Disneyland has Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, and California Adventure has Toy Story Midway Mania! (exclamation point not mine). Both are shooting games based on the Toy Story movies, their openings only a few years apart, in 2005 and 2008, respectively. I like Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, but Toy Story Midway Mania! is about a hundred times better.
It's one of the best rides in California Adventure, and definitely the best without height restrictions. The line gets long, so it's a great place to use your Lightning Lane passes if you have them. We took our tiny boys and the four of us fit in one car. Did the two-year-old wear his 3D glasses? Not for more than a second. But all of us had a blast.
Toy Story Midway Mania! is a "4D" shooting game, where you go through several mini-games firing projectiles at a colorful variety of moving targets. The graphics are adorable and extremely well done, and I appreciate that the shooting involves pulling a ball on a string to throw eggs and baseballs. About as nonviolent as a shooting game can be.
I'm not particularly good at this game, but it's really fun even when you're missing most of your shots. I had our four-year-old in my lap, and he claimed that we'd beaten his dad and brother, even though my husband had the higher score. We didn't correct him with much enthusiasm, so he may still believe in his team's victory.
In any case, we'll have a rematch before too long. With small kids and Lightning Lane passes, Toy Story Midway Mania! is a mandatory ride. We'll be back next time we visit California Adventure.
