The 38 Best Restaurants in Rome, Italy | Eater

"The Camerucci family’s well-loved trattoria is not actually in Monti, but rather the adjacent multicultural Esquilino district near Stazione Termini. The cuisine is heavily Marchigiano — from the Italian region of Le Marche — so expect lots of game like braised rabbit and roasted duck, meat-filled fried olives, and fresh pasta like the legendary raviolo filled with a runny egg yolk and dressed with butter and sage. Must-try dish: The runny-yolk raviolo is not to be missed." - Katie Parla

Google
Absolutely fantastic dinner in Rome. This place was recommended by a local and it did not disappoint. Make sure to get reservations! Service and food was great. The rabbit was outstanding and the pork was terrific. Paired with great wine and yummy desserts.

Google
The best overall restaurant in Rome I’ve been to so far. Compelled to write this review because the service level was just the best and friendliest and most professional. Food was amazing. Every bite just made you go for the next mouthful. Will return to try the other dishes.

Google
My expectations were a bit high after reading the reviews but unfortunately we were let down. House wine was very good so was the dessert. However starter and main were average and nothing really special. Service was a mixed bag too as some of the team members were very polite and helpful while others were not. I don't say this light heartedly but it was more than obvious that locals were much more welcome than visitors in this place.

Google
Just a fantastic experience. The food was absolutely delicious, the pasta was incredible and we were lucky to get the last table. Pricing is more than fair for the quality you get there. When in Rome again we will difinitively be back.

Google
Great food and good service... Seems like a local place (the ladies sitting next to me said they visit this restaurant for 20 years!) I ordered the ravioli with potatoes/pig cheek..also the duck breast... Both are very good and are a good experience.. Recommended... Better call in advance for reservation.... You should try if you stay near Termini...

Google
A highly sought-after restaurant that fully deserves its popularity. It’s one of those rare places in Rome where the food is truly delicious, and the menu features some rather unusual options with poultry, rabbit, and fish dishes. The owners' family is genuinely passionate about the restaurant, and it shows—everything is impeccable. This is exactly the kind of place you dream of when you think of the very best of Italian hospitality and cuisine. The wine list is excellent, the desserts are delightful (and not overly sweet), and the staff offers a truly personalized experience—even when there's not a single table left available. We’ll definitely come back… if we manage to get a table again!

Delicious food, wonderful service. Great place for a celebration - birthday, anniversary. Reservation needed.

Google
Hits and misses at this place. There was some miscommunication initially and I didn't get a reservation but once I was seated they were very nice and professional The egg yolk ricotta large ravioli is really a showoff dish, the ricotta really doesn't taste of much except goatiness, no character at all. Skip Sheep brain was super creamy but does have a strong iron taste at the back, however that's where the porcini comes into play. The porcini is not bad and serves to overwhelm the iron taste. Unfortunately it's a little bit sandy, but the whole dish is not bad at all, if strongly seasoned. Duck was excellent. It's one of the best I've had, the rare meat had a slightly bouncy texture on top of expected slight chewiness for this cook. What makes it special is the super aromatic well charred crust, which is completely unnatural for duck and it's almost affixed. The clear sauce was really good too, with the sweet and sour blending w the duck Tagliatelle tastes like perfect mee pok, except the wild boar Ragu was absolutely tasteless. Skip Signature pear tart (which is the brown bulbous pics u see) ran out today, so I got the apple pie. It's served w zabaione with good complexity, although it's more of a cupcake than pie/tart. Apple was also more just a touch, finely minced

Yelp
We heard great things about Trattoria Monti, so we booked a reservation weeks in advance via an international call for our trip. This is definitely the place the locals go. Every table was taken, and conversations were lively! We're not much wine drinkers, but the pork dishes here are incredible. Dessert is fantastic too!

Pete D.

Yelp
A very good find! Cozy comfortable environment. Helpful and attentive service. Nice wine selection. The ricotta spinach ravioli with a light sage sauce was excellent and the traditional roasted pig was good. House made pear tart was wonderful. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
Excellent restaurant featuring cuisine from Le Marche region. We went 5 years ago and again last night. The onion flan with Gorgonzola starter is out of this world. Also loved my eggplant parmigiana and apple tarte (more of a cake) with zabaglione. My husband and son had the steak which was superb. House red was great too. Highly recommend. Worth getting out if Rome's center. Make a reservation.
google avatar

Anita M.

