New NYC Filipino Restaurant Tradicionale Opens in Manhattan | Eater NY

"Opened by the team behind Hell’s Kitchen fast-casual Filipino spot Tradisyon, this Chelsea newcomer explores Filipino Spanish dishes under chef Anton Dayrit, from baby octopus adobo and longanisa fried rice with crab to prawns in the coconutty alavar sauce and a take on his mother’s lengua stew. The drinks list, designed by La French Pour’s Nicolas Brimau (who had passed away recently) and Jennifer D’Ippolito Brimau, leans on Filipino ingredients with options like the Girl’s Dinner, a martini with pandan and coconut; the Pinya, a pineapple margarita; and the tamarind-ish Anghang Negroni. Run by AJC Hospitality (Dayrit, Joey Chanco, and Carla Caramat), the restaurant is also meant to function as a communal space, with plans for kamyan dinners in the private dining room and a reservations-only cocktail lounge, Casa 156, to come at the same address." - Nadia Chaudhury

I've been always wanting to come here. I'm Filipino and I think it's rare to have an upscale Filipino restaurant in NYC. We came during new year very excited to try all the food. We got off 23st PATH and walk around 10 minutes. The space was smaller than I thought. Maybe cause I think Filipino restaurant are usually packed with large party? I was surprised none of the staff were Filipino. We ordered two cocktail, sisig, Kare kare, and dinuguan tacos. I love dinuguan so that was exciting. The food is on the pricier side (see receipt pic) Kare kare for $47 😭 I just came back from the Philippines and thought take me back lol the food was overall good. To be honest, I was expecting more considering the high price 🥹 it was nice but probably won't come back again. There was no spark 🙈 The staff was nice tho! Hope the restaurant can improve the food quality because I'm proud that there was an upscale Filipino restaurant in NYC.

Excellent elevated Filipino food. The flavors and ingredients were authentic, and the presentation was rich. The flavors were intense and complex. I especially loved the tacos and the kare kare short ribs. The dessert didn't do much for me though. The waiter was very friendly, attentive and helpful. On one hand the place looks very cozy, dim lit, even romantic. On the other hand, the tables are essentially next to each other and the acoustics are not good, so there is a lot of noise and no intimacy.

The flavors of the dishes served took me straight back home but with a refined, elevated twist. From the moment you walk in, the ambience feels luxurious yet very welcoming. Each dish is thoughtfully crafted, the ingredients are high-quality, and the service is truly exceptional. If you’re looking for a modern upscale Filipino dining experience that still honors tradition, this place is unmatched. The service was warm, attentive, and genuinely Filipino in hospitality. Thank you so much Paolo, David, Damian and Chef Anton for bringing home to us last night! What a heartfelt experience!

Google
So happy we made reservations at the newest and hottest Filipino-Spanish restaurant in the city! The food was incredible and the vibes were top tier. Every dish was packed with flavor, comforting and nostalgic but elevated in the best way. You have to try the Lobster Palabok, Dinuguan Tacos, and Short Rib Kare Kare. The Pinya cocktail was a favorite too! The team was so warm and welcoming, and we even got to meet one of the owners. Loved our experience and can’t wait to come back!

Google
Recommended by a friend to check this spot and it was an awesome experience! The tapaz blew my mind I had the pomelo salad, ceviche and lobster vermicelli which were beyond my expectations. The entrees were also really flavorful and have depth in different flavor profile. Service was above and beyond, even the friendly owner came down to make sure everything was great and as expected. Really enjoyed dining experience here, would come back for sure!

