The Best Spicy Condiment at Trader Joe’s Is the Habanero Hot Sauce | Eater

"This grocery chain's habanero hot sauce is praised for delivering an intense, pure habanero punch — very spicy but with a fresh, fruity note and noticeably low on vinegary acidity. The reviewer buys it reliably and uses it as a versatile condiment: dipping plantain chips straight into it, spooning it on original Pringles, putting it on pizza, and generally keeping it as one of the only bottled hot sauces in the kitchen aside from their homemade version." - Marian Bull

Google
Nice store. Lots of interesting things every time you go. Staff is friendly and helpful. Not the largest Trader Joe's, but they have all the things that you're looking for most of the time. They also have a good price on eggs, but you have to show up early. Limited to 1 carton per person. And to the person that says their foods are processed and not comparable to Sprouts.... I've been to Sprouts, and you pretty much have to have a trust fund to afford to shop there. Trader Joe's labeled products are non GMO, and they keep a great variety of foods that seem perfectly healthy to me. They're not trying to be Sprouts. The food is affordable, interesting, and fresh. I'm a very health conscious and picky consumer; I don't have any problem with their food.

Manager was surprised when I asked him why so many things are out of stock like he didn’t even realize it, take a look at the pictures . I asked him if he looked around, regarding all the empty shelves. He didn’t answer. It’s challenging for them to keep up stock Employees including management stand around discussing business are somewhat clueless that they are blocking customers

I normally always love a Trader Joe's, and although there was nothing wrong with this store, I couldn't find too much to get excited about this time around.

This is my go-to Trader Joe’s ONLY because it’s close to where I live. It is always crowded unless you go during a weekday morning. While some of the employees there are consistently friendly and helpful, my experience with an older woman cashier at checkout was unacceptable. She looked me up and down, rolled her eyes, and deliberately ignored me when it was my turn, yet was warm and chatty with the customers before and after me. This felt like clear micro-aggression, and it made me very uncomfortable. I hope the store addresses this so every customer is treated with equal respect. I have since chosen to ignore her and go to someone else for checkout and have started shopping more at Sprouts/Whole Foods.

Google
I get good customer service but if there’s a long line, why would there be personal conversation going on between the cashier and the customer? Alex the cashier was sharing pictures of plants with a customer while there was a long line! Alex needs to learn to set boundaries, especially when it’s busy and people want to leave! Ridiculous and one of the worst service I’ve received at this location!

Google
First, I love TJ’s. It’s just this location isn’t the best…very crowded, team isn’t friendly, parking is quite a tough thing, especially that the entrance to the strip mall is right at the TJ parking. It’s on a good location, it’s just not ideally located if that makes sense. Prefer other locations, yet this one is closer to me and I cross this route often—so it is what it is.

Google
I recently had an outstanding experience at Trader Joe’s. The employees and staff were incredibly friendly and went above and beyond to assist customers. While walking from the parking lot to the store, I witnessed an employee run from the front door to help a mother with a small child load her groceries and take her cart. Inside the store, another employee promptly approached a customer, offering a cart or basket as her hands were full with various items. Not only were the employees extremely helpful, but the store was also consistently well-stocked and clean. I highly recommend giving it a visit—10/10!

Google
I've been coming to this TJ's for 25 years. I love it. It's always busy, but they're always well staffed and the staff is mostly nice from my experience.

Yelp
Why TJ's is, and always has been, my #1. Today I had received a bit of bad news, so I left work early and headed for home. I needed to stop at TJs to pick up a few things for a friend. I got those things and proceeded to the check out. When the checker gave me the total $40.92, I handed her 2 $20 dollar bills. When she hesitated, I thought she was waiting to see if I had the 2 cents? She than asked if I had $1 and I said no I did not have the change..... This is where without hesitation, the gentleman (I believe he is one of the store managers) who had been bagging my things pulled out his own wallet and gave the checker the balance of my bill. It was then my brain finally reengaged, and I realized what I had done. I immediately said "wait I have another $20" but the gentleman said "no don't worry I got this ". I left the store, sat in my car, and cried. You see, yes, TJ's is a great store, but it is the people who work there that are the best of humanity. Forever, grateful Jen

Yelp
I love me some Trader Joe's! Unfortunately, today I had a really poor shopping experience. There was a Crew Member providing licorice samples near the baked goods. He was being addressed by another Crew Member; I'm guessing a Supervisor. As I was choosing baked goods, I could hear one side of the exchange: the very loud Crew Member with the samples. This loud Crew Member must have been addressed by the "Supervisor" for saying something inappropriate about or to a customer because he was loudly justifying his negative opinions about her gender and appearance. This was very upsetting conversation for the sales floor. I am sure it violates some company policy. As the Supervisor walked away, a third Crew Member approached, and I could see them make knowing and disappointed eye contact in response to the interaction, which was a small relief. It would have been better if they had asked him to leave the floor. Let's do better, Trader Joe's.