Yelp
The food was indeed very tasty. The red onion flan was distinctive in flavor and needed the strong Gorgonzola cheese to provide balance, but the two played together beautifully and it was a nice size as an appetizer. I also tried the popular tortello, a single, large tortellini that filled a plate. It was filled with ricotta, spinach, and a soft egg yolk that ran out to mix with the other ingredients to make a sauce. This was tasty, and plenty large in size for a single person. Nonetheless, it was not so overwhelmingly amazing that I see it as a "must order" item since they have many other interesting menu options. A reservation seems to be s must as they were so full that they couldn't alter my time when I arrived early. Service was just okay considering the price point of the establishment. I felt neglected and the waitress did not treat me warmly, perhaps influenced by my requests to move the time of my reservation. However, I did not make any fuss about my reservation time and just wanted to see if I could move it to another time. There is only a single bathroom for the entire restaurant, resulting in people frequently standing in a line, which extended into the dining area.

Yelp
One of our favorite restaurants in Rome! Excellent menu options and a great wine list. Service is never rushed and prices are very reasonable for the quality of food offered.
google avatar

Yelp
The best pasta I've ever had was the tagliatelle with wild boar. It was so good I almost cried. I wish I had more belly room so I could try everything on the menu.
google avatar

Isaac E.

Yelp
If you get ANY dish here....let it be the Tortello al rosso d'uovo!. It's basically a massive pasta dumpling with ricotta, spinach and an egg yolk in the middle. When you slice into it, it's just money and BY FAR the best pasta dish I've had in my life (and I've had quite a bit. The red onion flan was also on point, as well as their desserts. I'd recommend to call ahead and book a reservation. They also don't open on Mondays, so keep that in mind when planning. I plan on coming back here, I don't know when, but this will definitely be on my list of places to stop!

Yelp
I wish I could give it a 3.5 stars as the food, service, ambiance all combined warrant a 3.5. 5 stars for the friendliest service we encountered in Roma. The food was pretty good....I was disappointed that they ran out of the eggplant flan that I really wanted to try. I ordered the onion and the radicchio instead...they were good but the radicchio is an acquired taste so be careful as it can be a tad bitter. The food is from the Marche region and is pretty good. The sommelier was really nice and pointed us to a great brunello to complement the food. It's a small restaurant, so make sure you make reservations before going as it was packed at 9:30 pm when we arrived. We stayed past midnight as we were having a great time and at no time were we rushed even as the restaurant slowly became empty. Overall, it can be a bit pricey but the service, food and ambiance made it worth it. The only issue I had was with my main pasta dish...it was ok, nothing great and was a bit salty. Apart from that, we enjoyed the meal and the excellent service. I will probably be back to try the eggplant flan!

Yelp
I guess every restaurant has an off night. It's just a little unusual for one with a Michigan rating. They certainly didn't live up to their rating today. So disappointed with our visit. Not so much the food, but more so the service. I'm giving it 2 stars - 4 for food / and 1 for service. In my opinion service is just as important as the food. As other reviews have mentioned, the Red Onion Flan was good- tasted just like Christmas stuffing. The Raviolo was as always - great. Traditional Pasta dishes were also prepared well. The suckling pig was good to. However, my first choice was the quail. It was one of the specials of the night. Placed the order, only to have the waiter come back and place a menu in front of me - they were out of quail. How can you be "out of quail"? , we were the first reservation of the night. Monk fish with a side of steamed vegetables it is then. The monk fish was not fresh- the dining room near our table filled with an awful fish smell. Never got the vegetables. The waiter never returned to ask how things were. Over 35 minutes - Never asked if we wanted more wine (yes) or water (also a yes). Only after another server noticed our displeasure did they ask what was wrong. The dining experience at this point is ruined- no going back now. No coffee, no desert, no happy customers. Having dined here before, I was sad that this was a Disappointing end to our visit to Rome. Maybe next time - we will have to see.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious, hidden gem! After a long flight we chose this restaurant because it was close to our hotel.... and we're glad it was! We didn't have a reservation but they were able to get us a table. I recommend making reservations. We started with the zucchini flan and it was so delicious! A must try! Next, for our pasta course, we shared the mushroom risotto. Another great dish! For entree I had the eggplant parm and my husband had the beef rolls. Again, both incredible. The dessert was to die for! Amaretto ice cream covered in chocolate sauce. If you get nothing else, you should definitely get this! We enjoyed our meal with good wine and great service. I highly recommend!

