How the Chicago Chef Iliana Regan Cooked Fanfiction | Eater

"An early-career workplace where a young Regan worked front-of-house and staged, it was led at the time by chef Grant Achatz and provided her first real exposure to high-end dining; the experience crystallized her belief that, if she couldn’t find the food she wanted to eat, she would have to create it herself." - Rachel P. Have been coming here for years and it is always awesome! Love their pasta dishes and brunch. The french onion soup is always very good too.

Google
Great experience here! The food was delicious and the service was top notch. I had the wood fired pesto bread and three cheese tortellini with chicken then finished with the chocolate silk pie. Everything was great.

I recently had brunch at Trio Restaurant, and my experience was decent, though not spectacular. The atmosphere was pleasant and the seating comfortable, which was a nice start. The food and drinks were good.

I haven't been to this restaurant in years and went back again recently and everything we ordered was delicious. The calamari was to die for. It was light and airy and not chewy. My friend always gets the salmon and loves every bit of it. The almond basket dessert was divine Check out the photo.

We just had my baby shower at Trio yesterday in their semi-private dining room and it turned out amazing! Emma and the staff were so easy and wonderful to work with regarding our food choices, accommodating specific diets, and making the room and tables look beautiful. Their prices are so extremely reasonable for a party compared to other places around the Charlotte area. The food was delicious and all our guests had a great time. If you want a budget-friendly party location, call Trio! We had a great time and would use them again in a heartbeat!

Stopped in for a late weekend lunch. The food and the service were outstanding 👌🏾. I even had dessert: my favorite Creme Brulee. The restaurant was not busy but had a steady pace of customers. Everyone at my table thoroughly enjoyed their meals, and the restaurant was very clean. I also asked a few other guests about their food choices, and each person rated their dishes 8 and above! I have never asked other guests about their choices, but because of our great experience, I decided to ask others. This is a great spot for lunch and dinner, and I was told Sunday Brunch was even better! I highly recommend this spot, and I will definitely come back.

Enjoyed meeting a friend for annual birthday lunch. Food was good but not exceptional. Service was excellent. I wish our table had been on the periphery rather than in the middle of the room as it was a bit difficult to hear each other.

The shrimp and grits are phenomenal. And if you're in the mood for a salad, be sure to ask for the killer dressing!

Yelp
Delicious food Every Single Time. I have been a fan for years. I challenge anyone to find something on their menu that isn't absolutely delicious. Also, you're welcome. If there were awards for food, this would be a People's Choice award for sure !

Yelp
A beautiful spring evening is a perfect time to have dinner at Trio'. We was greeted and seated quickly after entering. I had the French Onion Soup, a bit salty but very good. It was fascinating watch the cook prepare pizza and such in the brick like oven. A wonderful experience.

Yelp
Met a business partner there for afternoon lunch. We enjoyed the service the ambience as well as the food perfect place to take a new client or even a business partner. Menu was expensive as well as inexpensive. We really enjoyed ourselves.

Yelp
After church on Easter Sunday, we ended up at Trio. It's been a while since I've dined there, so it was nice to check them out again. We didn't have reservations, but the hostesses went above and beyond to find a table for us. After waiting a few minutes, my party of five was seated. Our server was excellent. Very attentive and friendly. I ordered the Cobb Salad. I didn't realize the salad dressing was already tossed in the salad...must've missed that on the menu. Fortunately, I loved the dressing and ate the whole salad. I'd say the dressing was heavily tossed, so if you don't like a ton of dressing, ask for it on the side. My mother ordered the sampler because she couldn't make up her mind. She enjoyed everything but the poached egg, because she doesn't eat poached eggs haha. The brunch pizza and cheeseburger received positive reviews, and my nephew devoured his red velvet waffle. Also, the complimentary muffins they give you as an appetizer never disappoints. They're sweet and you get a nice variety. We thoroughly enjoyed our Easter Sunday brunch.

