The Anti-Blackness of Bay Area Fine Dining Kitchens Is Still a Problem | Eater SF

"At SPQR I was repeatedly labeled as 'having an attitude' and told to 'fix my mood' because it supposedly affected other staff; when I spoke up after being wrongly accused of not completing a task I was dismissed with 'I don't need the attitude,' a white chef asked why I was 'always angry' and said I 'didn't have it that bad,' another claimed Africans do not have running tap water, I was asked to use my 'real name' despite going by 'Sam,' and I endured colleagues playing hip-hop laced with the N-word and greeting me with 'What up, playa?' — all of which made being the only Black person in the kitchen isolating and uncomfortable." - Selasie Dotse

Google
Though serving popular appetizers, we were delighted to find that they also had some authentic appys like white anchovies with mozzarella and stuffed zucchini flowers. We ordered bread, which came with an olive tapenade-so good! And the Lobster Ravioli which was delish!!! The meal ended with the best cappuccino and espresso you could ask for. And the service was excellent! Highly recommended! Grazie mille.

Just moved to Culver City area and was looking for pizza and never knew a about this Italian restaurant. Food is very authentic and delicious. Pizza was thin crust and sauces taste homemade. The inside looks very warm and welcoming. Next time I will definitely get a table outside. Get some wine and unwind at this awesome place.

Google
I'm not one to write reviews... but this place deserves it. Best Italian spot in LA. My girlfriend and I came here unexpectedly on a late night during vacation and both agreed it was the best meal we had our entire trip. We even came back again right before we had to fly out of LAX. Both times the food and service were beyond excellent. The chef comes out to talk to you and help you order. Very personal and delightful experience. The prices are so great, we didn't feel like we were overpaying for the first time in California.... If you are thinking of checking this place out, don't hesitate. 5 STARS!

Google
Came to Trattoria Bella Roma with a large group. Staff were accommodating and friendly, and our meals came out quickly. Unfortunately, my steak was burnt and did not taste as advertised. Portions were large and desserts were sweet but not overly. An above average experience.

Google
The cannoli here are absolutely delicious, with a crispy shell and creamy filling. They also make fantastic Italian cookies that aren’t overly sweet. The shop smells amazing the moment you walk in. The owners are warm and welcoming, often offering samples. It’s worth stopping by if you have a sweet tooth

Google
First time visiting LA and we just stumbled to Trattoria Bella Roma just by chance. We are italians, and let me tell you, we don’t joke with food. The experience, service and food quality was great, Roberto was looking after us and made us feels right at home. Absolutely didn’t feel like US at all. Thank you Roberto and team, highly recommended!

Google
Fantastic food and great service. We were there on a very busy night. Including someone's 90th birthday. The packed restaurant didn't seams to influence the food or service. We tried the unlimited bread. We asked for vinegar and oil which they brought. Bread was very good. Was being baked and cut near by our table so it was impossible not to order. Would recommend. Prices seamed extremely reasonable, plates sizes are a little smaller than at some restaurants, however seamed like the right size so you finished full, but no left overs to take home. I liked the idea pay less for smaller meals. Lobster ravioli was amazing. As well as the Alfredo fettuccine. Good dessert options. We tried both the lava cake and vanilla cheese cake. Both were top level. Wanted to try the spaghetti ice cream but will have to be for next time. Had good prices on wine and wine bottles for restaurants. They do let you bring you own for a fee. This has currently moved to the top of our list for Italian food in the Beverly Hills area and we will be back.

