Trefzger's Bakery

Local landmark bakery, though it's relocated several times. Currently Trefzgers is operating out of a renovated historic building that once manufactured Glide Bicycles. Any type of bake good can be found or ordered. We bought a few Thumbprints, which is a shortbread cookie with buttercream topping, an apple turnover, and a blueberry Danish.

Unfortunately I hate to make this post, as I have always ordered my items with Trefzgers with an amazing result. These cookies, for my daughters 21st birthday event turned out terribly wrong. The taste was absolutely horrible, hence why so many were left and it looked like they just slopped on the white icing. Having paid extra for the design, which it was suppose to of been 1 big red ribbon on each.

An institution of Peoria. Will always be my all-time favorite bakery. Plenty of friendly staff to quickly take orders. Amazing smells when you walk in the door. Great selection of cookies, breads, cakes, and pastries.

Ran in to grab a cake for a last minute party we decided to throw. Staff was friendly, fast, and the cake was beautiful! The writing on the cake was spectacular! I just moved to Peoria and will definitely be back!! Thanks!

Very cool place. When you walk in it’s very open and you need to take a number to get service. This was a little unclear, but I figured it out pretty easily because of the big sign that says “Take a number”. I do wear glasses. I picked up my ordered birthday cake and my mom was swooned by the cannolis. We barely made it out of Peoria before it was gone. She said it was the best cannoli she ever had! The picture is just of my birthday cake, it was beautiful, and I was unable to snap a photo of the cannoli before it was annihilated. The other video is of the entrance before you reach the counter. Definitely recommend!

Best bakery I've ever been to! Delicious food. Great options that are completely soy free, which is necessary but often difficult to find for my family (their wheat and white breads, clover rolls, coconut macaroons, and cranberry scones are my favorite soy-free options). They also have very tasty veggie pizza, offered on Friday afternoons only! Do yourself a favor and order it a couple days ahead of time to get Friday for a great Friday night special treat. Reasonable prices, friendly people, and great atmosphere too. I met one of the owners and it was obvious how much he cared about the quality of their products and ensuring their foods/treats will taste the same now as they did 10-20+ years ago, so people can have that nostalgic goodness with dependable and consistently delightful flavors. I highly recommend!

Best cake ever!! My family bought me a double layer, chocolate, with buttercream frosting. I just finished it up and after a week it was still delicious. Frosting was amazing and the cake was perfect. It was reasonably priced too. This bakery knows what they are doing.

Trefzger's is one of those places where you bite into one of their creations and you immediately think "Ahhh I understand why they've been around since 1861". The thumbprint cookies are pure flames. I can't think of a single item that doesn't have the sweetness precisely dialed in. My only real nitpick I can think of is with the bread used for the pastries (danishes, cinnamon rolls). It's slightly too... Dry? Gluten-y? But it's not an overarching issue so it's pretty insignificant.

I have spent a lot of money in the past year, buying donuts and rolls. It is hard to get excited about them as the attitude of the employees is lacking. They don't care how long you have to wait while they chat about other things. I don't come to be ignored and I will return to be ignored. You will find you will get a better quality sheet cake from Costco and a fraction of the price. You really need to consider this, Trefzgers! Before the business you've worked so hard to establish goes away

Largest bakery I have seen! In town and tried it for the first time. Bread, Irish Soda Bread for St. Patrick's Day, cakes, cinnamon rolls, cupcakes, cookies and we bought 2 huge eclairs and a German Chocolate cake 1 layer round $48. Saving that for tomorrow. Friendly counter service. Nice layout.

Okay this is very simple. If you're in the Peoria area this is a MUST stop. Treats galore one better than the next You name it they have it. And if you have a sweet tooth that needs taming OMG it's the best. Stopped here while on the job and what a nice surprise. And be prepared because from the outside it doesn't look like a bakery and once inside your nostrils are blessed with great smells Stop in grab some treats and enjoy

It has been years since I've been to Trefzger's. Happened to be close so I stopped at their new location. It's as good as I remember. Their cinnamon rolls are amazing along with their danish and coffee cakes. You take a number and are served quickly. You can even get a treat and stay and eat. It's a great location. Coffee shop vibe with plenty of room to shop.

Fantastic old bakery housed in an old brick faced building. Worth a trip for the building alone! Service was impeccable, polite and super accommodating. Really nice and happy staff.They even dressed up the Halloween. The kitchen and prep areas open and visible , as well as the huge cold display behind the glass counter. Great flavor, ingredients, great variety and great care in packing your selection. I was in town for a dog show we get donuts daily . This was the standout place for everyone that tried them. I'd definitely be there almost daily if I lived by .

