Traspasada Review - Noble Square - Chicago - The Infatuation

"There are some things you can never have too many of in your life -sweatpants, friends with pools, friends with boats, and saved up airline miles to name a few. You should stockpile those things like it’s your job, especially if your life goal is to attain a job that allows you to wear sweatpants. Reliable taco joints are another one to add to the mix, because there’s no such thing as too many tacos. And Traspasada is one of the taco joints you should have in your life. Located on a stretch of Ashland that has a lot of great Mexican food, Traspasada is a cash-only, small, counter-establishment. One glance at the place and you should know exactly what to expect. It has two small counter areas, about 15 stools, and there are usually two people working the grill while another mans the register. We’ve tried a whole lot of things here (like the tortas, caldo birria, and burritos) and the tacos are for sure where it’s at, particularly the chorizo and al pastor. They are two of our favorite tacos around, and since they are on the small side, we can easily down four in one sitting at a little more than $2 apiece. We’re also giving honorable mentions to the sesos, carne asada, lengua, and tilapia tacos as well. But for us, the chorizo and al pastor are the real MVP’s. The other all-star quality of Traspasada is the fact it’s open until 3:30 am Friday and Saturday, plus 1:00am every other night of the week. So come any time during the day or at night for a quick bite, but especially consider Traspasada in the early morning hours when you know a bunch of drunk tacos will really hit the spot. Food Rundown Chips and Guacamole Our biggest complaint at Traspasada is that you can only get guacamole if you get the large appetizer portion with chips for around $7.50, which kind of makes Chipotle’s guacamole policy look generous. You can still get plain avocados on a burrito or torta if you’d like, but that’s the best you can do. Chorizo Taco Give us four (or an aggressive five) with cilantro and onion and call it a day. It’s finely chopped with just enough kick. Get the green salsa involved too, which we like to heavily apply on everything. Al Pastor Taco Another favorite of ours, and a for sure order if you’re going the taco route. Tilapia Taco Going the healthy route? These grilled tilapia pieces are simply prepared and make you feel nice and fresh. Caldo Birria Meaty broth with both lean and fatty pieces of goat. It’s good stuff. Carne Asada Burrito The burritos are packed with a ton of meat, plus get the “con todo” version with onions, cilantro, cheese, avocado, beans, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. Sorry, no rice, but we don’t think it’s necessary. The heavy dose of carne asada is all you need. Chicken Torta The torta’s here aren’t bad, but we also don’t think they are that great. Unless you live or work close by and are a regular, we’d stick to the tacos or even burrito." - Sam Faye

Google
Unique Flavors, Unforgettable Meal I had a truly fantastic dining experience at Traspasada Restaurant. I was impressed by their bold and unique flavors, starting with the black salsa. It was my first time trying anything like it, and it was incredibly flavorful and unique. The real highlight, however, was the octopus tacos. Also a first for me, they were absolutely delicious—perfectly cooked and incredibly satisfying. The entire meal was a delightful surprise. I can't wait to go back and try more from their menu. Highly recommend!

Google
This place makes some delicious tacos! Definitely dine in. The black salsa is fantastic. My wife and I both got the quesabirria tacos with consomé and they were excellent. Greatly seasoned with fantastic salt levels. Definitely needs to become a regular item on the menu!

Google
This place is great for takeout, but I was able to dine in and it’s a great, fast place for GREAT FOOD. I had the Al pastor and the Barbacoa tacos, both of which were flavorful and came with sides of salsa to bump up the heat. If you dine in, these also come with chips and salsa (so good) and a small cup of soup. All of this ran me about $10 before tip (and please do!), which was excellent for the amount of food. No frills for sure, but if you want some yummy food pretty quick, this place rocks.

Good vibes only! Super sweet people :) had a good conversation and the food not only smells amazing but is also so good! Thanks mate you made our day 🙌

Google
Tacos de asada and cecina are REALLY flavorful here. Tacos al pastor are not bad either. Corn tortilla quesadilla is made on a handmade tortilla and it’s fantastic. The complimentary black salsa and the chips are THE BEST. That black salsa is really something special.

Google
Food was soo good it melted my grouchiness away!! Service was awesome, a little cup of soup and chips with a really good salsa. Didn't wait long for my food. I had a burrito with everything, meat was tender and flavorful, no gristle or fat just awesomeness, I also had a taco of chicharrón, omg so good, fresh not over cooked, spicy and flavorful. Good food. Loved it. Thank you!