Google
I found this lovely restaurant taking side streets on my commute home and initially noticed the French restaurant right nextdoor, but when it came down to trying it out, went first to the Trattoria and have not stopped returning. First of all the food is excellent, as is the service. The lovely gentleman (I presume the owner), from Rome has been incredibly welcoming each time we have returned. The biggest challenge for me is to decide what to try next. I have now tried apps, soups, main courses, pastas, and most of the desserts. There is nothing bad and no choice that will steer you wrong. I like lasagna generally, not love - like, but I've had it here twice. It's amazing. I've had the veal Marsala...amazing. Boscaiola (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) and it was gorgeous. And the best part, beyond the fresh bread and olive spread that continually comes to the table.... The price is right. It's the only restaurant in Los Angeles where I can have apps, drinks, a main, and dessert without feeling like I am going broke and leaving disappointed. In fact I consistently walk away feeling the opposite - full, happy, and like I got a fantastic deal. This may be the best kept secret in LA.

Yelp
Love this spot! The gnocchi are really good here, you can bring your own wine bottle as well! The servers here are very friendly! I will definitely be back!!!

Yelp
This place was on my list to try for a while and I was happy to finally try it. Came on a Friday night during peak dinner time. There was no wait but all the seats on the patio were taken so we sat inside. Both inside and outside are nice but I think if I could have picked I would have done outside because the ambiance was so cute. Once seated they immediately asked if we wanted bread. We said yes and knew they charged about $5 for it but on the plus side it's endless. For meals, I got the Gnocchi Alla Vodka and my husband got the Carbonara. I ordered the Gnocchi based on the other reviews here which all said to go with the Gnocchi. They were not wrong at all - the Gnocchi was soft, pillowy, and practically melted in your mouth. Definitely order it! The Carbonara on the other end was way too salty and my husband likes a lot of salt on his dishes. Portions were really big for the price and we'd come back but probably split a Gnocchi and appetizer between us.

Yelp
Excellent food, wonderful service, reasonable prices! This place is a real neighborhood gem. Go!

Yelp
We've been wanting to try this restaurant as it's in the neighborhood! We loved it! It's rare to find an Italian spot like this nowadays as the majority are trendy and influencer ridden, not to say they aren't good restaurants but the ambiance here is way different in a great way. It was so cozy, calm and felt like an Italian restaurant not in LA in the best way possible. The food was authentic and lots of amazing choices that you wouldn't find anywhere else. Also the price point is incredible for the portion sizes. Very happy and excited to come back. You can tell this place is full of love when the owner is there working hard.

Yelp
Pomodoro & Basilico was simple but delicious! Generous portion as well for the price. The outer coating of the arancini wasn't my favorite but had plenty of filling oozing with cheese

Yelp
Very authentic, great prices, great staff. A South Robertson iconic location that all locals must try.

Yelp
Really tasty, fun and very reasonably priced local trattoria. Pastas are terrific. Truly feels like a "neighborhood" place.

Yelp
We were visiting LA and craved a real Italian meal and we found it. We arrived at around 8p on a Thursday. The place was in a neighborhood that seemed a little gritty. The parking lot was empty as was the restaurant. We wondered if we were at the right spot or if Yelp had led us astray. Something told me to stay the course and give it a try. So glad we did. This is a REAL neighborhood spot. The owner/chef with a real Italian accent was warm and friendly. The waitress was casually singing along to the 80s/90s music playing in the background. She was happy and that made us happy. The food? Solid! Fruitti Di Mare & Lasagne. Preceded by fresh bread with olive oil and tapenade and a Caesar salad. Topped it off with the special of the day carrot cake. I over ate... again! While we were there the place started to fill up with couples and families that the staff greeted as if they were all regulars. My kinda place. Not sure when I'll be back in that area but already wishing I could try more dishes AND DESSERTS!

Jake G.

Yelp
Have been going here for the past 20 years and I cannot wait for the next 20! Always incredible service and ambiance (and of course the prices!). Absolutely delicious items are the gnocchi with any sauce and Roman pizza. Can't say enough positive things about the owner and his wife. Come here if you want real Italian!
google avatar

Jackie N.

Yelp
Pizza was so good, fettuccine was amazing. And the service was outstanding. I'd drive from OC to LA just for this food. It's that's good.
google avatar

Mr. Orange ..

