Chicago Restaurants Brace For Trump Immigration Raids as Misinformation Flourishes | Eater Chicago

"One of the owner's more recent neighborhood bars launched with his family after his 1990s-era chain ended; the owner frames his advocacy around protecting the hospitality workforce and public safety, warning that enforcement actions could drive Hispanic workers to 'stay home because they don't want to be harassed.' He has met with federal figures about immigration and supports policy paths such as the Dignity Act for some undocumented immigrants, including DREAMers." - Ashok Selvam

I have a special needs child who loves coming to the treehouse. They have our drinks ready as soon as they see us waiting outside( we get there early) they cater to our child’s “special” wants like a certain colored spoon. They give hugs, and call her by name. She collects rocks and they even saved her rock she left behind til the next time we went to eat there . It’s the little things that matter so much the food is always hot and delicious. Atmosphere is always family friendly and the staff is just absolutely amazing .

The Tree House in Vidalia is one of those places that sticks with you. The vibe alone makes it unforgettable, but what really sets it apart is the people. The owner, Dan, is a complete legend, friendly, welcoming, and the kind of guy who makes you feel like you’ve been a regular for years. After last year’s hurricane, the bar had to be rebuilt, but you’d never know it. The staff and regulars give this place a heart and energy that can’t be knocked down. The food is outstanding, the onion petals and shrimp tacos are absolute must-tries, and of course, the beer is ice cold, just the way it should be. Whether you’re local or just passing through, The Tree House is worth the stop.

Google
This is a restaurant that is a replacement building, while the "tree house" is revived from Hurricane Helene. The building isn't fancy but it was clean and simple and very adequate. The food was why the place was full of local people who all seemed to know each other! Love that. We had fried shrimp and okra and salad and loved everything that came with it. Overall, it was a great restaurant in a small town. Hard working people!

Google
Gave me and my family food poisoning. I can’t believe how bad this experience was honestly. The food server rolled her eyes at me and said “I’m not your waitress” when I asked her a question (the server was nowhere to be found for like 20 minutes .) It took us an hour and some change to get our food and when we got it, it was horrible. The prices are way too high for the quality of food we received. The prime rib on the sandwiches were extremely fatty and greasy. The fries had no salt on them whatsoever. The sweet tea tasted like chemical syrup. It really was just bad . I hated it, will never ever eat here again , and today, I will be laid up in bed with food poisoning so that’s great.

Google
Great food, friendly atmosphere . The staff was very prompt and efficient

Google
My wife and I went to tree house to eat dinner after seeing a movie at Sweet Onion Cinemas and were very sad to see the original building cut off and closed due to the walkway being destroyed by either flowing water or a tree fall. The restaurant was operating out of a one-room large open area next to the the original treehouse restaurant. The food and service were still excellent however the hopefully temporary dining area really had no real character to it and the Ambiance of the original restaurant was totally absent hopefully they will be back in the original building before too long

Google
Used to be the best, when Michael owned it. After 7 years of goin’ twice a week, I’ll never be back. Service has gone, they don’t know anyone who comes in anymore. Maybe one day they’ll be back to normal, until then the business is fading.

Google
Wish I could put a negative review. Management dosent give a flip about the place and would rather walk around drinking and acting like they are running for governor than care about customers. Food takes forever and since the og owner sold it the new owners skimped out on product and food is terrible.

Yelp
Food is awesome and the waitress were real attentive we sat inside but there a few families outside !

