Traverse City’s Best Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes | Eater Detroit

"Closing in on 21 years, Trattoria Stella has earned the title of grande dame of the Traverse City dining scene. Beloved for its house burrata, tender grilled octopus, and homemade charcuterie offerings, the restaurant is also home to one of the most thoughtful Italian wine lists in Michigan. Stella’s cavernous, subterranean dining room is as romantic as it gets and is a great place to celebrate your anniversary. Secure a table on Resy or place an order for pickup." - Stacey Brugeman

Trattoria Stella is celebrating 20 years of service in Traverse City | Eater Detroit

"Housed in the beloved arches of the redeveloped Grand Traverse Commons (a former state hospital), this cavernous, romantic restaurant helped define Northern Michigan’s farm-to-table movement over the past two decades. Co-owned by sommelier Amanda Danielson and chef Myles Anton, it features a daily-changing menu built around longtime partnerships with local growers—individuals like Heirloom Craig (tomatoes), Werp Farms (sylvetta arugula), and Jen Bramer’s Local Yokels Farm (celery)—and emphasizes housemade pasta and whole-animal butchery. The wine program is a standout, mixing Italian-focused selections with Michigan producers (including an anniversary sparkling called “Through the Sextant” and collaborations with Piedmont and Oregon winemakers). Community engagement is central: the team stages wine dinners, charity events (notably a picnic with a whole roasted pig, spicy Calabrian vinaigrette, cavatappi pasta salad, and local strawberry shortcake), and industry-building initiatives such as the Dirt to Glass conference and a planned teaching vineyard. With multiple James Beard semifinal nods for the chef, exceptional staff retention, and recent efforts to improve employee benefits and work-life balance, the restaurant is credited with elevating the region’s culinary and wine culture while maintaining a strong commitment to local sourcing and hospitality." - Stacey Brugeman

Despite COVID-19, Northern Michigan Restaurants Broke Records During Summer 2020 | Eater Detroit

"The subterranean Trattoria Stella, a 15-year favorite in Traverse City, was down about 60 percent this summer after operating at roughly 35 percent of its pre-pandemic seats to achieve true social distancing; owner Amanda Danielson applied to expand seating into an adjacent interior corridor but had not received approval, a change she said could have meant six figures for the business this year." - Stacey Brugeman

What Northern Michigan Restaurants Learned From Two Weeks of Reopening | Eater Detroit

"Located in the basement of a historic state psychiatric hospital, I noted that Trattoria Stella faces unique spacing challenges—thick brick alcoves limit seating so the restaurant realistically caps at about 33 percent capacity despite a 50 percent allowance—and staff have even begun manning the hostess stand themselves to enforce safety measures." - Stacey Brugeman

Restaurants in Northern Michigan React to Reopening at 50 Percent Capacity | Eater Detroit

"I heard co-owner Amanda Danielson express cautious optimism about Trattoria Stella in Traverse City reopening on Friday given the region’s relatively few cases, while noting concern that many summer visitors come from higher-infection areas; the restaurant plans to seat only customers with reservations." - Brenna Houck

We hadn’t been to Stella in quite awhile - it was always very good when we went and we were very glad that they have maintained that level of service and quality for at least the 20 years we’ve been going!! The food was outstanding, service was great (thanks Anna!) and we had a great time for our 20 year wedding anniversary. Got a few pics, but started eating most times before I remembered to take them! You can be sure though that whatever you decide on, it will be a great experience.

It was a nice experience and the staff was lovely. We are well traveled internationally and were in town on vacation when we dined here. It is very good and deserves its fine reputation. Yet 3 stars because I believe the prices are simply too high for the offering and out of alignment with market standards. Ravioli for $50? Really? Yet, we had a lovely dinner here. Our meal for three people (one child) and only 1 adult drinking alcohol-a beer and modest glass of wine) was $200. I believe that’s quite a premium for location and accommodations - simply too high for the offering. There is a lot of competition at this price point. At this level, I believe it needs to offer a waterfront view. I am happy that we went here though. My wife and daughter had a great time. I believe this review is fair.

We had an absolutely amazing early dinner here! We went at 5, right when they opened and it was already fairly busy, definitely reserve a table! We were a group of 7 so we got this lovely large table in the back, it was quite and perfect for 2 young kids. Everyone loved everything! The Raspberry Beret Cocktail was great. Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious and the server was very attentive. Highly recommend and while they do not have it on the main menu, there are some kids menu options the server will tell you about.

I went to this restaurant for an anniversary dinner. My boyfriend made us reservations so it was a breeze getting in. For us this was fancy. Most people that were here were dressed up a bit more. We did the same because we were celebrating. Farm fresh food with amazing options. I got the Atlantic Lemon Sole and my boyfriend got the fettuccine with meatballs. They were big portions as well as big flavor. I love, loved it. Our meals alone were around 40-45 dollars each and that was not with drinks. So if you go here know you are paying more but I promise the food was worth it. The waitress we had was very informative and helped me pick out a red wine that was delightful. The glass of wine was $28. This is not a place I would be a regular at because of the price. But for celebrating, I would one hundred percent come back to try more. There were a lot of kids here so you can definitely bring your kids. The entire staff that we dealt with were so friendly.

Menu prepared and printed daily as they decide what to prepare. Many interesting choices. The ravioli was very good. The white pizza needed some spice, it was a bit bland. Lots of interesting drink choices. A bit pricey but to be expected in this type of restaurant.

First time in Traverse City and this was honestly one of the best restaurants I have had. Starting from the service to the food everything was excellent. For me the Burrata is a must order and extremely filling if it’s just 2. As for main dishes I love the aspect of everything being farm to table my favorite thing I tried was the Maltagliati. But they have a rotating menu so there’s something new to try almost every week. Overall amazing experience!

Traveling with girlfriends to TVC and after a day at the Sleeping Bear Dunes, we were able to make dinner reservations online for a party of 6 and enjoy the most incredible meal! We ate family style so we got a great tasting of Chef Oscar's creations. The Squash bottom appetizers and all 3 salads served were a tease of deliciousness because the entrees shared among us was a burst of flavor and goodness! By far the best eggplant parmisean I ever had! The lemon sole and pesto risotto was cooked to perfection! Sharing friendship and good meals makes for a memorable Girls Trip! Our server Shelby was incredible!

The service and food both far exceeded our expectations. A phenomenal meal is almost an understatement. The steak was so perfectly cooked and tender. The flavor was out of this world! The ravioli was to die for. The bread that comes out with the oil in the beginning was so soft, so warm, very enjoyable and the desserts were a dream come true!
