Remembering New Orleans Red Beans and Rice Legend Pableaux Johnson | Eater New Orleans

"He moved to San Antonio to attend a San Antonio university, graduating in 1988 after studying history, religion, and sociology. Influenced by San Antonio’s Latino culture and the Cajun culture he grew to love in New Iberia, Johnson changed his name to Pableaux during his college years, drawing from two influential cultures in his life. He took the Spanish equivalent to Paul, Pablo, after making Latino friends in San Antonio. He gave the name a Cajun spin in the spelling, using "eaux" instead of "o" in recognition of Cajun influences in his youth in New Iberia." - Stephanie Carter

Not only is the mid-century modern architecture absolutely gorgeous, the college itself is a real gem of liberal arts in culture-rich San Antonio. This is a small university that is a real sleeper, with quality and selectivity that lift it into the elite ranks of liberal arts colleges. Despite all this, it is little known outside Texas, and is frequently confused with Trinity College in Connecticut. There's a large endowment that allows the university to be generous with financial aid, and to maintain a distinguished faculty that would stand out at any elite liberal arts college in the country.

Amazing campus life. Small class size. Great professors and guest lecturers. Renowned international community. Best university in Texas. Strongly recommended.

We are celebrating our daughter's graduation this weekend and started with a beautiful Vespers service followed by the President's Reception for the graduates. I had not attended Vespers before, and this service incorporated many of the various beliefs held by students such as Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Students played and sang beautifully and the Chaplain spoke inspiring words. The ceremony had delicious heavy hors d'oeuvres including chicken, empanadas, and desserts.

I wish they offered more graduate programs bc I would transfer here in a heartbeat! I am in love w this campus! It is smaller then most but it’s in the most ideal location surrounded by beautiful homes and natural scapes.

The education students receive here is some of the best in the state. The reason I am giving Trinity three stars is to call attention to a glaring issue: despite its billion dollar endowment, the campus is barely used during the summer and makes little effort to involve the city of San Antonio. As a former student and San Antonio native, I'm aware of how beautiful Trinity is and how hard the gardening/landscaping staff works to keep it that way. The architecture is magnificent. There are numerous opportunities for the university to use its resources to hold spectacular public events, yet the campus during the summer might as well be a ghost town. There is a real and relatively easy opportunity for the University to use its plentiful resources for the edification of the public. It should do that.

Genuinely love this place. The staff are all the nicest people you will ever meet. The faculty is incredible. Very quirky but very intelligent and always willing to help the students. The campus is beautiful and unlike any other college campus. Plus it's minutes from downtown San Antonio so there is plenty of opportunity to immerse yourself into the San Antonio community. 10/10 would recommend.

Google
Beautiful campus, amazing professors, and awesome people. Really glad I came here. I would agree with some of the other reviewers that the social life can be tightly knit, but that just means that one needs to put themselves out there more and get out of one's comfort zone. Small classes mean you get to know most of the students on a personal level, and same goes with the professors.

Google
Amazing campus and school. The professors really care about you and know you. Class size is amazing (small) and you can learn/do things you would only get to do in a masters’ program of a big university like research and getting published.

Yelp
Great facilities and event We came to support the music groups of the school Also loved the holiday theme Wonderful talent here and the young people were so professional Want to return to this beautiful campus during the day so we can see better Location is ideal and easy to access Plan to make this an annual Christmas Tradition

Yelp
This review is focused on Laurie Auditorium, and not the campus as a whole. I come here for musical events, and the auditorium has average to good acoustics. Not quite as good as the Tobin but decent. The seating is pretty good. I have always been able to find a good spot. The building is pretty spread out but makes a big circle. So it's hard to get lost. Overall, this auditorium is very clean and well kept up. It's a nice place for events and has a great professional feel to it.

Yelp
Beautiful campus that offers a great tour given by a current student if you're thinking of attending. It was just under 2 hours and covered all the basics... the various buildings, the sports center and even the dorm. I'm not sure it's a good fit for my son but I'm very glad he got to experience it, if for nothing more than a comparison to other colleges he is considering.