Yelp
What else needs to be said. The kitchen needs to be a nightmare for a restaurant to get a C. We recently went and the service was equally terrible. The waiter, is the manager is the bus boy, is the chef .... It's one of those places.

Yelp
Roberto the owner called me regarding my email to him that I was unhappy with Chicken Parm I wrote about below. He was very nice and apologetic about what happened. I really appreciated that he responsibly reached out to me! He told me that he did not prepare the Chicken Parm that I bought last Thursday and was unable to check it before it went out the door. He offered to personally make me another one this weekend and make sure it was right. I picked up the chicken parm Saturday evening and ate it right away with my significant other. Definite improvement over Thursday night. The chicken and cheese were much much better. The sauce was the same. It's low salt. We both liked it a lot--it was fine. The Spinach, potatos, and carrots also improved over Thursday--Excellent--this we could eat every night! He included a side of pasta/red sauce--very good. But we both agreed that when we return to the restaurant we would order something else--they may be using traditional Italian homemade sauce and prep, but we yearn for a more zesty robust sauce in the chicken parm, a crusty coating, and a thicker chicken patty--that may be the more Americanized version? In closing, Roberto was willing to go out of his way to make things right and deserves your business.

Yelp
We love going here because you feel like you are being transported back to Italy. There are always interesting specials if you do t just go with your tried and true favorites like cinghiale which they offer in the fall. Looking forward to our next celebration there!
google avatar

Yelp
Staff was welcoming and friendly. Portions of food were spot on. Lasagna was too salty for my liking. There was no problem finding parking.
google avatar

Wiebke H.

Yelp
Really disappointed in how my wife was treated by a staff member. She has a handicap, with a placard. There were 12 empty parking spots available, and yes we were going to the restaurant right next door, and I get there are rules - but come on. 12 empty spots and my disabled wife can't park there? We will never eat here now.
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
Roberto, the owner is such a great guy! The food is always excellent and the Italian hospitality is always there. If you are a fan of homemade tagliatelle, they make it right here. Also, their Cannoli is the best around.
google avatar

Ron L.

Yelp
Post Christmas time, but they still had a wonderful Christmas village as you walked in to the front counter. I rambled over a block from my joint to pick up gluten-free eggplant Parmesan and gluten-free pasta. The restaurant has a long back dining area and an outdoor rectangular patio that is enclosed. The ambience is pure Roma all the way, which adds to the delicious food that they serve. I appreciate that they make eggplant Parmesan without the unnecessary breading that would normally prevent me from appreciating this wonderful dish. Well done Bella Roma.

Robin L.

Yelp
Big menu, really great prices and we loved our meal. I had heard of this place from many people and I was so glad I tried it. Grilled jumbo shrimp delish. My friend had the pasta bolognese and she really liked it.

Daniel T.

Yelp
Incredible local Italian run by a lovely family. Worth the visit every time. Everything amazing but if it's your first time try the Rigatoni al Horno. Warms the soul.
google avatar

Ruby M.

Yelp
My friend was feeling like having an Italian night so I was quick to find this place. We were quickly seated and every staff member was so polite and helpful. I ordered the bolognese tagliatelle and of course I had to pair it with a glass of Cabernet. First off if you're looking for a good Italian place with a fair price point and good food, this is the spot! I could not believe my eyes when looking at the menu, and with how inflation is currently, the price points were perfect. My tagliatelle bolognese was amazing, and lastly to end the night we ordered the spaghetti icecream with strawberry syrup on top was so delicious it looked like actual spaghetti!! Overall I loved my experience here and now they got a loyal customer here.

Yelp
Wonderful food. Soothing ambiance. Friendly staff. Just the kind of neighborhood restaurant I love, with the owner on hand to make sure everything is right!!
google avatar

Yelp
Every time I am in LA I eat here. The food is amazing... if you like Italian food this is the place for you and don't forget to try the soups !!

Peter D.

