TPK is my favorite place in Portland.
I found this spot a while ago when I was learning to play D&D, and I was completely hooked after attending the Intro to D&D session with Max. After trying out a few other intro to D&D games around Portland, this one felt truly special. Max elevated my boring newbie role-playing and made my contributions feel meaningful. Learning the game never felt like memorizing a bunch of rules. I joined the house campaign (Ley Farer's) shortly after, and it has been the best investment.
There is a delightfully eclectic mix of Game Master styles and writers at TPK, but what they all have in common is a commitment to centering the storytelling and ensuring equity at the table. As a new player, this made me feel comfortable taking risks and making mistakes. It has also created a truly unique culture of like-minded players. You will meet some of the most creative, kind, and compassionate people at your table. If you’re sick of playing D&D where exclusion, sexism, tired tropes, and rules-policing are common, you have to play at TPK.
I also took the Introduction to Game Mastering class with Sage. I’ve taken other GMing classes, but none compare. Sage’s teaching style is professional, entertaining, and irreverent. He’s hilarious and centers joy and connection throughout the course. He has a wealth of knowledge to share and offers all the insider secrets you’ll want as a GM. Like the best teachers, though, he also lifts up your style and voice, helping you grow into your own unique GM.
I also have to shout out Kristina, an absolutely phenomenal Game Master. Their theatrical voice acting brings characters to life in a way that’s immersive and unforgettable, and they are consistently kind, genuine, supportive, and have a killer sense of comedic timing.
AND… the food, beer, and cocktails are all excellent! Thank you for providing so many options for gluten- and lactose-free folks like me!
