The 22 Best Restaurants In Milwaukee - Milwaukee - The Infatuation

"If this family-owned restaurant changed even a little, people would riot. It’s been open since 1956, and is one of only two Serbian spots in Milwaukee, with the other a little less than two miles west. Everything on the menu is a family recipe, like in-house pickled cabbage that comes as a side to roast lamb, duck, and goose, or the burek, which is the best we’ve ever had. It’s flaky on the outside, packed with flavorful meat and cheese, and takes a half hour to bake because, well, good things take time. The dim lighting, tiny space, and vintage floral plates lend themselves well to a date or dinner with just one other person." - kristine hansen

The food was really good. We visited at a slow time, so there was not much going on.

Tres Hermanos is always a great stop for authentic Mexican food for a low cost. The service is fast and friendly, and the food was nice and hot when served. I never had to ask my server for napkins or more water. He just anticipated my needs and was right on time. So, yes! Stop at Tres Hermanos for delicious food on a budget.

Visited the restaurant in Elkhorn. Had seen the crowds there when in town to go to other establishments. My Lady and I decided to check it out. The food we had was very good. The service attentive and rapid. The menu was large and a with great variety. It is a great value and the proportions were generous. It is so popular that the parking spaces available make you get exercise walking to restaurant. Family friendly and busy. Enjoyed the overall decor and atmosphere with my only negative being the frenzied pace. In spite of feeling rushed, it was a good dining experience.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: After a long but rewarding day, I needed some excellent Tex-Mex food. So where did I go? Tres Hermanos Restaurant located at 1332 W Lincoln Ave., on Milwaukee, Wisconsin's southside. While I have eaten there numerous times, I have kept this secret to myself until now. I walked in and was immediately welcomed with a big smile from the proprietor Ramon Orozco . I ordered a drink from their extensive bar and greeted some acquaintances before I proceeded to the dining room. I ordered one of their signature dishes, the "Tampiquena" ($19) and as usual, they knocked it out of the park. The dish includes a generous cut of grilled skirt steak, a cheese enchilada (I asked for onion to be added to mine), refried beans and Mexican rice. I justified my indulgence by reminding myself that it comes with a small serving of chopped lettuce with sliced tomatoes. It also comes with an order of corn or flour tortillas. I chose the corn. As I still had another event to attend, I asked the server if they could rush my order. In most restaurants this would mean my meal would either be undercooked, or utilize meat and/or other items previously prepared. Not the case at Tres Hermanos. The skirt steak was juicy and tender and seasoned to perfection. Too many restaurants over-season their meat to make up for cheaper cuts. The rice and beans were fresh and flavorful. No frozen or pre-packaged flavorless food here. And my enchilada was fresh with a perfectly flavored, authentic sauce. Even though I was rushed, I could not help but finish the entire plate as each taste was a personal reward for the days efforts. The environment is charming and decorated with authentic items and momentos brought back from Mexico by Ramon. Tres Hermanos offers both indoor and outdoor seating. Iff you are looking for a lively environment to enjoy drinks and appetizers with friends, or if you are looking to enjoy a delicious meal, Tres Hermanos should be at or near the top of your list!

We had Tres Hermanos Cater our Wedding at Dresden Castle in Cudahy. It was Buffet-Style. They did an amazing job. Everyone loved the food. Faustino and the other servers were very attentive. The Owner, Ramon, was very easy to work with and provided an awesome menu. Enchiladas, Fajitas, Birria, Chimis, and Ceviche were all hits. Our guests loved the food, highly recommend!

Yelp
Food is my favorite but the seafood can sometimes be close to spoiled. Generous portions. Great flavor! Great service!