Yelp
This Trader Joe's is my local shop. Parking can be a bit of a pain. It's packed into a shopping center with a variety of other retail stores. Love the Trader Joe's branded items, descent vegan options. Love their pizza dough and vegan cheese, salads, pastries, and such. Staff has always been friendly but store can be packed. Checkouts are relatively quick with the amount of staff working but there can be a wait. Sometimes the store feels a bit crammed but worth it for what I need.

Yelp
I came in bc I was looking for cookie butter and left with a couple more things. The store was clean and shelves were stocked despite it being busy. I couldn't find the cookie butter but one of the associates was able to help me find it. All the staff that I talked to were so friendly and helpful. I really enjoyed my shopping experience :)

Yelp
Trader Oceanside never had an issue here from the service to quality of the food. Staff is super friendly and very helpful. I love their flower selection and throughout the store the atmosphere is always positive. I truly enjoy visiting this location!

Yelp
What can I say? The best and most social experience you can get. That's what Trader Joe's is. Maybe there is someone out there that has never been to it and if so, grab your hat and reusable bag and get shopping. Nicest staff around with the best knowledge base around all the products they carry. If something is out, just ask to get the update. If you are interested in using products, just ask to get the info. You just cannot go wrong by going to TJ's! You will more than likely get the best in groceries and even make a friend.

Yelp
Trader Joes never disappoints. Always has some special kind of yummy goodness and someone right there willing to be so helpful. Clean fun environment. But bring back the Tummy Gummy penguins please!

Yelp
Found amazing Azaleas, in three colors! My favorite spring flowers! They everything you want, from fresh produce, herbs, different products and prepared foods than your usual grocery store. Stop whenever I see a Trader Joe's.

Yelp
Lately, there's been awesome selection of items. Recently we've been stocking up on the pad see ew, and their cookie butter ice cream is also amaziiiing. We just picked up the tiramisu and we'll see how good it is. We've also had their pizza/flatbreads also great, the soup dumplings are a classic as well.
google avatar

Alexander E.

Yelp
This is a pretty standard Trader Joe's. The produce, as usual, is fresh and well priced. Lots of variety, in terms of frozen foods and snacks. We're big fans of the Indian microwave meals, in particular.
google avatar

Stephen S.

Yelp
Very good customer experience. All areas were well maintained and when one item didn't have a price, an employee found the price in couple of minutes. Restrooms were clean and well stocked. Prices are moderate but the quality is better than other similar stores. Checkout was quick with a minimal wait time.

Yelp
Well I've meant to write many times as ALL the Trader Joe's are great and are obviously renowned for their focus on customer service. In a world where that has vanished (we left there and went for water at Living Waters in Carlsbad and the juxtaposition of customer care was jaw dropping!) Hence wanting to finally give a big cheery thank you to TJ's! From the fact you can ALWAYS get a human on the phone, to their willingness to assist looking for products, researching items and genuinely seeming to care is very refreshing and makes it the ony store anymore that we thoroughly enjoy heading to. Even when it's busy, it is managed well. As they have said, you might feel like they're flirting with you! There was one young woman who was just terrific...always cheerful and helpful...assisted my daughter and I a few weeks ago in finding some products we couldn't locate and was VERY helpful and cheerful. I believe her name was Mauro. I hope that is right!!!! So thanks again for being practically the last place we can go to and expect to be treated politely, efficiently and effectively. You have always been there for us from securing truffle oil to difficult (to locate) produce! Cheers to the holly days and thanks again!!! Keep setting that example of great customer service in a slightly less friendly world! :) And thank you for having people answer your phones. AMAZING! ;0

Yelp
Rarely get to visit Trader Joe's as I work from home and don't get on the road very much, but I saw a TikTok with a five ingredient pasta dish with Langostino tails, pappardelle, lobster bisque, basil and tomatoes and had to try it for dinner. Stopped here to get all the fixings, and I must say the people that work here are just the absolute nicest employees I have ever seen at any retail store ever. I was looking for the mushroom risotto and one guy who was quite busy unpacking boxes completely dropped what he was doing and escorted me over to where the frozen risotto was. He could have just shrugged and pointed but he led me right to it. Cashier was also super nice. Asked me what I was cooking and how my day was...just so pleasant. I wanna move in now and just live there. I doubt they would even mind.

