New Vegan Restaurant Jupiter Supper Club Is Opening in Downtown Austin | Eater Austin

"Previously operating as the Townsend, the venue opened in 2015 by the Penumbral Strategic Ventures group with Austin bar expert Justin Elliott as director of hospitality; it focused on well-made cocktails, bites, and live music programming and won an Eater Award in 2015 for best new bar. The Townsend was working on opening the building's second floor as an event space but never did; in 2016 it became involved with New York-based cocktail bar Employees Only in planned expansion moves that ultimately didn't materialize, Elliott left the company in 2017, and after a temporary pandemic closure in March 2020 the shutdown was made permanent in June 2020." - Nadia Chaudhury

Moving in was rough with a lot of fixes and maintenance work, but the maintenance team is super quick and responsive. The front desk team is incredibly friendly and always makes an effort to remember your name, which is such a welcoming experience every time you come home. The building itself is not a high-end luxury property, but for the location and price point, it’s a good value. Everything is maintained and functional at a minimum, and the amenities cover the essentials, even though I never use them. I’ll miss our corner unit facing Hudson Yards with the unbeatable views.

Google
I lived at The Townsend for the past 3–4 years and truly loved the building. The doormen, superintendent, and staff have been consistently kind, helpful, and welcoming — it often felt like being part of a warm community where they genuinely look out for you. Unfortunately, my experience with management has been deeply frustrating. The person I was dealing with has consistently shown a lack of empathy or flexibility and never offers solutions- everything was a ‘’no’. In fact, it often felt like she went out of her way to make things more difficult, which created unnecessary stress and disappointment. While the building itself and the on-site team are exceptional, the management experience has significantly affected my overall experience. Unless there’s a change in leadership, I wouldn’t feel comfortable recommending The Townsend for any future tenants.

Google
Townsend Although it is a bit old, the room is bright and spacious, and there is a sky garden on the rooftop where you can have a party. This property is full of human touch! The doorman Lucas is a very responsible and friendly gentleman! It is noisy at night when staying here

Tara

Google
I loved living here so much I wish they give me a discount for my rent. Will miss the friendliest doormen I have ever met! Pretty decent services ( one time our laundry was broken and they gave us a completely new replacement for free!) beautiful view and decent commute

Ashish C.

Google
We had an amazing experience living in this building for the past three years. The management team, especially super Rick, has been very helpful and responsive, making our stay seamless. We never had any issues during our time here, and the building has amazing rooftop views. The location is also extremely convenient, with easy access to everything Manhattan has to offer.

Tara C.

Google
Front desk Edward is absolutely incredible!! I wish everyone was as amazing as him! He knew where to get everything I needed from the best coffee to the best burger!!! I really appreciated his kindness at the end of a rough day! He definitely needs a raise cause his great demeanor is super contagious! 💚

Andes L.

Google
Great doormen and maintenance. Shoutout Rick and Ed! Edit: YOU WILL NOT GET SECURITY DEPOSIT BACK. Have to leave 1 star after not being able to get our security deposit back. unfortunate, because we really liked our building staff but management has been awful

Paul K.

Google
I had an extremely unpleasant experience with the leasing office. Despite being only 8 minutes late, the front desk attendant handed me a phone after dialing the agent. The agent, Sergei, proceeded to yell at me for being late and refused to show us apartments, despite confirmation that he was still in the building.
google avatar

Marianela M.

Yelp
We moved in recently but so far so good. Sergey was amazing and very responsive during out application and leasing process. The location is excellent and close to several subway lines.

Karma77 R.

Yelp
The area has more homeless and crime than most of the city I would not recommend living here and the apartment building has major issues.. bugs, washer and dryers in apartment not working properly and the management company absolutely horrible.

Shreni S.

Yelp
THIS BUILDING IS UNDER STAFFED AND OVER PROMISES ASPECTS THAT THEY CANNOT DELIVER. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I have never had a worse renting situation. I came into an apartment that was "ready" but actually completely broken. Appliances did not work and when I asked for them to be replaced, the super consistently used the replacements as leverage- as if he was doing me a favor by getting me a new washer and dryer when the previous ones did not work, despite the promise of a functioning W/D. My curtains were damaged upon moving in and it took them 2 months to replace them. Since they replaced them I have had to have them put up again 4 times. One time, the curtain that fell literally fell on my shoulder and I was in agonizing pain for a week. I held off sending in the review but after a personal injury and several requests to reinforce the curtains I am left with no choice. The only reason that I would put 2 stars instead of 1 is because the doormen are awesome!