I came in on a week day to check out the bakery and get a birthday cake. The building is beautiful and the cases are filled with cookies and cupcakes and so many other items. There was also soup avaliable on the day of my visit. I was looking for bread but the selection the day I came mostly had sweet instead of savory types. I got a plain cake with some decor and it was around $35 dollars for an 8 inch cake which is very pricy and from a quality standpoint it was good but nothing exemplary. Having said that I will be back to try the cupcakes which looked like they had a great variety.

Love this place. They have everything bakery wise that you could need. There crème horns are a family favorite of ours

My first time ordering a cake, my interaction with customer service was met with patience and kindness! I appreciate the interaction as it was my first time making a cake order. Peoria's finest!!!

This is an establishment that is apart of peoria, as much as it is apart of my life growing up til now, it has lasted the test of time and brings excitement to anyone who hears about its arrival. This bakery is no longer nearby so i cannot buy from the case whenever i want anymore, but i will order this for my birthday, every party, holiday and celebration that i can afford to do so. Unfortunately now that i am sick, it will become harder, but i remember saving my money as a kid just to buy myself a cake on my birthday from here when it was located in a different location. Then it moved closer to where i lived and for a time while i worked during my last year of high school, i was under a lot of stress and pressure, so every bad day seemed so much worse, but it really does help to have something sweet when you're sad, clearly since was solved with a treat from Trefgers haha. This has a personal connection to my heart, but other than that if you ask ANYONE in town? They always say that THIS is the BEST cake anywhere. Truly an honored and well loved by everyone business ingrained into peoria culture. If you haven't been in a while it is definitely time! Stop buying "grocery store cheap cakes" and get some of the good stuff! Life is too short.

First impression is that it is a beautiful building, family owned business. Love the old buildings and the vibe inside is very fun - antique bikes, pictures of the building with the original company and water tower. Desserts have great variety. A little pricier but was very excited for our treats since we had heard so much about the various options. We tried a variety of donuts including cinnamon sugar cake donuts, cinammon rolls and the blackberry pie is amazing. Cons: hair in my pie (noticed after I had almost finished eating it =( and I have to say that our entire group had a pretty negative interaction with Brittany (shorter brown hair female-I believe that was her name). Guessing she is part of family that owns the business because I can't imagine an employer putting up with such a negative attitude from employee otherwise. Other than that, it is good and worth the stop if you are in area.

Expensive, but our carrot cake was wonderful. Publix in Georgia has a tasty carrot cake for 1/4 of the price.

Ordered cupcakes as a gift. Great selection of flavors including Apple Dumpling and Reese's! They customized the baseball one and have Happy Birthday toppers. Great service and low prices but steep delivery charge of $25. The gift receiver enjoyed all of the fresh treats. The bakery is large in a cool brick building that gives it instant history. Would love to try some next time I'm in town.

The staff at Trefzger's Bakery were exceptionally helpful and responsive when I called from over 1,000 miles away to request a delivery to be sent to my cousin and his family at OSF. Beginning with the automated answering system, which was warm and welcoming, Trezfger's customer service was apparent. (Today, such systems at many businesses are annoying at best). My thanks to Kailea, Rene, and all at Trezfger's for creating a package of deliciousness and delivering a little joy into the lives of my cousin, his family, and his caregivers today.

Love Trefzigers and will continue to go but the service we had yesterday left a lot to be desired. There were just a couple of other customers and they were already being helped and while I was waiting at the counter for service, the 2 girls behind the counter were just standing and talking to each other. I know they saw me waiting at the counter because I made eye contact with one of them, yet they still continued their conversation for a couple minutes afterward before coming up to me. My daughter had a question about one of the pastries and she asked one of the girls to help her but she acted very bothered by the question and pretty much blew her off. I had asked to have my 2 dozen cookies consolidated in a square box because it was a gift and had this done in the past but this girl was arguing with me that it couldn't be done and wanted to give me the cookies on 2 foam plates. She ended up putting them in a box for me but just gave me an attitude. I've always had very good service and a positive experience at your bakery but these girls were very rude and we walked out commenting how surprised we were with the service. Just wanted to make you aware

I ordered a two-tier carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for my son's 20th birthday and he said it was delicious! Ordering over the phone was easy - Lindsay was super sweet and took my order and also delivered it to where my son is staying while doing his internship in Peoria. Everything was perfect from start to finish! I highly recommend this bakery!

It's okay. The cakes are really yummy but why would I pay $50 for a custom quarter sheet cake when I can get one cheaper at Walmart or Schnucks?? Highway robbery prices on cakes.

