Treasure Trove Foreign Currency Exchange

I had a great experience with Treasure Trove for my foreign currency order. Mark was excellent from start to finish. I order currency every month for my travel business and had been using my business bank, Bank of America, but they never honored my request for specific bill sizes. Mark took the time to understand exactly what I needed and placed the order for the exact bills I wanted. The currency arrived the very next day which was amazing and far better service than I have received anywhere else. Parking was surprisingly easy even with the office being in downtown DC. I found a space right in front of the building which made the visit even smoother. Treasure Trove has definitely earned my repeat business. I highly recommend them for anyone who needs reliable and accurate foreign currency orders.

I had a great experience buying Euros for an upcoming foreign trip. Marc's office is conveniently located in downtown D.C., and, a visit to him saved me a lot of time and hassle, eliminating my having to worry about obtaining foreign currency at the airport, under stress and possibly forgetting to do so. Some misguided folks have criticized Marc's exchange rates. I think this attitude reflects ignorance and a lack of fairness. Marc's rates are better than airport currency exchange rates (per a query to Claude.ai). Plus, part of what you're paying for is the convenience and peace of mind of having cash in hand, prior to embarking on your trip -- that's one less thing to worry about. I'd use Marc again, without hesitation, and I readily recommend his services to savvy travelers who want to make their lives easier.

Treasure trove is my go to currency exchange rate place in DC! Yes, sometimes your bank may have a slightly better exchange rate, but also most banks only carry a limited variety of foreign currencies and only at specific locations. For any less-common or last minute foreign currency needs, this has always been my go to. The service is excellent and they have always had what I needed and given me a fair rate for it. Also, when you say you want small bills, you actually get them! Unlike the banks who think $50 notes are small bills… I will continue frequenting treasure trove for all my foreign currency needs!

Treasure trove is awesome I have been many times and they have always had exactly what I needed weather it be less prevalent currency or small bills of euros. Would recommend to anyone looking for a convenient and personal experience!

Their exchange rate is worse than Bank of America. I understand taking $5 exchange fee, but they should at least have a better exchange rate if they are charging the fee. Also, they made it hard to get to the office for no reason. I had to pay a parking fee and show ID to get into the building. The receptionist was very kind, but I got lost in the building for a good minute before she noticed me. Lastly, be prepared to wait before you see the worker.

i went yesterday. It's across the street from the metro stop. I had a handful of colombian pesos after returning from living abroad. Was in and out in like five minutes with USD in my hands. Way too easy. I'll for sure be using this place again. Painless. Recommended.

Fantastic currency exchange. Mark is extremely helpful. I have been using Treasure Trove for over 20 years. They always have the currency I need at the best exchange rates. Do not use the exchanges at the airport as they are very expensive compared to Mark. Note, this is cash only, but in a very safe location.

Horrendous rates, went in to exchange dollars for Colombian Pesos and he tells me the rate that was just an insult. I ask him why this rate (keep in mind the peso is at 3,700 to the dollar and he was offering about 3,000) more than 20% wasted. He provides no explanation just flips his computer for two seconds and says that's the rate. He has a horrible attitude and would highly advise just withdrawing from the atm at one time and eating the fees. Will never use this place again, horrendous experience.

At the end of it all, I was able to get the exchange of cash needed for a trip. The gentleman that provided the actual service was polite however the service after getting off the elevator could have been better.

Amazing and prompt customer service! I called to find out their hours of operations and Mark was beyond helpful and pleasant. He not only provided the requested information but also put the needed currency on hold for me. Once I arrived, he was just as pleasant in-person and had be in and out in less than 10 minutes. I will definitely use Treasure Trove again! And remember to look out for the Benson Jeweler's sign, as they are located within the jewelry store.

After receiving wrong information from my bank about obtaining foreign currency I thought I have no other choice but to go to Travelex. I did a quick Google search for Travelex dc area and somehow I found Treasure Trove. Because I was multitasking I thought it was an actual Travelex location. So when the owner said "Treasure Trove" when he answered the phone I was a bit confused and asked "is this Travelex?" He responded "No and Travelex is way more expensive!" That, of course immediately got my attention. So I asked if he had the 2 currencies I was looking for (Argentine peso & Brazilian real), and indeed he did. He earned a new customer today and I'll be spreading the word.

The gentleman was welcoming and nice. It was fast, and I even got parking directly across the street!

However, our rates are low determined by CXI and my inventory is strictly inventoried and reported weekly to ensure that our customers receive the exact amount due. We have extremely high customer satisfaction and our rates are much lower than our competitors. After 9 years of service, we have rarely have had a low review. In fact, my jewelry store, Treasure Trove Jewelers, ran from 1946 until last year, and was beloved by the DC community. A business does not last that long if the owners are not honorable and treat their customers with respect as they deserve. I feel that I needed to share my thoughts with you because reputation is all you have at the end of the day.

