We saw Blues over an Alabama Sky and loved it! I'm looking forward to going back!

I bought my 14 yr old daughter tickets to see A Christmas Carol for Christmas this year. They were reasonably priced and I wanted to introduce her to the world of live theater. This was my first time at Trinity so I didn't know what to expect. First of all, the INSIDE LOBBY is beautifully decorated. You are allowed to purchase water, alcoholic drinks, popcorn, and they even have a hot cocoa station. I found the prices to be a bit high but that's to be expected. The Theater Area was small with not many seats, which I wasn't sure I would like at first. Kind of like going to a Movie Theater. But as the show began I found myself enjoying the smaller, more personal experience. It drew me in as if I were part of the play itself. The Acting was great and the Scene Design fit perfectly. My daughter and I had a wonderful time and would definitely visit again. I just wish they had more than a handful of plays per year

Google
I took my daughter to see La Tempestad and it was phenomenal! Shakespear with a touch of modernism and the cast was outstanding 😊 the theater wasn’t too big as well so we could get seats directly next to the stage it felt so immersive! We loved the experience! We don’t speak Spanish but it wasn’t hard to read the subtitles and still stay with the show! Bravo to the cast!!! ⭐️

Linda Sutton

Google
I agree with a previous post. I don’t understand why they’re using both English and Spanish. So confusing. Can’t concentrate on actors when constant having to watch translation screen. Costumes are fantastic, thus 2 stars. Can't understand what play is about. They should have disclosed the Spanish. Theater half empty. Maybe 3 Spanish speakers. Parking on Providence streets a nightmare. PARK- PROV.

Went here for the first time this weekend to watch Christmas Carol. What a great experience!! All the staff are friendly and helpful as you look for your seat. Great classic story with a twist. I chose a front seat because I’d never been but it’s a small cozy place with a great layout so there is no bad seat in the house! Highly recommend it.

Google
I saw the tempest this afternoon. It was a great disappointment. I love Shakespeare, but the dual language was very confusing. I watched the subtitles and missed the play. It was very hard to follow. If you want to present Spanish and English plays,do them on different days. This is the second and last one of this type that I will attend

Google
Lovely experience at the Trinity Rep this weekend. Went to see the Christmas Carole for the first time. Loved the traditional aspect of the play with a few modern twists. Very talented crew and several great laughs. Hope to go back in the near future to see another production. 👏

Sweeney Todd was amazing. First time at this theatre and we'll definitely be back. The intimate setting is such a cool experience

Yelp
On Friday, November 8, 2024 at 7:30 PM, I visited Trinity Rep's Dowling Theater on Washington St for the first time to see Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson - Apt. 2B. The online system at https://www.trinityrep.com/attending/buy-tickets/ was easy to use to purchase tickets. The lobby opens one hour prior to the performance. Seating begins 30 minutes before the show begins. Trinity Rep is a beautiful theater and located right in downtown Providence. The staff scanned our tickets, showed us to our seats, and handed us a program. Our seats (Section C - Row:B - Seat:105 and Seat:106) were great and up close, but it looks like there is no bad seat in the theater. The seats were very comfortable. The program had a lot of great information about the show, upcoming shows, and about Trinity Rep. The show was about 2 hours and 30 minutes with one 15-minute intermission. Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson - Apt. 2B was an amazing show and I would recommend everyone to see it.

Beautiful architecture, amazing performance, very kind service and very friendly staff, we absolutely enjoyed our experience! We will always go back and check out more shows.

Yelp
Favorite place to see a play. Had season tickets when we lived in RI and really miss it. When I realized I'd be in RI and they were doing a Christmas Carol I had to get tickets. Wasn't disappointed, play was well done and really enjoyed it. Great way to start the holiday season!