Yelp
We love our local TJ's. Staff is like family. Always a good vibe!! My daughter likes finding the lemur. They always have new items and if you don't like something. They will make it right.

Yelp
As a Yelp friend of mine who's part of the always helpful Trader Joe staff pointed out, the company founder's a stoned-out surfer, and it shows in their inventory. lots and lots of unique, off-the-wall munchies. Two-Buck Chuck's an affordable addition to pot roasts (Cab) and mussels (Sauvignon Blanc). they carry my favorite flour tortillas. Love the cheese selection that includes Delice de Bourgogne (a triple-cream, French brie), Stilton (the Brits do bleu cheese right), and Lemon Ricotta (when it's in season -- roughly between Thanksgiving and early December) on a graham cracker tastes like cheesecake. TJ's fontina is my favorite pizza cheese. their ready-made bags of pizza dough are handy when I'm not ambitious enough to make my own, and their gourmet pepperoni's still my inner eight-year-old's favorite topping. I figured out awhile back when faced with temptation, it's best not to procrastinate. Pork Shu Mai (in the freezer section) steamed for twelve minutes and served with a Sichuan chili oil and soy sauce dip are a guilty pleasure, and I nearly always pick up a couple of boxes. I hardly ever remember to check-in, but yeah, I'm a regular.

Yelp
It pains me to do this cause I love Trader Joe's but this is a disgusting discovery. Tonight we cooked our steak from here and this is what it looked like. No matter how long we cooked it it was still red. This happens because meat has been treated with something such as nitrates, or gas and chemicals. This is disgusting and upon researching apparently Trader Joe's refuses to disclose where they get organic items so safe to say I'm not sure I'll be shopping at my favorite store anymore because this is so disgusting. Especially when you're paying $15 a steak. I threw this away. And again this is after cooking it for well beyond well done. Feel obligated to share so people stop buying meat here.

Yelp
Nice location and good selection, great staff as well! The produce has good quality, especially avocados, carrots, and blueberries!

Yelp
While visiting I stopped in to pick up a few grocery items. They had everything I needed. I bought some mini beef tacos but did not care for them. The crust is to thick. I do like the pub cheese. The other items were veggies. Eric was my cashier and he was very friendly. The one reason I like Trader Joes is that all the employees are friendly and always willing to help. They will take the initiative to ask if you need anything esp. when you are standing with a blank stare on your face. LOL I write every quarter and ask them to please put one near my house. At least within 30 minutes. I am in between two military bases and three good size towns and still no Trader Joes. I have to drive over an hour to shop at one. The others are all 2 1/2 or more hours away. Please come to Jacksonville, Morehead City, New Bern, North Carolina. This visit 2-9-23

Yelp
I wanted to update my review of this place. At least this location. My sister paid for my bachelorette party bat tenders to get food and drinks from Trader Joe's. Had some pretty good food so I thought I'd go in again and try some different stuff. This location is cleaner & has friendly staff. Just the shoppers are low-key rude. They are very "privileged attitudity" and don't know the words excuse me or sorry. The way I also hear them talking to staff is rude. I tried the pita crackers and soooo good. The mozzarella balls marinated on oil is good as well along with chocolate drop candies. I also tried the frozen fried macaroni cheese balls. Pop them in the oven and they're delicious! Also tried the shredded potatoes and regular potatoes. Those were good too. Though this Trader Joe's is older and smaller. Still a good location with for the most part, friendly staff.