Yanghyun C.

Yelp
Good building!! Amazing view Nice doorman Best condition building. I have been living here for three months. I am most satisfied with my 5 year life in Manhattan.

Reese L.

Yelp
Great building and staff..especially the Super Ric. The building is always clean and quiet despite the hectic noisy life that is NYC. It is a non smoking building which is also a plus. The rooftop has a beautiful view of the city & Jersey.
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
Great building Close to many subway stations Nice doormen and building staff Great communication with management Beautiful rooftop terrace Needed repairs were always addressed and fixed in a timely manner Nice amenities, no complaints

Yelp
From the moment I walked into Townsend the energy just felt right. Diana Makdulina ,I worked with, was totally on the same page as me. She showed me one unite and I fall in love with my new apartment, facing various directions (River and City views). The unit is breathtaking and I knew I found my new home. I've been working with Townsend for about a month and it has been positively life changing. Jennifer Ort and Diana Makdulina have been amazing to work with. Their service and dedication to their residents is unparalleled. The architecture and location of Townsend make for a truly one of a kind living experience. Its like living inside a work of art. I'm proud to be a part of this building.

Vida A.

Yelp
I have been living in the TOWNSEND community for two years and just signed up for a third. Initially, I was sold on the quality of the apartment, the in-unit washer and dryer, and that 360-degree rooftop view. However, what has been most important for me is the community of people that run TOWNSEND. Over the years, the security guards and building supervisory staff have become friends and the management office has always been incredibly attentive. I have only lived in this building since moving back to NYC and have loved it everyday!
google avatar

Patrick Y.

Yelp
The only good thing about this building is that they allow you to build a full wall, which is getting rare in NYC. The super and leasing agent are extremely rude. The doormen used to be really nice and friendly. They would greet you by name and hand you your packages as you walk in. But management fired them all and replaced them with people who can't even speak English and ignore you when you need something. The apartments are smaller than average (500 sqft for 1 br vs 600 sqft in other buildings). The floor-to-ceiling windows are nice, but the blinds are transparent and useless. If you are at home from 12pm-3pm you will literally get sunburned even with the blinds down.
google avatar

Kavita J.

Yelp
We've had 3 wonderful years at The Townsend! The doormen are all so nice and we've had a great experience with building management. Any repairs or issues are always promptly addressed. The amenities are fantastic (dishwasher, washer/dryer in the apartment, roof deck, gym, and elevators) and the apartments are bright and nicely sized. Finally, the location is very convenient, close to both Penn Station and Port Authority, easy access to Brooklyn Fare grocery store (and multiple liquor stores!), and surrounded by some great restaurants!

Alex Z.

Yelp
They claim to have a bike storage, and they do. However no one is watching it and my first bike got stolen and the second one vandalized in efforts to get stolen (couldn't cut the lock). The management does not give a s&&t. So don't be fooled, you will need to keep your bike in your apartment. There are many homeless junkies on the block, and the area is not safe, especially when walking at night. Please stay away.

Yelp
We have been here for over 3 years now and in terms of the building and the people that manage everything, this place is great! The super, Ricardo, is prompt and always takes care of requests immediately. Everyone at the front desk is wonderful and friendly...especially Lucas, Eddie and Terrell. Arine from the leasing office is super prompt with all questions and requests and she is also very professional and friendly. I've actually never worked with a leasing office that was this friendly and helpful. The building is located near Hudson Yards; where Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen border. Lots of great restaurants nearby as well as grocery options like Brooklyn Fare, Target and Trader Joe's.

Nitish S.

Yelp
Serge and Rick were all super nice and made our move into the building as seamless as possible. They never once made a headache for us and I have nothing but great things to say about the entire team here at the Townsend. They're as good as it gets
google avatar

Han Y.