Yelp
I remember going to Trinity Rep for a play on a field trip a very, very long time ago. Therefore, it had felt like (and been) ages since I had walked through the theater doors on my most recent visit. As with many Rhode Islanders this time of year, I went to see their annual performance of A Christmas Carol. Communication from the theater leading up to the event was insightful. I knew exactly what to expect for parking, arrival, open doors, masking requirements and the like. The staff were equally informative. There are a couple sets of stairs that lead up to the theater but know that there is an elevator if needed. You just need to ask. There is a small concession area to enjoy while waiting for the show to begin. No food or drinks in the theater itself but if you plan some downtime you can take a seat near the oval that overlooks the entrance downstairs and watch the patrons roll in. I enjoyed the performance; the 2022 production had a number of modern elements to it which made for something new and different (though I do feel like the nostalgia I thought I might experience escaped me which I was a little disppointed about). The shape of the theater means there really isn't a bad seat in the house. Seating is comfortable and spacious. There is a parking garage next door if you don't want to fight for street parking. That means paying a pretty penny and waiting in a lengthy line to exit when the show is over. Not something I'd want to have to deal with all the time but not terribly annoying for a special occasion.

Yelp
What a great night at the theater! It was my first time at Trinity Rep. The theater is on the smaller side and very intimate. Not a bad seat in the house! We went to see Sweeney Todd. Great production and amazing experience. The actors made it interactive and it was fun to have the actors moving up and down the aisles. The location is great as well being close to many great restaurants & bars. Will definitely plan to be back.

Yelp
Trinity Rep was founded when a small group of Rhode Island citizens sought to create a professional resident theater company in Providence. Incorporated as "The Foundation for Repertory Theater of Rhode Island, Inc." on March 21, 1963, the group hired Adrian Hall, a New York-based director originally from Texas. At Trinity United Methodist Church, located in Trinity Square, the first production The Hostage by Brendan Behan, opened on March 14, 1964. In 1968, Trinity Rep performed at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland, the first American theater company to do so. The company received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theater Company in 1981, produced four television productions for PBS, toured India and Syria, and has a strong commitment to the development of new works. The Trinity Rep Conservatory opened in 1977, serving as a training ground for actors. A partnership in 2001 between Trinity Rep and Brown University created the Brown/Trinity Rep three-year MFA program for degrees in theatrical arts for actors & directors operating along with the MFA playwrighting, it has emerged as one of the nation's best theater conservatories continuously ranked top 5 schools with NYU, Yale, Juilliard and ACT. Trinity Rep is a non-profit regional theater. The theater is a member of the League of Resident Theatres. The theater presents a balance of world premiere, contemporary, and classic works, including an annual production of A Christmas Carol, for an estimated annual audience of 110,000. In its 52-year history, the theater has produced nearly 67 world premieres, mounted national and international tours and, through its MFA program, trained hundreds of new actors and directors. Project Discovery, Trinity Rep's pioneering educational outreach program launched in 1966, annually introduces over 15,000 Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut high school students to live theater through matinees as well as in-school residencies and workshops. Every play that I attend is full of passion, great acting and supportive staff. Due to the pandemic, the bar and snacks area are still closed, but you can bring your water bottle and refill as needed. They have accessible restrooms. Trinity Rep offers a series of accessible programs and offerings to meet the needs of the theater's diverse audience. Tickets for open captioned performances and sensory-friendly performances are available for each production every season, and even come in subscription packages. The quality of the productions are top notch! Parking for the performances is available at a nearby garage or street parking.

Yelp
2024 A Christmas Carol, nope a woke peace of crap! This just totally sucks and spits in the face of tradition. Don't waste your time or money awful!

Yelp
What a beautiful structure, with a stained glass dome upstairs and comfortable seating in both theatres. The company is known across the country as one of the USA's premier repertory troops, and little Rhody is lucky to have it here - professional costume and stage designs, professional actors some of whom move between Trinity and "larger" acting jobs in movies or other live theater companies. You'll also see Trinity Rep actors pop up in other local theatre productions from time to time. We saw the Prince of Providence this visit, and it was such a kick to see the theatre itself become almost an actor in the play, a take on the colorful political career (or at least part of the career) of Buddy Cianci. Whatever you see, be certain to consider going to the Prologue, a 1/2 hour talk scheduled an hour before show time. You'll hear the background of the production (without spoilers) and that can deepen your enjoyment of the play you'll see. Season subscribers can even have a quick dinner delivered to the venue to eat in the 1/2 hour between the Prologue and the start of their show. Oh, yeah, don't miss the annual update of A Christmas Carol!