Elevated traditional Filipino-Spanish flavors! We came on a Tuesday night with a reservation and sat in the cozy back section. It was pretty dark but that's part of the vibe. (I had to get hubs and my brother to light some of my food pictures with their phones. Real teamwork.) Cocktails are split between Filipino-inspired and American classics. My favorites: Pinya (refreshing, not too sweet) and Anghang ("spicy" in Tagalog, perfectly balanced). The Fili-Flip leans dessert-style: rich and creamy, fun to try once but a little too heavy for me to order again. The servers actually know their stuff and give honest recommendations. Food highlights: *KINILAW: bright, tangy, perfect. GET THIS!!!! *SISIG: crispy pork hash, salty and addictive. I would get this again. *DINUGUAN TACOS: rich, spicy, unforgettable. *LOBSTER PALABOK: meaty, tasty, but not heavy. *PANCIT CANTON: comfort noodles done right. Hot pork lechon on top. *DESSERTS: TURON with ube/vanilla ice cream and mochi-ish UBE BIBINGKA, both great. We left full, happy, and rolled back to Penn Station. Tradicionale stays true to traditional flavors while giving them a thoughtful, elevated edge. I'm still dreaming about the Kinilaw and plotting round two. NOTES/TIPS: * In Chelsea, about a 10-minute walk from Penn Station and totally worth it. * Reserve on Resy. Optional coat check. Though it's a bit serious-looking in the back, it's all casual.

Google
This is my new favorite restaurant. I love everything about it!! From the food, to decor, to drinks, to ambiance and service— everyone is so warm and inviting and hospitable. The food is absolutely incredible and so flavorful. Love their modern take on traditional Filipino food! I’ve been back twice in 2 weeks and you really cannot go wrong with anything on the menu but absolutely do not miss out on the garlic rice or the tacos!!

The dining experience was made even better by the excellent service from Mr. Santos. He was attentive, polite, and efficient, making sure our orders were accurate and served promptly. His friendly attitude and willingness to assist added a warm, welcoming touch to the meal, reflecting the kind of hospitality that makes guests feel comfortable and well taken care of.

Yelp
A Must-Visit for Elevated Filipino Cuisine in NYC Tradicionale Restaurant is an absolute gem--cozy, chic, and effortlessly welcoming. The ambiance strikes the perfect balance between intimate and stylish, making it ideal for a date night, dinner with friends, or anyone wanting to explore Filipino cuisine in a modern setting. The Lobster Palabok is a true standout: savory, luxurious, and an elevated take on the beloved classic. It honors the traditional flavors while adding a refined twist that feels both indulgent and thoughtful. The Seafood Sinigang is another winner. It hits all the right notes--bright, sour, and deliciously umami. Every spoonful just sings on the taste buds, capturing the soul of the dish while presenting it in a fresh, contemporary way. For the more adventurous palate, the Dinuguan Tacos (a playful Filipino spin on blood sausage) are an absolute must-try. They may sound divisive, but they're surprisingly light, nuanced, and full of flavor. A clever, delightful nod to classic Filipino ingredients. All in all, Tradicionale delivers authentic Filipino cuisine dressed up with sophistication and creativity--a beautiful melding of tradition and modern culinary craft. A visit here feels like discovering one of NYC's best kept secrets. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Very lucky to get a reservation at this newly opened restaurant featuring Filipino cuisine! Lots of interesting cocktails and the menu has small plates/appetizers along with some main entrees. As a Filipina, I was eager to see if the taste would be more traditional or 'modernized'. I was surprised that it had a wonderful mix of both. The surprise dish for me was the ceviche as it had a wonderful mix of seafood and a tasty heat that made it memorable. The sisig was good as was the pork belly/lechon pancit. We would have eaten a whole plate of the lechon!! Crispy pata (braised pork knuckle) was wonderful, especially with the accompanying sauces. And while there are many ways to make biningka, their cake was tasty and shareable! Service was attentive with multiple team members assisting to monitor the flow. Lots more I would try so looking forward to supporting them more!