Yelp
Don't miss. Delicious and top notch service. My way of ending a whirlwind tour of Rome. Make reservations otherwise you will have to wait until after 10 pm or next day if it's not a weekend. They open at 8 pm for dinner. Pistachio ice cream dessert.

Yelp
The pasta dishes here are steller. This is also interested because this is regional to an area about 50 miles Northeast of Rome, which makes this place rather interesting. The key to the items here are ANYTHING and EVERYTHING with truffle as they have the best balance of truffling I have ever experienced in their pasta dishes. I wills say that notable downside to this place is that it is on the pricier end of things (so a dinner for 2 could easily go to 80+ Euro if you aren't careful). The bread is also mediocre, but if you stick with the pasta dishes, all you do is win.

Yelp
This was mine and my boyfriends last meal in Rome during our touristy adventures around Italy. It was absolutely delicious! Made a reservation by calling ahead- be sure to do this. The restaurant got packed quickly. We had been looking for a good bolognese during our travels and this was an excellent recommendation from a friend. We don't eat pork so we were very relieved to know that the meat was a mixture of beef, chicken, and duck. I never thought that combo would taste so good! We also shared the ravioli stuffed with a decadent egg yolk covered in sage and butter sauce. Wow. I wish I could eat this over and over and over again.
google avatar

Ashley A.

Yelp
Wonderful meal although there were no standout dishes. My friend and I shared the red onion flan with Gorgonzola cream sauce which was very flavorful. I then had the tortello which is like a large ravioli with a runny egg in the center. Although the dish was creative, I found the flavor bland. We then capped off dinner with the amaretto semifreddo and chocolate dessert. The chocolate fudge sauce was perfectly thick. I would very much recommend this place especially for a different taste of Italy since all the food is from the Le Marche region. Also, the service was excellent and the waiters spoke wonderful English. Reservations are a must in this small joint.
google avatar

Gareth W.

Yelp
Fabulous food, great service. Be sure to book ahead as it was very busy and a lot of the specials sold out in first sitting. The tortello was amazing as per other reviews, as was the red onion flan ordered by a friend. We had a carafe of the house wine which was ok but quite acidic but reasonable at 12€, there is an extensive wine list though for all tastes and pockets.
google avatar

OKae H.

Yelp
Go here for the red onion souffle. The rest is lagniappe. Honestly, besides the service, that is the only dish I remember eating. Busy during lunch so make a res.

Yelp
We were in a rush - we were hungry, most places close before 3PM and were desperate to find a place to find a place that serves lunch at 2:00PM. We stopped by here and they accommodated us. We loved the place for its elegant atmosphere AND friendly service. DRINKS: Had a glass of Sangiovese. It was really nice. SERVICE: Friendly. DECOR: Lots of well dressed white collar locals eat here. PRICE: I thought it was on a pricier end. But was happy with the food we ordered. Deep fried veggie Fritti - wow the salami fritti was great Short grain pasta and cheese soup - Nice salty touch Eggplant and cheese bake - Ok. Bolognese sauce pasta - Yum. Loved the light tomatoes for the meat sauce Rigatoni with sausage and cheese - Exactly what I wanted - Fatty sausage and salty cheese Pasta.

Yelp
Waited for about 2hours to for this wonderful meal but it was well worth the wait!! A small family like atmosphere great food they had me at the stuffed artichoke (which was the first time I ever had artichoke) was absolutely delicious!!! And the baby pig was so elegant done!! Being a Texas resident this was some of the best pork I've ever had !! Baby pig on a bed of roasted potatoes!!! The risotto was creamy and flavorful seasoned to perfection!!rice was perfectly cooked ! Melted in my mouth !! The risotto and baby pig was phenomenal prelude to an epic ending of ice cream balls with 1,000 notes I can't even describe along with a smooth espresso !!!