Yelp
I lived at this place for over 3 years and just recently moved out. The reason we lived here is because they allowed us to build a full wall while many other places did not. In terms of the price, I think this place is slightly more expensive than other places nearby with the same amenities. The quality of the apartment is also only ok. The walls started peeling and there were many other issues that we needed to call maintenance for. The only good thing was the super did respond to maintenance requests rather quickly and that was nice, but i felt like there were many more issues than my last apartment. One reason this place doesn't get one star is because the doormen here are pretty good. The ones that are here during the week actually remember who you are and talk to you and are very helpful. The worst part about this place is the leasing and management offices. They are super rude and sometimes while you are emailing them back and forth, they just stop responding when they feel like they don't want to answer your question. You have to repeatedly email them the same question for them to respond. Also, it's super hard to find their contact information. Another issue is that when I was transferring my lease over to another tenant, the leasing office emailed us on a Saturday asking if we could sign the lease Sunday or Monday. Aside from the fact that they wouldn't answer my question of whether we could sign at different times or not because they said to schedule a time when we'd all be free, I found out on Monday that the management office was closed on Sunday so they couldn't even have prepared the lease for us. When I went in on Monday (AGAIN), the lady in there straight up lied to my face and said she never sent that email asking if we wanted to sign Sunday. I literally almost pulled up the email to show her, but then who knows what they would have done, so I didn't.

Yelp
Updated for my previous review. The management office is very responsible. They send someone immediately to fix the heat system for my mom's apartment. Thank you.

Scott B.

Yelp
I've lived here for MANY years. The doormen are great (and when they aren't they are not around for very long). The super is responsive to repair requests. Management answers questions promptly and keeps me informed of any issues that might effect my day to day. Also for the area and the price the apartments are quite large. Oh, and there are washer/dryers in unit. Backside of the building is very quiet too. I read a review that complained about the light blasting into the apartment. You're complaining about getting too much light in your apartment in NYC? Wow. First world problems. And to the bike getting stolen review...I have had a bike locked up in the bike storage for five years and have never had any problems. It's NYC; are you using a motorcycle chain to lock up your bike? Do you have a unique key to remove/raise and lower your seat? If you don't have these things you shouldn't be keeping your bike locked outside in NYC.

Yelp
My laziness to look for a 2 BR apartment ended up in staying at Townsend for another year. I moved from a 1 BR in Townsend to a 2 BR in Townsend. I cannot even tell you how painful was the moving procedure regardless that I was already a resident. Noone takes any responsibility in that building, management is very very poor still after a year. Actually the only building management practice they have is the e-mails they send about what you are not allowed to do in the building. Like you can't drink on the roof etc. Usually, salesmen are nice to you until they sell you stuff. At Townsend, they are not even nice when selling. On top everything, I got a dirty apartment. Not cleaned, not painted, with so many broken stuff (and broken glass in the kitchen). Same thing happened last year too when I gave them credit for being a new building but clearly they did not gain any experience over a year.

Matthew L.

Yelp
The doormen at the Townsend are extremely kind and helpful. The leasing office is accommodative to requests and quite responsive. The super also is quick to make repairs and address any issues in the units. The views from the roof are great!

Penny B.

Yelp
Great building - leasing agent (Sergey) was very helpful and quick to respond. I moved here from out of State and he made it a snap. 24-hour concierge staff are amazing - super friendly and helpful. Very clean building, apartments and hallways newly updated. Higher end appliances. Views are AMAZING from the apartments and the rooftop deck, gym is clean and there seems to be enough equipment to handle resident needs. Building Management is super-responsive and friendly. Location is fun - very lively and sometimes loud but windows keep out the sound when closed. 37th Street is not a quiet street (meaning lots of people, cars, excitement) but that's part of what makes it fun! Lots of great restaurants around the corner. Close to 3 supermarkets too. Really fun living so close to Penn Station, Macy's, the High Line and Hudson Yards. Very close to several subway and bus lines.

Krista B.

