I'm a long time TJ fan, starting in SoCal. Not everything suits my personal eating eccentricities, and yet I can easily and affordably make this my one and only food shopping destination and some weeks it is. Sure, they are heavier on packaging than I'd prefer, but no more than most places, with the exception of produce. That's one of those compromise situations, and I get it - the time, equipment and hassle of weighing out produce is traded out for prepackaged or priced-by-piece. Most of their packaging is recyclable, and there isn't more than needed to get the job done.
Otherwise, throughout the store there's a great selection of stuff, kind of basics-with-a-twist in addition to the less twisted essentials. Plenty of organic selections, gluten free options, vegan stuff. More convenience type foods than I eat but if you go for that, theirs are pretty yummy judging by the free samples.
Their employees are so freaking nice I think they might be pumping happiness in through their ventilation system. They're knowledgeable and helpful and they seem to enjoy being there. The lines are (almost) never long, the store is super clean, and if you don't like something they'll take it back with a smile, no questions.
Pro tips: think urban shopping. The parking lot is small, the aisles are narrow, it's intimate and clever and hip without being self conscious about it. If you don't like crowds, go early or late and avoid weekends. If you don't mind, it's kinda fun. Try to use a carry basket rather than a cart and it's a lot easier to navigate the crowded periods.
The other pro tip is, wear an extra layer, or maybe a parka. If you don't, though, and you look cold, they'll offer to let you borrow a sweatshirt, because, did I mention, they are super heroes of niceness.