What else can i ask for? First time visiting (you can expect me more often) Great service! Great food! Lady at the front counter makes you feel like home with a friendly smile:) and a fantastic attitude! I highly recommend the steak fajitas and queso fundido as an appetizer i promise you won't regret it at all! Until next time!

Google
Great neighborhood Mexican restaurant. Many authentic offerings, great value, friendly, and they give you a nice amount of toppings and salsa

Yelp
There are few foods as soothing as pozole on a wintry day, and the one at Trapasada is a must try. Hot and hearty, this savory soup instantly comforts and nourishes! I also love the salsa negra and their chips that are so fresh, crunchy, and not greasy at all. Service is also warm and friendly. It's always a calm, comfortable atmosphere, and I'll definitely be back for more from their menu.

Yelp
Great food and service! We got complimentary chips with the black sauce and chicken soup! I was thinking about getting pozole but got the 2 taco dinner instead because of the soup sample. The lomo encebollado was my favorite. I think the onion gave it more flavor. The rice that came with the dish had a nice flavor as well. We had forgotten our leftovers, and they ran out to give it to us! Very kind of them! I'll be coming back to try some of their soup options especially the pozole.

Yelp
Very yummy food! I tried the carne asada and chicken tacos and both were very flavorful and super tasty! I was visiting Chicago and my friend, who is a local, recommended we go here as it is very one of her favorite spots! So glad we did.

Yelp
I love this place. Faves are the crispy tripas tacos, poblano mole carne asada enchiladas (never annoyingly saucy... always just lightly dipped which rules), and the shrimp ceviche tostada. They don't put nasty mayo on the tostada and they pack the tostada separate from the ceviche which ensures a crispy tostada when I get home. Packed with the perfect ratio of onions, tomato, lime juice, cilantro and avocado to shrimp, it's my favorite summer meal. Ohhhh and kick ass black salsa. People will bitch about the prices but this place is worth it because the quality is consistently there. Most other places who have raised their prices similarly are just phoning it in. And the people who work there are super nice. My only complaint is that I wish there was a location up by me in Rogers Park but I also don't want them to grow too fast that they run into issues.

Yelp
I don't know how else to say it... These burritos Smack. I'm talking hulk hogan in the 90s, Will Smith/ Chris Rock is a yawn compared to the smack of these burritos.

Yelp
Ordered via Yelp for takeout and everything I ordered (5 tacos, a tamale, chips and guac, tres leches cake, and a coke) was ready in less than 10 minutes! I was super impressed. I was also impressed and excited to see they had suadero! Their menu is expansive, but suadero is something I haven't seen on a menu north of Dallas, and it's my favorite. As for the food itself, let's start with the positive: I really loved the pork tamale. It was super flavorful and the perfect texture. A little kick too! I also liked the chips and guac and the tres leches cake. The tacos were stuffed with meat so you definitely get a good deal on that, and the salsa was delicious! What I didn't *love* was the meats themselves. I liked every taco but I did have some issues. The marinated steak was just a full piece of beef so it was a little hard to eat. The lengua was amazing, but the meat was just a bit too juicy and the tortilla was falling apart. The al pastor was really good, but there was almost too much meat that it was falling all over the place. And the suadero was a great texture, but could have been a little crispier; and honestly it was too salty - when I get a taco I want the meat to have a little flavor, but be sort of bland so the salsa can elevate it, and I couldn't even taste the salsa over the saltiness. Overall, I'd still try again, but it just wasn't my *favorite* taco place I've ever had. I miss Texas...

Yelp
This is just plain bad. It's edible in the way that canned chicken (which is what their chicken tacos feature) is edible. But, I will never go back. The chorizo taco was mediocre. The ground beef taco had crunchy (?!) beef? Honestly, the best part of the meal was the Canada Dry ginger ale. Though, the service was charming, I suppose.
google avatar

Jaime R.

Yelp
Walked in for take out and ordered a chicken burrito dinner with everything, carne asada torta dinner, and guac and it was almost $50. The prices on the menu are taped over so it's hard to know the cost of each item. The service was quick and the portions were pretty good but I did not care for the chicken. It was very finely chopped and almost felt ground. The guac was good and my friend really enjoyed the torta. The menu is large so if I return, I would definitely order something else.

Yelp
Excellent taco preparations and sauces! Although it's not the closest Mexican restaurant to me, I'll be back often.

