The Best Bars and Restaurants in Saint-Henri | Eater Montreal

"Tran Cantine Vietnamienne may be the only Vietnamese restaurant in the neighbourhood — but it certainly leaves little to be desired. The pho, banh mi sandwiches, and spring rolls are always fresh and flavourful. Be sure to pick up a Vietnamese iced coffee to wash it all down." - Eater Staff

The Best Vietnamese Restaurants for Pho in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"St-Henri’s relatively young Vietnamese snack bar serves a chicken broth soup with rare beef, flank, chicken or bean curd. With a family connection to Pho Tay Ho near Beaubien metro, the place uses quality ingredients, meaning it won’t be the cheaper MSG-hit you might expect (and crave) — but it’ll still be delicious."

Google
My first visit here after hearing about it for many years. I've been shocked by the high prices but I have to admit the flavors left me a deliciously positive impression. I was recommended the chicken/shrimp spring roll and the pho. The roll was delicious and I could feel the freshness in the texture and taste. The noodles, shrimps, chicken, rice paper, sauce were amazingly on point. 10/10 :) As for the pho, meat (50/50 raw and flank) and noodles were very fresh. The broth was good but missing a tiny something special. 8.5/10 The place itself is simple and clean. Too bad there was no terrasse there. I would come back if I'm in the hood and want to splurge myself from time to time.

Google
Ordered the beef sandwich through ubereats It was a generous portion, it was really fresh and the beef was grilled to perfection. i am giving it a 4 star review because my beef had lots of fats and it was unpleasant in the mouth. I couldn't swallow it down. Had it not been for that i would have given it a 5 star Baguette was crunchy and delicious as well

Google

Update: I did address it right after it happened and I hope the young lady has learned her lesson in respecting customers and not acting in the way that she did as I am a nice person but someone else might actually assault her back. So she better start to think that just because she works or owns the place that she can do whatever she wants. Some people do not take these things lightly and as kindly as I had addressed it. My family ans I won't be returning here and will happily travel to cote de nieges for our Pho fixes even if we reside within a 200m radius and Pho fanatics. 1* after I won't be returning after being hit twice very hard with the door by the young lady working there. I loved the place but after today it really put me off. Always had good experiences there but today was just too much and being sarcastic about it was absolutely the tipping point. The stars are honest reviews of the food and place just character wise I feel the little woman should be more mindful of how she treats people, especially Inidgenous people where we've had enough abuses and discrimination. I don't return to places where I have been purposefully inappropriately hit as I am respectful and kind to everyone. I left my food and just finished the broth. It really was a really upsetting experience after losing someone tragically that you worked with, especially and wanting to have a soup in peace to help heal the mind, body and soul.

Google
We were a rather large group of 7 who came to try it for the first time. The place is very airy modern looking and clean but with limited seating. Luckily they have a big table to accommodate our party of 7. Their chicken pho broth is excellent. I didn't need to add any condiments to enhance it which is very rare. I also tried their beef vermicelli salad. Yummy with fresh ingredients. It was so large that I had to take home the leftovers. The staff is very accommodating and friendly.

Google
The best pho I have ever had & not to be missed. Their chicken, beef and pork are incredibly flavorful in both their Banh Mi’s and their bowls. They have a vegetarian option as well with their homemade tofu. The service is top-notch too. Definitely a spot to check out if you're craving some awesome Vietnamese food!

Google
One of the best viet restaurant in the St henri. Banh mi is a must. It's grilled meat and not cold cuts. Prices are more than fair and portion are pretty generous. There's a few tables to seat but most people take out. Strongly recommend.