Yelp
This was a random lunch spot from my list of bookmarks because I wanted a cocktail, margarita and some Mexican food. This part of town has so many real Mexican restaurants and if you want to skip the chains like me than just come to this area and pick a place because most places in this area are decent. With C19 the dining room was empty so I opted for the bar where people were socializing and eating. I started with a margarita on the rocks because I didn't want a brain freeze and I was served chips and sals. The chips are unique because they were warm and puffy with two sides and fresh/crispy. The salsa is not chunky but I liked it because it was hot and it kept me eating more chips than I wanted. The menu is surprisingly reasonable I noticed and it has all the usual suspects but I was going to order an al pastor burrito with a side of rice and beans when my server suggested the burrito dinner which is three mini burritos that I could have any meat in with rice and beans, $8 dinner is reasonable. The description small flour tortilla wrapped around meat so not a burrito at all so I asked for cilantro and onion and al pastor, asada and barbacoa which is pork, steak and shredded beef. I sampled all the meats by them self and the barbacoa had the best flavor followed by the al pastor and then the steak which had a nice beef flavor and seasoned nicely, I actually liked all the meats. With the cilantro and onion and topped with the sour cream the mini burritos were pretty good. The rice and beans were average and did the job. Overall my lunch was very enjoyable and very reasonable @ $15 for chips/salsa, dinner plate and a margarita with great service. I have to remember to go back for a full size barboca burrito.

Yelp
If you are looking for reliable, satisfying, and enjoyable service and food experience, then Tres Hermanos is the place to go! Every time I have visited here it has left me nothing short of a loss for words because of how delicious the food is... and how full of a belly I have from scarfing it all down leaving no crumb behind. Great environment for big groups along with smaller groups. The patio set up in the summer is to die for. GET HERE ASAP

Yelp
I adore Tres and have nothing but amazing things to say about it! The food is always unbelievably delicious, with genuine flavors that are nothing short of authentic. Definitely grab a margarita while you're there. The service was exceptional, and the staff always made me feel welcomed and prioritized. I'll definitely be revisiting every time I come back to Milwaukee!

Yelp
Yesterday, Friday, December 8, 23 I ordered a shrimp cocktail to go. The food has a sour bad taste and shrimp look white. This is the last time I order from this place.

Yelp
This is one of the usual spots we go to for group lunches during work. They are always prompt with getting the food served quickly due to limited time to eat. Pretty similar to most Mexican restaurants in the area. Food is decent, service is good. I'd give it 3.5 stars, half stars should be a thing on yelp...

Yelp
I have been going here( mostly the old location on National) with my Dad since I was 4 yrs old and the food has always been phenomenal! Hands down the best& most authentic Mexican food in Milwaukee! I don't even know where to start when suggesting dishes because they are all amazing! I'll first start with the chips and salsa, the chips are homemade and to die for and their salsa is something I crave regularly! It's some of the freshest, yet spiciest salsa I've ever found in Milwaukee. Main dishes? I suggest if it's your first time you try anything with the al pastor( seasoned crispy pork) not only are they one of the only places around that offer this traditional meat as an option but it is also the best taco/ enchilada filling you will ever experience, period! Then once you've experienced this amazing- ness I suggest you try their shrimp ceviche. It's the freshest most authentic tasting ceviche around and they top it with some of the freshest avocados I've ever seen a restaurant use! Also to note as amazing is their caldo de pescado(fish soup) I know this sounds peculiar to some, but it's an amazingly flavorful soup that is sure to clear up any sinus issues you're having. It's cured me of many a cold! I sincerely love this place and continue to travel here even though I now live on the East Side. There are so many over priced kitschy places over here, that I wish people would stop supporting. I've sat for over a half hour in traffic to come to Tres because it is simply the best & the prices are ridiculously cheap for the exquisite quality of food!