Yelp
Decent takeout Mexican fare with a few tables. Friendly counter service. I enjoyed their mole. Large menu with many types of protein including the usual beef and chicken, but also squid, tongue and beef brains. Their shrimp fajitas are not recommended. It was a decent portion but the shrimp had no flavor and appeared to be merely frozen. They do pretty good takeout business, judging from the flow of customers. Wouldn't recommend eating here on a date
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
I can only speak for the carne asada tacos or the shrimp tacos. Their carne asada taco dinner always hits the spot BUT I was not a fan of their shrimp tacos and will stick to carne asada. Based on other reviews, I would stay away from their fish and seafood. I love their horchata as I think it's not too sweet compared to other places I've had it at but a Mexican coke with their asada taco dinner has never failed me. Overall, solid taqueria with quick service and what you'd expect for a taqueria inside. They are priced a bit higher than other taquerias I've ordered at, but if you're in the area I'd order!

Yelp
I'm from LA where Mexican food reigns, so I have a good idea of what is authentic, boujee, unauthentic, and everywhere in between. Personally, very happy we stopped by this place tonight because I thought my Al Pastor burrito was pretty good. Also my friend ordered a lengua burrito and he liked it. They gave us 2 types of sauces with our burritos: a red and green sauce. They were both delicious, but I preferred the heat and spiciness of the red sauce. The girl working the front was super friendly and we had a nice conversation. The restaurant has been open for about 2 years and she told me that she had just started there. I liked her energy a lot and she asked us to take a menu for our next order here. Obviously we'll definitely be back so good call on her part!
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Get a burrito here. It's worth the bus ride or walk. I enjoyed the carne asada and friend always gets the pastor. It's authentic and fresh. Really happy to have eaten here.

Yelp
Wow, what a find! I'm super loyal to Garcias but sometimes I can't make it out all the way to Lincoln square. I was randomly scrolling through my delivery options a few days ago, unable to make a decision on even what kind of cuisine to choose let alone the actual restaurant to order from. These guys had top ratings so I ordered a taco salad and a tostada. Honestly, this was the tastiest delivery food I've had in a while! Everything was fresh, the taco salad shell was not soggy, portions are generous and well packaged. I will definitely be ordering from here again. Can't wait to try some other menu items!
google avatar

Carlos G.

Yelp
Everything is good, large menu, all authentic, cost is reasonable. great hours.

Yelp
We got Nachos, Mexican beef dinner and beef tacos. One of the best tacos we ever had, highly recommend!
google avatar

Rebecca B.

Yelp
Ordered the veggie fajitas and they were quite unique and tasty. They include potatoes that are cut potato chip thin and sautéed. Very unique food. Loved them! The side of black salsa was a nice little treat. My order was ready when I arrived and the restaurant was clean, cute, and cozy.

Beth P.

Yelp
I popped in to see if they were serving Birria tacos, but unfortunately they didn't have them that day! I decided to order the Caldo de Res instead, as a takeaway and was not disappointed! The broth was flavorful, chock full of veggies and meat. It was served cilantro/onion, limes, corn tortillas and salsa and the serving was enough for two meals. I will definitely be back for more! Hopefully I'll get those Birria tacos soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Traspasada, fix your hours of operation on Yelp and Google! It says you're only open until 2 PM. I know that you mean 2 AM but you're likely losing business to this small mistake. Hands down, best Al Pastor and Bistek taco in town. Really great corn in a cup as well. You won't be disappointed.

Victoire S.

Yelp
Your standard taqueria. Hits the spot for sure. Love their steak tacos & guacamole!!!
google avatar

Meghan M.

Yelp
Delicious tamales and flautas. Full of flavor. Tamales were moist and flautas had the perfect crunch. I will be coming back!
google avatar

Adam A.

Yelp
We biked here over the summer to pick up some Mexican and take it to the Lake for a sunset. The place is definitely more of a take out spot, so it worked out. Coming from California, I have been looking for a taco that compares to back home. While the tacos here are good, they don't quite live up to some of my favorite tacos in CA. With that said, we did get 2 outstanding dishes. The ceviche and the tres leches are must orders in my opinion. I will definitely be coming back for more. Also, the salsas were strong. I would definitely recommend this place, but I'm still on the search for that 10/10 taco.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Really happy I found this place! We ordered out at the start of the pandemic from here cause we wanted to support a local spot. Even with zero seating, this place was incredibly busy! There was a line out the door when we were leaving with our called in order. Would highly recommend calling in for your order so you don't end up waiting in line. If you like horchata, this place makes amazing horchata. I'm very picky about horchata cause sometimes it could be too sweet or syrupy. There was the perfect balance of spice and sweet. I don't think i have to say this, but to complete my review... the tacos were amazing and I would recommend their salsa negra! So fun! We ordered the 3 taco dinner plate. Barbacoa is my choice for taco filling, but I was tempted to try their carne asada. Def give them a try if you're nearby! Support local!
google avatar

