8 Portland Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes for Book Lovers | Eater Portland

"The newly opened downtown bar takes its name from the oldest of the Ents, the tree giants from The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien fans won’t find much else of Middle Earth in this offshoot of a Corvallis taproom, but hobbits would approve of its 36 taps offering beer, mead, cider, and root beer, as well as a bar snack menu with plenty of cheese dishes. Plus, the midcentury couches and armchairs are comfy enough to accommodate a lengthy Tolkien reading." - April Choi

"Treebeerd’s Taphouse is a new Lord of the Rings-themed pub opening in downtown Portland early next year. It will feature 36 taps with beer, cider, and mead, a cheese-heavy menu, and subtle LOTR references in the design." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Good beer and great service. I will be returning. As recommended by the bartender I had the pork tacos. Very good and a good price during happy hour.

Google
This place was awesome. The service was excellent! I like the setup with the seating, you can choose to watch TV or sit to the other side and not watch it. They have a large selection of beer on tap and the flight setup was nice. Will definitely visit here again in the future when I'm in town.

Google
Great beer selection in a cozy setting. Loose Lord of the Rings themes will make fellow hobbits feel at home.

Google
Can we talk about how freaking amazing this taproom is!? From the name, to the decor, the wide range of beer options, and the absolute gem of patrons that are here, I found my nerd haven in Portland.

Google
I found this wonderful taphouse completely by accident. I was out wandering and it started pouring, so I ducked into Treebeerd's Taphouse to get a cider, and to get out of the rain. I noticed some tables had flights, and the next thing I knew I was ordering a flight of all 6 of the ciders they had on tap! The woman who assisted me was so kind and patient! I also ordered a meat and cheese board, I realized while standing in line that it was dinner time on my jet lagged body, and the meat and cheese board was the perfect meal to accompany the cider. Everyone was so kind and welcoming, I had some awesome conversations! I will absolutely return on my next trip to Portland and highly suggest it for any beer or cider lovers!

We hung out at Treebeerd's for a couple hours to enjoy the brews and wait for a nearby reservation and had a truly relaxing time. The space inside was large and well decorated, with TVs on but not distracting. Tons of beers were on tap, and I appreciated that people could bring food in. Next time we're in Portland we'll be back to relax.

Google
What a cute place! Awesome beers, such great service, and while they do sell snacks they also allow outside food which is really cool with the options in the area. Felt like a bonus of our time because we happened to be kid free for the afternoon and they do not allow minors. Highly recommend, wish we lived closer!

Google
One of my favorite places in town to grab a cheeky pint. Great selection of brews and ciders (they even serve Ruzzo’s) - and a delicious mead on tap. Staff is very nice and friendly, place is always clean, and vibes are great. Tried the snack plate here once with veggies, hummus, etc and that was good too. Not many food options but they allow you to bring in your own food!

Yelp
This tap house wasn't far from the hotel I was staying at in portland so I decided to give it a try based on the concept; it did not disappoint. I guess it's a LOTR (lord of the rings) themed bar, however I didn't find it to be to "enthralled" with LOTR. They had some various LOTR posters and merch around the place, and there was a TV airing one of the movies -- but it really wasn't that much stuff. There was also a TV randomly airing japanese anime (that didn't have anything to do with LOTR), and I actually found the atmosphere to be more laid back and a nod to wilderness with the couches and plants rather than an hommage to LOTR. Basically what I'm getting at is that the ambiance is great and can be appreciated by LOTR fans and non-fans alike. As a beer fan I found they had some great stuff on-tap, I did a couple flights and probably had my favorite beer of the trip there -- the Matchless Whip Hazy IPA. The only downside is that the tap house operates on almost a pure rotation basis and usually only gets a single keg, in a one-and-done fashion -- never to bring it back again. That means if you find a favorite, you can't come back again for it. On the flip side, it's a cool concept as it will constantly introduces you to new beers. Very friendly and knowledgable bartender. If I was a local, I could definitely see myself making this my regular hangout spot.

Yelp
Treebeerd's is the Bomb(adil)! I've popped into Treebeerd's a couple times previous: once just to look around, another for a quick sample of the brews on tap, but last night was the first time I'd been able to spend any significant amount of time here; a mistake that will not be repeated again. The trappings of Middle Earth are on display here, but their influence is almost as subtle as the One Ring itself: if you're not paying attention, you might not even notice. Thus, Treebeerd's is suitable for all humans, nerdy or not, as well as hobbits, elves and dwarves! Now, I'm generally not much of a beer/ale/lager/stout drinker, generally preferring spirits over brews; fortunately for me (and people like me), Treebeerd's has an arsenal of awesome alternatives, including several ciders (the Vanilla Honey is incredible), mead, and even a non-alcoholic (boo!) root beer suitable for any Ent or Treant. BAARUM! I had a pint ("It comes in pints?! I'm getting one!") of both the said Vanilla Honey cider, and the Nectarade mead; both of them were light and refreshing, and went down smooth and without complaint from my picky palate. I realized later that night that I'd forgotten to eat anything; these two beverages ended up being filling enough to be a meal in themselves, with no feeling of bloating whatsoever, and leaving me with a pleasant buzz right up until bedtime! All of the servers were humble, gracious and welcoming, creating an environment of true Fellowship that would make Elrond proud. Although Tolkien may have long ago passed into the West, his legacy is Too Towering to be forgotten, and lives on in reverent homage here. Everything about my experience at Treebeerd's was worthy of a King, and I am sure to Return frequently to bask in its glory! Don't be a Smaug and hoard this place all to yourself! Light the beacons, and spread the word to all the lands of Men and Elves! Fly, you fools...to Treebeerd's Taphouse!