Yelp
Beautiful building. Not a bad seat in the theatre. The seats are roomy and you have plenty of leg room. Love it!

Yelp
This was the 3rd time in my life I have been to Trinity! And I am sure other Rhode Islanders would guess the other 2 times were for A Christmas Carol... And you would be right.have to say really impressed! The theater is exactly as I remember but the singing was top notch. The costumes aren't shabby. The set design was phenomenal for a small theater! And general use of the stage was amazing! I saw Little Shop of Horrors. The actors did a wonderful job. Really got into charachter. Didn't skip a beat! I was wondering how they would make Audrey 2 grow... The props were superbly done! I would highly suggest this show. And now... I will have Trinity on my radar for other shows!

Yelp
We have been going to A Christmas Carol at Trinity Rep for 6 years and look forward to this tradition every year. We have always spread the word and have brought a group of 20 to 30 people every year. NEVER AGAIN. The performance made a mockery of A Christmas Carol. The staff were rude and distracting. Normally I don't complain about the cost of food and drink, but at that price, you'd think you'd at least be able to enjoy them during the performance, which was not allowed. It was a painful performance to watch and terrible experience all around.

T L.

Yelp
Complete disappointment! This is a classic story that is completely ruined, Dialogue in Spanish and Chinese food for a Christmas dinner. No staff , no props no direction! I can't believe they allowed this to happen. We deserve our money back, truly sad.

TjMartineau ..

Yelp
Feel like the theatre is kinda rundown. Location is great. Shows have been rather boring this season.

Steven S.

Yelp
My wife and I had been subscription patrons for over 20 years and loyal supporters of the theater's annual fund raising. Trinity has lost its way and is drowning in woke. RIP

Debra A.

Yelp
Went to see The Christmas Carol 2022....not a show that you want to take your children for there 1st theater production. Very confusing!! How is a child suppose to read words on a screen because Bob Cratchit is speaking Spanish?!? Should warn people that this is not the classic production...wasted money! Leave the classic shows alone Trinity

Yelp
Went to see A Christmas Carol and wanted to walk out of there the moment I walked in. The staff- especially the woman with short red hair - were rude, unfriendly, and unreasonable when asking us to keep our masks on while we were drinking their overly priced drinks on the bar area. Seriously, why sell drinks then? It's not like we can bring it in to the show anyways. The acting and the whole show was terrible. I understand that they like to add a little spin every time, but this year it seemed like everything spun out of control. I wasn't sure if I was watching a Dickens' novella or a woke mockery of it. They should offer a refund. Next year I'm going to another local theater that puts on better and real Christmas shows.

Glenn S.

Yelp
went to Trinity Rep to see Christmas Carol. The performance was terrible To pay $80.00 per person including a young child to see a gray stage and bed was pure garbage. It obvious Trinity Rep has just turned into a money grab. Will never step foot it that place again.

Yelp
I have seen a Christmas Carol at Trinity so many times I can't even count them. I have enjoyed every single one without exception. But I have to say that this was probably the most meaningful rendition that I have seen. The theme of history of slavery in Rhode Island was very poignant and appropriate to the time. It's a part of our history that we are not particularly proud of but in it's time it is what created Rhode Island in many ways. So we acknowledge it but don't celebrate it. I'm always amazed that they managed to make a Christmas Carol be different each year and yet always good. I would like to applaud whoever came up with this theme because it really moved me. I also want to say that the gentleman who played Scrooge was the best Scrooge that I have ever seen on stage or on screen. He really lived the part and it came from him in a way that was so meaningful. Absolutely terrific. I saw the green cast and I would recommend to anyone to go see the show and make a part of your holiday tradition.

Marisa R.

Yelp
Second year in a row the performance of A Christmas Carol we planned to attend wad cancelled due to COVID. So disappointed. I have taken covid very seriously over the past few years, but at this point would hope the company would be able to figure out how to accommodate for sick cast members and not have to cancel a performance. Have been trying to make this a family tradition with my son and his grandparents as I absolutely loved going to the performance as a child, and have enjoyed many other plays here throughout the years, but we are ready to give up on the idea.