Yelp
My mom had never been here and we had been once before but what I could remember it was a small, fun, quaint little place off the beaten path with good steaks and seafood. We hadn't eaten all day and were starving. Plus it's an hour drive to get here. We could tell they were crowded from the parking lot but oh well. It's a Friday evening at 7 pm. They took our name down but didn't give a time estimate. We sat outside under the tornado wind fans and picked up some drinks from the bar. Coke for me, tea for mom and a beer for my husband. After about 30 min, we had a table ready. The chef show of smoking outside was getting nauseating. This is where things went south. Our hostess gave us our silverware and menus annnddd left. Empty drinks sat on the table while ice just kept melting. My husband was able to flag someone down to get a drink but she ran off before asking me or my mom. Our waitress finally came to the table and took our appetizer order. She thankfully came back to get our food orders but still no drinks. Now, have you ever heard of island time? Well thats what were on except the music was extremely loud, tables were hooping and hollering and we were stuck sitting in our wicker chairs. The appetizer took about an hour to come out. The fried pickle batter slipped off like a batter stealing base. And some parts of the batter were still undercooked. After that, I noticed the table next to us kept waiting for their bill. They had asked several times. They finally went to the bar after approximately 45 min. My mom started to ask if they forgot us. We still had no drinks by the way. I was willing to drop a $20 and leave. We stayed. Our food came out around 9:30 pm. The French dip so was good but waiting 2 hours good. Im not so sure. We were trying to get to go boxes but ended up having to go to the bar for the boxes and to pay. They were already clearing the table by the time we got back and we had left our stuff there so we could also use the restroom. We just quickly packed our food and went outside to use the bathroom. They women's is a one stall. Not the best. Not the worst. It did its job. Will we be back? Hard to say. 3 hours for food, almost no service and no refills.

Yelp
Coming back visiting Vidalia, with a great surprise to find the original tree house opening back up after Hurricane Halene. We were met with the same southern hospitality that kept bringing me back to the Treehouse with every home visit. Our favorite item, the fried mushrooms were as delicious as we remembered. The Jimmy Burger was juicy and the right amount of rare. Looking forward to making to traditional stop again on my future Vidalia visits!

Yelp
Place was very very busy always.. super yummy Fried Chicken and rolls!! service was friendly.. but one problem.. Not overly clean.

Emmalee S.

Yelp
Waited a long time for food while the cooks were out smoking. I'm a patient person but we were the last to leave after tables that sat after us left way before us

Yelp
If I could give this place 7 stars I would. The atmosphere of the "Treehouse" is unlike any other. Small town friendly faces everytime you go. The staff is very friendly and always welcoming. The food is some of the best you can find in town! The steak sandwiche and mahi taco hits just right! It's our go to at least once a week!

Yelp
This place sux since Helene... the seafood is awful.. fast food is better than this..... what happened???

Yelp
Cool casual bar-ish spot in the glamorous Vidalia GA. Gets v busy on Fri Sat nights for good reason due to to its appealing locale. Calabash shrimp was v tender, even for 'deep fried'. Most food fried btw, delicately and not excessively. Gots many shrimp dishes , all u can think of.. jammers, Poboy's, stir fried, .. .. I hads maybe the best lightly fried, tender, crispy, & lightly seasoned calamari at this local Vidalia stop. Highly recommend if into squids. Staff are v welcoming, busy, & attentive, Looking fwd to my next pass thru Vidalia

Yelp
Kool location nice people below average food and overpriced . Very disappointed! $37 steak greasy pan fried, plastic plate,1/2" thick . Philly cheese steak so salty could not eat. Prime rib over cooked.

Yelp
We have been staying in Vidalia while my husband is here for work. I knew about this place from when I youngest son played travel ball here some but never had a chance to try it so we finally decided to go for it. We went on a Thursday evening so it wasn't very busy. We got a table immediately. Our waitress was friendly. I had the catfish fingers and they were awesome. Best catfish I've had in a while. Hushpuppies were so good I asked for an extra order. We will be going back again. I would highly recommend.

Schinterria T.

Yelp
This place was delicious! The customer service was on point and perfect from the start. We ordered appetizers which were all so delicious and they filled us up enough that by the time we got our main entrees we were still full from the apps. This place is a gem and the environment was nice and family friendly. They were busy the entire time but never once did we feel forgotten. Just have a little patience.

Ronnie S.