Yelp
A reliable neighborhood gem. Comfort food, Italian style. Friendly... and an very good value for the money. Families welcome... but still has separate, more couple oriented tables. Little touches, like olive tanpenad, add a smile to the meal.

Yelp
We had just flown into Los Angeles from our stay in Las Vegas when my brother's-in-law neighborhood experienced a blackout due to a fallen tree. The tree knocked out all power for several hours, so my brother-in-law suggested eating affordable Italian cuisine since we had spent the weekend eating at gourmet restaurants. We piled into his car and drove a little better than 20 minutes to Trattoria Bella Roma in a tiny strip mall. This restaurant shares a parking lot with a couple of other businesses and features outdoor dining (which I think was created during COVID-19 restrictions). However, the evening was relatively cool to us thin-blooded Hawaiian-borns, so we dined d indoors. It was apparent that my brothers-in-law had visited this restaurant many times since the restaurant owner, Roberto, and the female server greeted them with genuine familiarity and sincerity. We were seated in the back corner next to the front window facing South Robertson Boulevard, where we could watch the comings and goings of other patrons. The corner table kept us away from the heat of the pizza oven and the constant flow of patrons picking up their takeout orders. Our server brought us menus and glasses of iced water. Roberto came by to expound on the daily specials and recommendations while we had a chance to go through their fairly extensive menu. He also brought us a loaf of fresh and hot Italian bread and a ramekin filled with black olive tapenade, and bottles of olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar to snack on. We placed our meal orders by starting with the Original Roman Potato Pizza, followed by individual servings of plates of pasta. -Pizza con patate: the thin and crisp crust was an excellent vehicle for this white (mozzarella-based) sauceless pizza. Its near-paper thin potato slices were still crunchy from baking, and the rosemary, garlic, and parsley seasoning enlivened the potato slices. We shared this pizza that was cut into eight wedges. I got full after eating the two wedges and wondered if I could even eat my entrée. I think that it was a good idea to share that pie. $12.50 -Pappardelle Roma Ragù: the pappardelle was cooked al dente, and its thick and rich Italian sausage ragù was comforting. I liked the thick consistency of the ragù and its tomato-rich base, which was balanced with the inclusion of other minced vegetables or soffritto. I barely could eat a quarter of the huge and tasty pasta when I had to declare, "sono pieno come un uovo!" $16.95 -Spaghetti alle Vongole: my husband ordered this dish, and it too was a generous serving of pasta. He was pleased with the briny broth of white wine, olive oil, and garlic since it wasn't thick or creamy Alfredo-like. He did, however, ask the server for freshly grated Parmesan cheese, which the server made no judgment about. $16.95 My brothers-in-law ordered the Spaghetti alla Carbonara for $15.95, and Bucatini 'Amatriciana for $16.95 since those pastas are their favorites here. We were glad that they thought of bringing us to this affordable and delicious trattoria during the power outage, and we wouldn't mind returning. Our only knock is their wine selections which weren't to our palate consideration, but, hey, it's a casual family-style trattoria with many repeat customers. We hope to return soon but we're running out of time during our current vacation.

Yelp
Great food, service, atmosphere and reliable for years. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

Yelp
Went to pick up some dry cleaning and stumbled upon this gem next door to the cleaners. What draw me in was the aroma of fresh Italian food and a quaint outdoor space that had seating reminiscent of Italy I was warmly greeted at the entrance and seated immediately. It seemed like everyone had smiles on and it was a welcoming feel. I ordered the lobster ravioli, mushroom soup, and mushroom pepperoni pizza. The soup came out first and it was delicious and tasted amazing. The lobster was even better and it was rich and creamy. Overall, this place is wonderful with good service and amazing food. If you're craving Italian Food, this place is a must .

Candy C.

Yelp
We were seated as soon as we got there. The ambience was quiet and romantic . I felt like the service was rushed, not once did they ask us if we needed anything. We had to get up just to get someone's attention. Unfortunately the pasta was dry and too salty. I'm afraid to say it's not worth coming back.