Yelp
From the team behind Tradisyon, Tradicionale is a restaurant focused on more elevated Filipino dishes and Filipino-Spanish fusion food. Started off with the kinilaw which featured fresh ceviche with a coconut-y citrus-y sauce and some crispy garlic pieces. The lobster palabok had very chewy (and thicker) vermicelli noodles. Loved the strong lobster, shrimp sauce and how it was pretty well seasoned. The kare kare featured pretty tender beef pieces in a thick peanut sauce. While it think the peanut flavors and seasoning could have been amplified, I liked their shrimp paste which helped bring more umami. The eggplant, bokchoy, and beans were pretty good. The kang kong was fire! I love morning glory and it had the seasoning and crispy garlic that I wanted to accompany my veggies. My Filipino friend said he could still taste the authentic flavors amidst of their interpretation of these classic dishes. For desserts, despite sharing that they serve their turon "cold," ours was semi-warm with a good crisp. I just wish it was bigger. The ube ice cream was good but nothing crazy. I did like the chewy coconut strips. For drinks, the fil-flip had a consistently like a milkshake with a prominent ube aroma and crunchy coconut flakes. I saw a milo drink and asked if it could be made with liquor, so our server ordered an espresso martini. It was pretty good, but wish the milo part was stronger. The restaurant is still relatively new. The space is intimate with its dim lighting. Good amount of seating with a bar in the middle. Our server was nice and attentive!

Yelp
I visited Tradicionale three times during my NYC trip. The thing I appreciate most in restaurants is consistency - anyone can have a great experience once, but to have one three times in a row? That's the mark of excellence. This restaurant is young, but the people behind it have the wisdom of folks who've been in the business (either directly or indirectly) for a while. The focus on flavorful dishes, tasty drinks, and a convivial vibe is clear. The space itself evokes a Parisian bistro with a tropical twist, which I love. You never know where the night will lead you - dinner and then drinks at the bar chatting with interesting folks, or an impromptu karaoke party in the back room...everything is possible! I'm truly excited to have a great option for upscale Filipino food (and experience). If I had this kind of experience just two months after their opening, I can't wait to see what magic they create with more time under their belt. Bravo!

Yelp
Wow! Such a beautiful restaurant with a dark and intimate vibe. We came here for a birthday. The service was super attentive and kind and great with recommendations. We got the lobster palabok and duck tacos. While the portions were tapa sized, the flavor was there! Especially in the duck tacos. So much flavor. Delicious! Definitely recommend coming and will be back to try other dishes!

Yelp
There aren't many Filipino restaurants in Manhattan, especially an elevated one with Spanish influences as well. The space is beautifully decorated with a sexy and dark interior. While the space is more fancy, it was a pleasant surprise to see so many Filipino lolas dining here as well. It's got that traditional and modern twist. It is recommended to order one large dish or two tapas for each person to be shared family-style. We ordered the Kinilaw ($20), Spicy Prawns Alavar ($27), Pancit Canton with Lechon ($30), and a side of White Rice ($4). Both tapa dishes were excellent, especially with the sauce. I did find the prawns to be overpriced though for only 3 pieces despite the delicious curry sauce. Kinilaw is a Filipino ceviche using kalamansi, which gives it a bright citrus note covering the cubes of steelhead trout. It's very similar to salmon, but a bit milder (I had to research this a bit because I really thought it was salmon). As for the pancit, this was filling with good portion of noodles. I only wish there were more than 4 pieces of crispy lechon though. I also had the Girl's Dinner ($21) cocktail to pair with the food. It had a flavor that was so hard to describe as I was expecting it to be more of a pandan drink. It also came with a few pieces of crab crackers, which was fun. This was a unique drink, but probably wouldn't get it again. The tables are a bit cramped and close to each other. Plus, service was a bit slow at time as they are still pretty new. At the end of our meal, one of the owners did come by to checkin on us. She was extremely sweet and felt like family. Overall, all the food was delicious and would love to check out the rest of the menu with more people. It's pretty cool that they also offer Kamayan dinners here too for big parties, which is always fun.