Yelp
This restaurant prepared the best meal I have eaten. Period. Full stop. Squisito! Every dish we ordered (and I sampled them all) from starter to dessert set the bar for food I've had prepared for me. The suggestion to make a reservation was a good one, several diners mentioned they were several attempts into landing a table before they finally got in. Even if you don't have a reservation, ask! So worth the visit, in a city full of renowned trattoria.

Yelp
Lovely spot, authentic food and effortless Roman feeling. The owners are very nice and easygoing. Sometimes hard to get a reservation but worth trying.

Yelp
We were in Rome for three days and only found this place because a local Italian at a wine shop recommended it. You know it's good when mostly Italians are eating there. The fried zucchini and olives were splendid. We both got the specials and they were perfect. Mine was a homemade ravioli with grouper. This is a 15 minute walk from the coliseum if you go through the park. Make a reservation. My favorite dinner spot in Rome.
google avatar

Schelly Y.

Yelp
The restaurant was tiny and also fully booked. Thankfully we had reservations. We tried the fried squash blossoms and artichokes, a sausage pasta, and the tagliatelle bolognese. The squash blossoms and artichokes were delicious with a nice light crisp batter. It also came with some random thicker cut sausage or salami slices that had a strangely soft texture. I wasn't a huge fan of it but I also wasn't sure what it was exactly and if it was supposed to taste like that. The pastas here were great though.

Daren A.

Yelp
Best food we had in Italy , hands down, and we had numerous unbelievable meals while we were there. The ravioli and bolognese were out of this world. If you travel to Rome, you need to check this restaurant out for sure.

Yelp
I didn't know before going, but apparently they got a Michelin star in 2014! I arrived a bit before they opened, so I sat at the door for about ten minutes until I was seated properly at a table. The waiter was very friendly and understood English, and he gave me an English menu. I came here for the pasta because the Internet had said it has the best pasta in Rome, and I ordered the tortello. The waiter suggested the butter and sage sauce instead of the tomato sauce, and it turned out to be great, very light. The tortello itself was simply amazing. The first bite I took, it literally melted in my mouth. The pasta was so fresh and chewy, and the filling was so creamy and smooth with cheese and spinach? or some sort of green food. I had to control myself to not scarf down the entire piece all at once. The egg was delicious too, very runny and melted well with the rest of the ravioli. I was concerned that it would just ooze out so I quickly scooped it up with the ravioli pasta. It was simply amazing. I deducted one star because at €12, I expect to be full after eating. I was very far from being full; I felt like I just ate a snack. But, the tortello was amazing, definitely deserving of 5 stars!

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended by my Airbnb host, a small neighborhood restaurant operated by 2 brothers. The restaurant is busy and you should make reservation before going there. Fortunately they are nice enough to accommodate us and have about 1.5hours seating time. Small menu, which is a good sign that they do the best on what they offer. Pasta dishes was amazing. My sister found the black sausage pasta was a bit on salty side, but the ravioli with cheese and egg yolk is phenomenal. Love it and finished the whole plate. Desserts are absolutely stunning too. In house freshly prepared, the wild strawberry jelly had amazing combination with the yogurt sorbet and peach purée. The daily special pear pie is so good that you have to order if they offer when you are there. Alternately, amazing dinner and highly recommend.

Yelp
Thanks to the Yelp Gods and to instinct we found this place. WONDERFUl food, charming staff and ambience...I highly recommend this trattoria. It is only a few block from Case di Rosy B&B where we stayed. The noodles (their word) with anchovies and raisins was magical. The rabbit was astounding. Jose ordered the lamb chops but they were out...a good sign...but we were both pleased to find they would serve us some meat from the rest of the beast...a rear joint...in the most amazing fashion and with great flair and a sensual taste....execellent...fresh...delightful and NOT expensive. 2 carafes of house white four plates and only 73 Euros. Yum...GO THERE. Um...but make reservations on a Saturday nite...very busy. Best time to eat? 9pm. xo

Yelp
Gem near termini! This cozy restaurant has both some of the best service and handmade pastas I had during 12 days in Italy. We had a daily special of tagliatelle with porcini and ravioli with ricotta (sage butter sauce). The tagliatelle was a simple but stunningly well flavored - one of the standouts of handmade pasta I've had. The ravioli was filled with a good amount of cheese and overall it was a good dish but we liked the tagliatelle better. Their bread basket had sourdough, plain white and a nutty wheat bread - more complex than most and very fresh.

