This lovely little spot on Washington has the best Neapolitan style pizza in metro Detroit. Probably all of Michigan. I crave the Pizza Margherita here; I get the taste for it, and nothing else will do. Everything I've ever had here has been delicious, the polenta, eggplant caponata, the gnocchi, or the specials, but it's the Pizza Margherita that invades my thoughts.
In a town where doughy, deep-dish pizza is the standard, it's hard enough to find a decent New York-style slice, let alone the subtle char of a Neapolitan pizza. The Pizza Margherita is nothing without the delicate balance of crispness to chew on the crust. With so few ingredients, they all must shine brightly, and equally. The perfect amount of tomato sauce to mozzarella to basil; it's hard to get them just right. I order Pizza Margherita every place I've ever seen it on a menu, and the pizza at Da Luigi's is right at the top of the list. It's done the right way, and it's a deceptively tall order. And the desserts are amazing. You'll be stuffed, but save some room for the Limoncello cake or the tiramisu; they're so good.
The mood and decor of the restaurant is quite romantic, with a nice wine selection. The servers are pleasant and efficient, and the owner is always there making sure things run smoothly. The trattoria, is sadly becoming kind of an anachronism, at least around here, as gentrification creeps and twists its vines across Metro Detroit, bearing the fruit of endless shared plates and $16 craft cocktails, as hipster joints abound. If you are looking for a quiet, cozy spot for a date night, with delicious food and without an ounce of pretension, then this is your place.