Yelp
I live in the TOWNSEND for over a year and have listed some considerations below. Cons 1. Half the stuff is broken in the gym 2. We lived on a lower floor and management told us the building across the street was a abandoned. NOT TRUE it is a place where food and bicycle carts are stored and there was people in there morning and night and it was very uncomfortable knowing people could see me laying in my bed. It really bothered me management would lie about the building being occupied especially because I would of paid to live on a higher floor had I known. To add insult to injury while the floor to ceiling windows are beautiful the curtains they provide are completely see through. 3. There are several halfway houses and homeless shelters near by. I have never in my life seen more drug deals/usage then I did when I lived on 37th street. While this is not the fault of the building, it is something to consider when moving to this area. 4. Elevators! There aren't enough for all the apartments and there are frequently lines to use during rush hour times. It doesn't help that they break down regularly as well. Also, this may have just been a pet peeve of mine but the residential floors don't have tickers to show where the elevators are so you never knew how long you'd have to wait to get one. Pros 1. The super here is amazing. Always prompt and helpful with apartment repairs. 2. Apartments are large, modern, and all have washer/dryers and dishwashers. 3. Dog friendly 4. #1 pro is they allow full floor to ceiling temporary wallsy
google avatar

Anne H.

Yelp
Don't live here. The walls are paper thin, management is horribly unresponsive, elevators constantly don't work, and the supers will use/use up your things without a word. It was a nice touch when my roommate and I were bickering about who used the last paper towel because we still had at least a half roll left, only to realize that the super must have used it up (seriously though? Half a roll??). You could literally hear neighbors' conversations through the bathroom ducts, it was pretty creepy. The only plus were the friendly doormen.
google avatar

Rick W.

Yelp
Thinking of signing a lease here this week - theyve thrown down some nice discount options. Whats up with the sound system docks? They have the old ipod adapter - has anyone figured a way to apply a converter or something?

Aaron F.

Yelp
Place is in the prime location - you're at the top part of Chelsea, lower part of hell's kitchen, and close enough to midtown but far enough from tourists. Basically, perfect place for being near everything. In terms of the building - GORGEOUS. the apartments are renovated with beautiful appliances and bathrooms and the super lives on site and is responsive to fixing things. We even have speakers built into all the walls which is a great plus. Definitely recommend this place.

Yelp
Great apartment with great staff! Doorman and Maint staff are second to none. Arine and Cheryl have also been very responsive and attentive throughout to process of renewing our lease. Location is close to any line and Hudson yards is up and coming. Highly recommend!

Clark K.

Yelp
With my first month at the Townsend behind me, all I can say is WOW. The leasing office and management team has been very courteous, communicative, and helpful throughout my move. Sergey, Arine, and Stephanie from management are all very professional and have made my move in stress-free. Rick, the Super, really goes out of his way for all residents and took the time late at night to do a walk-through of the apartment with me before I moved in. I am slowly getting to know each of the doormen, but so far, only good things to say. Thank you!!!!!
google avatar

Scarlett M.

Yelp
pros: I have luckily experiences GOOD communication with management and leasing office via EMAIL. many reviews suggest the opposite. I feel that the super (jerry) does a pretty good job. KILLER rooftop view cons: no buidlg provided free wifi on roof AWFUL shades. I HATE sunlight, so mornings are a b--- for me waking up. because 37th st feeds right into lincoln entrance, there is darn near ALWAYS a traffic jam on the street. there is ALWAYS a fee for lockouts (the metropolis on 44th st does not enforce this part of the lease agreement). whoever disigned bedroom closet was under the influence... how the hell do u properly hang a dress in there? while a nice master bathroom, (in a 2 bedroom apt)... its TOO big... id rather have had the closet space ------ side note: please note that the men in lobby are lobby attendants, NOT doormen. if you need help, say so.

Ting L.

Yelp
The manager is so nice. Nice apartment. Nice building. The room is good too. The rental is cheap and worthy

Neha B.

Yelp
I recently moved into the Townsend (on 37th btwn 8th and 9th Ave) and thus far I have had nothing but problems. The hot water has been either unavailable or brown for the last 2 weeks and every time we write a work-order for it, maintenance comes up, confirms that it is in fact brown and then goes away. Numerous doors and walls have cracks in them and the overall workmanship of the apartments is shotty at best. There are gaps between the trim on the wall and the floors. There are cracks in the molding and sloppy paint marks throughout the living room, kitchen and bathroom. Worst of all we just found out that an apartment on our floor has mice. While I understand that new construction in NYC often brings about rodents, I thought this was something management would have taken care of prior to having tenants move in. I certainly did not expect this to be a problem that we needed to deal with in a "luxury" building. All new constructions have their growing pains and we understand that. However, the most frustrating part of the experience thus far has been the lack of response from management. Tenants have no direct access to building management or the super except through the leasing office which seems more interested in leasing out remaining apartments than addressing the concerns of those that have already moved in.

