did not come with any dipping sauce so I asked for ranch and was given a pouch bag of ranch (the kind that normally comes with salads) which was another turn-off of the night. I do want to take a minute to rave about the honey mustard sauce (if you know, you know). This is their own homemade recipe and it is out-of-this-world fantastic. Thank god they bottle and sell it as I think we will stick with takeout in the future after this recent experience...

Yelp
Had to go get a pizza because their pizza is one of the best. Been going here for years and years so was surprised when I also ordered the fries and they were horrible. Usually crinkle cut and crispy but these were not. We sat at bar so service was good and as always it has the really good pizza.

Yelp
Have been a loyal customer of Town Spa for over 20 years. However the other night as my wife and I were waiting in the bar area right across from the check in area. I was leaning against the wall and noticed a small roach crawling up the wall. I advised the host and she had a bus boy kill it. I immediately cancelled my table and left. To the owner "get on a pest treatment plan"!!!! You make millions over there! Why do you not have a pest treatment plan!!! WTF!! I will never return until the owner handles his roach problem! Very sad not to be able to eat the best pizza in MA anymore cause the owner is too cheap to be on a treatment program.

Yelp
Amazing pizza!! Recommended by a colleague and was not disappointed. Personal pizzas with plenty of toppings to choose from. Crust is fantastic (try the garlic sauce). There's also salads, apps, and daily entree specials so you don't have to get pizza if you don't want. Our server was sassy and on top of it (not complaining); we had a large party and surprisingly our food didn't take too long. We each got a beer and a multi-topping pizza and it was about $20 per person. Cash only! Will only seat full parties! Automatic 18% gratuity for parties over 8! Would return.

Yelp
Fabulous pizza. Different areas have their own regional pizza styles and suburban Boston is no exception. I've had New York City pizza https://www.yelp.com/biz/waldys-wood-fired-pizza-and-penne-new-york-5?hrid=Q2wz0qmHsNVZ7AGyGkMUrw and Chicago pizza https://www.yelp.com/biz/pizzeria-due-chicago?hrid=D5s8AwOB0Z2iQRJUlRKyuQ and Northeast Pennsylvania pizza https://www.yelp.com/biz/sizzle-pi-kingston-2?hrid=dGw4QpgEXSBznzPKtxQmOQ and Saint Louis pizza https://www.yelp.com/biz/imos-pizza-saint-louis-35?hrid=CKKfNQOG1yi3RFYqZuCC6w and recently, New Haven pizza https://www.yelp.com/biz/modern-apizza-new-haven?hrid=4mhT20uyxPj-EfiXhlwZ8w. Stoughton's "bar pizza" is a different style and it's delicious. I was meeting up with friends who live in the area. It was a brief wait and then we had a big booth. Chicken wings to start were okay. "Buffalo style" did have some heat to them but the breading came off in the sauce. revealing medium meaty wings. Tasty and messy. (The pot of blue cheese might be buried under the tissue paper - dig for it.) Our pizzas arrived shortly after. I had the meatball with extra garlic and it was delicious. A solid serving that was enough for one if you're a big boy like me. A great covering of toppings so the pie was not wet. A little thicker than "thin" crust but not as floppy as New York or as deep as Chicago. It is delicious, I think this is called "bar" or "pub" pizza. Town Spa will not seat incomplete parties and that's cool. There's no reason the restaurant should have you taking up a table especially when other diners are waiting. Also, they ONLY ACCEPT CASH so be prepared for that. [Review 17957 overall - 1132 in Massachusetts - 1478 of 2022.]

Yelp
My family has been coming here for as long as I can remember. This place NEVER disappoints. The pizza is as good as it gets.

Yelp
As a relative newbie to South Shore Style Bar Pizza (I'm a transplant from Metro Boston, which I can safely refer to as the "North Shore", simply because it's north of Quincy), I had my first visit to the lively Town Spa. It didn't disappoint, and dare I say, it beats out Cape Cod Pizza as my new SSBP fav. Order burnt edges (or laced edges as they say at The Lynwood) and extra crispy bottom. The pineapple and BACON is great, as is the pepperoni. Didn't have room for a Greek Salad, but they looked huge and amazing. Remember: CASH ONLY. Come prepared, as ATMs often not working.

Cara P.

Yelp
I have never ever had a bad pizza here. Wether you are dining in or doing a take out order you are going to have an amazing night. why you ask? Because you are eating Town Spa Pizza! There's honestly nothing that comes close or compares to eating a greek salad, a side of fries with ketchup and a perfectly cooked pizza with your friends and family here. The restaurant is clean and the staff is friendly.

