Townes is easy to get to and used to serve beer and simple American fare (hamburgers, pasta, deep, fried chicken, etc.) As of March 2024, The entire vibe of this restaurant is off--as in uncoordinated and lacking its own identity.
From what we observed, the bar is still active with its locals who used to go there for beer and sports TV. The bench-style seating down the center of the restaurant is OK for casual dining, but doesn't really work for the quality of food their chef prepares. More on this later.
One of two back sections is curtained off and reserved for private parties. The night we were there, we saw a lot of servers clustered in the back of the kitchen, putting their heads together, collectively planning how to take care of whatever group was back there.
The upstairs is another separate section, not likely that one would be served up there unless the place is packed. Overall, the space lacks a cohesive theme/vibe. It's disjointed, with four different income source spaces for the restaurant: the back of the room, the bar, the down-the-middle-row and table seating, and the upstairs.
Service was OK, but there were a few times where there was confusion about how to handle corkage and topping off of our bubbles. The staff definitely aimed at being professional, but when one of our dishes was deemed too spicy, the server's attitude "oh well, too bad." This is a no way in exaggeration, but reveals the artifice of professionalism cloaked over the inability to manage a small issue.
Note: if you bring your own bottle, the corkage fee here is one of the highest in Sonoma County: $25.
Now for the food: their Chef prepared a fabulous scallops appetizer-- creamed cauliflower with radicchio and hazelnuts--which we both LOVED, although we did wish there were more than three scallops each dish.
The salmon was fresh farmed, yet tasty. Dessert was a chocolate mousse kind of dish (don't remember name) that was delicious, yet quite small.
On at least two occasions, the GM came by to see how we were doing, but did not seem to actually be interested in our feedback; his attention was elsewhere and was not genuinely friendly.
Despite not ordering any drinks, our bill-- including tip--was nearly $160.
Although they have a fantastic chef, this place does not exude the level of sophistication that would be aligned with a truly high-quality restaurant.