Yelp
Wonderful authentic Roman Italian dishes! Great lasagna, chicken parmigiana and so much more.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
Provender: this is a fantastic Italian restaurant near Mid City. I tried the tagliatelle bolognese and the vongole and both were well prepared. This is an excellent place to grab some Italian food with a mom-and-pop feel. Prices: very reasonable, most dishes will be under $20. Parking: there's a parking lot and street parking. People: fun for all. Great place for date night. Perks: they also serve other fares besides pasta, like pizza and sandwiches. Pro tip: in addition to the main lot, they have a small parking lot on Cashio St. Enter through the alley.
google avatar

Yelp
This is a local gem. We love coming here. The food is delicious, the service is always amazing and we love supporting local businesses in our neighborhood.
google avatar

Brooke M.

Yelp
Come here and support family owned businesses! This was my first time at this quaint family owned business which the owner Roberto clearly takes pride in. I need to come by another time where I can order some pasta. My friends were very healthy so they accommodated them with their strict dietary restrictions which was very appreciated. I definitely will come back here for some authentic Italian.
google avatar

Kayla V.

Yelp
The pumpkin raviolis are out of this world! Caprese salad is pretty standard and very yummy. Also ordered the pesto pasta with penne which was very satisfying. #carbediem I ordered to go but picked up in house. Very cute little Italian mom and pop restaurant with free lot parking in front on site!

Yelp
Ate here once a few years ago and remembered how great the food was. Just so happened to be driving on Robertson's Blvd and came across Bella Roma again! My husband manifested at least one night of pasta dinner and he got it. Walked in and easily got seated indoor with a huge table. It was pretty festive that night because a large party across from us and another table behind were celebrating a birthday. Food was prepared made to order and you can tell the pasta is homemade and super fresh. Servers were on top of their game, prompt and reliable. Plenty of parking in front or street side. Side note, you can learn how to sing happy birthday in Italian while using the urinal!! LOL!!

Tammy S.

Yelp
Best Italian restaurant on the west side Delicious food, staff is so friendly. Everything is delicious. I've coming for years and I'm always blown away every time I try something new. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Service- fantastic!! So attentive and kind. Roberto is a doll! Picked out the wine for us, the whole staff was great. Ambiance- sat outside and it was sprinkling rain-- the patio is covered and cozy-- SO CUTE. Food- 100% Absolutely delish. Pizza is yummy thin crust-- could have been a little hotter but was incredible either way. Both pastas were delish. Huge menu, great wine and you can't beat the price!! Adorable and yummy.

Yelp
Ambiance: family style Italian restaurant, specializing in homemade pasta and pizza plus desserts, street parking in the neighborhood Service: very friendly and attentive, adequately refilled water though it took a while to place the order, the food was served fairly well afterwards Food: numerous items on the menu, daily special and homemade items Bread - **** freshly made bread served with tapenade, the smashed olives were so delicious, recommend Caesar - **** Romaine, croutons, parmigiana, mixed with creamy caesar dressing, simple and fresh, recommend Calamari Fritti - **** crispy, fried, fresh calamari with spicy tomato marinara, the calamari itself was just fine, the spicy sauce was amazing, recommend Tagliatelle Bolognese - **** 100% angus beef with proprietary blend of seasonings and tomato sauce that's slow simmered for over 3 hours, the pasta was a bit sticking together, which could have been improved, the meat sauce was so flavorful, recommend Tiramisu - ***** light and airy, this layered specialty of lady fingers, mascarpone cream, espresso and chocolate is a dream cloud of goodness, soft and sponge texture, melting in mouth, one of the best in town, highly recommend Price: generous portions and affordable prices, about $25~$30 per person for a very fulfilling meal

Yelp
Great Food, great staff, great owners, been taking care of my grandparents for years!! Knowing our names is just the cherry on top!!