Yelp
Trinity Rep has always been such an amazing place of theater ! I've been coming here since I can remember , seeing plays with my schools and then with my family. Every year for the last 5-6 years my family and I see Christmas Carol on Christmas Eve and it just gets better and better. The staff are absolutely amazing they're so sincere and professional and you can tell they take amazing pride in where they work. The place itself is beautiful so clean and welcoming and it just feel so cozy. It's in the center of downtown so you will have to park on the street if you find parking or in the parking lot right next door usually costs 10-20.00 for the night. The actors are all locals of Rhode Island and they're amazing and great at what they do. I admire them so much! They put on the best shows I have ever seen , so much passion and joy for life. The sets are amazing and beautiful , they always make sure no matter where you sit that you will have a great seat from the bleacher seats to the front row everyone gets great seating. The ushers are super helpful and never let you just wonder around lost. They do have drinks that you can buy while waiting, they have tea , alcohol , soda and they have snacks such as cookies and pretzels , small items that won't make a mess. One thing I do love about this place they won't start the show until 99.9% of the people are there and in their seats to not disturb the actors and the people viewing the show , I do enjoy that because interruptions are always annoying. If you haven't been here you have to.

M G.

Yelp
My previous review was removed because I mentioned the mask wearing (I think they are just getting Yelp and FB to remove anything that is honest). After being a lifetime patron I'm just bummed. It's hard to have something you look forward to as part of your Christmas tradition just be so politicized with angry and rude staff and a show bastardizing the Christmas Carol. I did send the manager an email. Continue to give feedback in every outlet or else this will be the new norm. Rude staff, no costumes or props, cratchet family only speaking Spanish and the final scene a dinner of Chinese food. No thanks.

Stu S.

Yelp
Where do I begin. I've been going to the Trinity Rep's Christmas Carol for over 25 years. I brought my children there when they were old enough and we have gone almost every year since. A classic holiday show that we made a tradition every year. A great small theatre, not a bad seat in the house, and the stage changed every year which was always so interesting to see. Keeping the same story yet the stage was completely different. Great actors, amazing and timely costumes, holiday songs that really invoked a holiday spirit and kicked off the holiday season in the best way. Over the years there has been a slight change in the characters where they have changed the character of Scrooge to a female which was ok, but I always wondered why? Why change a classic story? So this year, I wanted to bring my sons and their girlfriends as a gift and as tradition. I thought the pricing was a bit high this year but I figured ok, inflation, it's a classic story and it was my gift to my family. $95 per seat! I feel robbed and honestly, would love a refund. As the show started, the costumes and choreography were so far from the story, we thought we were watching the wrong play. I felt bad for bringing my family and spending all of this money. Everyone dressed in white jumpsuits and legwarmers? Also, we all had to wear masks and the entire CAST wore masks too! What? When there was a show during Covid, the cast did not wear masks? Their voices were muffled, the singing was also muffled and so hard to understand. What else could you do to make it worse? And why the cast? In short, they could not have changed this show any more from the original story. I can understand trying to "modernize" the play, if you want to but why? A female scrooge and Marley? A female Tiny Tim? The ghosts from the past present and future we're bland and where was the intensity and horror that has always been portrayed during this part? Why was the need to change this classic story so much? The stage was as basic as basic could be. They changed Tiny Tim's family to a Spanish family and projected the subtitles to a screen? One of the parts, the subtitle did not project, making everyone wonder what they were saying. Scrooge's nephew was in a same sex marriage. I have nothing against our modern world, but why change this classic story to match today's world? It should be set back in time, how we are used to seeing this story. I honestly wanted to walk out and I apologized to my children afterwards. What happened to the classic message the story tells. What happened to the wonderful costumes and amazing singing that really hit home? Snow falling at the end, everyone in the audience standing and singing along. Instead, there were empty seats, nobody stood at the end, and no standing ovations, like we used to have in the past. Utterly disappointed in so many ways. I will most likely look to another theater (and so will my family and friends) that will have the classic Christmas Carol in years to come. Sad.

