Portland Tabletop Game-Themed Brewery TPK Brewing Opens October 28 | Eater Portland

"Opening Saturday, October 28th on Southeast Hawthorne, this new brewery celebrates the world of tabletop gaming: TPK (short for “total party kill”) is founded by brewer Jess Hardie, gamemaster and podcaster Dana Ebert, and CEO Elliot Kaplan in the former Tabor Bread bakery. While the brewery’s first batch finishes, it will debut collaborative beers brewed with Threshold Brewing, Montavilla Brew Works, Leikam Brewing, and Oregon City Brewing Company; the taproom will offer beers inspired by tabletop games, a library of gaming books, plenty of places to play, and an onsite Dungeons & Dragons variant called The Leyfarer’s Chronicle complete with the brewery’s manual and gaming materials. Food at opening will come from En Vida PDX rather than the originally planned Hapa Barkada." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

The Most Anticipated Portland Restaurant Openings, Fall 2023 | Eater Portland

"Transformed from the former Tabor Bread, I’m excited for an inventive brewpub where staff will run tabletop roleplaying games with self‑published storylines and brewing recipes, paired with a Hawaiian‑meets‑Filipino menu from Hapa Barkada (a collaboration between Hapa Howie’s and Barkada PDX); a recent pop‑up from chefs Kiaha Kurek and Melvin Trinidad previewed dishes such as arroz caldo arancini, halo halo cereal milk rice pudding, and embutido shu mai." - Janey Wong

Awesome. Wide variety of very good beer. Interesting and tasty menu. Super fabulous vibe. Very D&D gamers, Society for Creative Anachronism and adjacent peoples. Wonderfully Queer Friendly. Gaming upstairs and lots of special events. Enjoyment and Merriment will be had!

We came here for dinner and to play cards on a Saturday night. Great beer. Impeccable vibes. We really enjoyed hanging out. Our food was good. I enjoyed the plantains. My husband was disappointed in the vegetarian options. Their online menu shows a Mac and cheese but it wasn’t available, so he could only get a rice and beans dish. Really enjoyed the beer cocktails. We look forward to coming back for a gaming event!

The beautiful woodwork and home-like atmosphere are the first things I noticed when I walked into this rad tavern. During lunch this particular day, some Celtic Music was playing. Awesome! People were talking and enjoying themselves, we added some delicious food (Mojo Sandwich), and the vibe was complete! I will definitely bring my friends here.

What a wonderful tavern! Lovely theme, drinks and food. The mojo chicken and Cubano were perfect. They have beers, cocktails, & NA drinks. Board games and plenty of space to bring your own group.

This is a great space for getting together with friends. The Cubano sandwich with potato salad was excellent. There is 6 tables for diners. This establishment features several areas for its special role playing events. I regret not trying some of their speciality beers.

Google
Role playing games are not my thing UNTIL I saw the true magic and warm atmosphere of this brewery. Wonderful D&D masters, live celtic music and variety of games and delights for all. Food & drinks are just as creative and well-curated. They even have an NA spanish coffee ☕

Google
The food is tasty and the drinks are fun. Great vibe and location. Usually very crowded on the weekends so get there early if you want a table. Be sure to check out the upstairs for seating as well. They are very open to you bringing games in and can seat larger groups, but like stated before, seating can be a struggle to obtain.

Fantastic all-around! The food is excellent Caribbean fare with great variety. The house-brewed beers are great. The cocktail menu is nuanced and inventive. The environment and staff are welcoming and inclusive. Bring your friends and a game you want to play. You will not be disappointed

Yelp
TPK Brewing is a super fun brewery that Steve and I have enjoyed twice now. There is a lot to love for me with this brewery. The fantasy and the Dungeons & Dragons themes are really fun and totally calls to me. So therefore with our first experience here I stocked up on a lot of swag- shirts! My first beer with this brewery was a Red Ale or Amber Ale, The Lady of Embers. This was a very enjoyable first time beer with this brewery. Flavor features in this beer are Caramel, a roastiness, maltiness, biscuity and a dry finish. It proved to be a fun beer to try out for the first time and we were eager to come back and try more of their beers. A bit of time passed and we were able to do that. This time we got three different beers of different types to give us a well rounded experience with their beers. Cascade Falls was the first beer on the second experience that we delved into. This beer is a Cream Ale and I haven't had one in a while so I was quite eager to get a hold of another one again. This particular Cream Ale had peaches and vanilla as the primary flavors and they were pretty good. It was sweet but not heavy handed which made this beer pleasant. This beer was a collaboration beer with another brewery, Thunder Island Brewing Company. After that I moved into dark beer territory and got a stout by the name of The Ashbringer. This one I rated very highly on Untappd because I enjoyed the flavor profile so very much! This stout has flavor highlights of roastiness, a spiced presence, coffee, chocolate and some clove. It was a really well made stout...well balanced and one I really got into. I believe actually this was my favorite beer out of the several I have tried. The last beer was a Marzen beer, a type that isn't too terribly common but always a good one when I can get a hold of it. The name of this beer was the Hasta La Raiz. This is a nice light bodied beer that has maltiness, roastiness, some fruitiness and a bit of a floral presence. It was a fun one to try out for sure. TPK Brewing also serves food and it's quite good! We grazed off of several different appetizers here that we really enjoyed. The first one was the Yuca Frita which was Yucca cut into big, thick French Fries sort cuts and we dipped it into a green sauce as well as a pico de gallo type of dip which enhanced the experience. In addition to that we got a beef empanada that Steve and I split along with the same sauces...also excellent and then to round out our snacking here we got the Arepitas De Queso which is a white masa cake mixed with cheese and then deep fried. It also had the same sauces as the previous two appetizers but we were fine with that... we were all about it and deep into it. Steve and loved this place and would be thrilled to come back to enjoy more of their food and beers !