Yelp
Such great food and kind Owner! I live just around the corner from this restaurant and couldn't be happier about that. From their delicious penne à la vodka to their amazing service, Bella Roma is one of my favorite places to eat. Their outdoor patio is me and my family's favorite place to dine on the weekends. Thank you so much Bella Roma!!!!

Yelp
Writing another update. Again. This places customer service just keeps on getting worse. Came in the other night for dinner. Took forever and my plate wasn't even freshly hot. The waiters need to improve. Still. It's sad how a place enjoy eating at really makes me not want to continue coming.
google avatar

Peter S.

Yelp
The food was good. The Caesar Salad was incredible as was the Salmon and the Ravioli. I was a little disappointed in the mushroom and truffle Rissoto. The Tiramisu was also tremendous. Maybe the best I've had. Service was very friendly and attentive. Ambiance: We were able to talk easily and hear each other. Prices were quite reasonable.
google avatar

Tish K.

Yelp
We celebrated my husband and a close friend's birthdays on Friday. Roberto and his staff( Frankie & Nicky) were the best. We were a party of 8 plus 2 infants. They couldn't have been more attentive. Each dish was so scrumptious. It made our celebration even more special! Thank you Roberto ! You outdid yourself once again. Will be back to celebrate even more special occasions!
google avatar

Shani S.

Yelp
Service was great. The kids loved the Bolognese and the American Alfredo. The Al Forno and eggplant parmigiana were ok. I've had better ones but overall good experience!
google avatar

Anam S.

Yelp
Came here with two friends and we had a delightful time. We wanted a low key pasta night and this place was lovely and welcoming. Great service- not too pushy, so if you like being left with a respectable distance as you sip your wine and actually enjoy the company you are with, you will enjoy this. The menu is vast without being overwhelming, and some of the pasta is even made in house. We loved our orders- penne a la vodka, spaghetti olio e pepperoncimo, and chicken Parm plus a salad and app. We will return surely again! It feels like a little best kept secret- not scene or hipster so the environment is chill, quiet, and you can actually share a conversation with your companions. Just comfortable, not in your face, and lots on the menu! Plus the pricing seemed very nice, especially in this economy & especially for the wine!

Natalie N.

Yelp
This is a gem! Tucked away in a small strip mall it reminds me of the old time Italian restaurant of years ago. The service was terrific and it has quite an extensive menu.We ordered calamari, salad, arancini, bucatini,Alfredo & cioppino. All were delicious! The prices are very reasonable and I will definitely make it a point to visit again.

E Q.

Yelp
Real service and quality, delicious Italian food for affordable prices. I can't even find this trifecta anywhere else in LA anymore. Great experience every single time I dine here. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I think you'll be happy you chose to come here. I know that I've sat at quite a few other restaurant tables nearby and wished I just came here. So you gather I like the atmosphere. It just feels like Los Angeles. ... At least West LA. Let me also tell you that ni matter what you order off the admittedly old school menu, it is sure to satisfy.
google avatar

Ian E.

Yelp
Best Lobster Bisque I've ever had - no exaggeration. Great service with great tasting food. I'll be back!

James F.

Yelp
Delicious as ever - love the lamb and the alla vodka washed down with a Camul red. Tiramisu for afters and an expresso.

Yelp
We arrived upon opening and were greeted by a friendly host. We opted for a table inside. There are many tables outside and the indoor dining room is large. This is the real deal Italiano. The menu has so many options as well as gluten free pasta. Our table was given fresh baked bread and olive tapenade to start. The tapenade had a wonderful texture, I wish there was gluten free bread. The three of us split a Caesar salad (croutons on the side). The dressing was light and the shaved parmesan topper was a nice touch. I had the (gluten-free) spaghetti carbonara. The noodles were perfectly cooked. The sauce was mild in flavor, the pancetta was deliciously fatty, the fresh ground peppercorn gave the dish a flavor punch. The rest of my party had the penne arrabbiata and loved the spicy sauce. We will definitely be back!