Yelp
I'll start off by saying that I had food from Tres Hermanos at "Mexican Fiesta" on the grounds where Summerfest is held. So I haven't actually been to the physical restaurant, but if the food I had at the festival reflects what the restaurant serves, I will never have to go to the real location because the food was THAT BAD. It was Awful to be blunt. I was attracted to the Tres Hermanos setup because of the relative large amount of people that were waiting in line. So I thought "hey, this place must be where it's it", boy was I wrong. It literally took 15 minutes to get to the front of the line to order, even though there were about 4 groups of people ahead of me only. This equals SLOW SERVICE. The guy that took my order was writing everything out long hand on the ticket. I thought that was a possible reason. It also didn't help that no one spoke english except 2 people ( and one of them was a 10 year-old boy that was handling the beverages). So I ordered a "Super Burrito" plate that included rice and beans and proceeded to wait by the pickup window. The 10 year-old boy put his hands inside my empty cup before pouring the soda into it. Okay that's pretty gross. Next, I watched as people who ordered behind me start to get their food while I continued to wait there. Finally, I had enough and told one of the ladies giving out food that I hadn't received my order yet and that I had ordered before all of these people here. She nodded and I figured I'd get my food, but NOOOOOOO she continues to yell out order #'s that are after my number. Total lack of communication. It's frustrating that they knew no english at all. She had no clue what I was saying. I was finally given a burrito plate once I had complained to the little 10 year-old since he could actually speak english. I knew something was wrong when I saw a lady yelling at the people that she wanted her money back and shoving the food back saying it was awful. Oh great, well maybe it was just a rare occurrence. The rice and beans were actually not bad, I was surprised.... this was until I found a BIG BLACK HAIR in it. Barf. The burrito was disguising. Literally couldn't eat more than a bite. It was bean spread from a can and burnt steak. The steak was half fat and had no taste. AWFUL. This is what happens when you use cheap ingredients. I wasted $7 on some rice with hair in it. Awesome. Save your time and skip this place. Yuck.

Yelp
Loved this place! Went with a few friends for a Friday dinner and didn't have to wait at all. At first that made me a little nervous (a good place should be busy, right?), but apparently this place is simply a hidden gem! We started with the margaritas and loved them. Upon opening the menu, once again I was surprised - the prices were wonderful and so inexpensive. All of us decided to order something different and loved every plate. The service was great, food delicious, and drinks perfect. Would highly suggest this place!

Yelp
I came in for a business lunch and left with a great first time lunch. I was meeting some business men on the south side of Milwaukee, they both suggested Tres Hermanos. I had never been there. I parked in the parking lot and walked in the front door. I was greeted upon entering and given a table right away. The restaurant was very clean and bright. The waiter brought me their specialty chips and salsa. I thought both were quite different than your regular mexican restaurant fair. I could of made a meal of just that. I had the buffet and a rice milk. I typically do not eat at buffets, but that was what every one was having. I had tamales, rice, beans, and steak(in a red sauce). It was delicious. I still can't believe I had the food from the steam tables. It was very fresh and hot. I will be stopping here again when I am on the south side of Milwaukee for lunch.

Yelp
We told them the margarita wasn't strong enough. So they upgraded us. No questions asked. The guac is to die for. Lovely meseras. Bandas y corridos playing. La perla what?

Yelp
Oh the power of a $5 bill on a Wednesday night... All you can eat authentic, delicious tacos with the perfect hint of grease! PS. Leave a nice tip, the staff is great! -See also, La Tapatia in Racine, WI.

Yelp
I stopped in late one night a couple of months ago. It was just ok. I ordered carry out but had a couple apps at the bar. The food was so so, not the best I've had and not the most authentic I've had. Hard to explain this one. Meats had little flavor in the tacos ordered, I preferred el sol in waukesha with steak cilantro and onion tacos (my favorite) So only tacos and nachos were ordered and not as good as many I've had. I hear they have a good lunch buffet. I may give it a try again but wouldn't go late night again.

Yelp
The food was decent for a Sunday brunch. Tacos were ok, nothing special but nothing to complain about. Now the bad: I ordered a soda to drink and we tried sitting outside. We ended up having to run inside due to hornets swarming us and our food. When we moved inside I needed a refill of soda due to the insects in my cup. By the end when we got the bill, I was charged for each refill of soda full price. My bill was blown up by some drinks I didn't even need or know. For that reason I subtracted 2 stars.