Yelp
I went to see A Christmas Carol and it was such a wonderful production. The stage was unique for performing plays there. I would recommend my friends and family to see plays at this wonderful theatre.

Yelp
So glad I decided to take Trinity Rep up on the great offer of a subscription for 6 shows off center seats for $114. The first 2 shows were phenomenal! Beouwolf as a musical comedy was hysterical! Tonight's performance of appropriate, was exactly what theater should be. Thought provoking, intense with just the right amount of levity! The cast was superb. Can't wait to see what the rest of the season has to offer. As for the off center seats....love them!

Mary Q.

Yelp
Went to see A Christmas Carol where my daughter had the opportunity to be one of the carolers. What a fun experience for her. The show itself was awesome. Scrooge was such a great character. The actors all played their parts well. Fun special effects. Very pleased. The theatre itself is small. Not a bad seat there. Expensive but worth it. Not many food and drink options but that's ok. Get a drink before...and after the show instead!!!

Yelp
FYI be warned if you spend the big money on tickets for A Christmas Carol at Trinity Rep in Providence you may be disappointed with a newly revised version of the classic. It has been a holiday tradition with my family which has sadly been politicized to meet a progressive narrative. Don't waste your time and money, skip the production this year. Hopefully the Traditional production will return next year. Sad really. Not sure Dickens would be happy with the changes.

Marlin M.

Yelp
This production was by far the most disappointing I have gone to. My family and I, a teenager, have been going since the day I remember, and I have always enjoyed this tradition every year. This year, I did not know what I was watching. Im not into reviews but I thought I could help folks save their money this year. I was confused, never knew what part of the original version I was at, half of the show was written in spanish?, the last dinner was chinese food (they brought out an iphone and speaker), there was no effort put into the props or set. I honestly sat there laughing with many other people I had not even known. You could tell everyone was in awe, picking up their bags and leaving, rubbing their foreheads. I wish I had watched the Christmas Carol, not a completely different production. If there had been notice that this play was not going to be original once so ever, then maybe there would not be such an issue. There is no Holiday spirit when you feel as if you've been played. I have always loved the acting, i will give a 10/10 there.
google avatar

Paco T.

Yelp
The Christmas carol was complete garbage. Whoever did the staffing was more worried about being as diverse as possible than hiring good talent. I'm all for diversity, but when you are purposely hiring based on race and gender then your being racist. I like the little twists they have done in the past, but this is tasteless. If a writer discribes a character, it's for a reason and that's what you should get for the most part.

Yelp
We must be getting old if we would rather spend time watching plays and relaxing than partying on vacation :-). We were planning to be in Providence during our recent vacation to Rhode Island and decided to catch a play at the Trinity Repertory Company. We saw John Steinbeck's classic The Grapes of Wrath, adapted by Frank Galati. We booked our tickets online and had a seat behind the bar in section B. The theatre is quite small and every seat has a pretty good view of the stage. If you're seated at the very ends of the row behind the bar, you might miss some of the action because of the pillars. The stage was quite small, and I was wondering how the actors would be able to portray the scenes without much use of props/background. The Grapes of Wrath included a 17 member cast and original folk-rock music from the band, 3pile. The actors were good, especially Stephen Thorne who played Tom Joad. Trinity Rep's annual production of the holiday classic A Christmas Carol gets great reviews. The tickets range from 25-60$, they have a several discounts for senior citizens, students, firefighters/police/EMS. The theatre is located in downtown Providence. There's a parking lot next to the theater and limited parking on the streets. We parked in the Providence Place mall and walked over to the theater (around 8-10 min walk). The concession stand at the theater sells drinks and some food items. Restrooms are located on the lower level.