Yelp
Went to Trinity University for the first time. My son is invited to attend a special showcase for his FG, Punting, & KO efforts. We were very impressed with the facilities. I understand their video on their website. "We are a solid Division III school - with Division I amenities!" Very nice place.

Yelp
I just want to take the time and express how rude you alls faculty is outside of your grounds. To have a Trinity University employee call me a democrat only because I asked her to sit behind the acrylic glass protector? I asked her politely while I helped her out with her services, she has the audacity to make this political by saying she's vaccinated and that I'm a democrat just for asking a simple favor? I have been sick and yes vaccinated but that does not mean I can't get sick. SYLVIA FINCH is the employee. I don't know if she's an instructor or just staff but you all need to address this with your faculty. SYLVIA FINCH is the worst kind of person that there is out there to meet. You are not above anyone SYLVIA FINCH

Yelp
Go Tigers! Such a pretty campus. They've done it right here. This private university offers a wide variety of public art for the students to enjoy. I really appreciate the fact that Trinity offers ongoing lectures open to the public. Every year, they go above and beyond, and get a really incredible speaker. Stay tuned to the website for additional details. My only complaint about this campus is the number of stairs around here! Gah! The whole university seems to be built on a series of hills overlooking downtown, and it seems like you're always climbing! It's a great campus to lounge around on and sit under a tree. My favorite thing about Trinity has got to be the Theater Department. They put out four plays a year, and it's a great way to get some culture. The theater prices are cheaper than a movie, and the productions are always top-notch. I wish Trinity had a better graduate program though. They only offer a small handful of graduate degrees.

Yelp
They have a nice small disc golf course you can play quickly, yet is also challenging. I love doing things outside and this was a great course to hit with mi hermano last time I was in SA. Nice elevation changes throughout. No more than an hour, even if your are a horrible player. Parking can be a little tricky. Good luck and throw straight!!!

Yelp
I have to say I'm very disappointed in Trinity's education system. They never have enough classes and I'm always waitlisted for classes I need for my major. Even though I am currently a rising junior and I'm still waitlisted for classes that I should have priority over. I'm a BAT major and the business department is not offering enough courses to meet the demands of enrolled students. I pay tuition for an education and should not be turned away from classes necessary to complete my degree.

Yelp
I could fawn over this school for hours; whenever I encounter a high school kid looking at colleges, I usually do. I would say my years at Trinity were the best in my life, but that would be shortchanging the school. It wasn't only a fun, social time. It prepared me for a constantly improving life, developed me to experience the world in broader and better ways after graduation. My professors all took on roles as mentors for me, and they continue to remain in my life as close friends. I grew as a person, artist, and intellectual at this school. It was an education that refined my individuality. For that alone I can't imagine a better college to attend.

Yelp
Do you want to be awesome? Do you want to get a degree? Do you want to get a degree in awesomeness? Then you should to go Trinity University. What can I say that you don't know? Trinity was a time when I was the most passionate, most involved, most political, least relenting I ever was. It was great. I made some great friends. It's a beautiful campus. The grass is green, the buildings are shining, birds sing. Professors actually want you to learn. Staff want to help you. Other students want to know you. I always tell people, I don't know why I chose Trinity, but I can name so many reasons why I stayed. Trinity is an insular experience. You'll know in the first semester if it's right for you. If you make a full year, you love it.

Yelp
Very good, small liberal arts college. I went there for school and had fun while getting a good education that prepared me for a job as an engineer in Silicon Valley. For the most part the professors are great. Small class sizes (almost every class i had there was below 15 people) help to create a more personal experience. The only draw back is the large number of wealthy suburban kids driving around in luxury cars that daddy bought them. For the most part, they only hang out with eachother and can be easily avoided.