Yelp
Extremely delicious vegan phở and vegan bánh mì. The phở comes with delicious rice noodles, an exceptionally complex umami broth, homemade tofu, bean sprouts, fresh sweet basil and lime. It will knock your socks off. The bánh mì is very well done also; the baguette is buttery, crisp and flakey, the coriander as well as the fermented carrot and radish are packed in to make room for the delectable homemade tofu. Put some chilli peppers in there is you're not joking around. Absolutely scrumptious. Tran Cantine makes their very own proprietary in-house Vietnamese style tofu. Now, this is not your tasteless supermarket tofu. Not whatsoever. This tofu is homemade using a traditional method wherein the soybean is cured and fermented into thin strips that are layered, textured, wrapped in banana leaves and pressed. Everything on the vegan menu here is amazing. Enjoy!

Yelp
I've ordered at Tran Cantine many times. We usually order the chicken vermicelli and it's always been good. However, the last time I ordered, I switched it up to beef. And the beef was inedible. It was tough, dry and hard. And the meat was all gristle. I was very disappointed. Also, the price has really gone up and the portions have shrunk. I get that costs have gone up but not to this extent. So I won't be ordering from Tran again.

Yelp
This is a great Vietnamese place in St. Henri - large portions for the vermicelli, the pho is delicious both the rare beef and chicken, and the spring rolls are hearty and the egg rolls as well. One thing is their 35% price increase in one year, which doesn't explain when inflation has been 6-7%. 30-35% is a HUGE increase and note the menus shown on Yelp are outdated. Even within one month, I noticed their pho price went from $18 to $21, and their vermicelli up to $24. This is expensive even for NYC standard where I live. Again, food and service is great, but the increasing prices are exorbitant and bold.

Yelp
An adorable canteen is found in the corner of Notre Dame street in Saint Henri; the restaurant is quiet big with few seats in the middle and few seats by the windows. I guess it's written on my forehead that I am trying this restaurant for the first time because the server figured it out. She told me for first timers, she had few recommendations. It was really thoughtful; with the server's help my sister and I got Bahn Mis, one with Grilled Chicken and one with grilled Tofu, plus Shrimp chips and imperial rolls on the side with homemade lemonade. Everything was delicious and it was under 25$ So I highly recommended Tran Cantine, for Excellent service, for succulent food and for reasonable price.

Yelp
A charming little Vietnamese fast food joint added in the St- Henri area. I went on a week night and there were a few people. I had small pho soup and a beef vermicelli salad bowl. Both were good and the portion for the salad was decent. Easily 40$ ( before taxes) for two people for fast food just to give you an idea. If you live in the area or are in the area and craving Vietnamese it is practical to go there.

Yelp
Have gotten take out from here twice. Both times packaging has been really well done. Everything you need is included. one subjection would be a piece of cardboard under the hot soups. It's hot!! Spring rolls are really good and fresh. The phos are ok. Personally I find them very salty and lacking on the vegetable side. In the broth it's pretty much just onions. Maybe it's a different style of pho I'm not used too. The noodles are good, shorter then normal (maybe they just broke) but tasty none the less. They make an in house tofu apparently. I'm a picky tofu eater and didn't like it.. it's got a weird texture for me. However my boyfriend who doesn't eat tofu said it was ok. (Translates to good haha) My friend raves about their sandwiches, saying they are some of the best in the city. Maybe next time I'll try those. The staff is always pleasant and greets you right away with a smile on their face.

Yelp
We were craving some vietnamese food on a friday night so we decided to come to Tran Cantine, after reading the good reviews. Unfortunately we were disappointed. appetizers are expensive. one spring roll 4$? wow.... this is too much. the imperial rolls were so oily and the sauce so wattery. the banh mi was good but it had only fat pieces of meat inside. and 9$ the sandwich for Montreal for a fast food place? too expensive. never coming back

Yelp
Walked into this spot on a weekday for lunch and was surprised to see so the place buzzing already! The space is simple, black chairs, black tables and a few stools for the windows seating, nice gray-washed wooden floor, add to a very modern, quaint and clean open space. The utensils are already at the table, as is your choice of condiments. You place your order at the counter, leave your name and grab a seat to get served, simple! I decided to go with the bahn mi sandwich with pork. As suggested by the friendly cashier, I added the egg. The food was up in a very reasonable timeframe considering the crowd. My first bite was heaven! Really! Perfectly cooked morsels of pork, great flavour, plenty of coriander, moist bread and that gooey egg brought that sandwich to another level! Was it worth the 10$? Yes, yes, yes!