Yelp
Love Trader Joe's. This is not my go to location but good if I am over in that area. Trader Joe's is a great company to work for from what I here but it is also a great place for customers to get good products, good prices, great customer service. You can ask to sample something, and they will, at least pre covi-d19 pandemic, not sure if that is still in effect or not. They also take back opened items if something is wrong or you don't like them. They have some of my favorite products, and they used to carry amazing pretzel buns/bread, but no longer. Great selection of fruits, veggies, breads, desserts, frozen items, cheeses, water, wine, etc. Another great little feature, pre-covid, was there sample station, to try some of their product that they wanted to highlight. Always nice to get a tasty little snack or drink. I have never had a bad experience at a TJ, and I have been going to them since 1998.

Yelp
I love the variety of food available at Trader Joe's, at prices far lower than Albertsons/Vons stores! Everytime I've asked for help in locating an item inside the store, every employee has been helpful. My newest favorite item is the Ricotta & Lemon Zest Ravioli, paired with their Rosatella Pasta Sauce, and each item only costs $3.99, and is enough for two people! Love this store :)

Lauren S.

Yelp
I have shopped at this store for years. The staff is always friendly and I rarely am disappointed with my purchage. The food is great and prices are better than most supermarkets.
google avatar

Stephanie T.

Yelp
Always seems to be a pleasant experience every time I go to a Trader Joe's. Food always is fresh and staff is always friendly. I recently started having their artichoke sauce with their chicken sausage and some pasta and it's been ooh soo good.
google avatar

Gina B.

Yelp
I love Trader Joe's. They have a wide variety of items and the staff is always super friendly and helpful. If there is anything wrong with an item you have purchased, they will provide a refund or exchange, and are happy to do so. The only reason I did not provide a five star review is that some of their produce does not survive until the expiration date.

Yelp
Fans of TJ and this store is a bit larger than the one in MD. The fruits are good and so is be customer service. I found Maple cookies today which Safeway carried years ago. I'll get a box with each visit to TJ.

Tammy M.

Yelp
This store is very dirty and the customer service is terrible. Rick is supposed to be a manager or a captain . Why they are called captains in the first place is the most childish thing that I've ever heard. I was trying to find a item and although Rick did tell me where to find the item , he looked at me with total disgust and I could tell he was very bothered that I asked him in the first place. I feel like it could have been the fact that I'm not the correct race. There are very little employees of color employed at this location. I will never step foot at this store again. I believe if you don't look the way they expect customers to look they will treat you with disrespect and offer very little customer service. Especially the management team Rick has zero customer service skills.

Yelp
This TJ is located on Vista Way and next to Lamps Plus lighting store. Plently of parking and plenty of friendly staff members. They stock fresh vegetables daily and I really browsing their selection of cheese. My favorite one is the Spainsh Cheese Tapas Sampler. Three flavors (manchego, cabra al vino, and iberco) all togeter for a low price of $5. These are currently their new products as of November: 1. Cuban Style Citrus Garlic Bowl. 2. Harvest Grain Salad. 3. Chili Onion Crunch. 4. Soy Creamy Cherry Chocolate Chip Non-Dairy Frozen Dessert. 5. Leafy Greens with Butternut Squash Salad Kit. They also have their TJ Trio of Cookie Baking Mixes. Superb and yummy! Different mixes chewy Toffee Oat, warm Cinnadoodle, and luxurious Triple Chocolate. Just add eggs, butter, milk, and love and you will get yummy cookies! I pair this with their vanilla bean ice cream. Yum!!! Their rainbow honey bottles are back in stock and I highly recommend it especially on their blueberry waffles. Since it is the holidays, TJ also has an advent calendar that's only $1 where kids can have chocolate per day. Yum!

Yelp
I frequently do my grocery shopping at Trader Joe's because this location has awesome prices on their grocery items in their store. The cashiers are very helpful in assisting me if I am not able to find what products I want to purchase on their shelves. I like the idea that I could buy a single banana for 20 cents versus buying the whole bunch of bananas I primarily shop at the Vista Way location due to I really enjoy eating their delicious Breaded Cod Fish Fillets. I buy (2) boxes at $8.00 per box. I also purchased (3) packages of the Breaded Chicken Tenderloin Breasts, at a reasonable price. After I bake these Breaded Chicken Tenderloin Breasts in the oven for 20 minutes. I serve them with white rice and green beans. It is very convenient when I don't have the time to cook and it saves me a lot of time, plus this is a very healthy and flavorful meal for my mother and I. Trader Joe's also has a great selection of organic fruits, veggies, meats, trail mixes with reduced fats, and nutritional dairy products. I always leave this store with a smile on my face.