We have used Trefzger's for all our bakery needs: weddings, birthdays, milestones. We always receive compliments on the decorations and there is never a crumb to spare. We've purchased cakes, cakes with fillings, danishes, donuts, pies and special occasion cakes. It's a must see and taste!!

Excellent coffee cake, and the potato soup was quite good. Great selection. Looking forward to returning.

That Simon Trefzger who arrived to the US from Germany in 1856 would be tickled a "strawberry cream pink" to see a customer like myself from Hong Kong in 2017 sitting in his family's bakery store with a smile on her face thoroughly enjoying her baked good treats. I grew up in a small town in Indiana and love small town bakeries. There is something authentic, glutenous and real about these places. If you live in a small town, you know what I am talking about. The Trefzger bakery started in Ohio before ending up in Illinois, but has been around since 1861. Clearly they are doing something right to be in business after all these years! Despite Trefzger's newer larger location to accommodate more room to bake and a bigger show room to serve the public (I never had a chance to visit the smaller original location, although in photos you can tell it was a piece of Peoria history!), this place is soaked into the same feeling as walking into a small mom and pop shop. Brick walls, wood floors, welcoming staff, fresh baked goods put out daily, warm bread/dough smell coming from the back. And the variety and assortment of stuff is extensive. There is something for everyone from cakes, cupcakes and turn overs to cookies, breads and coffee cakes. But be warned, stuff sells out and choices can be more limited later in the day. I was hooked from the first time I ever walked in, bought a pecan sandie thump print and a fresh cherry danish and sat down with a container of milk in their store. I have enjoyed bringing back to my folks in Terre Haute, IN their strawberry chiffon cake of the month this July, their blueberry coffee cake, a few turnovers and some bread. I enjoy going in when I am in Peoria, looking around, grabbing a pastry and a drink to sit down and enjoy right there to ponder what I am going to purchase to take home (there is so much good stuff to pick from, I have to pause to absorb it all!). Grab a number from their machine if they are busy the moment you arrive before you start looking around. Someone the crowd can be extensive, other times, not so much. I often bring home stuff and my folks freeze it. I have found most things freeze pretty well from Trefzgers. I also like that they recycle and have clean, welcoming bathrooms for guests. You can take the girl out of a small midwest town, but you cannot take the small midwest town nor the love of an authentic small town bakery out of the girl!

Honestly, I am sad to leave this review but I came all the way down from Houston to visit my sister while she graduated with her degree. We ordered a four layered white cake with tons of fresh fruit all throughout the 4 layers and on top with buttercream filling in the middle. We ordered almost the same cake before but chocolate last time. Now - As far as the cake, it was moist so that was pleasant but the taste wasn't there. It tasted like nothing at all. It didn't taste like their normal cake. Then on top of that the buttercream was terrible. It was like biting into a bag of sugar. Way too sweet and it was even gritty when you put it in your mouth. Overall it was very unpleasant for spending $113.00 for this cake only it to turn out the way it did. Now I can't reach a manager or anyone because they're closed... I will try again on Monday to see what can be done because it wasn't worth $113.00. Customer Service - the employee who took my order was awesome. Very kind, took her time to understand everything and made sure I was happy before she hung up and processed my order.

the cinnamon rolls were very dry and disappointing. i haven't had one since high school and i came back expecting the nostalgia of the cinnamon rolls i grew up eating, but there was very little frosting and i would hesitate to call them cinnamon rolls, it was more like cinnamon bread rolled up in a circle.

I was confused why nobody would look me in the eye or offer help when I was trying to place my order. I was literally ignored by one young lady. She could have easily told me that orders are placed on a number system. Nope. she decided to look me in the eyes and ignore me completely and walk away. I found many of the workers rude. I wont be back. I don't do rude.

We found out about this bakery through the food network while on vacation and made it a point to try it since we knew we would be in the area. It looks like an old factory from the outside. As soon as you walk in you are greeted by the many employees there. It's huge inside and they have so many good things to buy. They make everything in house. They sell things from pies to pizza pies. The smell is so good it makes you want to stay inside and just take it all in. We decided to try their cake of the month. Raspberry chiffon cake. It was so fluffy with the right amount of sweetness to balance the acidic in the raspberry. My mouth is watering from typing this review. We also bought a raspberry coffee cake just like the chiffon cake it was balanced the right way that you didn't miss any flavors. We can't wait to return and try their many other items on their menu. We all loved it so if you are ever in the area swing by this bakery. You will be so glad you did.

