Getting to the Heart of Rio's Brazilian Soul

"At Trégua Cozinha, just 13 guests can sit in this charmer from chef partners Ana Paula Souza and Victor Lima, which has an ever-changing menu starring such dishes as pork belly cooked in its own fat as well as hibiscus sorbet."

The 33 Best Rio de Janeiro Restaurants | Eater

"In the charming Laranjeiras neighborhood, couple Ana Souza and Victor Lima decided to open this small, relaxed restaurant with a gastrobar atmosphere and bistronomy-inflected menu. They represent a new generation of restaurants run by young cooks in the city who focus on food made with the best raw ingredients while forgoing designer furniture and luxury decor. Look out for dishes like pork loin with cassava and malabar spinach, or ginger flan with buckwheat and persimmon sorbet. With a lean team, they are only open from Wednesdays to Saturdays." - Rafael Tonon

Such a special restaurant in the heart of the charming Laranjeiras area, with lots of old colonial buildings. The chefs who own the restaurant and run the kitchen services with no help are incredibly impressive. They are exquisite chefs. The food was honestly outstanding. Every flavour and aspect of the dishes were thought out and each part consisted of skill and effort. The dishes were refreshing, innovative and the menu changes daily due to seasonality of produce. The waiter was absolutely lovely too - great service with exceptional knowledge of the dishes. Not one to miss whilst in Rio. Absolutely delicious

Incredible experience. The food served was superb. Strike a great balance for each service. Individual plates have great contrast and they change their menu every lunch and dinner regularly. The gems you always hope to find before they become so popular they are impossible to reserve within a month! Great experience! The only negative is the counter height should be cut in half so we can see them work their magic easily 😁 We will come back when we return to Rio! 🙏

How can this place not have a 5/5. I’m a food snob. Read my past reviews. I’m honest as can be. This was the best solo dining experience I’ve had so far. Not a single dish I have a bad word about. It combines everything I love about European food with the clear influences from Asia (given one of the chef’s backgrounds) with the fresh produce and superb quality meat and fish from Brazil. One could not have been made happier. Fine wine selection including stellar local and international wines. Yes, it looks like a kebab shop turned fine dining. No, it’s not where you should go for your 10 year wedding anniversary, unless you truly care about what you’re eating. I’ve eaten at places that have 1 star that do not meet the balance that the food serves here has. I’m blown away as a European by the new world.

Excellent food with French influence. Very balanced flavors that you don’t get anywhere else in Rio for that price. Loved the personal atmosphere and the personal touch of the owners/ chefs!

Loved sitting at the counter and watching the chefs at work. Small and intimate dining experience but worth it. Food was delicious

The food is divine! Everyone eats one of two options on a 3 course menu that changes daily. The food is prepared fresh right in front of you. The chef and staff are very attentive, kind, and explained what each item was. Best place I’ve eaten at in Rio de Janeiro and as good as the best places I’ve eaten anywhere in the world.

Tregua Cozinha is a small and intimate restaurant with 15 people capacity including a chef's counter for 7 people. It has a 6 course menu which changes daily and includes one bread, 2 vegetable plates and one seafood and one meat plate and a desert. There is a good selection of mostly natural wines and cheeses. The place is run by a husband and wife team of young chefs. The husband and a sole waiter speak excellent English and explain all dishes. Tregua is frequented by locals and needs to be reserved by calling or messaging WhatsApp a day or two in advance. They respond quickly and are eager to accomodate. The food puts Brazil in the limelight with expert technique, great locally soursed ingredients and friendly vibe. A rare find in Rio and a short Uber ride from anywhere, it is not to be missed by any food lover who wants to take a break from the rigid spectacle of haute cuisine but wishes to maintain the same or even higher food standards and not to spend a fortune. We loved our before and after meal strolls around attractive and safe neighhood full of local life on display.

My best dining experience in Rio! Very well crafted food in such a simple setting with very small menu using the freshest ingredients. I highly recommend Trégua and will be back!