Yelp
This place is more unique than even I could imagine... so definitely experience it firsthand. There is a vending machine with unique items near the entrance. I didn't try any of the food but it looked delicious. Had one of the ipas on tap and it was spot on. The server was kind of enough to let me try some samples before I decided. It's a chill spot with downstairs and upstairs options for seating. The ads around the place seemed to indicate that they have live entertainment from time to time. Not a fancy place, but the beer lands well. Plus, the place itself is a conversation starter... am I right?

Yelp
We stopped into TPK after an event downtown. We came across it through Yelp looking for an open place to grab a cold draft. Felt really lucky to find this place. The bar tender was very cool and friendly. Explained the background of the place and gave tastes to my wife of several taps before she picked one. The beer was cold and fresh and well carbonated. I.E. NOT disappointingly flat. The atmosphere is good. Good music's. Clean. Small but open to the street. It's a mixed neighborhood. Some sketchy characters about, it is a city after all. But the place itself is good and fun. We had a couple of beers and moved on. But I would definitely go back the next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Incredible atmosphere, outstanding drinks and food, and great everything else you could want. Recommend big time.

Yelp
If you're looking for a place to relax after a hard day of adventuring and killing Goblins, this is the spot. Gather around to share tales of glory and raise a glass to fallen comrades. Absolute gem of a spot hidden away here in Portland. Whether you're in to DnD, tabletop games, or deep in some sort of LARP, this is a great spot. (They even do hosted DnD games on the 2nd floor). The food was deeeelicious and right on point. Several tasty looking beers on tap (and a noice selection of alcohol-free beers, too!) Come on the right day you might even hear a tune or two. It does get a bit crowded so keep that in mind. Reasonably accessible for wheelchairs on the main level, though when crowded it can be tricksy. Bathroom checks out. (Curious about the accessible bathroom on the 2nd floor though, given that the floor itself doesn't seem accessible.)

Yelp
I was checking out the Hawthorne neighborhood and decided to swing by TPK for a drink. Overall, I'd say the brewery is fitting to the neighborhood. Not a lot of stuff on tap (perhaps 9), and only a couple beers were IPAs. The establishment itself seems rather small, but there are rooms in the back -- it has a slight D&D theme, and it apparently hosts board game nights for locals. The bartender was very nice and friendly, extremely knowledgable. Given all the amazing breweries in the area, I can't say this was my absolute favorite -- but it's worth a visit if in the neighborhood.

Yelp
I gave it a 3 star not because it was bad. But because it just wasn't our vibe. Kind of small with tables close together. I was in the mood for a glass of wine but they had run out. Lots of folks playing table games having a good time. My Cubano sandwich was pretty good. I probably won't go back, but I can see where this would be a nice place for the right person.

Yelp
I know that Portland is known for its IPAs and brewpubs, so after a morning of shopping, we searched for location and found TPK Brewing Co. I chose the Ryes of the Chuggernaut (black rye IPA) with the Arepitas de Queso appetizer. It was a darn good combination .

Yelp
If you're a fan of tabletop RPG (role-playing games), this is the place for you. They have a variety of those types of games available to play and they regularly have scheduled games you have to register for ahead of time; follow them on Instagram for details & updates. The interior decor has a coffee shop in the LOTR universe vibe (Lord of the Rings); not a darkened pub but more on the brighter side so folks can see & read the games they're playing. I'd love to see them lean in more with the theme for the decor, though. They have a good variety of their own beers on tap, along with some other options, include non-alcoholic. We had a couple of pints of their stout, which was quite good. There's another place that runs their kitchen, so they have food, too. It would be cool if the food was themed as well, but alas, it's not as of this writing. They also have a really neat looking, very old brick oven, which would be ideal for pizza, but as far as I could tell they don't currently offer pizza and I'm not sure the brick oven is used for anything (yet). The folks working the bar were friendly.

Yelp
Eclectic and sensitive is how I describe TPK . Beautiful wooden tables under woodcrafted arches overhead create a warm and inviting experience . Food menu is Cuban , I believe . Great Cubo sando. Filling . Typical beers . Scotch Ale was good. And role playing games eveywhere. Upstairs , downstairs . All around. Quite a bit going on . Busy. Yet .....copacetic . Worth the check out.