Yelp
Greeted by a very kind host. Several very unique cocktail options. While I applaud the experimentation, I'm not sure they were my specific cup of teas. The food comes through though. The sisig is that perfect fatty and sizzling bite--definitely need the garlic rice. The lobster palabok has a recognizable seafood-taste that's not necessarily bad. I finished it, but I think to some it may taste funky. The clams tinola soup was deep and delish. The only item I could have done without is the pomelo salad. Fresh but felt like it was lacking a lot of substance per bite.

Yelp
True rating: 4.5 stars We went to Tradicionale on a weeknight for dinner and was surprised to see it packed! It's great to see that and we were seated right away. It's bigger on the inside than i expected, but is similarly structured as other restaurants in Chelsea that are longer with a nice bar in the middle. Decor was very on theme! We got two drinks, the Fili-Flip and the Pinya. The Fili-Flip is more desserty, but loved the ube flavor of it with the foam. The pinya margarita was great and mezcal forward which we enjoyed. Food-wise, we overall liked most of what we got with one dish that we probably wouldn't get again. It was somewhat coursed out where tapas were served first and all main dishes together, family style. - Dinuguan Tacos are a MUST try. We really enjoyed this fusion dish and it was a great balance of flavors. - Pancit Canton with Lechon was amazing. It had a very traditional canton taste and the lechon was nice and crispy. Would have wished it was more chopped up to integrate into the dish though vs on top! - Sizzling Short Rib was good in its peppery sauce. It cut easily like butter which was great, but we didn't feel like it was worth its hefty price tag. The only other thing that I'd dock some points off was service. It was overall friendly, but we felt it was a bit touch and go for us. It seemed like the servers knew some of the other patrons and spent a lot of time with them that it took close to 20 mins for us to be asked for our order when we had been ready. Water was offered to us right away so i wouldn't say service was horrible though, and they checked on us more throughout the evening. Despite the pains of still ironing out a handful of things, I'd absolutely go back and try the rest of the menu!

Yelp
If you've never had Filipino ube rice cake, let this be your sign! This NEW filipino-spanish bistro in Chelsea is giving filipino classics a modern, upscale twist. I went with a friend who has spent some years in the Philippines and she confirmed everything was DELICIOUS and LEGIT. We got all the filipino favorites, including the national cocktail Weng Weng, household staple Kang Kong, and traditional dessert Bibingka. The team poured so much love and thoughts into every course they serve. The atmosphere is intimate and welcoming with a dim lighting, perfect for a date night. *Pomelo Salad $18 * My friend and I agreed if we could only eat one salad for the rest of our lives, this would be it. It tasted so tropical because of the coconut-y, spicy vinaigrette with fresh pomelo and lychee. The shredded cabbage and corn nuts added some crunch as well. *Kinilaw Filipino Style Ceviche $18 ** This filipino ceviche was so unique. The coconut-based sauce had a tangy and spicy flavor that reminded me of tom yum. It also came with a generous amount of salmon. *Sizzling Short Rib $52 This slow-braised short rib was served on a pan with a thick gravy and shiitake mushrooms. The meat was tender with threads that nearly melted in my mouth. *Pork Humba $30 * *Garlic Rice $6 * If you're getting the pork, make sure to add the garlic rice. The pork belly was glazed in a sweet and savory sauce that leaned a bit salty on its own, but paired beautifully with the rice. *Kang Kong Bagoong $14 Sauteed spinach with shrimp paste, but wow, sometimes the simplest dishes hit the hardest. *Ube Bibingka Our server surprised us with this warm bibingka, made with ube, salted egg yolk, shredded coconut, and condensed milk. The soft, pudding-like texture made it even more comforting!