I've been to Treasure Trove many times, both for currency exchange and watch repair/battery services. I love them. Friendly, professional, and I'm always able to get in and out quickly. If you need a currency that they don't have on hand, you can just call in and request it, and they'll have it for you the next business day! They have good exchange rates and are very transparent on their fees, which are low. The other day, I needed the battery replaced in a special watch I received as a gift in Korea. It doesn't have a typical build and I could tell that it was going to be hard to open. They managed to do it without scratching the crystal, which was great. I come back every time!

We went here a few days before we left for South Africa. The customer service was great and we were able to get the South African rand without a problem. I feel like their rates are better than other travel currency exchanges we have used in the past. The only challenge we had is that they did not have the Mauritian Rupee. But it turns out we were ok without that currency :). All in all, we will definitely use this for our next international trip!

Unfortunately, I waited until the last minute to inquire about exchanging money before my trip. But, good info to know for next time. .. If they don't have the currency on hand, it usually takes about 24 hours for the currency to arrive. Located inside the Treasure Trove jewelry shop. Friendly service with a smile.

I did a exchange for South Africa currency and the service was great and fast. No other business had this currency but this one did with a good rate. I almost passed it, its a jewelry store.

Went into this business on my first trip to Mexico and thought I was getting 300 worth of Mexican money. First mistake I was on the phone when I went in . This happened last year and I didn't yelp about it but I did report to better business bureau. The older man dipped me for $150. I was mad then but not anymore. I wonder what has happened to the business since Covid. You can't do wrong and think it want come back to you! Will never visit this place again.

Mohammad was excellent. His exchange rate was as good as my bank's, Bank of Am., and I didn't have to wait. Walked it, gave him the US currency and walked out with my Euros. I also cashed in some Turkish money I'd had sitting around from a trip two years ago. Will definitely go back again!

I exchanged my dollars to peso two days before my Mexico trip. Such a easy process, go in with cash and walk out with your currency, no hassle. The exchange rate was pretty good compare to the airports and other places.

Quick and easy process. I was able to exchange USD for both Pounds and Euros for a decent rate. I would definitely use them again.

Recommended for currency exchange. I exchanged dollars to euros. The rate I got was better than other nearby options like travelex offered and the fee was a flat $5 for less than $500. They also had plenty of small denominations and were able to accommodate any preferences for how to receive currency.

I was trying to sell some foreign currency I had left over after a trip and was quoted the wrong amount (not even close, less than 1/4 of what I expected it to be worth, even with a low exchange rate). I thought maybe I had done the math wrong, and when I tried to pull out my phone to check, was told very patronizingly and exasperatedly to "put away your phone" and that his quote was absolutely right and to take it or leave it. I left and fortunately figured out my bank would just exchange it for me at exactly the rate I had been expecting.

Overall great, quick service before an upcoming trip. Lower rate than other exchange services and conveniently in the metro center area.

Treasure Trove has been around for over 70 years and I've never had a bad experience in the 30 years of receiving service. I went to purchase currency for an upcoming trip. I did my research and they were by far the quickest and the cheapest. No bait and switch. I tried the place at Union Station and I was not pleased with what they offered just to exchange currency and then if you do this and that you get this.... Who has time for that. Treasure Trove it is.

Got 500 euros today from TTFCX for $637 USD. Should've checked with PNC Bank first; would've saved $18.

I just called to ask for exchange rates and what the fees are and the guy who answered the phone sounded so agitated.

At the last minute, I needed some Ukrainian money for an upcoming trip and Treasure Trove came through! They were able to get me the funds within 24 hours at a decent exchange rate. I would definitely go to them again. Customer service was top notch and I highly recommend.

This place is a great place to convert currency! Super easy and fast. My friend and I came into the store to convert USD to Mexican pesos for our cancun trip and the process was very simple. The man working there was nice and helpful. XE.com says that $98USD is equal to 1795 MXN. I got back 1600 MXN (195 MXN short). That must have been the conversion fee (which is about $10 USD). Additionally, this place is also a jewelry store.

I haven't even been in to the store yet, but they are the only business who answered the first time I called, was able to exchange my foreign currency for U.S. dollars, actually gave me the exchange rate WITHOUT me having to ask, AND is charging me 10% or less to exchange my money. By far the best in the area!

My daughter called in yesterday to exchange some currency after being directed there by a local PNC branch. The man she dealt with summarily dismissed her enquiry. However the manner he did it in was appalling. He was rude, unhelpful and downright obnoxious. I approached him about his behaviour and what was most worrying is that he didnt feel he had done anything wrong. Thank God we only had to experience him for a short time. Imagine living or working with him on a long term basis.