Yelp
I'm just about to graduate from this university and I have to say that is fantastic. Small class sizes, great professors, beautiful (and small!) campus, and the food selection in the dining areas is large (even though the quality isn't great, but the sushi is good). I've met all kinds of great people here, and the wealthy suburban kids with the luxury cars that daddy bought them (that would include me, btw) actually DO hang out with everyone else. Overall, it's pricey, but it's a private liberal arts college, what do you expect? However, it was rated the best for the money, so I'm very pleased.

Yelp
I loved my time at Trinity. It's a great liberal arts college with excellent technical degrees. I loved the small class sizes and the one on one time I was able to get with the professors. It was nice to know they seemed to genuinely care about you and your eduction, which I've heard isn't the same and larger institutions.

Yelp
I hated my time here. They bunched me my freshman year with a bunch of passive aggressive gossips, which left a stigma over me the rest of my college career. The business capstone is a joke, taught by a grumpy old prof with tenure, he spent half the class talking about how important his class was and the other half teaching questionable finance practices. Its a beautiful campus, but it doesn't make up for everything else.

Yelp
I went to visit just to see the architecture and was surprised by the faculty I ran into. i was worried that they might not like a random person roaming campus and studying buildings (usually this is frowned upon since the whole terrorism thing). Fortunately for me and SA, Trinity has spent the time and money to have some really nice buildings without being gaudy. For any architecture dorks, like myself, the administration has a pretty interesting curtain wall system on the courtyard area of the administration building. Thanks for letting me be nosy Trinity University.

Yelp
Our dorms are seafoam green, blue and yellow. The food is greasy and made many people sick. Our bathroom door doesn't have a lock, it only closes with Velcro. They wouldn't provide us with a swipe key to get into dorms so they could have control of us going in and out. We found a bunch of empty beer boxes hidden under our bed even though the campus has a zero tolerance policy of alcohol. There are many many stairs and no elevators in our dorms. I had to lug my entire suitcase up 5 flights of stairs. But the staff is nice.

Yelp
I loved my time there. I am in a PhD program now. Because of my outstanding education at Trinity, particularly the Freshman Writing Workshop, I have done exceptionally well in my PhD coursework!

Yelp
If ever you attend an event at the Laurie auditorium be advised this is really an auditorium!!!! This was a DL Hughley headliner (he was not that funny) but Arnez J was hilarious. The comedians were taken aback when they arrived on stage which was very small. The VIP tables were not offered food or drinks... Really?!? We sad on the second row, great seats and due to the stage and venue itself pretty glad extra money wasn't spend for the vip section. There was food and soft drinks being sold somewhere but not easy to find. It must have been located on the 3rd floor no where near the event. People were returning with food items but after seeing hotdogs in foil paper, nachos in plastic bowls and other things unappealing, we decided to not locate the concessions. The parking garage is terrible. We arrived in enough time to get the second empty spot. There was no sign for clearance and you can see some vehicles have actually ran into the pipes above. We were in an extended SUV and barely fit so beware. People were parking across the street in another buildings parking lot a little walk down so that might be a good option. Parking garage is free to park.

Yelp
If you are in any way liberal or non-christian, DO NOT go here. Yes, the campus is beautiful and the professors are wonderful, but the students are unbearable. Coming from Minnesota where open minded people are fairly easy to come by, I am suffering here. They will tell you the school is liberal and fun, but it is not. The parties are terrible. You will be rejected if you are not conservative christian by the majority of the students. A lot of them have never even left Texas. I am transferring.

Yelp
Highly overrated and over priced. S.A. doesn't have a lot to offer in the way of education, so Trinity is touted as the high end school because those who go there pretend to have money and probably can't get into another university. Snooty, stuck up wannabes. A much better education and city would be Rice University in Houston. Better education, well known for it's education, and of course there's Houston! Found Trinity to be lacking good courses and most who graduate from Trinity don't leave S.A. so of course they say it's good....there's nothing else in S.A. For a larger public university with everything, a good rounded education with a diverse student body and fantastic education, I'd choose UT Austin...NOT UTSA!! I do not recommend any "university" in S.A. it is a waste of money and time.