Yelp
Really delicious and different! We had the pomelo salad and tacos for a starter, then shared the sizzling short rib with garlic rice for our main. We made ourselves get the ice cream and spring roll for dessert. Every single dish was a banger! Our favorite was the short rib--perfectly juicy and tender, and the rice and gravy felt like the perfect comfort food. Our server was friendly and helpful, and we thoroughly enjoyed our night. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
3.5 stars. Sometimes I am thrilled to have tried a spot in its opening week. Other times, I may regret taking a gamble on a place that's yet to work out the kinks and make tweaks based on initial feedback. Though I was very excited about Tradicionale and still believe it can improve as it gets its sea legs, our dinner there falls in the latter category. The experience was generally inconsistent: some things were not very good, others were okay to decent. Service was also touch and go: everything we ordered arrived quickly and was served all at once (as opposed to coursed out) yet water was hard to come by. Though I'm happy to have tried Tradicionale, I think they'll need some refining if they hope to become a mainstay in the area. Came here as a part of two on a Saturday night around 8pm. The space was probably about half-full, with some parties opting to sit in the back dining room (which we didn't see) and others sitting toward the front, near the bar. The space is similar to a lot of Chelsea/9th Avenue restaurants, long and thin with an emphasis on presenting a fun, welcoming, and lively vibe to folks passing by. I had read that the cocktails here were pretty impressive, so I was eager to see what the offerings were. As it turned out (and I'm not sure if things have changed since our evening there), Tradicionale was still working on filling out its bar when we dined there, offering one red wine and one white wine by the glass --off menu -- that you could order if cocktails weren't your thing. Our server told us that they did plan to expand their beverage menu at some point, but did not provide a timeline. At first glance, the cocktails looked super interesting and unique. I give Tradicionale points for that alone, as it's hard to come up with drink options that are as exciting as they are approachable. That said, the execution left much to be desired. I can't find the drink menu online but I had a savory martini-esque drink that kind of reminded me of two different Tom Yum soup cocktails I've had (two, you say?! yes, it's true) but way less good. My partner's drink was a bit better but there was a ton of heavy whipped cream on top which threw off the flavor/texture balance and also made the drink hard to sip. Food-wise, dishes are meant to be shared here which is always our go-to dinner approach anyway. The menu has a lot of potential and is very exciting on paper, but the execution was not there in quite a few cases. The concepts are there, though, so I'm optimistic that with time, the balance can be improved upon. Eats, below: Pomelo Salad w/ pomelo, crisp cabbage, corn nuts, peanuts, cucumbers, spiced coconut vinaigrette: A- The presentation left some to be desired but the flavors were all there. Unique and creative, making use of seasonal produce, this is salad is definitely unlike anything I've tried before. And that's impressive, because your girl eats salads more than just about anything else. My only note is that either the dressing or the moisture from the citrus -- or a combination of the two -- weighed the salad down considerable and made things a bit soggy by the end. A little less heavy-handed and it would be golden. Prawns Alavar w/ crab fat, coconut milk, curry, lemongrass, aromatics, chili: B Textures were there but the flavors were muted. I was excited because absolutely love coconut curry and lemongrass, but this dish ended up being the least memorable of the night. Dinuguan Tacos w/ dark pork stew, crispy chicharron, corn tortillas, cilantro, chili oil: A+ The clear standout of the meal, absolutely mouthwateringly delicious. Super flavorful, the chicharron punctuating the flavor of the pork stew while adding great texture. Baby Octopus Adobo: B- I was really really excited and the presentation was beautiful but the execution sadly was not there for me. I'd expect a dish like this to be packed with flavor but this was pretty one note and kind of under-seasoned. It has the potential to be a knockout but perhaps some tweaking needs to be done with the recipe. Kinilaw (Filipino Style Ceviche) w/ steelhead trout, coconut milk, coconut vinegar, coconut water, tropical fruit, cilantro, chili, crispy shallots: B I really wanted to like this but the balance was off, which I guess was a bit of a theme here. Very spicy, which is not an issue in it of itself because I love me some spice, but it was at the expense of any other flavors coming through. The dish looked yummy but was generally under-seasoned such that the heat didn't work to the dish's advantage. Service was also inconsistent. Everything we ordered came out all at once which was a bit overwhelming and we weren't allowed to use the vacant table next to us to create more space which made the table precariously crowded. We were also often in need of water which is a pet peeve of mine. That said, everyone who worked there was very nice and personable -- as I keep saying, I think they'll refine their rhythm in time.