Yelp
Excellent, cozy brewpub. My friends and I were visiting from out of state and remarked on how this would be the place we would hang out at if we lived in Portland. Where to start with this review... From the beer (solid) to the food (solid) to the artwork/decor (solid) to the ambiance (solid) to the staff (solid), we were impressed. We enjoyed the sweet yet textured maduros. Loved the two contrasting sauces all the food came with - a sweet creamy vegetal green sauce and a spicy zinger of a red salsa. We got the Cubano as well as the Tampa Style Cubano - both unctuous and toasty. We also got arepitas de queso, which are like a cheese-filled awesome tater tot with a more smooth texture inside but more crunchy outside. Lastly, we also got the Colombian-style potato salad, which is creamy like a classic American potato salad, but fresher; taters were more firm or there was something crispy in there like apples or jicama. Everything we ate was delicious and worth the price. Overall, we appreciated the attention and care put into everything. Like the beer (and their beautiful tap handles), the tree-slab tables, vending machine of cool things, and curated events. Highly recommend a stop to visitors and envy the locals that can frequent this lovely establishment.

Yelp
Wow! A D&D bar. We listened in on a couple of campaigns going on. Then, we moved to the bar to play a few board games ourselves. The beer was ok and the food looks pretty good. I would love to bring friends and family here because the vibe is off the hook, awesome.

Yelp
So excited they are finally open! I've been looking forward to their opening for some time and was overjoyed that they had such a bustling opening. The beer was all super tasty. I liked the coziness of the space and the neat lighting. Look forward to coming back sometime soon!

Yelp
Just visited TPK for the first time and it was a fantastic experience. Had a great burger and fries and some fabulous beer. The vibe of the bar alone would make me want to come back. But the best part was that a group of us signed up for a one-shot campaign. The GM, Sage, did an amazing job speaking to the various experience levels of our group and we all had an amazing time. As we were walking back to our cars we were already talking about how we wanted to do it all over again!

Yelp
1st brewery visit for our Portland, Oregon trip and WOW it didn't disappoint! Loved the atmosphere, a ton of fun games, great service and the beer is outstanding! We especially loved their award winning Village Lich and their stout, Ashlinger.

Yelp
This is not just a themed brewery but an amazing spot to eat drink and play D&D. Do not hesitate come by and experience this hidden gem.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and service, good food & beer, parking can be a pain but it's what you expect with the location.

Yelp
The beer is on point. Omg. IPA's were amazing. The ambiance has a theme of dungeons and dragons. Service is great. The food is a must try. Cuban and South American was freaking awesome
google avatar

Yelp
One can't rate on potential, but i will be coming back here once they get their food going. big old wood fired oven (from previous tenant Tabor Bread) could be tasty. maybe, given the theme of the place, a nice roasted boar. They've already added a bunch of decorative aspects, and the place has a fine feel. Had two of the beers and they were pretty good. Very friendly service.

Yelp
Hey, this place is really solid. Good beers. All very true to style, well brewed. Had the hazy IPA, Dortmunder Export, Pale Ale, and IPA and were all very good and true to style. Pilsner had the right straw/pilsner malt flavor and hazy was juicy/fruity. Food was really good, Cubano and chicken sandwich were really good. Great service, really nice servers and a nice setting.

Yelp
Good food. Great atmosphere. Great staff. Excellent excellent excellent brews. Love this place and looking forward to going back to play some cards while having a few drinks. Worth checking out!

Yelp
Complete beginners to d&d and we had such a great time doing a beginners campaign with Law. Very straightforward instructions and engaging storytelling. As a parent it's hard deciding what to do on those rare nights we can get a babysitter, but I definitely expect to be back here for another round. Thank you so much!

Yelp
One of the best places you could ever go. It's my new Disneyland and wrote a bards song about it that you will have to hear in person, at this location. Pass an observation check to find me for more details.

Jacob B.

Yelp
Awesome beer. Themed brewery. Dungeons and dragons. THEY HAVE BOARD GAMES. FOOD IS GREAT. Really good job with the space inherited from Tabor Bread. Excited to come back

Yelp
This review is for the food because I don't drink beer or play games. The food at this place is so delicious and fresh and it comes out really fast. We love the yuca fries with cilantro mayo and the arepitas. Kids love the burgers and fries. We were skepts because we were fans of Tabor Bread but now we're totally won over.

Erin M.

Yelp
Not only are the owners and employees fun and great, they go FAR above and beyond to provide an incredible experience with amazing ambiance and DELICIOUS drinks and food. I wish I lived in the area and could come back regularly!!!

Andrew B.

Yelp
Super fun atmosphere and AMAZING BEER. The food operation has McDonald's tier fries and tasty Hispanic classics. And better yet you can roll dice and anyone giving you a weird look is the weirdo. 10/10 would do a drunken drow lady voice again.

Tom M.

Yelp
Tasty beer and nice building/location. Didn't eat there but many seemed happy with their meal.

Scott M.

Yelp
Great space, excellent service, solid beers. I had some kind of fries and franks combo which was awesome. Scotch Ale was top notch. Not a gamer myself, but you don't have to be enjoy this neighborhood brewery.