Yelp
Trader Joe's is one of my favorite stores to shop in while traveling. This store is conveniently located in Carlsbad and I have shopped here many times for all of my Trader Joe needs. The staff here are very helpful and friendly, as I needed help finding select items. I'll be a forever fan of Trader Joe's!

Linda T.

Yelp
Always hire good humans. Very friendly staff that knows every product carried by TJ. Very clean location. Tim is always out in parking lot picking up trash and carts

Yelp
I wanted to review the staff and management here. A month ago my 1 year old had a febrile seizure while shopping here. I was also with my 5 year old. The staff along with some patrons came to help me and called the ambulance for me. I was really flustered, and all over the place. One lady stayed with me and hugged me the whole time and calmed me down. I planned on just leaving my groceries there. They rung me up and the store paid for my groceries. I forget their names now because it's been a month but I will be forever grateful for their kindness and generosity.
google avatar

Joel C.

Yelp
This Trader Joe's is one of the busiest I have seen and the parking lot is equally bad. Staff were miserable which is something I'm not used to seeing at a Trader Joe's. Would it kill you to smile and have a conversation? Staff seemed extra judgmental towards customers, not sure why. The selection seemed a little dull compared to the Bressi Ranch Carlsbad location as well.
google avatar

Kris B.

Yelp
Trader Joe's is typically my "fancy" grocery shopping, like when my best friends come into town. We buy all the decadent stuff like mini quiches, nice cheeses, pate, crusty baguettes, Bag 'o Caesar salad, and wine ... a shit ton of wine. But recently I realized I don't have to wait until my friends visit to treat myself. Why not buy some fresh flowers because it's a Tuesday? They also have this really good oatmeal exfoliating soap - almond ginger scent. The employees here always seem super happy. This may be the place I work after I retire. Stock shelves, cashier, give free samples, help customers. It seems like a great place to work.

Renee G.

Yelp
I am so tired of the obvious favoristism and lack of diversity at this location! I ahve shopped here for more than ten years and in that time I have only seen one African-American. There are no people of color working at this location. Not in 10 years. There is an abundance of young pretty white girls, but no men or women of color. This is absolutely horrible. Upper management pay attention the location manager is clearly not willing to follow diversity rules put in place to decrease discrimination and situations just like this one. Just check the reviewees, all white but me and Savannah F (read her review).

Yelp
I love that I can find interesting cheeses, wines and side dish ideas. Produce is great. The workers are always pleasant and helpful. I ask about the wines and get steered toward specific bottles of my liking.

Yelp
I shop here so much that it's time for a review update. This place is king of quick meals and even has a decent convenience food section. The salad selection is large, and they offer forks at check out. One thing to be leery of is the lengthy ingredient lists of some of the dressings, but personally they don't bother me... I mean, they make kale taste yummy. I've even tried several of the wraps and the tofu spring rolls. Who knew pre-made tofu spring rolls would actually be delicious from a cold case at a market?? I still steer clear of the sushi though. Ralph's, Frazier Farms and Oceanside Sprouts have really good sushi made on-the-spot; some items even contain real crab. The pressed juices are still lacking but I can go to a juicery for my fix. They now have *one* loose leaf Black Forest flavored tea in a tin. I saw a lady bring her recyclables to the register and learned they take back their bottles and pay you. I get meal ideas from the Demo station, and free coffee as well. My new perception on why my favorites disappear (besides being seasonal like mango products or being a slow seller), is one I researched online: this store carries around 3,000 UPCs, while large format grocery stores carry around 30,000. Being small, changing up items keeps things fresh. I did stop shopping here for a bit because I grew tired of having same-old same old. Overall, this place is a cross-town drive for me, and I live near quite a few other stores, including a Walmart with a grocery section. I come here for the quality of the customer service and overall experience. I love TJs in general. Pros: - easy return policy - customer service - can buy any can or bottle as a single - see previous review Cons: - stuffy, hot restrooms - crappy parking - sometimes sell out of items - iffy salad ingredient lists

Yelp
The store has great food, happy and hard working employees, and samples that always cause me to buy more than whatever I had on my list. ...but you can't find bigger locations? It feels like every weekend is Black Friday, and some unfortunate soul is going to get trampled while trying to by Inner Peas.

