Trinity has a lot going for it. The space is modern and gorgeous, yet still maintains that New Orleans 'feel'. The chef has an innovative menu that pays homage to traditional New Orleans favorites while elevating the food in a modern way. The night we visited there was only one server to take care of the entire house, yet she was delightful, warm, and knowledgeable. We sat at the chef's kitchen counter and enjoyed watching the food being prepped. It says a lot about a restaurant when they're willing to show you the kitchen - this crew takes great pride in the cleanliness and flow of their workspace.
We tried a variety of dishes - most were stellar, though we had two minor disappointments and the reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5. The smoked oyster deviled eggs were simply outstanding - as were the crispy pork belly and the zucchini salad. Ricotta gnudi was a standout as well - but in full disclosure, I'm a ricottaholic. The first minor disappointment was the broiled beef marrow & blue crab. The presentation was beautiful on the mound of salt and a wooden plate, and the marrow and crab were tasty. The disappointment was that the dish did not include a slice or two of grilled bread on which to spread the marrow - a pretty standard accompaniment for roasted marrow - it helps vary the texture of the dish. The second minor hiccup was the coconut cake with coconut bubbles dessert. I give Trinity props for doing bubbles - unfortunately, coconut bubbles end up looking like saliva surrounding the cake. The cake tasted good, but the presentation was off-putting for me.
We will visit Trinity again the next time we're in New Orleans - our dining experience was enjoyable and the food was very good. I'm looking forward to seeing more of what this chef and his crew can do in the future!