Yelp
The joys of the Montreal food scene is when you get a 'weird' craving, you can actually easily find a spot to satisfy said craving. We are blessed with so many options and variety in our fair city. A couple of weeks ago, I got a craving for pho. Maybe it was the colder than usual weather. Maybe it was just because it had been too long since my last bowl. Either way, I wanted some pho. Luckily for me, there is actually a pho place close to my house which I hadn't tried yet so what a perfect time to head over to St-Henri and check out TRAN Cantine Vietnamienne. Cantine TRAN is located on the corner of Notre Dame and De Courcelle - just on the edge of the ridiculous food strip that is Notre Dame street in St-Henri. The place is simple in decor - other than the huge fish tank by the washrooms. The space is very bright through the lighting both artificial and natural from the large windows in front. Seating is for about 15-20 people. There is also delivery service through UberEats or takeout if you wish which it what I went for. The menu is a variety of classic Vietnamese dishes. First up, a couple of different roll options. Their spring roll of chicken, shrimp, vermicelli, mint and cilantro served with peanut sauce was very bright and fresh. A classic starter roll. The peanut sauce had a nice sweet flavour which paired well with the roll. The imperial rolls - pork, mushroom, onion, carrot and vermicelli deep-fried - were okay. Good crunch but they didn't really pop flavour wise. Being a Vietnamese shop, of course they also have Banh Mi sandwiches on the menu so I needed to try one as well. Served in a fresh baguette with pickled carrots and daikon radishes, cucumber, scallions, soy sauce, cilantro and housemate mayo, TRAN offers a choice of chicken, pork, beef or soybean curd in their sandwiches. I went with grilled chicken on this occasion and it was amazing. Probably the best Banh Mi I have had in town - excellent bread with a perfect combination of acidity, sweetness and freshness. Very very good. And finally we have the pho - the actual source of my craving. TRAN offers the option of either beef flanc, rare beef, chicken or soybean curd. It is a chicken based broth served with fresh rice noodles, onion, cilantro, scallions and fresh chilis, basil and bean sprouts on the side. This was exactly what I was looking for. Super flavourful and clean broth, nice tender noodles and an excellent portion. It is amazing that I can get such good pho so close to home. TRAN is an excellent spot for great Vietnamese food. Whether for a sandwich or some pho, I think you will be very happy with your experience. St-Henri continues to be a great food haven for the Sud-Ouest part of Montreal and I, for one, am very happy for that. Now on to the next craving ;) Cheers!

Yelp
I'm so happy that I can come on foot to get a bowl of pho that tastes the same as Pho Tay Ho out in Rosemont. I'll need to try out some of their other offerings in future visits. But given that they were able to execute well on that broth, no doubt that everything else will be delicious. The decor is very simple and easy on the eye. Maybe it's the reason for the price premium?

Yelp
Very good Vietnamese option in the area. All the dishes are made with care and the ingredients seem super fresh. For me, this is a regular stop in the area when I want fresh, tasty and a good lunch option. Now of course in other areas of the city there are some great Vietnamese food so I won't say it is the best, especially since it is slightly more expensive than most, but it doesn't take away from the quality experience. I had the chicken pho, pork rice bowl and a spring roll. The pork bowl was by far the best dish ( why did my wife want chicken pho anyway) but I was disappointed by the spring roll because for the cost it didn't seem as fresh. Now try it out. Enjoy!