Yelp
The service was definitely 5 stars. The meals were delicious but I didn't love it. The Baked Alaska was so good. It was layers of deliciousness. The brownie was ok...

Mike M.

Yelp
The chicken salad sandwich is fire! The service can use some improvement with more frequent attention to refills and providing small plates with apps. The ambiance I would say it is a bit noisy if you are ok with sitting close to others and don't mind the clatter of dishes and plates.

Yelp
They never let me down. Emma helped me with group reservations for my daughter's graduation dinner. We had almost 40 guests. Pros: No deposit for group reservations Reasonable minimum spending amount We arrived early, they were ready and waiting Full menu selection Friendly and attentive wait staff Food was delicious Service was timely They didn't rush us out when the kitchen closed Cons: None

Yelp
I go to this restaurant at least quarterly as it's a great way to step back into a time period when restaurants were uniquely centered around family and gatherings. From the large booths, the home like atmosphere and such great southern hospitality service...one can't go wrong with this choice. I genuinely like this restaurant as is and it has withstood the test of time and its "old" vibe is its charm. The drinks are great, the food is always tasty and you don't have to shout to have a conversation. The one peculiar thing is some tables had tablecloths and some didn't. That seemed quite odd. Next time I'll try a pizza from their giant size middle of the floor pizza oven dugout. Refreshing still water as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Best restaurant in town. The chefs do amazing sauces, so keep them in mind while ordering. I love the three cheese tortellini, the Spring salad with Balsamic, and the Almond Basket. The cozy little booths are amazing for privacy.

Yelp
Absolutely the best service and bang for your buck. Everything on the menu is delicious and we've had it all from pizzas, sandwiches, and entrees like chicken piccata. Shoutout to Michelle in the bar area, as we prefer to sit there with her. Skews an older crowd, but that's because they know a deal and the best spots to dine ;). And wonderful brunch spot!!

Yelp
There is a reason this place has been around a Very Long Time. It is Always consistent Always good. I go here about once a week to get the Cobb Salad with Killer Dressing- and it is just that, Killer! I alter mine a bit and it's never an issue. I prefer just romaine and warm grilled chicken. It disappears as fast as it shows up. They also have very good soup and I enjoy the club sandwich that is always on a fresh croissant. If I go with more than two people I highly suggest a wood fire pizza appetizer cooked extra crispy please. Service is always consistent too. Spot is clean even with the high traffic. So give it a try and enjoy.

Yelp
One of my favorite salads is trios baby green salads. It is absolutely wonderful. I love trios anyway. I will go in there and get a cheeseburger. They are onion soup. And instead of fries, I get the baby green salad. Then again I get the baby green salad with pretty much anything I order. It even goes good with the quiche. If you've not been to trios, you're missing out.

Yelp
This is definitely an old Charlotte classic. Typical American fare but enjoyable. I'm a big fan of the chicken salad sandwich. I frequently get a salad with salmon and the house dressing. But the real reason I give it 4 stars is the almond basket dessert. Crunchy lacey almond basket shaped magic with praline ice cream. I've been eating this my whole life and Trio and would go just for the dessert!

Yelp
Came here for a birthday celebration, and it did not disappoint! We called in advance to see if they could.seat a part of 9, and they said no problem. We arrived and were seated immediately. Our waitress Han was exceptional! She took all of our orders without writing it down and did not get an order wrong. The food was delicious! We ordered the calamari and it was delicious! We also ordered various dishes from hamburgers to meat loaf, pasta, steak, etc...it was all delicious, to say the least. No complaints at all. The food came out in a timely manner, and our waitress was very attentive. This is a great location off Pineville matthews rd. Plenty of parking available and seating also. Definetly will be back.

Yelp
Awesome Food and Service along with a great atmosphere. Has been a mainstay in the area for over 25 yrs.

BEST customer service! Hands-down the best and most polite staff in the Charlotte area. We thoroughly enjoyed our food and great atmosphere to take family.