Yelp
I almost turned around because the out front it looks like an abandoned steak house - this is not the restaurant! Off to the side and around back is a walk way to the woods, where the restaurant lies. It's a bar/restaurant that better at its food than the atmosphere. I was well pleased by the service and the food. I had the steak ribeye that had good taste and was cooked exactly like I ordered. It arrived fast. I would eat here any day of the week.

Yelp
Cool little place in the trees that definitely feels like a treehouse. They have some of the best food in town, especially the fried shrimp! It's usually very busy and pretty crowded, but that tells you that the food is very good! We try to eat here every time we're in Vidalia!

Bear G.

Yelp
This place has been a perennial favorite of locals for more than a few years, and for the life of me, I cannot figure out why. Don't get me wrong, none of the food is a disaster by a long stretch, but there is something about being served mushrooms, battered on Styrofoam plates that takes a bit away from the experience. And that Styrofoam experience will be part and parcel of virtually everything you order in the place. There is real potential here, hopefully by the time you get around to checking it out, they might have invested a few dollars in actual stoneware and silverware that floats somewhat above the "Spork" of airline fame

Yelp
Tonight we visited for the first time and it was a let down. The Onion Peddles appetizer was good but could have been a crispier. I had the catfish strips with coleslaw. It was awful. The strips, like the onion peddles, could have been crispier. I saw in a previous review about how salty the food was. The batter was so salty, I couldn't finish it. I love coleslaw- it came in two little plastic togo cups. Not the best presentation. It tasted like restaurant supply coleslaw. My partner had the prime rib sandwich, and the meat was good and not fatty. The homemade potato chips were nothing special and were not creole flavored, as advertised. In general, the Treehouse is just ok.

Yelp
yesterday I had the worst experience of my life. after a long day I came to what used to be my favorite restaurant. I ordered a Togo order at 8pm a waitress said they would text me when it would be ready. 30 minutes later someone sent ME a text that the food was ready. I came inside and they only gave the appetizers and no other food I ordered. we waited inside for them to "finish cooking" our food. the waitresses were dancing and singing/ partying but did not bring our food. I kept asking where the food was and what was taking so long but they said they had no idea. we waited all the way until 5 minutes before closing. we saw people that got there far after us get their food yet not us? after 2 hours of waiting we asked if we could get a discount. the women rolled her eyes and said the boss left and she could do nothing about it. I have worked in the food service industry and know anyone could have done something about this madness. we had to pay FULL PRICE for the food. when we opened the food it was completely soggy and cold. the service and food was terrible. my whole family lives in Vidalia and we will NEVER EVER come back here again.

Lisa A.

Yelp
We just moved to GA. My husband and I went there for our 25th anniversary. We had NO IDEA it was a bar by the name of the place. We were already there so we decided to sit down and eat. The food was disgusting. It was SO GREASY. We didn't even finish. We normally bring leftovers home to our 3 dogs. With all that grease I wouldn't even feed it to my dogs. Never again.

Yelp
Giving 4 stars only because it seems a bit overpriced but the food is amazing. The setting in the woods is pretty neat too.

Yelp
We had a party of 16 that ended up increasing to 21 and Kelby took very good care of us. She was busy and I'm sure ready to scream, but she never showed it. She always had a smile on her face no matter what. The food was great and service was outstanding. Look out Kelby, We will be back the next time we are in town!

Cindy W.

Yelp
It is so hard to find a decent steak unless you cook it yourself. My husband and I decided to give this place a try because somewhere I read about their prime rib being amazing. It did not disappoint! Absolutely amazing! I had the salmon which was also delicious. I definitely recommend this restaurant! Very cool vibe and staff is super friendly and accommodating.