Yelp
I was ready to hate this place. A Vietnamese "cantine" opening down the street from my place with no pho number, nice-ish wooden furniture, and presumably middle-class white people prices. I've changed my tune. Over the weekend I developed a class-A chest cold- one which could ONLY be helped by pho. Down the street seemed like the most logical option, despite all of my reservations. First of all, the prices are tax in, making the pho only a couple bucks more expensive than your standard mom and pop pho establishment. The banh mi's are definitely more costly than your typical vua fare but I can't speak to their quality (yet). The pho was on point- as others have described, for take out they give you a giant bowl of noodles and meat/veg, a great big container of tasty broth, and a baggy full of basil/limes/bean sprouts/sauces. For $12 it hit the spot. For the neighbourhood, I'm impressed by what TRAN has brought to the table. I'll still head to my old school pho resto when possible, but I'm happy to have these guys around. The service is also lovely. Another bonus: they've veganized the whole menu, with the exception of the pho.

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Food is amazing and staff is friendly. I didn't put 5 stars only because they have this big aquarium with a turtle and it breaks my heart to see her all by herself trapped in that tank.

Yelp
Just moved to Montreal and I have been searching for a Good broth! Finally. Best Pho this side of Montreal. This place is clean, modern and filled with light. I only had the spring rolls and the beef pho ant hey were both excellent. The pho was awesome. Ingredients where fresh with all the veggie coming together very nicely. Broth was flavorful but not overpowering. Felt very fresh. They have banh mi that looked awesome. Next time. Super friendly. GO you won't regret it!
google avatar

Yelp
This is the only bahn mi I'd pay $9 for. Seriously, it's that good. The meat is tender, the sauces are PENG and the ingredients are qua-li-té. You can tell it was made with love. I can't speak to anything else on the menu, but the PORK BAHN MI will make your day.
google avatar

Tamara H.

Yelp
Tried this place for lunch a few months ago. Their bahn-mi sandwiches are quite large and messy to eat but very flavourful. I way preferred the chicken one over the beef one because their beef was very fatty. It was my first time trying this kind of sandwich but I thought it was delicious. Their spring rolls were decent but nothing memorable. I got to try their pho from a coworker and thought it was delicious and burst with flavour. What I like is that if you get it to go, they will give you a separate container for the hot broth, and one for the veg so that nothing gets soggy. If I go back, that's what I'll try a pho bowl.
google avatar

Marc C.

Yelp
My friends and I tried it for the first time. The service was fast and very polite. The Banh Mi was good but expensive. The Beef soup wasn't really what I was expected! The pho broth was bland, tasteless and watery. The soup didn't have much meat, lots of noodles and vegetables. The Grilled chicken with vermicelli was ok. One spring roll was a little expensive ( 4.20$ for one roll). We were expecting more especially after reading all the good critics but we were disappointed with the food!
google avatar

Jason Z.

Yelp
It looks huge but the bun is just air. The beef in the beef bahn mi was good but it wasn't worth it for the price. I'd rather go to vua and spend half the money. We were still hungry and disappointed afterwards so we went and got Frida tacos

Yelp
I stayed in Saint-Henri a few years ago and was surprised to find few options for affordable, tasty food. Things on Notre-Dame have changed quite a bit since then, with the opening of Adamo, Arthur's Nosh Bar, Lupita and co. TRAN is the new kid on the block, a pho restaurant set in a clean, black & white room. The menu reflects the minimalistic space, with a handful of pho and rice choices. If you're a fan of tripe or brisket you won't be able to eat it here though, as the limited menu only offers rare beef, flank or chicken pho. I ordered the rare beef. The restaurant is affiliated with the excellent Pho Tay Ho in Rosemont, so I sort of expected the soup to be tasty. It was, however my beef was never rare or even medium rare- either it arrived fully cooked or the scorching hot broth cooked it in seconds. I knocked off another star because of the price and the fact that they use plastic cups. I'm sure most pho connaisseurs would agree- the price is a bit steep for a bowl that's very similar to what you'd get in Chinatown. You might argue that you're paying extra to eat in a clean and visually pleasing environment, but I could suggest a few places that are cheaper and still meet those criteria. Nevertheless, if you're in the area, it's not a bad place to stop by.