Yelp
FROZEN FOOD OUT OF FREEZER: I am writing this review so that more people will pay attention to something that may be a problem. This is not the first time I see frozen food seating in a corner of the store waiting to be stored in the freezer . I am not a health Dep. inspector but I would like to know what is the acceptable time for frozen food to stay out of the freezer without defrosting and causing the possibility of growing bacteria. Please everyone keep your eyes open to this practice next time you visit any traders joes . I have seen the same at the Trader Joe's in Carlsbad too . I noticed this specific batch was out for at least 5 minutes , the other containers maybe more , I couldn't tell .

Yelp
Luz is the best! She walked me over to help me find exactly what I was looking for. That was especially nice! She was so nice and patient with me. She is very friendly, professional, and sweet! She even let me try a sample of one to make sure it was the right one! I got a few nice snack/ chocolates. In Oceanside: 1.) Mini sandwich crispy cracker snack with a soft cheddar powdery cheese. $2.69 2.) Pack of 3 milk chocolate bar. $1.79 3.) Cute little jellybean looking chocolate covered espresso coffee beans 99 cents. = $5.47 total I had a wonderful experience here it is nice and cool inside. Gender neutral restrooms. There is a greeter at the door now! Free samples of featured items, today it was dried strawberries. I believe they still have free coffee in the back. There are plenty of organic, natural, gluten-free options and varieties here. A wonderful small grocery shop. The aisles are pretty narrow, I accidentally bumped into someone walking by. Overall, really great place. It is well organized, categorized, and clean. The staff have friendly great customer service especially Luz! (Also, Roarke if he is still here!) Awesome Trader Joe's!

Yelp
The most difficult thing about shopping at Trader Joe's is only buying the items that I came in for. Every time I come in, without a grocery bag, thinking I'm only buying one or two things, but there are so many delicious items that by the time I make it to the check out I have four or five extra items that were not on my list. My favorite treats are the Dunker's, Pound Plus Milk Chocolate and Speculoos Cookie Butter Ice Cream. My newest favorite is the Ube (Purple Yam) Ice Cream. Other favorites my fiancée buys to help save time cooking lunch or dinner is Trader Joe's Mandarin Orange Chicken, Masala Simmer sauce, and variety of curry sauces.

Heather P.

Yelp
I really like Trader Joe's for so many reasons. Friendly, helpful, efficient staff is a big one. Inexpensive, high quality cut flowers is what I 'd like to highlight just now. A $3.99 bouquet that lasted weeks!!! Other grocery stores that offer bargain bouquets have fallen short, multiple times. Just want to give my props to TJ on this little matter! Thanks!

Yelp
Wow. Hadn't been to this location in a while as Bressi Ranch is normally my spot! But heaters outside while waiting in the rain. Masks and cleaning going on by all employees. Clean inside and still friendly. Boy do I miss the sip of coffee and tasty try of foods... but well done Crew! Will be back

Yelp
My first visit to the trader joe's .it wasn't the product that was a turn off it was the way employees we being spoken to. Now in fairness I wasn't sure what was going on, but on thing I was sure of it was that these conversations should be done privately I am no keane on treating people poorly. Regardless of what badge i am wearing I want be treated the same way I treat others . Respect So as the conversation started to get a bit heated I decided it's time to leave Whole foods was looking much better A lesson to management , don't let your title get to your head .someday the same person you are looking down at might be the person you are interviewing with Stay humble

Yelp
Usually have really nice cashiers that help me out here but Matthew, the guy with the gray long hair, was quite rude today. He seemed to be so into his convo with these white ladies whom were in front of me but as soon as I was being checked out his whole attitude shifted. He never once made eye contact, he was more concerned with looking towards the produce section than ringing me up. I also noticed him just dropping my items in the bag with little care..Also, don't smack gum with your mouth open like a child. Really odd service today to say the least. I'll stick to the Trader Joe's I'm Carlsbad, they're nicer to every person of color.

Yelp
This store is fantastic! It is medium sized and has so many health food products and products that are gluten and dairy free. This store was impressive with its selection and reduced prices. They had a few items I would have loved to try if we were going back to the hotel right after. They have a nice selection of produce, dairy/non-dairy items, carbs, and meat. I would definitely return.