Yelp
My family and I have officially begun starting a new tradition it seems and Trinity Rep is the star! Last year, for the first time, my father, brothers and I all went to A Christmas Carol in Providence at Trinity Rep. I have seen a lot of performing arts over the years in various locations, but I have never been to Trinity Rep, in fact, I never heard of it until then. I have to say since that time and this year, I can happily say it is a wonderful place to go! Trinity Rep is located about a block over from the convention center which makes it (almost always) easy to find available parking and then take a short walk. It is a small and cozy theater which I happily enjoyed! Typically I find myself in large theaters with huge crowds and though the play is usually wonderful the sometime the seats are not always "the best." At Trinity Rep, it is honestly hard to imagine not having a good seat. It is a small, compact theater where you are up close and personal with the stage and actors making it a wonderful experience for all ages! This year, we once again saw A Christmas Carol and though I will admit I enjoyed last years a little bit more, it was still a fantastic show! It was clear from the start that all the actors knew their lines perfectly and with small productions sometimes you never know how well a play may turn out. Well, have no worries if you ever attend a show here, they are professionals in every sense of the word! Not only are their acting skills suburb, but the set and the costumes are beautifully done as well! Due to a large event on the night we were attending this event, my family and I were actually almost 20 minutes late because of such heavy traffic and almost no parking. We were all worried we were going to miss it entirely but we were finally able to get seating. Thankfully, because a lot of people were having difficulties arriving on time and finding parking, Trinity Rep actually delayed the play 40 minutes in order to give people more time to get there. I have never had a performance company ever do that and I am glad Trinity Rep was aware of the complications with traffic and easily allowed people extra time so that they wouldn't miss the show! Typically there is one intermission which we are allowed to stretch our legs and grab a drink of light snack. They serve beer, wine and various liquors as well as coffee, tea, water and a few snacks (cookies, brownies, pretzels etc.,). After the show a two of the main performers came out to talk and even take a few pictures! Which I naturally made my brothers take with me! Overall, this is a great place to attend any show or play and I will happily attend more events here in the future!

Yelp
Just went to see A Christmas Carol at Trinity Rep. Well Done! I was impressed by how intimate the seating was- I was in the second to last row, and I don't think I was 40' from the stage! Not a bad seat in the house, so I don't think I would spend the extra $$ for "Premium seats", since everyone had an equal view of the action (with the exception of the first couple rows-some of the play actually took place behind them! Not my idea of a good seat, even if they are the most expensive). I was impressed by the interpretive twists they took on an old classic-I have never seen that play done quite that way, and I really liked the "improvements". The acting was superb, the special-effects and lighting were great! A top-notch performance. Well done!

Yelp
Nice little spot to watch a play. Not a bad seat in the house. Good acoustics. Only complaint is that the seating is a little tight...very little room to move through the aisle if people are in their seats; you have to make everyone stand up & lean back for you to pass. They serve alcohol, soda, & water pre-show & at intermission. I didn't notice any food. There are a lot of stairs. They do have an elevator though. I always pay attention to things like that because not too long ago, I was unable to climb stairs.

Yelp
10/15/2017: Here to see "Death of a Salesman" in the newly remodeled Dowling Theater (downstairs). New seats, more comfortable and very intimate theater experience. Trinity continues to deliver. Thank you!!

Yelp
Trinity Rep is an amazing not frills small venue to see amazing performances. My first experience was seeing "The Dublin Carol" starring William Peterson from CSI! It was a pleasant surprise as there is not a bad seat in the house. It was also my first time seeing a play with only two people acting and it was absolutely brilliant! I highly recommend Trinity Rep!

Celina T.

Yelp
Giving this review one star was generous! After 12 consecutive years of attending the Christmas Carol, my family and friends (9-12 of us) throughout the years, will no longer be attending this play. To say the least, this years performance was horrible. The set was poorly designed, Scrooge's bedroom was unable to be seen from where most of us were seated. In an effort to push the current "woke" narrative, this amazing classic was interpreted and pieced together so poorly that the beloved story was lost in the muck of it. The producers should be ashamed of themselves. LEAVE THE CLASSICS ALONE!