Yelp
Such a cool place. It's less like a tree house and more like a building off the ground, in a ravine. TIP Friday was a madhouse. There was a line at the door before they opened at 530p so get there early and order right away if you can. Service gets a little slow and it's a popular place. You can park in the lot off the street and walk down the stairs or drive Around back. It's a little tough to find in the trees. Happy people. Great atmosphere as you can literally feel the building sway w the wind. The steaks are ok but the prime rib was off the chain. 4 stars due to slower service and missing food item that was requested and never delivered but all in all you should stop here while traveling through. #quirckyfind

Yelp
What a cool spot! You pull up, I went on a Wednesday which wasn't too busy, and I wasn't sure I was in the right spot... But there's a big sign out front and I parked and walked down the boardwalk to the "shack" on stilts. I was greeted by the super down to earth owner Michael. He proceeded to give me a hard time (in the best way possible) about ordering something to drink since I was by myself and sat at the bar and was told (by Michael) that their friend shrimp were the locals favorite choice. So I ordered a plate of twelve fried shrimp with a side salad and a blue moon in draft. The beer was nice and cold, served with a fresh cut orange slice... And before I can get too far into my beer the buzzer sounded and out came some HOT fresh fried shrimp lightly battered and crispy! They we're juicy, hot and the tartar sauce helped it go down even easier... The salad was fresh and crisp but a bit plain with just lettuce and tomato, it could use a bit of sprucing up... There were a couple of small yet tasty hush puppies that came along with it. And the atmosphere of this place is a riot, the owner is a riot and really enjoys running the place in a very low key, come as you are kinda attitude. Friday nights are apparently the busy days that is standing room only. And careful, they are only open for dinner starting at 5:30pm.

Yelp
Neat place. Atmosphere laid back and a little funky. Food was great and made to order. Waitress was very attentive. I was a little shocked at the low rating because we were pleased and will return.

Katie B.

Yelp
It was ok! Kind of loud. Needs a much better beer and liquor selection. Beer tap was kinda flat. Over priced
google avatar

Wayne P.

Yelp
The Tree House has excellent service and food. Atmosphere feels like home. The couple that run the place are friendly and run around like teenagers. The only reason it's not a 5 rating was small portions on the scallops but cooked perfectly.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
This place was exactly what I was expecting based on reviews. I was in town with co-workers, and we went here for dinner. The servers were very friendly, and the food was good. For the prices, the portions seemed to be very inconsistent (sandwiches were good, shrimp plate was large, scallop plate seemed small). The atmosphere was fun - nestled in the trees, you could hang out on the deck and have drinks. I would definitely return on a night for drinks with a group of friends.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
I came here with my wife passing thru. It seemed like it would be a novel experience to eat in a house built at tree top levels. It was just a house in the woods surrounded by trees at ground level, not tree top. Kudos to the marketing pics tricking us. We turned around and ate somewhere else so I can't speak to the food or service.
google avatar

Austin M.

Yelp
First time I've been here. I had heard a lot about it from some of my friends that had come down here to work at the power plant. Really good food and it's a cool place tucked back in some woods.
google avatar

Westt G.

Yelp
The shrimp on the poboy was over cooked, the Tree burger tasted more like a meatloaf not a burger the fries on both meals were cold

Yelp
We were in town on Friday night 5/17/2019 for a family members wedding, which by the way this place was catering the rehearsal dinner for so that's how we heard of them. Service was terrible. Not once did the waitress refill a drink glass, and the gratuity was automatically added to a party of 5 or more. I ordered the Prime Rib Dip sandwich with fries. The sandwich was cold. Sent it back to the kitchen and it was STILL served cold AGAIN!!!!!(Luke warm at best) Didn't need the Au'juice since the bun was completely soggy. The fries were completely soggy. Everyone in our party agreed that their food was barely warm except for the two children with us and their food was so hot that mom had to make them wait a while before eating. One of our party ordered beer. When the waitress came back with it, she brought the wrong kind and when it was pointed out she chugged the whole bottle of beer before our very eyes before going back for the correct beer. When checking out, she had no idea what anyone had ordered and we had to tell her what we had. I'm told it's a great place to eat normally. Just make sure the regular staff isn't off on a catering event before you order. Apparently when the cats away, the mice will play.

Sandra M.

Yelp
Good food and friendly staff. Will become a regular place to eat. The Bang Bang shrimp is delicious. I have not had anything that was a disappointment. Mr. Parsons was very accommodating when asked to add an item to the menu.
google avatar

Eve R.