Yelp
Came here spontaneously midweek Shared a warm pretzel (the mustard was divine) and the cheese plate, also very good I did a flight of 4 drinks Favorite: #25 cellar series & #28 bananas on fire Pretty good: #16 Tierra del stout Meh: #26 orange zest golden ale Vibes are immaculate, service amazing Love this spot, will definitely be back

Yelp
Such a cool spot! If I lived in this area, I'd visit this taphouse all the time. It's a LOTR themed bar, but it's not over the top. It still feels like a normal taphouse, and honestly like something out of a TV show where the main characters hang out to unwind. I tried their mango cider and did not disappoint! The bartender was also super friendly, and seems like there were a few regulars there that he was chatting up. Really cool place with a really cool vibe, definitely recommend!

Yelp
Wonderful, engaging staff. Good selection of beer on tap.(They welcome *Untapped users here). Treebeerd's also offers wine and cocktails. Well prepared nibbles available to enjoy with your beverage of choice. Intimate, welcoming environment.

Yelp
What a niche find! Are you a fan of the LOTR franchise? Do you like a variety of local beers? What about Pretzels? This is the spot for you. The team behind Treebeerd have curated a very unique spot for downtown PDX beer fans. There are several different spaces to sit, and the bar is ample and a great place to chat or to meet folks. Fear not, LOTR is always playing on at least one television, so get your fill in. Try a few samples of beer before you settle on a favorite. For me, the winter IPA hit the spot and I was a superfan of this for the entire evening. A few friends went even more wild and mixed ciders and beers together to create their own version of a sour. It is neat to see how flexible the bartending team is, and, I can't wait to return. I didn't have a chance to get any food since I had already eaten, but, the menu seems ideal for anyone. Lastly, there is ample parking and transit nearby, and great bike infrastructure, so don't worry about finding ways to get here safely.

Yelp
Stopped in for drinks with a friend and enjoyed the visit. Got a couple beers, which were tasty though perhaps priced a tad on the high side. Interior was dark and had some Lord of the Rings decor - neat, but I felt like they could dress it up even more to really bring out the LOTR nerds. It was in a handy location downtown.

Yelp
I might be predisposed to some bias before even coming in here because of my interest in LotR, but I can confirm this bar does a great job paying homage to Tolkien lore. They have a great selection of brews and is spacious with a ton of space for seating. Happy to have stopped in here during my Portland trip.

Yelp
Elegant and cozy taphouse downtown! We caught the last few minutes of their happy hour, as we were stopping in prior to dinner. Good selection of taps, friendly bartender, seating for groups and for couples. Would return!

Went for the Lord of the Rings theme, stayed for the great beer selection, excellent bartender, cozy and warm ambience.

Yelp
Always enjoy coming by for a drink. The staff are all super friendly, and the setting is cozy and spacious. They have a beer for everyone here as well as canned cocktails and wine options. I appreciate the customizable flights you can make that look like a cool beer tree. Definitely worth checking out for a chill spot to have a beverage!
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
The choices of micro brewers is amazing. The servers are very knowledgeable on the different kinds. Very homey atmosphere! People playing cards and enjoying a beer. Will come back again
google avatar

Frank R.

Yelp
Great place, super cozy atmosphere and it's Lord of the rings inspired. The theme aspect could be elevated but it gets the job done. Great selection of beers and taps and wine. The staff is friendly and happy to serve samples.

Kenneth Z.

Yelp
Cool vibe, great on tap beers and Ciders. 10/10 Good customer service and great spot to bring group of friends.

Yelp
About as good as a local brewing watering hole can get. Treebeerd's is an edge of downtown mecca for catching good brew, good vibes and a good time. Seriously solid collection of brews on deck with more than a few of the Portland areas finest breweries selections. We happened upon this place while walking to get to some of the more established joints. We wound up staying and tasting a few of the selections because it just screamed sit down and relax, so we did. Highly recommended and well worth a visit, Treebeerd's is all that!

Yelp
As a Lord of the Rings fan, I knew I needed to visit this taphouse as soon as it opened. They have another location in Corvallis, but this downtown Portland location opened up in early 2022. Now I will say that if you are not a LOTR fan, still come check it out because this doesn't come across as a themed bar. It's not over the top, you don't have to know anything about LOTR to appreciate this bar - it's actually a really cool modern space regardless of your thoughts about the books/films. But there are subtle touches for fans, like the name, fonts, decor, and more. Outside of the theme, this bar has a large beer menu, knowledgeable beertenders, nice light bites, and just a really neat vibe. It's a great place for groups, whether you're at their booth seating or long live-edge wood tables. Happy hour is 4-6pm weekdays, with $1 off pints and $2 off food!