Yelp
"The best pizza experience", head on over to @town_spa_pizza Stoughton, MA Yes best bar style pizza is a thing and it might be my new favorite Killer apps, can't forget the homemade honey mustard!!! 10/10 had the best experience, from the service, to learning how to play keno and the food... town spa I might be a regular I love how there was pictures of how town spa started and big highlighted moments since it's been open. Being able to see photos of when/ how it all first started. Loved the inside decor old school vibes!! It felt like when you entered the front doors you went back in time to an old time local town pizza spot where families grew up coming to weekly so dinners.

Yelp
I've been here twice over the last few weeks. I had never heard of Town Spa before, but it's one of my bf's favorites (he grew up in Milton and Canton). We finally went a couple of weeks ago and the pizza was really good! I got the sausage and mushroom while he got a bbq chicken pizza. Both were tasty and we were excited to have leftovers for the weekend. The service was a little spotty because the restaurant was backed. Our poor server was running around taking orders, bringing food AND clearing/cleaning tables because the high school boys who were supposed to clear were just standing around and talking to each other. I hope the server got all the tips and didn't have to share. Anyway - also went yesterday at around 3:30 pm on a Sunday. We sat at the bar that time. Quick, friendly service, good pizza and well-priced drinks! This time was pepperoni and mushroom for me and onion for him. I had leftovers the same night! Ha. When I'm craving good pizza and a strong drink, I'll definitely make my way back to Town Spa.

Yelp
Place has gone wayyyyyy down hill in the last 5-7 years. Not even close to the same quality and consistency of the early 2000s. It's still fine but doesn't deserve to be near the best bar pizza conversation. Disappointingly average nowadays.
google avatar

Jenn D.

Yelp
The wait was much shorter than stated. Pizza was exactly what we wanted for bar pizza. Chicken tender for the picky teens and they enjoyed it. Waitress gave us a different table as the hostess tried to squeeze 5 adults in a booth with a chair at the end. She said we wouldn't have room for the pizzas if she kept us there. Thank you for making our dining experience enjoyable.

Alain P.

Yelp
THIS.IS.PIZZAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! This pizza is so good, it might ruin all other food for you. The crust is crunchy, the cheese is flavorful, and the sauce is like a tomato's love letter. You'll dream about it, drool over it, and wonder if you can legally marry it. Best. Pizza. Ever.
google avatar

Jared G.

Yelp
Great pizza and burgers chicken fingers and fries, reason one star short, cash only business but great local spot for beer and pizza
google avatar

Brian G.

Yelp
Very tasty, lots of options! You can order your individual pie (enough for 2) either "floppy" the softer foldable style, or "crispy" kept in the oven a little longer and firmer. Our party of 6 all got the crispy version and enjoyed it! Waitress Becky was great!!
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
We haven't been to Town Spa pizza in a while. We felt the last few times just haven't been that good. We had issues with little girl attitudes who work here and rude waitresses in the past. But today we decided to give it another try. We actually ordered it as take out and sat at the outside seating. That way we didn't have to deal with any wait staff not saying they all are rude I'm sure some are very nice but this is just easier plus we don't have to tip anyone or chase them down for refills since we just bought a 2 liter of soda and sat outside. I grew up eating Town Spa it was really my go to for years and our favorite of bar pizza establishments of all the bar pizza restaurants. So I was happy to see that they nailed it today. Only downfall was it was a little sloppy but that could have been because it was piping hot. The inside is actually very nice and clean good size bar with TVs. But today was just an eat out kind of day. Definitely be back hopefully we can keep the delicious pies coming out perfect.
google avatar

Lori F.

Yelp
Justly celebrated for phenomenal pizza. The Greek salad is good too. No atmosphere in the restaurant but always full. Take-out pizza is great, but eat-in when it comes out of the oven is best.
google avatar

Joie T.

Yelp
I can see why people like it...but it's not for me. It's decent pizza for $10 but certainly not worth the wait. The pizza bottom is just not crispy at all.

William V.

Yelp
We visited on a Sunday right around their opening time. Many of the decorations I remember being at their original location. The food and service were great and I would not hesitate to recommend or visit again. We had a pepperoni and a mushroom pepperoni combo. Both were cooked to perfection and enjoyed. Sizes were just right and prices to me were fair. Bring cash as cards I believe are not accepted here.