Yelp
We had heard that this place was better than average and so went for check it out in spite of neglecting to book ahead. They were of course full up but for just the two of us gave us a cheeky table under the agreement we would be quick (by Rome standards) before the next booking required the chairs. We are so grateful they did this for us, they really are great food at a worthy price. We enjoyed a main and dessert each, with wine, and were not disappointed. If you're going to be in the area, do seek them out. And of course book ahead! This isn't your street-side haggling tourist trap

Yelp
My friends and I were so excited to try this place at it was recommended by a friend for their amazing egg yolk ravioli. Homemade ravioli and oozing egg yolk sounded delicious to me, so we decided to eat there. We got to the restaurant around 630-7? We walked past it and realized the gate was down but saw some staff when we peaked in. Another couple came by later and they tried eating there but the staff didn't come out to tell us they weren't open yet. We weren't sure if they were closing for the night or opening; however, we wanted to make a reservation. It would have been decent of the staff to at least come to the entrance and tell us they weren't open yet. Ten to fifteen minutes later the owner (?) came to unlock the gate to go inside and he said they were fully booked for the next two days but if we come back later around 1030 it should be ok. We were starving but desperate to go even more now since they were fully booked for the next two days that we decided to eat at another place first and then come back. He recommended a spot which was nice of him. We ate and then came back because we were destined to try their egg yolk ravioli. We sat down and ordered two thinking only one big ravioli comes in an order. We also ordered the fried lamb chops. We received our ravioli dishes and boy were we surprised. They just looked like ordinary ravioli. We took a bite and realized it was cooked egg yolk and they tasted like normal cheese ravioli. The lamb chops were overly breaded and the meat didn't taste like lamb. As you can imagine...all four of us were disappointed. I still can't believe this place was so packed and that it received a Michelin star. The service was decent but food is subpar. I would probably find this place to be 2.5 stars but couldn't justify rounding it up, especially with my high expectations as it received a Michelin star.

Yelp
Nice local spot for lunch. It's close to the Santa Maria Maggiore on the south side. I had the rigatoni with pecorino cheese, minced sausage, and black pepper. The pasta was perfectly 'al dente' and delicious. Along with wine, my lunch was 14 euros.

Carl H.

Yelp
Restaurant was highly recommended but received bad service and mediocre food. Not impressed!

Jason B.

Yelp
Book your reservation now because this place is amazing (and fills up) I have been traveling in France and Italy for 2 weeks now and this was the best meal that I have had. The restaurant is coy and makes you feel at home. The waiters knew the perfect level of attentiveness, unlike the typical European tourist trap where they ignore you. They take a team approach and seem to know just when you need something but stay away when your enjoying your food. Every course was excellent. We had the large ravioli with egg yolk/ricotta which was perfect. We also tried the pasta dish with sausage which was excellent. For entrees we had the steak and chicken special which were just what we needed on a trip that was otherwise lacking in good protein. Please make a reservation here. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Bruce R.

Yelp
Best Restaurant in Rome. Every course we had was incredible and an explosion of diverse flavors. We started with the large sautéed artichoke and the grouper stuffed ravioli. The ravioli was the ravioli Della casa and was superb. Our second course was the rigatoni with sausage. This may have been our best dish. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the simple ingredients made the dish perfection. We finished our meal with the stuffed rabbit which was excellent as well. The bottle of red wine, il divo our server suggested was one of the most delicious wines I've ever had. The dishes here are not Roman, they are from the region Marche. If you are looking to try something other than the traditional Roman dishes like Carbonara and Amatriciana, this is the place for you. May be helpful to have a few Italian phrases down before going here as this restaurant is not in a touristy area.

Ashley H.

Yelp
The food was delicious-- my friends and I shared the fried olives/artichokes and zucchini flowers which were a great appetizer for 3 people. The wine list selection was wide, and we had a delicious white from the Amalfi Coast. My entree was the vegetarian Aubergine Parmesan and it was the perfect size, and the flavors were excellent. The atmosphere is chic hole-in-the-wall/hidden gem; a great place for a date or a small dinner with friends. My one complaint is the service-- we were slightly neglected within the first 8 minutes on getting water for the table and our waiter seemed condescending and didn't have much personality. I would go back, as the food was excellent, but with discretion as the service may not be the most friendly.
google avatar

Katelyn R.