Yelp
A great location, amazing beer selection, friendly and nice laidback vibe for chilling after work with coworkers.

Yelp
So happy this place exists. If you aren't a LOTR fan, it would be easy to think this was a normal, slightly classy taphouse. But for those that know there are some little nods of the head to Tolkien such as the "Speak, friend, and enter" on the door. As for the beer, they have a lot of beer, I'm sure you'll find something you'll like. The only food I saw they have was a pretzel, but you're allowed to bring in food from wherever.
google avatar

Jaime E.

Yelp
Great beer! Very good snacks. AND they welcome outside food. How cool is that? We ordered the hummus and veggie platter. Surprisingly fresh and good. Food service ends at 6pm I think, but the Food Hall is across the street. Good for couples and large gatherings too. Nice seating. ps: A+ on the bathrooms. Clean & well-lit
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
Solid spot with very good taplist! They've got a lot of categories for their taps and their options in each were very solid. Super cozy inside with plenty of seatings. Not a lot of food option but they do welcome takeouts.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Coolest little spot ever! Great cider, beer and even wine. They have a list of cocktails as well as non alcoholic options. Outside food is allowed.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
Such a cute ambiance! They were playing great music, and there were even a few people able to read. Treebeerd's looks like they can accommodate big groups but still feels intimate. Large selection of beers and I recommend getting a pretzel.

Sujay B.

Yelp
If you want to sample Oregon's best beers in a fun friendly environment this is a must visit.

DartagnanTwain ..

Yelp
A pleasant, lightly-themed taproom space with a large variety of alcoholic beers, brews and ciders, with TV's playing the Lord of the Rings/Hobbit movies on a loop. Friendly and informative staff, and a fair happy hour discount on the few foods served. The dried fruits on the cheese plate were strawberries, quite tasty.
google avatar

Jim U.

Yelp
Congratulations on your first year! Enjoyed the beer and the LOTR ambiance. Happy hour starts at 4. Pretty cool place overall.

Natalie P.

Yelp
We just happened to come across this place while walking around by our hotel. LOTR is my favorite book and I love the movies so we had to stop by. Loved the ambiance of this place. They had LOTR playing on the TV's. Would definitely come back next time I'm in Portland.
google avatar

Ankita T.

Yelp
As a non-beer but an avid cider drinker, I loved all the cider options. For non-drinkers, they had a few options and also a kombucha. Kind staff and clean premises and bathroom. Would love to see more food options.

Mike W.

Yelp
Had a great time at Treebeerd's last night. Top of the line IPA, Hesse, and mango sour. Super crispy pretzels that where surprisingly soft at the same time. Fresh setting, clean environment, great staff. No good good options but they encourage delivery for your enjoyment. If you prepare for this, you'll have a great time.
google avatar

Debora B.

Yelp
So many beers on tap. Friendly bartender. Outside food always welcome. Chips only $1.50 and their pretzel looks great
google avatar

Kelly J.

Yelp
Awesome bar in Portland esp for LOR geeks. Great selection of beer and hard seltzer on tap! Allows outside food or two places deliver via internal app delivery!
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
Went to Treebeerd's last night to get out of the snow and it's a cool little place. It was pretty quiet when we were there. Lots of community tables and a good beer selection that you can check out on untapped. For food they only offered pretzels which we didn't order and instead just drank. They have a few TV's on the wall and one was playing LOTR to keep with the theme which was lightly displayed around the tap house but not too heavy at all. We had a good time and might go back tonight.

Brenda S.

Yelp
We found this place while visiting and walking through Portland and what a delight! They have so many beers to choose from and are very knowledgeable about them. The decor is beautiful and the music selection is right up our alley and everyone can enjoy. If you are near you should make it a point to stop in!

Jason K.

Yelp
This place is a LOTR themed bar, and they do a great job honoring the source material and serving righteous brews. Even if you're not a Tolkien lover, this place rules.

James C.

Yelp
Love this place. Good selection of beers, nice atmosphere, and friendly help. They could use a bigger food selection but what they have is good.

Matt T.

Yelp
Very cozy atmosphere to hang out and enjoy the ambience. Staff were great and there were many delicious drinks to choose from!

Alison K.

Yelp
Had a great experience here. Good variety of regional beer. Staff was friendly and helpful. Would go again if I'm ever in Portland again.

Renee L.

Yelp
Chill/relaxing environment! Great music always playing and friendly staff :') beer is always awesome and you can bring outside food in!

Janine K.

Yelp
This is such a cool bar. Tried the vanilla honey cider. It was so yummy. Wish we got there sooner to try the food.

Brett M.

Yelp
Lovely selection of beer on tap, and good food choices for some snacks. I'll definitely be back here, it seems like it would be a good place for a board game with friends!