Yelp
Great Mexican food! I'm a little stingy with my stars for my Mexican food so I don't often give out 5 stars. I ordered the 2 taco carne asada plate which included beans, rice and a little salad. My wife got beef flautas and my daughter got a flour tortilla quesadilla. The tacos had a very generous amount of meat. It was two tacos with enough meat easily for three tacos. They came topped with cilantro and onion. The rice was great and well seasoned. The beans were good. They were perfect as a side but they were not at the level where I'd want a bean burrito. The flautas were good. Super crispy and topped with all the good stuff: tomato, lettuce, cotija cheese, mozzarella and sour cream. They used carne asada meat which I haven't seen before in flautas but it was good. We also got tamarindo (agua fresca) and it was really good. It was light and refreshing. Not too sweet. I would definitely order it again. The only thing I would not recommend is the tres leches cake. It was not fresh. I considered lowering the stars but at the end of the day, I'd come back for the food but skip dessert.
google avatar

Brad L.

Yelp
Unassuming and excellent Mexican cuisine, only did 3 tacos and GUACAMOLE , and 3 of 4 items were superb. The one that wasn't , the fish taco, was still ok, but the Ground Beef and Lengua(tongue) were both succulent and generous, and their house made salsas awesome, as was the fresh guac. I will be back. Edit..ordered delivery last night and to my delight the chicken soup rivals that made by my Bubby!!!
google avatar

Lauren-Ashley B.

Yelp
This is an authentic Mexican restaurant. Their steak tacos are amazing and they are packed full of meat. The elote is soooo good. Nice service, quick, hot and fresh... just how I like it
google avatar

Neil M.

Yelp
Chorizo a tad salty but otherwise good food. Especially good spot to hit in between bar headed home !
google avatar

Greg T.

Yelp
Great Mexican food, freshly made and love the black salsa! Great selections of tacos. I'm putting this place on my list of regular spots.
google avatar

Matthew R.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Mexican places in all of Chicago! Not only are their burritos and tacos great for a quick lunch, their dinners are great too. The enchiladas, chicken wing & dorado dinner, and chicken soup are some of my favorites. Really, you can't go wrong. So lucky to have them in Lakeview!
google avatar

Elizabeth T.

Yelp
The food was good. The salsas are the bomb, really good. Very hot though. I would come back. Only thing is it's a bit pricey.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a sleeper pick for some of the best carne asada tacos in the city. Typically I judge a place by their al pastor, and Traspasada's is pretty good (it's not my favorite for their tacos, but it really shines in sopes, gorditas, etc.; it gives a really nice contrast to their beans and cheese), but their carne asada is fantastic and justifies a trip all on its own. Traspasada is apparently known for their black sauce (which is what initially brought me in, because I'm a salsa fanatic), and I'd say for good reason. Here's the thing: There are plenty of salsas that justify their existences by bringing flavor along with the heat, but it's extremely refreshing (and awesome for my acid reflux) when you can also find a go-to sauce that gives you loads of flavor WITHOUT setting your mouth on fire. Their salsa negra does this. It's smoky, almost sweet (I believe the peppers are fire-roasted), and while there's a slight twinge of spice, the flavor is the point here. They've got your standard green and red salsas as well (both have a fair amount of heat), but if you want something on the mild side, you can't go wrong with the black, and I'd argue that it's also easily their tastiest salsa (add in some red if you want more kick). The staff is friendly, the food comes out quickly, and everything I've had there, I've thoroughly enjoyed. Two thumbs and a piña Jarrito up!

Yelp
Best of the best !!!! Always a pleasure coming to Taqueria Traspasada . I drive all the way from Schaumburg to this place since it's worth the drive! From the chips and salsa to the steak tacos OMG !!!! It's heaven of great flavor every time I eat there . What I love is the service and consistency of great cooking
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
Wow, this place is the shit. Authentic, flavorful Mexican food. I am vegetarian and they have so many options. Their black salsa is out of this world. (The red salsa is very hot- beware.) Their green salsa is amazing! I usually get the different veggie tacos and they all taste so amazing. 100% would recommend.