Markups are at least 8%. Average customer service. You are better off withdrawing from an ATM in the foreign country you are visiting and eating the fees (or better yet carry a card that reimburses your fees).

I needed to get Euros for an upcoming trip. I love that this place has same day Euros available. Bank of America has a $7 fee to get Euros and a 3 to 5 business day wait. This establishment has only a $5 fee and you get your money the same day. The owner and workers are friendly and personable. I would return again in the future.

BEWARE OF THE BAIT AND SWITCH! The customer service here is atrocious. I called to get the exchange rate and was told it would be .70. I then went to the shop. When I walked in, the old guy at the counter did not even acknowledge me. I waited. And waited. Nothing. Maybe he didn't notice me. Giving the benefit of the doubt, I left and returned a few hours later. This time he actually said hello. When I approached the counter he acted as if I was invisible again. I told him I need currency exchanged. Begrudgingly, he went to the back office and brought back a computer. After putting in all the numbers he told me the rate would be .66. WHAT! I would lose $24 because of the difference. Bait and switch. No way. Terrible way to do business. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Small, family-owned shop that's friendly and offers much better exchange rates than the chains. I just exchanged currency I brought back from a trip and they beat Travelex by more than 10%! Always call and ask rates and fees--you will be amazed how different these are at different places.

Yes, it's a little strange to go do currency exchange at a jewelry store, and the service is very personal as a result rater than being bank-like professional. But I think changing money here rather than at the Travelex at Union Station saved me at least $22 if not more. That's more than worth the trip downtown.

By far the best place to exchange in DC. I checked a competitor across town and saved 12 cents per dollar on a U.S./Euro exchange on 7/31/15. That's huge. The fact they are incredibly friendly and competent are added bonuses.

By far the best rate I could find in the DC area and a low fee. Excellent customer service--confirmed the rate over the phone, had what I needed the same day, and very friendly in person.

Treasure Trove is the place to change money in D.C. I called around and they beat the competition by about 8%, which is huge in this business. For an international city, you'd think D.C. would have competitive off-the-street money exchange business like you find in other countries, but it doesn't. Evidently the banks don't want the smaller business and Travelex faces little competition, so there's a niche, and Treasure Trove fills it. On the phone and in person they were friendly, efficient and glad to buy my Euros.

On today I visited Treasure Trove to exchange my Yuan money to US Dollars. I went to this business based on the review From Hamid N. on 4/29/14. After waiting for about 5 minutes the owner (White Male) look at me (African -American Woman) and said "what's up". I said well hello to you sir. He then looked at me as though he did not understand politeness and said again "what's up". I then said again hello to you, I am here to exchange my yuan money to US dollars but can you tell me the exchange rate please. He said "yuan money what that". I informed him that is currency used in China and it is called YUAN. He then looked as though he now knew what it was. Afterwards, he asked of me "do you know how much you have and let me see it". I said yes I know how much I have but I want you to tell me what I have. I did this to test his honesty, knowledge and to see if he knew what he was doing as I was determine not to tell him the amount I had which total up to $348.84 in US dollars. The owner then counted the money, loudly and to my surprise considering he initially act as though he didn't know what yuan money was at first, while adding it up on his calculator. He then said the total amounted to $211.22 in US dollars and then asked me "is this right". I told him no this is not right. I then wanted to see just how far he was willing to proceed with this lie and him THINKING he could get over on me (particularly because I was an African-American) and asked again ......sir what is your exchange rate please. He then looked at me in an irate manner and went to the back of his store. Roughly around 30 seconds or so he came back out and went to another customer and then told me while in front of another customer some outrageous and bogus exchange rate. Another African-American woman that was there in the store waiting to be served after me said Ms. do you travel a lot and I told her that I am well traveled and have had the opportunity to see a lot of the world that most Americans have yet to see if they ever do in their life time. I then told the lady that the owner was rude and was literally trying to rob me. Perhaps the owner thought I was desperate for money or something and was going to take him at his word and allow him to rip me off as he just give me any kind of amount thinking I would be satisfied. I just collected my yuan money up from the counter, looked at him sternly and then left quietly out of his store. EVERYONE please be aware that this business is a CROOK and will try to ROB you if you don't know what you have prior to doing business with this owner. This store also exchange jewelry as well as this is the real focus of the business. But again I WARN you even if you have jewelry to exchange for cash I truly believe this owner will rob you and quote a waaaaaaaay lesser price thinking you just don't know and will accept what he says. For your own good I advise you to take your business elsewhere especially if you want to exchange your foreign currency. This business is a big RIP OFF...STAY AWAY........... I've WARNED YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