Yelp
This restaurant has great food however they are never adequately staffed. We have made multiple trips to enjoy the food here, but the service is awful. On two occasions in the last two months, my family has left this establishment after having waited 45+ minutes on food.

Eli D.

Yelp
The atmosphere is good and the food is great. My wife loves the fried scallops and the prime rib dip is delicious.

Julia B.

Yelp
We got here at 6:40, and ordered shortly after arriving. Small party of 2, I ordered a salad with my meal and the wait began. At 7:50, we were told it'll be just a few more minutes. After 8pm still no salad and still no food. At 8:10 we asked the same waitress how much longer, she said oh 20 mins. I said you said 20 mins ago just a few mins, she said we have a large party what am I supposed to do about it? I said give my check for my drink. She ran back to the kitchen and our food miraculously was ready. The food we had it took maybe 5-10 mins to cook and plate. I waitressed for 6 years, I know how it is when crowded but if you can't handle crowds don't book large parties. 1 1/2 hour wait was ridiculous for a handful of shrimp, a thrown together salad, a handful of scallops and cold boxed potatoes.

Yelp
The Tree House is literally a tree house-- tucked away in the trees off of the highway. So that's kind of fun. The restaurant itself is quite dark and musty. I get that it's a bar, but it smells like stale cigarette smoke. Not very appetizing. The whole place, including the restrooms, could use a thorough cleaning. As for the food... meh. I've had the salmon and crab cakes, and they were just OK. We also tried the fried pickles, but they were disappointing. Too doughy and greasy. Others in our group had the prime rib sandwich. It was OK, but they've had better. The service is adequate; however, we will probably not go here again because of the food.

Laurie L.

Yelp
We have been here twice in the last nine months and sat for ten minutes without anyone even acknowledging us when we arrived let alone come over to bring menus. It used to be good but something happened to change it, maybe ownership, dunno, we won't be back again....

Sean L.

Yelp
I used to frequent this place whenever I was in town. This was many years ago and with the former owners. It was a great place to hang out, shoot pool and bs with old friends and the new ones we made there. It took a while to find the original place as it was a pretty well kept secret from out-of-towners. We only managed to find it as it started getting dark and people were getting out of their cars and walking off into the woods. We eventually followed and it started some great times while in town. We brought many a guest there after that. Like I said, many years have passed, the owners sold it and it went from being a quaint place to something a bit more. Some things should never change. My hats off to my copilot, Scott P., who spent many nights either dragging me out or me dragging him out of the bars in South Georgia after just one to many. Rock out, with your $@?" out! Sean-O

Will S.

Yelp
Fried zucchini and shrimp and catfish would have been really good except they severely over salted them. But otherwise a great place to hang out.. Really great environment. Waitress definitely over-promised, saying everything was excellent, but it was all so salty. But still a cool environment. Just way salty food. Tooooooo much salt. Unfortunate. Waitresses were sort of attendant, sort of not.

Kathy J.

Yelp
Excellent!!!! Great atmosphere, great service and fabulous food!!! The fried shrimp is the best I've ever had. Great appetizers, steak sandwich also one of my favorites. If you are in Vidalia GA...the Treehouse is a must!!!

Robert M.

Yelp
It's hole in the.... well, it's actually just a shack in the woods. But it is pretty awesome! I had what's probably the best steak in a 20 mile radius, and the shrimp are out of control! Coming from coastal Florida, it's hard to impress me on shrimp, but I'd eat these daily! Great service. Very very attentive, and friendly!
google avatar

Calvin M.

Yelp
Good fried food at good prices. Nothing sexy but a great place to hangout with friends or family.
google avatar

Dylan S.

Yelp
Love the food and atmosphere. Certain nights live music adds to the experience. Also enjoy the pool table.

Mike B.

Yelp
The prime rib is very good most night. The sad part is the service absolutely sucks. I sat for over an hour and no one would take my order. It looks like they cleaned house of most of their help. I known I will not be going back