Yelp
Service can be a bit aloof, but I come here for the food. The margaritas a pretty good, even with the house tequila. Their coctel de cameron is one of my favorites in the city. You get a large goblet filled with lots of shrimp, avocado, onions, etc and a whole plate of limes, crackers & hot sauce to dial it up just how you want it. In the summer you'll often find me on the patio for a quick & cheap Friday lunch of two bean tostadas and a horchata. This place is my go to for inexpensive, delicious Mexican food. It's got a large patio and a decent amount of parking. What else do you need? Note: the only item I think is a miss is the ceviche. I've had it a couple times and wasn't impressed.

Yelp
Ugh. My friend was served rancid smelling lobster, when we returned it they came back and said yeah order something else the Lobster is bad. It smelled so strong I can't believe the cooks couldn't have known prior to cooking it. Won't b going back, the enchiladas tasted just ok, not what I'd expect from an authentic mexican restaurant. An all around bad experience.

Yelp
Just finished my work luncheon that was catered by Tres Hermanos. I have never eaten at the restaurant so I can't compare. We had a nice selection of Chicken and Beef Fajitas, Ground Beef, Chicken and Beef Enchiladas, Rice, Beans, freshly cut onions, tomatoes, peppers, fresh made guacamole. They came in and set up all of the food for us, and will come back to take it all down once we call and tell them we are done. All of the food was good authentic Mexican, not like the Americanized Mexican you get elsewhere, and they were easy to work with.

Julie M.

Yelp
I hate changing my review and two stars really is being generous right now. This restaurant's quality has decreased so much in the past few years, going here is a last resource when it's lunch time and no one in the office has any lunch. The regular daytime manager is the only thing holding this place together. The woman that works the bar during lunch is rude and screws up the same orders every single time. The food quality on standard menu items is just awful now. It's so disappointing - it used to be fantastic. We have expressed this all to the owner and the manager multiple times and still this continues.

Todd W.

Yelp
It's cold inside. The Salsa is way too soupy and way too spicy. Chips are served cold. They use imitation crab meat and don't state that on the menu. Food is served cold. Over cooked shrimp in soup also served cold. I could have gone to Taco Bell.

Mark M.

Yelp
The service was outstanding and they even let our puppy hang out at the courtyard on a leash. The food here is a mixture of super spicy and super bland. Overall I thought they were extremely overpriced for a south side of Milwaukee joint. We ate outside and were treated to local hood-rats screaming expletives and threats at a neaby street corner. But back to the food. The fajitas were not very memorable but were well prepared and probably enough to feed two people... the guacamole was home made and authentic, very nice... but the free salsa with chips was hot enough to burn through a bank vault. There was no mild. everything else was the kind of food you would find in Mexico. Nothing fancy. The enchiladas were especially tasty though.

Yelp
We brought 129 middle school Spanish students to Tres Hermanos as a part of a field trip day. Wow! The kids raved about the food and appreciated how respectfully they were treated. The owner/manager was great in accomodating our large group. Everything was ready when we came and many kids are planning to go back. The restaurant was awesome in helping us get all of the allergy and food precautions we needed to make sure all enjoyed there lunch and had no health issues. Muchísmas gracias, Tres Hermanos Shorewood Intermediate School Spanish Department

Yelp
Me and my wife went there for their grand opening at the new location. We ordered 4 tacos of the same type. They kept yelling back and forth between the kitchen and the waiters, after 5 minutes the waitress returned to ask what we ordered again. There were only 2 other couples there with us, and 30 minutes later when we recieved the wrong food we got up, payed for our drinks and left. Horrible service. Almost an hour of waiting. (Plus the food we had at the other location was not all that great anyhow)