Holy Moley!!! BEST BAKERY I HAVE EVER BEEN TO. You first pull up to this gorgeous red brick warehouse looking building. Nope, it's a delicious bakery. Everything is not only beautiful, but utterly heaven. Absolutely coming here multiple times next time we're in town. Life changing experience.

Extraordinary goods and superb service! Great staff! Unfortunately, I only have one stomach. The sweets aren't overly sweet. Yet nothing is bland. The cream puffs are my favorite... so far... can't wait to try more!

My son was doing a virtual wedding in Illinois and I live in Virginia. I wanted to have a cake made for them as a surprise. I reached out to Martha and between the 2 of us, she designed a beautiful cake for the wedding. The couple was so surprised and said the cake was delicious. They are nature lovers and the tree like cake with the hedgehogs was perfect.

Great new location in the heights. Everything is always great. Got a birthday cake for my dad without pre-ordering and there was plenty to chose from.

They provided an amazing assortment of specialty cupcakes and thumbprint cookies for my Mom's 100th birthday. Everything went smoothly, which I can't say for other vendors used for the event. Every cupcake was beautiful, moist, flavorful and festive! I had no fewer than 20 guests ask where we bought the cupcakes. No need to be on the fence choosing this bakery. They will not disappoint!

What a great unexpected find in Peoria! My daughter and I wanted to buy some cakes for her Birthday so we pulled up yelp and off we went to Trefzger's Bakery! We found our cupcakes and they were delicious! So many different flavors! We picked six different flavors and they were all delicious. The bakery also sells breads, cookies, pies, cakes ect.

I love, love, love, Trefzger's cookies and small pastries. I decided to go with them for my wedding, even though I had never had cake from them. Turns out, my decision was an excellent one! I went in with a picture of the tiered cake I wanted and they duplicated what I wanted, perfectly! No complaints ever for this wonderful bakery

Being an out-of-towner made me sad. They have SO MANY things to choose from and I wasn't there long enough. Was able to try the frosted cookies and a pastry-delicious! Did stop before leaving and brought home a large danish and more cookies to share. Very friendly staff, too. Definitely stopping again if I make it back to Peoria!

I wanted a couple of dozen Christmas cookies. They were on the shelves in the retail area. I was in line and they helped others. I asked if someone would take my money and I was told I needed to take a number. There were 4 people behind the counter and all I wanted to do was pay for what I already selected. Well I didn't buy it. Why should I get out of line to get a number when the only thing I wanted I had in my hands. Guess they didn't need or want my business. I'll just make them myself and they will at least taste homemade then.

Trefzger's was a dream to work with for our wedding. Martha was very responsive and kind. All of our guests raved about how good the cake and cupcakes were! Thank you, Martha!!!

Out-of-towners and locals alike: I have your new go-to spot for cakes if you would prefer something that didn't come from the supermarket. We picked up a carrot cake birthday cake for a friend, and it was one of the better choices we made that day. One piece of the moist cake, sweet cream cheese frosting, and walnut coating around the edges of the cake makes you second guess if your favorite aunt brought it to the party. In short: Trefzger's is a bakery worthy of your calories.

THEM THUMBPRINTS. GAME OVER. But seriously they're so freaking amazing and I'm getting all my friends hooked. I also really love their turnovers. Everything I've tried here is good but the thumbprints esp the sugar ones and the apple turnover is my favorite!

I was very comfortable in this large, airy building with baked goods displayed everywhere. The staff are very friendly and there are many options to try. We went with a sampling of macaroons and thumbprint cookies, and I'm glad we did. Even if you're full or have had dessert at another bakery, you will still want to try these goods. While they are very photogenic, they are not too sugary sweet. They were just right. The macaroons were delicious, moist balls of coconut and the ratio of coconut to chocolate was just right. The thumbprint cookies had the right amount of sweetness and butteriness (is that a word?). They're exactly what we needed either for dessert or a snack. They have a great system going; you can browse or order and there is plenty of seating. Make sure to pull a number once you're ready. I guess there's a reason these folks have been in business for over a century!

Every time I go back to Illinois for a visit, I get up early, head over the McCluggage bridge to stand in line at Trefzgers. I MUST have their Danish Coffee Cake (strudel, really), and Pecan Sticky Buns. Everything there is amazing... the Pineapple Upside Down Cake, Thumbprint Cookies, Cinnamon Swirl Bread, Iced Oatmeal Nut Cookies, etc... This last trip was no exception. In addition to the usual goodies, I ordered a half sheet cake for my Gram's 80th birthday. Nothing but the best for such a special occasion! I think everything is extremely affordable, and dare I say cheap. Great value! Trefzger's is my family tradition, a Peoria institution and just like I always remember it. Get there early... and take a number!