Yelp
I've been living at the Townsend for a little over a year now (we signed 2 year lease w/ a rider to leave after 18months) and while there are some pros to this place...the cons severely outweigh them. Pros: 1. Washer and dryer in unit. Super super convenient! I can do laundry whenever I want and I know no one else's dirty clothes have been in there (besides my roommates obv) 2. Ipod dock with speakers throughout your apartment (even in the bathrooms!) 3. Great views from the roof 4. Awesome awesome awesome doormen - especially Julio! 5. Gym has a closing time...but no one ever checks so basically 24/7 gym Cons: 1. Washer and dryer takes FOR-FREAKIN-EVER. I'm talking about min 3 hours to a do a load, unless you do the quick wash...but that just makes me feel like my washer is half-assing the job. Our washer has also gotten stuck twice...meaning it was on the same cycle for like 8 hours. When I sent in a maintenance request....I was told to "put less clothes in because these are not commercial washers". 2. The super is an ass. My heater wouldn't turn on the day of Snowtober so I put in a maintenance request. He shows up at my door and first thing he says is "what did you do to break it?". I'm pretty easy going so I let it go. Then turns out I didn't do anything and the a/c unit is broken. So he goes and gets another one. While moving my bed to make space to put the new unit in, he drops it, breaks my blinds, knocks ALL of my stuff on my windowsill off and breaks a bunch of my souvenirs from my travels. Instead of apologizing, he had the nerve to say "you have too much stuff" then yells at me for having water near the a/c unit...maybe if you didn't knock my stuff down and break my teapot there wouldn't be any spilled water. Whatever. When he leaves he says "see I fixed everything" and I respond by pointing out all the things he broke that he obviously cannot fix and he LAUGHS...stating my items are insignificant! My parents brought me up to have manners, to give people the benefit of the doubt and to generally try to be a good person....but I was so FREAKING upset...in my most angry and commanding voice (I sound like I am 6 years old), I tell him to apologize to me and in a patronizing tone he says "I apologize". UGH. 3. Everything breaks, there are paint stains everywhere, the materials used are all pretty crappy and cheap. Maybe they should have spent less money on the gigantic useless waterfall (I guess it looks baller/pretty) and more on the other stuff. 4. Management treats you like you're a child. Emails go out at least once a month reminding you to not drink on the roof, to clean up after yourself, to be quiet, to not eat on the roof, to not smoke on the roof, to not throw stuff off the roof.

Yelp
One of the best rooftop decks in New York! The views are incredible! Very quiet. Elevators are fast, nice finishes & nice amenities. Really a wonderful place.

Eric F.

Yelp
Lived in the building between july 2012-June 2013, Do not give them your money. Some things to keep in mind. The building is nice, but walls are paper thin, you can hear everything in your neighbors place. Apartment was delivered in extremely poor condition, we had to hire cleaning crew to clean up. Management is poorly responsive. When you call the number they answer you by telling you that you have reached the number you have just called. Lalezerian is totally incompetent. Ariene, the manager lives in Lake Success NY, which is nowhere near the building. You will NEVER get ahold of her to address any issues you may have with the building or maitenence. Chrystal, also in maitenence is completely useless. The company is very interested in nickel and diming you in your security deposit but not interested in their reputation and your satisfaction. The rent is way overpriced for what you get. It looks good on the surface, but buyer beware.

Yein K.

Yelp
Great location. NICEST doorman and supervisor- I've really enjoyed my 2 years at Townsend.

Natalia C.

Yelp
I have lived here for a few months now and I am very happy with my unit and the building. The management office has been very helpful, especially Arine. The common areas are well-kept and the rooftop is UNBELIEVABLE. The units have floor to ceiling windows and I am very happy with the natural light that comes into my room. I would definitely recommend living here.

Michael M.

Yelp
I'm currently finishing my 2 year lease at Townsend 37. I can genuinely say that my time here has been exceptionally pleasant! The doormen/management staff are extremely professional. Dry clean/mail service are excellent as they always make sure to notify me immediately when something is ready to be picked up. Additionally, any maintenance requests are addressed promptly and I have never had to wait overnight for a request to be completed. The rooftop is breathtaking so be sure to ask the leasing office for a tour up there if you're looking for a new apartment building to move into. Overall great experience 5/5.