Yelp
Little Shop Of Horrors was hands down, one of the very best shows I've seen at The Rep! The comedy, timing and accentuation of certain localized stylings was a real treat! Kudos to the entire Enssmble for setting up the leads, so wonderfully ! Audrey really shined with subtle intermittent flourishes reminiscent of Ellen Greene... but more than blew it away with her shimmering vocals. Orin... oh Orin! At times I felt like Steve Martin would jump at me... but what made me laugh the whole time was the vinyl/pvc dentists costume! truly an accomplishment of reinvention for campiness! Seymour was fantastic and cast perfectly! Selfishly, in any production, I always want to see a stronger vocal performance from Seymours character ( understanding that's not the point) , but his timing and acting more than made up for it! Crystal, Ronette, and Chiffon were absolutely fabulous! Their written purpose in the script was split at the seams and delivered so much more! Bravo! And of course... Audrey II and the plant. What is there to say?! I really appreciated her soulfulness and edgy rock rasp in her vocals and seducing body language made this a perfect stage production for me. Bravo to all involved ! One thing I do wish they would make a priority is, better training their volunteers, employees and ushers on how to best assist people with disabilities. It is really uncomfortable to accompany a loved one in a wheelchair when being received by staff that are clearly winging it. It is hard enough for people with disabilities to get out nevermind for some to indulge in theater tickets. I think more could be done to make it comfortable for all involved.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to catch the 2019 Christmas Carol today before it ends its run for the season--and let me tell you, it was pure magic. It's become a tradition (as for many) to head to Trinity each year during the holidays to catch the show, and this year was by far our favorite. The cast was wonderful, the dance numbers were a delight, and the added twists this year were very welcomed & appreciated--and what a beautiful message of inclusion & love. Hats off to you!

Yelp
For the past few years I've cherry picked the shows I most wanted to see. This year I was so impressed with the lineup I committed to purchasing a subscription, a combination of loving that they're honoring a more diverse and younger slate of playwrights in addition to paying homage to the classics. Take 'Appropriate,' for example - it's written by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, one of the hottest young playwrights in the US taking on issues of race in a big way. I simply can't wait to see this dark comedy dealing with a family's dark past with the KKK. Trinity has also really upped their game to make theater more accessible. You can purchase a mid-week season subscription for just over $100! It's the best deal in town! The resident actors know their craft and their community. Part of loving Trinity is the opportunity to interact with some of the resident actors in other community forums and programming. If you're one of those Rhode Islanders who has come to know Trinity as old and stuffy, or who only comes 1x/year for Christmas Carol, I challenge you to give it another go. This season is not one to be missed! The theater itself is splendid with its wrap around stair cases, balcony, and dome. Also, they bring in pastries for Ellie's - yup!

Yelp
My wife and I travel all over the nation, and Trinity Rep is surely one of the top performing arts centers. Being in the great city of Providence, in its fantastic arts and entertainment district, and in one of the top culinary centers in the USA makes it all the better. All of the Providence Metro Area and New England are very fortunate. Great city - great theater!

Yelp
Saw a Christmas Carol today like I do every year with the family. Great show, I love that they keep the cast small and always keep it in Victorian times, I hate when people try to modernize shows. But this theater is a lovely place to see any play. There's not one bad seat in the house. I also love that the stages always encompass all 3 levels and have trap doors for things to go up and down the stage. This is a great theater and a staple of the community.

Yelp
What fun! We went and saw "Absurd Person Singular" last evening and had a wonderful time. Founded in 1963, the theatre is "one of the most respected regional theatres in the country". Trinity Rep presents a balance of world premiere, contemporary, and classic works, including six subscription productions, and an annual production of A Christmas Carol, for an estimated annual audience of 160,000. They have two actual theaters and the one we were in was the smaller of the two, presenting a much more personal experience than you might otherwise enjoy elsewhere. The set, cast, lighting and acting was all top-shelf. Then again, it usually is. The building itself is very pleasant and clean. Everyone that works there is similarly pleasant. Get out and enjoy this treasure.

Yelp
I saw CLYBOURNE PARK over the weekend. What an incredible show -- recent Pulitzer Prize for the playwright. Most of the 7 actors were from the company with 2 from the Brown U/Trinity Re Conservatory Masters program. Superb acting that got better as the show got more intense. Interesting set design, as always. The set is always why I like to arrive a smudge early to take it all in before a show starts. The downstairs theatre is small (only about 250 seats) and upstairs is bigger (seats about 500) but seats all typically have good views of the stage. Happy to go back again and again.