Yelp
Best vietnamese canteen in Montreal! Nice place to eat fresh banh mi (vietnamese sandwich) or Phõ (vietnamese soup) or vermicelli. Chef Wayne is fully dedicated in his kitchen to serve his clients.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was delicious! I had pho and it was wonderful. My wife had vermicelli with chicken and she was very happy with that.
google avatar

Stephen W.

Yelp
The best pho restaurant in the area without a doubt. Banh Mi, pho, pork shop, its all really good. The chef is very talented and the service is pleasant. Though the prices are slightly higher than other pho restaurants, it is worth it in my opinion. Better quality ingredients, and prime location make it justifiable. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the area.

Yelp
The one thing we have missed in this neighbourhood is a good solid Pho soup . This is a gem , Young crew serving up amazing Pho and other assorted dishes . Make sure to grab a lemonade ! They are amazing

Sierra L.

Yelp
Super cute restaurant in St-Henri! This area needed some delicious Vietnamese food. Staff are friendly and restaurant is very clean. Everything was packaged very well. We really liked the food and would definitely come back to try more! I got the pho which was was delicious but I definitely needed the sauces to spice it up. The peanut sauce for the spring rolls was delicious and very different than any peanut sauce typically served with them.
google avatar

Matthew R.

Yelp
I was thoroughly surprised as to how good the pho was. I had the homemade soybean curd pho and it was seriously one of the best vegetarian pho's I've had in the city. A little too expensive, but still delicious. Spring roll was well done too

Yassaman A.

Yelp
Clean, safe, healthy, and very delicious food. Thank you for staying open during these hard times!
google avatar

Jiro K.

Yelp
This place is reasonable. They offer a stripped down menu of vietnamese offerings in a design simple venue. Less hectic than your typical (popular) vietnamese joint. One could even call them a miniature apple store version of a vietnamese restaurant. The price is higher than the norm for vietnamese - but not expensive. The quality is solid. If you don't like the feel of most vietnamese places, have some concerns regarding their cleanliness (which may or may not be merited - I don't know), but like the culinary staples (e.g., beef pho, banh mi), this may be an attractive option for you. Personally, I prefer the Pho Bang NY - but this place is perfectly fine.

Monica B.

Yelp
I used to complain about the lacklustre Asian food spots in this city, but now I know my new go-to spot. We had the rare beef pho and grilled pork vermicelli. Broth was so flavourful and the vermicelli bowl has piles of meat and veggies. I'm very impressed.

Peter L.

Yelp
I've had some great Vietnamese food but this place puts the bar pretty high!!! Dropped in for lunch 2 people lovely little place has spring roll wow! peanut sauce is on point! We had Pho beef and Chicken with 2 sandwiches beef and chicken as well I added the fried egg and topped it off with some hot peppers they added on the side. We wanted to mix and match to try a bit of everything and you can't go wrong anyway. Friendly staff, really clean, also beautiful aquarium with huge turtle inside. The ambiance is great and the food is superbe.

Lupa D.

Yelp
Quite possibly the best noodle soup in town. The kitchen, toilets, and dining areas are cleaner than my house. The entire staff is friendly and welcoming, but the food is beyond comprehension. My boys love it -they never have leftovers. My daughter never eats much and the boys and I battle for her uneaten leftovers. Any trip to the Children's is disappointing without a happy treat before driving home.

Amelie B.

Yelp
I'll start by saying that I'm usually not a fan of Vietnamese cuisine but there is something about this place that really hits the spot for me. The broth is great, the chicken is tasty, their coffee is amazing. I've tried everything on the menu and I have never been disappointed. Is it a little more expensive? Sure, but the extra dollar is absolutely worth it.

Laura C.

Yelp
I was just in Vietnam a few months ago and was happy when Tran announced its opening. I've had the beef pho twice now, which is truly authentic and the broth is amazing. Today I had the ban mi pork sandwich and it was also delicious. Highly recommend!

Lou C.

Yelp
SO DISAPPOINTED! I found a huge fly in my soup and when I told them they weren't apologietic. Your customer service is GROSS.