Mike T.

Yelp
I've been living here for 2 months I had a problem with the heating system no working well. I called the management and spoke to a lady named Arine she made sure I was comfortable in my apartment she got some on to fix it. She's was very professional on the phone. Thank you!!!!

Calvin L.

Yelp
Great building and maintenance staff but the management company, Lalazarian, is hopelessly incompetent. Don't ever expect to get a hold of anyone if you are calling them about any issues at all.

Ouqing W.

Yelp
My roommate and I just moved in last week. We would definitely recommend this place. Especially appreciate leasing office Melissa's help. She is very nice, helpful, and patient. She helped us successfully completed our application, moving in documents review. Also helped my roommate staying one more night at her previous apartment which is also in the same company as Townsend is, so that my roommate did not need to move out in a hurry. Elevators are fast, doormen are all very helpful and nice. My apartment has a very good view overlook midtown Manhattan.

Amanda B.

Yelp
Just finished signing a lease for a unit in this building. Melissa in the leasing office is amazing. She's super nice and accommodating, and handled my & my roommates' very complicated situation (I needed to pay several months' worth of rent up front, and so did my roommates, who are both international students) with speed and humor. She seems to genuinely love her job and was knowledgeable about everything I asked her about. The leasing process was very fast. I'm definitely impressed!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I also moved into Townsend several weeks ago. What the prior post failed to mention is want a great rate we are paying for a new building with a washer/ dryer and iPod dock in each unit - it's a great value. Unexpected things happen in new construction - I've been in the business for 20 years - it's how you handle the issues that make the difference. I can say we receive regular updates from the building manager and i feel they are responsive to service requests. As far as the brown water - they fixed it - but they would not have known until the building was occupied. As far mice - I've not seen one - but i did see the exterminator and service personnel working to resolve/ prevent the situation from getting out of control. Shotty workmanship - sure, theres a little spackle here and there - but we arent renting at the Trump Tower. If we were, we would be paying a lot more - and the developer could afford to pay a higher rate for quality white glove treatment. We aren't spending that kind of money - so the developer can't either. I cleaned it myself. Overall, I am quit happy here and think it's a great place.

Yelp
I have lived in the Townsend for the past three years and have had nothing but a positive experience. The doormen are great and so is the maintenance staff.I recommend the Townsend and whenever I see potential renters in the elevators I tell them how much I love the building!!

Michelle N.

Yelp
Update to reflect some recent, positive developments. The tvs are now working in the fitness room, the rooftop is officially "open" (although not exactly as inviting as the artist's rendering on the website) and management has developed a building website where you can post service requests (have had two in the last month both of which were responded to same day). They have also implemented automatic email notification for package and dry cleaning delivery. The waterfall in the lobby is still under construction, but all in all, I am pleased with Townsend...mostly because I seemingly no longer have to deal with the leasing office.

Jordan S.

Yelp
I have been living in the Townsend building for almost two years and my experience has been wonderful. I enjoy coming home to a clean, safe building and great apartment. The staff is always friendly and I know I can rely on them to get what I need done. I have been living in the city for almost 6 years and it is such a great feeling knowing that I finally found a building that suits all my needs. I have suggested the building and management company to friends and family and everyone comes back with such positive feedback.

Corey G.

Yelp
Melissa in the leasing office was incredible! She handled our very complicated like a true professional and got everything taken care of for us. She was super nice and am glad she was the person that helped me move forward with my first apartment.

Natalie T.

Yelp
Micheal I agree 100% We are not living in Trump Tower and I can live with a dent in my fridge and a little spakle as well. I got an UNBELIEVABLE deal on my 2 bedroom. I have a nicer apartment then any of my friends and pay FAR less. I love the other tenants in the building and the doormen are awesome. Granted there wasn't a direct management contact at first (there currently is one) but when I went to the leasing office they helped me with whatever I needed, the girls in there are great and made the leasing process smooth for me and my parents (who were signing out of state). They really tried to accommodate us when we needed to move in ASAP and were out of the country during the approval process. I honestly really love living here and am not one to complain about minor issues when I got such a great deal on a brand new construction building with a washer and dryer, Ipod dock system and great neighboors! :)