Yelp
I have not been to the actual restaurant nor have I had any of the food here yet, so this review is strictly based on the whole lechon that we ordered for catering at my son's first birthday at a different location. I must say, being Filipino, I know a good lechon when I see one and taste one. And this lechon was absolute perfection! The meat was so juicy and flavorful, and the skin was perfectly crispy, not chewy or tough! My guests raved about it. The delivery and carving service of the lechon was so convenient and easy also. This is absolutely perfect for a special occasion! We had so much left over even after our guests went back for multiple servings!

Yelp
We enjoyed our time at Tradicionale, a newer Filipino-Spanish bistro in the Chelsea area - Their menu is pretty extensive, offering various mains, sides, and beverages. We started off with the following shareables: +Mushroom Croquetas - filled with roasted shiitake mushrooms in a breaded, deep-fried form, served with a salted egg aioli +the Lobster Palabok - prepared with vermicelli noodles, smoked fish, pork rinds, crispy garlic, lobster meat, and scallions, with a delectable roasted lobster gravy +and, the Vegetable Lumpia - filled with carrots, jicama, cabbage, green beans, and sprouts For our mains, we tried the Sizzling Shortrib, the Kare Kare Short Rib, and the Filipino Roast Chicken - all were generous portions, aesthetically presented, and easily shared amongst our party. Service was friendly and attentive, and the space is modern and sophisticated - loved the nice bar area and the exposed white beams! On a side note, I LOVE that their restaurant maintains an adults-only dining experience! A great spot for a get-together or a date night. +shareables +Lobster Palabok +tasty entrees +friendly service

Yelp
We ordered the kinilaw, side of garlic rice, and pancit with lechon and omg the flavor of everything was soooo good and tasty! Definitely up to my expections of delicious, authentic, NYC standard food. The cocktails were also amazing and I love the way the menu shows which glass they come in and describes how they taste. I also accidentally ordered the wrong drink to begin with and they were extremely accommodating and switched it for the one I wanted. Excellent service like that goes a long way in my heart. I also particularly LOVED my second drink the weng-weng, really well balanced. The atmosphere is super calm, vibey, cozy and modern. I will absolutely be back!!

Yelp
This restaurant is not 'Tradicionale' by any means. My family wanted to come and enjoy a beautiful Filipino meal only to be turned away because they do not allow children who are under 1 years old. We have never been treated this away and turned away like this. My mom is so upset, they came all the way from Connecticut to come there and was left so heartbroken. If they cannot accommodate all walks of life they should not be in business.

Yelp
I am thrilled to have an upscale and exquisite Filipino restaurant in our neighborhood in Chelsea! I was a fan of Tradisyon already! Delicious and creative Filipino Spanish fusion tapas. Fantastic cocktails! Excellent and attentive service! We met co owners Joey and Carla who were amazing hosts. Loved everything we ordered and can't wait to try new items soon! Each dish is a literal mashup of the best of Filipino and Spanish cuisine. Must have are the Diniguan Tacos and their signature cocktail!

Yelp
I am 1.5 gen having both grown from Philippines and half nyc I can say this place is super great!!! Lobster Palabok ya killed it

Yelp

Yelp
I have never been turned away from a restaurant because I had a baby with me. I am very appalled and cannot believe the way we were treated today. My parents and I were so excited to come to this restaurant today, only to be turned away because I brought my 6 month old baby with me. I cant believe it and I am still shaken from the experience. Unacceptable.

Yelp
everything was phenomenal - must try the tacos, pork dishes, and greens. great vibe and great drinks
