The French Quarter’s La Mensa Closes After Just Eight Months - Eater New Orleans

"Owner of fast-casual CBD cafe Louise Britten Carboni quietly opened La Mensa last June with Hugh Uhalt, the owner of the building at 1117 Decatur Street. Uhalt previously operated upscale Creole restaurant Trinity in the building for three years, saying when he closed it last April that he had a new, more casual concept in mind." - Clair Lorell

I was very impressed. We had the wagyu meatball soup (not pictured but one of our best dishes), crispypork belly, fried Brussels salad, grilled romaine and the goat cheese and apple dessert. Really wanted to try the snapper and soft shell crab but we were stuffed. Also, judging by the delicious meatballs, the wagyu burger must be pretty great. Overall I can easily recommend Trinity.

Wonderful surprise. The food was outstanding. My wife had the chicken 3 ways (crispy breast, dark meat was made into roulade and sausage) and I had the rack of lamb. The chicken truly was the Star as I have never had chicken beat out a good lamb, but it was truly awesome. The rack of lamb was cooked perfectly and was nicely seasoned. I did not care for the cabbage that was served with the lamb, but I am all about the meat. Overall great food, we will be back.

Went with a group based on a recommendation. Overall good atmosphere and service but I can't say anyone in our 6 person group was blown away by the food. Menu was straight forward and rather short with only a handful of entree options and no specials. Usually thats ok if a chef decides to knock a few things out of the park instead of offer too much variety. Didn't really get that feel here. Not a bad meal by any stretch just not really up to par with the some of the similar resturaunts in town. I had the seafood lasagna and it tasted like a hodgepodge of cheap frozen fish without much character. Would try many other places before ending up back here.

The food is amazing. I got the braised pork and it was prepared very well. They also have excellent cocktails. I went there with my wife and that night, they were experimenting with new drinks on their menu. On top of that, service was excellent.

Below Expectations. I give this place 2 stars because of ambience and attempt at being upscale. We are a planned large group reservation that has been in place for over a month. The service is disappointing. The portion sizes are deceiving. Look at this wilted leaf for a side... I’ve been to plenty of nice places in New Orleans, this is by far the most disappointing experience for price point.

The Life Aquatic cocktail is delicious. I've never had sage in a drink before. Great menu, artisanal cocktails, friendly bar staff, and the place looks amazing. A classy oasis in the Quarter.

Trinity has a lot going for it. The space is modern and gorgeous, yet still maintains that New Orleans 'feel'. The chef has an innovative menu that pays homage to traditional New Orleans favorites while elevating the food in a modern way. The night we visited there was only one server to take care of the entire house, yet she was delightful, warm, and knowledgeable. We sat at the chef's kitchen counter and enjoyed watching the food being prepped. It says a lot about a restaurant when they're willing to show you the kitchen - this crew takes great pride in the cleanliness and flow of their workspace. We tried a variety of dishes - most were stellar, though we had two minor disappointments and the reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5. The smoked oyster deviled eggs were simply outstanding - as were the crispy pork belly and the zucchini salad. Ricotta gnudi was a standout as well - but in full disclosure, I'm a ricottaholic. The first minor disappointment was the broiled beef marrow & blue crab. The presentation was beautiful on the mound of salt and a wooden plate, and the marrow and crab were tasty. The disappointment was that the dish did not include a slice or two of grilled bread on which to spread the marrow - a pretty standard accompaniment for roasted marrow - it helps vary the texture of the dish. The second minor hiccup was the coconut cake with coconut bubbles dessert. I give Trinity props for doing bubbles - unfortunately, coconut bubbles end up looking like saliva surrounding the cake. The cake tasted good, but the presentation was off-putting for me. We will visit Trinity again the next time we're in New Orleans - our dining experience was enjoyable and the food was very good. I'm looking forward to seeing more of what this chef and his crew can do in the future!