We recently ordered a wedding cake through Trefzgers. We had requested a three tier naked cake. It was made clear with examples of exactly what we want and we were reassured this was something they could do. Instead of getting a naked cake, we were given a fully iced plain wedding cake. It was not what we requested and to top it off the icing on the cake was about an inch thick all around. In no way did we ask for anything that was complicated. Even by doing a google search you can find plenty of examples that show what a naked cake looks like. From the pictures uploaded you can see what we asked for and what was given to us on our wedding day. At best this cake was not worth what we paid and the main point of even having a wedding cake is for how it looks. Which clearly ours failed at even coming close. I would highly recommend either being very direct with what you want or going elsewhere. As well as double checking prior to your big day to make sure they did it right. We did confirm the day before, but received a cake that didn't meet our expectations or theme for the wedding. And we of course couldn't get it replaced because it was delivered hours before the ceremony.

This place is truly amazing. Love all their desserts. Staff are also super helpful and nice. One thing that rubbed me the wrong way was when I asked for individual containers for my cupcakes because they were for my students. The girl who helped us was friendly but she failed to tell us each container cost $1 extra. We found out at the register. We got over 12 cupcakes. If I wouldn't have known I would have gotten my own containers. Besides that this is a yummy desserts spot.

I have been a lover of Trefzgers for over forty years but was a little disappointed this thanksgiving. I had ordered a coconut cream pie always one of my favorite there, but sadly when I cut into the pie I had about a half an inch of the cream and three inches of the meringue. Please Trefzgers don't do what so many place do get less for more, I will be happy to pay more for more. Other then that you have the best bakery ever, have always taken friends from out of town to it, and they all take boxes of your goodies home. I will be back soon cant resist the chocolate eclairs. We wanted to visit this bakery for quite a while now... finally on our anniversary we went there and we wanted to try different cupcakes rather than a single big one... we had unicorn one, chocolate fudge, lemon and red velvet... unicorn one was too to pretty to eat honestly and all of them tasted amazing but still I have to choose one, I would go for the chocolate fudge one... that was tremendous

First off, I love love love their cookies!! Secondly, their cakes are also amazing in flavor, generally. What is not amazing is their problem solving/customer service skills if a problem occurs, which disappoints me greatly. Be aware, if you place a special cake order (meaning above and beyond a standard flower decorated cake) you will be asked to do several things- give a picture, specific directions will be noted and you can speak with a cake designer if they are working. Unfortunately, no matter your high level of communication, details and time spent working on a plan... it will most likely not turn out as you hoped. This is generally just the first blow when you go to pick up your not so good looking cake. The big blow is, you've paid a great deal more for said disappointment and no one seems to care that it isn't correct. That it is basic or sometimes at a lean or a number of other issues. This happened most recently when I picked up a cake that was supposed to resemble one giant rose - I left pictures, spoke with a cake designer, had notes on my cake order sheet, colors were specific, everything seem to be normal and I left feeling as though this cake was going to be amazing!!! When I picked up my supposedly amazing cake it was nothing short of a grocery store cake. The difference? I paid three times the normal amount. When I expressed disappointment I was given nothing more than a shrug and blank look. I asked what happen and they said that was what I asked for. Mind you, we were looking at a hot mess on a cake tray vs the picture I left them and unless this young man was blind, it certainly did not look the same. I hung my head low as I presented this birthday cake to my family member. We all ended up getting a good laugh and at the end of the day, it's a cake. But sadly- this cake kept giving badness. It. Was. Burned. I mean... so burned on the lower cake that it was dark brownish black and the upper cake was so dry it was hard to eat even with milk. YUCK. We did call to ask about this cake and what happened. We thought maybe a replacement would be nice if nothing else. I was on hold for 30 min and gave up. It will be a long while before I go back.

I love trefzgers! I have been going here since I was a child. They have the best frosting on planet earth!!! I always get the orange chiffon cafe, thumbprint cookies, and sugar cookies with lots of frosting and they are amazing every single time! The new location is nice also and the quality of the baked goods is just as good! The cakes are always beautiful and fresh. If I ever move away from this area, I am going to fly here at least 3x a year just for their amazing cookies. I think that I'm seriously addicted to their frosting and I really don't eat sweets that often. Now that I'm writing this review I'm probably going to have to stop in today because I'm starting to crave more. I recommend this place to everyone! Even if you don't like sweets that much, you have to try this place!