Alex H.

Yelp
The food they have is the best Mexican Food place in town. It's the REAL food ... (better tortillas, bigger portions,) And food comes out fast. It has a large dining area too. There's another location on N California Ave. I Tried the burrito at this one it was great! Definitely comping back!!Carne Asada TacoSteak Burrito

Garrett Y.

Yelp
We got carne asada tacos, gordita, a chicharron en salsa verde taco, elote, agua fresca jamaica + pine, and steak enchiladas. All great. Free soup and nice salsas. :) yum! cute restaurant.
google avatar

Luci C.

Yelp
Everything we had was good el pastor tacos, steak Burrito (fire) and the ribs were amazing!!!
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
My husband and I ordered 4 tacos and chips/ guac. We got the chorizo con huevo, barbacoa, pastor and grilled tilapia. The tacos were all delicious - simple but meat was very flavorful and there was a lot for a single taco. Also really liked their complementary black sauce as well the two other ones that came in bottles. We will definitely be coming here more frequently as the meal was cheap for the amount of food we got and they are open late!

Nick G.

Yelp
Great little Taqueria, closest really good tacos to wrigley IMO. Carne asada was really good!

Angel S.

Yelp
Good food and great service. Food tastes very authentic and fresh. I really recommend this place.

Paris W.

Yelp
First time here and won't be the last. Food was delicious; I ordered the 3 taco dinner and the black sauce was thee best. Very friendly staff as well

Kevin K.

Yelp
Best Mexican restaurant on the northside. Very authentic and delicious! Get the steak burrito with onion, cilantro, and fresh jalapeños.
google avatar

Trekforbeer B.

Yelp
3.5 both doesn't wow me enough to jump to a 4. Solid traditional authentic tacos, but nothing that stand out. I do like the tiny chopped onion that comes on each taco, my kid didn't even notice, which he normally would. I like the fried chicken taco, chicharon was a train wreck never order. Solid beef and chorizo. But if I wanted tacos I'd rather have slightly more upscale and just up Chingon.
google avatar

richard a.

Yelp
My favorite steak tacos! They have real spicy salsas to add if you like to your tacos! It may be a small joint inside but the tacos are not small! Love this place!
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Finally some authentic tacos with tortillas de milagro! It's all about the tortillas for me. Not only was the steak juicy but it had an amazing charcoal taste. The pastor was AMAZING! And if I'm being honest that's one of the harder proteins to pull off. The barbacoa could use a little more salt to my liking but the red salsa definitely gave it that kick it needed! Highly recommend!

Alexandra C.

Yelp
They are hiding real prices. In the menu Tampiquena $23 dollars. Surprise at the end $29 dollars. They never mentioned us at the beginning when we placed our order. Besides the dish was not good. I will never get back there.
google avatar

Alberto V.

Yelp
Amazing birria tacos! I haven't had birria tacos in a while, and me being from the south side of Chicago, I'm skeptical when Mexican restaurants on the north side (NW side excluded) claim authenticity. But omg these were sooooo good! The woman attending was great and I love the Chavo Del Ocho paintings on the table. And it was only a short walk from me. I'll def be returning!

Michael A.

Yelp
The best tacos I've ever had. PERIOD. This is a legit review. I've been all over the country and had tacos everywhere. These ribeye tacos are so far beyond any other it's absurd... and it makes no sense. Also, if you're looking for more, and a bit different, try their al pastor burrito and add avocado. Best lunch burrito you can get. Make sure to get a ton of their extremely flavorful green salsa on the side. I dream of this stuff.
google avatar

Jim M.

Yelp
Have eaten here a bunch of time and food is always great. Best salsa in town.! Today we ordered pick up due to C19. My wife good catholic that she is got fish tacos for lent. Very generous portion and absolutely delicious. Since I am going to hell, I ordered the skirt steak which was super tasty. Quesa Fundido and Guacamole appetizers made for a great meal. Everything tasted like we were in the restaurant. Whether you eat there or at home you will have a great meal. Support your local restaurants!
google avatar

Sara K.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. It has the best salsa i've ever had. It's small and we usually do takeout, but have dined in before. They have a large menu to cater to pretty much anything you could be craving. We love the tacos and fajitas, but the burritos are also amazing. Give this place a try, you won't be sorry!