Yelp
Trinity shows feature the resident company of actors though the season. It's so cool to see the same talented people in new roles. (And I like listening to them on RI's NPR station WRNI's Trinity Radio Theater). The acting, the costumes, the sets - woo! love the experience. No, I wouldn't call Trinity terribly "edgy", but each season there is definitely a diversity in the program. I go to 2 or 3 shows a year, when something sounds interesting or I want to see Trinity's spin on a classic ... but mostly because I've scored free tix to something - usually A Christmas Carol, which they do annually but it's a different production/flavor every year. Both the main stage and the downstairs, more contemporary theater are beautiful and there's really not a bad seat in the house. It's well-organized with the box office separate from the lobby with decent hours. There's a full bar whenever there's a show and the drinks are reasonably priced. Ticket prices become accessible to everyone with pay-what-you-can nights, $12 bench seats and discounts on day-of leftovers. We are so lucky to have Trinity in Providence!

Yelp
Sadly disappointed with this years show. I would consult with trinity about specifics prior to taking your family, especially children this year.

Yelp
Very impressed with the production of A Christmas Carol! It's going to be a tradition now every holiday. The theater is small enough that you can see every single detail from afar/top seats/back seats. Money well spent!

Yelp
I usually see an average of four shows at Trinity per season, and I can honestly say I've never seen a bad one. I will admit that I saw one so-so show, but it's been 95% excellent. The acting sets and production are always flawless, and even if I go into a show a little skeptical or unfamiliar with the story beforehand, I usually come away with a completely changed opinion. Case in point, I went to see Oliver last year because a friend wanted to go. I don't care for Dickens and I wasn't too keen on seeing a bunch of children overact, but I was blown away. It was fantastic--the songs were excellent, the acting flawless, and I think I even caught myself holding my breath at some points because I was so wrapped up in the story. Most recently, I saw The Glass Menagerie, which was stunning in its strangeness. Even though I've read the play several times, and seen a movie version of it, I was still surprised. Barefoot in the Park, from last season, had me crying with laughter. It was sweet and smart and funny plus the sets were also absolutely amazing. Other favorites include The Grapes of Wrath (saw that one twice) and Ivanov, which was unexpectedly delightful. Rhode Islanders are so lucky to have access to high quality theatre like this. I also appreciate that they recently rolled out their Under 35 program, which gets people under 35 a $25 ticket to each show + a cocktail. I love live theatre, but unfortunately majored in English, so I don't have a lot of disposable income. It's nice that Trinity recognizes the desire and need for younger people to keep going to live theatre. My parents didn't do a lot of things right, but I truly appreciate that they instilled that love in me at a young age. Both of the theatres are without a bad seat, and it's always fun to see how dramatically they can change the space from show to show. I never know what to expect when I go to Trinity, except that I will have an excellent night. I highly recommend you make a night of it and treat yourself to some live theatre.

Yelp
Saw an adaptation of "Crime and Punishment," which was excellent. The small size of the theater made it really intense (even for C&P). This was back in January. If they put it on again, I'd go again just for that. The only thing I didn't like was the number of old people who were loud and smelled like smoke. But I guess Trinity Rep can't do anything about them. (Maybe it was also because we went on a weeknight in the dead of winter.) Anyway, I've only seen one play at TR so far, but that was top-notch, so I'm keeping my eye out for others to go to.

Yelp
I've seen several plays at Trinity Rep over the years and each time it's been an enjoyable experience, not only because of the great actors but I love the ambiance of this place. Ticket prices for plays are worth every penny spent and the prices are very reasonable for a great night out. The building itself, inside and out, is beautiful; it's warm and inviting. While the theatre area itself it's enormous, that's why I like it so much because you don't feel like you're being packed in like sausages. I wish the chairs were a bit more comfortable, but I get it; this place is a non-profit organization. Trinity Rep is well respected amongst theatre goers from all over the country. This is a "must see/must do" for anyone visiting Providence.

Yelp
Bravo! Went to see 'Merchant of Venice', and it was worth the trip. As good art does it, approaches the topic of religion and revenge while letting the audience decide what is fair. You'll love the bit parts, and the humor is well conveyed. RI should be so lucky to have this theater right downtown.