Yelp
Flavors - 3.5/5 Textures - 3.8/5 Presentation - 4/5 Value for Money - 4/5 Would return? Yes Must-try: Ask for Pizza EXTRA CRISPY The pizza was really good! I recommend ordering extra crispy - the waitress almost talked me out of it because she said it was going to be too dark - but do it; it doesn't taste burnt. I loved that the toppings are small and well spread out, however, sometimes it's difficult to distinguish flavors. The onion-bacon pizza I ordered tasted great, but it was difficult to taste the onion and the bacon. The best flavor I had was probably the garlic pepperoni! If you have a gluten issue or like to eat low-carb, their cauliflower crust is pretty fantastic! I had it with the spicy chicken buffalo as the topping, and I did not miss the regular pizza at all.

Yelp
Stopped into Town Spa Pizza after a trip to the Bradley Estate in Canton, MA. It was a Friday night at 7:30 and only had a 5 minute wait to get a table for 4. I'm not going to knock the business because I know everyone is looking for workers, but to share our experience on this visit.....Our waitress had zero experience and was terrible. As we placed our drink orders she had no idea what basic brands even were (Tanguay, Blue Moon, Bulleit). She never brought our second round of drinks, dropped off the bill and we asked for boxes for the left over pizza and we never saw her again. We walked up to the kitchen to get boxes and left cash on the table. They are CASH ONLY. I didn't get a picture of the Chicken Tenders, but the HONEY MUSTARD is absolutely amazing. My wife is a huge fan of the honey mustard and pizza and has been going there since she was a kid. She got me hooked on the honey mustard too, so that is a must try. Town Spa is known as one of the GOATs of South Shore Bar Pizza, but it is average in my book. Maybe I just always get a thicker than normal pizza that is slightly under cooked, but it seems to be a regular issue for me. Would have liked my pickles chopped up too. They are OK. Probably more nostalgic for my wife which will have us go back at some point.
google avatar

Sur F.

Yelp
Pizza is fantastic.Greek salad delicious. Staff is top notch- good people. But the chicken fingers??? Why would you sell this junk. I'll pay more for fresh breaded chicken- this frozen chicken is not edible.
google avatar

Sydney S.

Yelp
This pizza place is well known in the south shore area for a reason. They have great bar style pizza always delicious and crispy. Don't forget to try their homemade honey mustard, a staple at this restaurant!

Christine D.

Yelp
Bar pizza is better than any pizza. I paid for my food once, in high school, with a roll of quarters because I was unrefined. Nothing much has changed on my end or theirs. I think that waitress who I gave the quarters to still holds a grudge. They charge for honey mustard now so don't you dare ask for extra. I like their Greek salad too. Ample parking. Try us, Lynwood. Go Bulldogs! 5 stars.
google avatar

Jack J.

Yelp
Overall, Town Spa has built a solid business over the years which is basically customer friendly with tasty bar pizza, salads and side items. The frozen pizza is also pretty good. For the volume they do, the service is remarkably efficient and accurate with few errors. I try to avoid TS during extremely busy times when the wait is measured in hours and the parking lot gets crazy and dangerous.
google avatar

Jayjay S.

Yelp
Town Spa Pizza is well know for their pickle pizza and their crispy chicken tenders. I have to say both were amazing and definitely worth the Stoughton commute. Parking was a breeze more than one lot of parking so you will never have an issue even when it's packed. The service was quick and hassle free.
google avatar

Carlos G.

Yelp
Went there Sunday night. The pizza was amazing. The staff was amazing. The food came out fast enjoy the big bar area and flat screens will be back pretty soon

Nathan S.

Yelp
The pizza at the restaurant was very good but the other options were pretty in the middle besides the chicken wings

Chris H.

Yelp
Best food ever pickle pizza with burnt crust best pizza ever super super super super super super super super super super super super super super super super gut

Ed D.

Yelp
Always great at Town Spa! I always get the Greek salad (and happily eat the pepperoncini that the others don't want) then to an extra crispy onion and black olive pizza. I always say to myself "I'm going to take some home" and after the first slice I know it will be gone in 10 minutes. Looking forward to next time!
google avatar

Jeff G.

Yelp
Don't know why people like it. Tastes like frozen pizza but not as good. Tried it a few times since it is so popular, have changed my mind
google avatar

Jason B.

Yelp
This is probably going to be sacrilegious to some, but I was disapointed. The pizza wasn't bad by any means, but it wasn't worth the hype. Defiently wasn't worth the trip.

Janet K.

Yelp
I am born and raised in Massachusetts but have been living in Florida for 8 years and every time we come back to MA we have to go to the Town Spa by far best pizza hands down never disappoints!!!!!