Yelp
Best food in Rome! Tried just about everything on the menu and the egg yolk ravioli was my absolute favorite. The pasta was cooked perfectly, the inside was super creamy and the egg yolk was almost orange it was so fresh... to die for! Would fly back to Europe just to see mama and eat her wonderful food again!

Yelp
Tip 1: make a reservation before going! We called at 7 pm on a Saturday night, and got a table for 10:30 (but arrived at the restaurant at 10 to try our luck, and got seated). This place was a really great experience! They have a few dishes that are off the menu so make sure to ask the waiter (who are extremely nice or at least ours was amazing and smiling the whole time and made our experience just so wonderful!) I had the egg yolk ravioli paired with a glass of Sangiovese and an apple strudel (off menu!) for dessert, of course with the delicious Italian short espresso. The food was amazing. There's just no competing with homemade pasta. One thing that did surprise me and that is also the reason why this place has 4 stars instead of five, is the bread! For a Michelin star restaurant, they could have much better bread and that was unfortunately quite a disappointment :3 but over all, an awesome experience and definitely recommended!

Alana M.

Yelp
Amazing place. If you're in Rome, just must go here. The food is not traditional Roman (it is from the Marche region), but if you're in Rome for any length of time you will want a break from the same 5 (delicious) pastas the other Roman restaurants serve. You'll find it here. My husband and I lived in Rome for awhile and we loved coming here for a great dinner. For a starter, the parmesan flan is my absolute favorite. It's a little cake of bread drenched in a parm sauce--basically a bread pudding. Incredible. For the first course, I love the mezze maniche (large rigatoni) with pecorino, pepper and sausage. Cheesy, salty, peppery, delicious. It's like cacio e pepe with a kick. I rarely order a second course because I love pasta so much, but my husband has loved their steak and recently the swordfish. Order the semifreddo for dessert. Just do it. The staff is great as well. It's a family run place and they remember their customers and treat them well. It should be understood that you won't be receiving American style service, but the service is quite good for Roman standards, as long as you understand that no one is going to run by to refill your water every few minutes. It's expected that you will relax and savor the meal, and they are not in a hurry to get you out. We were just recently in Rome for a short vacation and this was the place we were dying to go back to. The waiters remembered us and welcomed us back warmly. Can't recommend it enough. Reservation is required.

Laurie W.

Yelp
Awful. My husband and I saved this for our last night in Rome. It came recommended by a NYC chef, Gabriella Hamilton, of Prune Restaurant, in a piece from the New York Times. I've eaten at her place and read her book-- I like and respect her. I'm a chef myself in Boston. Food while traveling is a big part of my enjoyment. But I think G. Hamilton may have confused her nostalgia for a place that holds fond memories with this restaurant in its current state. The staff was good. The food you could mash with a spoon. And flavorless. After artichokes and pasta we cut our losses and asked for the bill. What a disappointment. We loved Rome but this was a bad last experience.

Yelp
We got to this place on the first night in Rome. And it was hands down the best meal we have had here. It is innovative, insanely delicious, and super nice, cozy atmosphere. Book in advance!

Angela H.

Yelp
Another visit to the Monti. Lunch with first-timers. Delicious fried appetizers-stuffed olives and other treats. I tried their tagliatelle con ragu which was a winner. Always on my list when in Rome near Termini.

Lana B.

Yelp
Great food and fancy atmosphere for not too expensive!

Joe D.

Yelp
This was the best meal we had in Rome. The service was excellent and the place was very nice. They made excellent wine recommendations and the food was fresh and interesting. Ravioli with the egg yolk was my favorite. I will definitely go back on my next trip to Rome.

Bill P.

Yelp
What a disappointment for our last night in Rome. Base on some very good published recommendations we choose Trattoria Monti. The food was poorly executed and lacking any sense of quality and taste. The only relief was, that the pricing for the meal and the wine was quite reasonable and the staff was very good. However that was no consolation for extremely disappointing meal in which simplicity was not even done well. The trek was not worth it and we suggest both Romans as well as visitors with a decent palate avoid.