Yelp
What's not to like about a hidden gem of a restaurant off Highway 51! The food is always fresh and delivered to your table in an expedient time frame. Not to mention their prices are excellent. Their staff is always there to make sure your dining experience is awesome. Michael T

Yelp
For 25 years Trio is one of our favorites. The servers are excellent. The food is wonderful. Order the Almond Basket for dessert.

Yelp
Such a Cool Established spot opened in 1991. I love to see places that have been around more than 30+ years. The inside was 90s vibes/decor. They even have a wood fire oven you can sit at and watch them cook! A cool looking bar area, like it's local vibes. It's a large place! The food was very good that we had. Wood Fire Bread Trio for appetizer a big yum to the bread spread with garlic oil and shredded basil. 3 dips marinara, bean dip and a muffuletta type spread. Chicken Tender which were extremely fresh and perfectly prepared! Along with old school crispy French fries(little skimpy on the fries if your sharing) We also had the Which we brought home and unfortunately haven't tried it yet. Their delicious curry chicken soup with a great spicy kick, SUPER FRESH TASTING! If we are ever down that was again we will be back for sure! We didn't make it to dessert but they are all made in house and LOOK AND SOUND AMAZING!!!!

Yelp
Delicious food. Great service. Fun atmosphere. Would recommend them highly! Well worth the 30 minute drive from our home. Trio would be an excellent choice for a special occasion.
google avatar

Yelp
Great ambience and server was excellent. Unfortunately the chicken sandwich I ordered was very disappointing. The chicken breast was dried and hard on the end, the bun was just a dinner roll which I had already had with my salad. The cheese looked like it had been sitting on the sandwich for quite some time, and the apples on top were brown. It must've been sitting around for a while because it was not fresh. I almost sent it back. The almond basket dessert was the saving grace. Very delicious.

Yelp
Had the Chicken Piccata tonight. It was outstanding! Service was great. Liked sitting in the bar. High marks to an excellent restaurant.

Yelp
Had an amazing night at Trio! We were able to get seated with a last minute walk-in before the dinner rush came in. The entire restaurant was packed maybe 20 minutes after our order was put in the kitchen. My sister and mom had the onion and the clam chowder soups and they were very flavorful. We had the salads and not photographed was my sister's fried chicken but we got to try it and it was amazing! Everything was reasonably priced, very well seasoned/expertly cooked and the staff was incredibly friendly. Someone even opened the door for us as we left! I think my favorite part of the meal has to be the magical apple fritters with cinnamon ice cream. If you haven't been, get a meal at this gem! I know I am coming back, this was an awesome place to try out and a delightful dinner. I saw a burger at another table that looked delicious.

Yelp
I have lived in Charlotte my whole life and have passed by Trio's dozens of times and never thought to stop by until a friend recommend we go for brunch. Reading Trio will fill up quickly not long after they open we decided to beat the rush and go early and be there when the doors were open and it was a solid decision. They open at 10 on the weekends and we were there when the doors open. Within 20-30 minutes after they opened the place was packed and there was a line of people waiting for tables. I was there with a group so we got a wide assortment of food amongst us. I opted for the shrimp and grits which was a solid choice. Like everywhere, Trio puts their personal spin on the dish. Rather than a huge plate or bowl with nothing but shrimp and grits there is about a cup of grits with five or six shrimp, collards and a fillo wrapped cheese and sausage "burrito". My son ordered the chicken and waffles and he was slightly disappointed. There was little flavor and the entire dish was kind of bland. My wife ordered eggs Benedict and the dish, overall, was good. There was one egg slightly overcooked whereas the yolk wasn't runny. I thought the flavor was spot on but nothing out of the norm. Our service was spectacular and very friendly. She was extremely attentive and took great care of us. We were a table of six and with as many people that were in the restaurant I would expect delays but we did not experience any. Overall, Trio is a great place and I would definitely go back. I want to try some of their dinner entree's as I heard they are fantastic.

Yelp
Good as ever and great for a relaxing lunch with friends. Service is superb. Menu will please anybody. Pizza oven puts out soft, doughy, flavorful pies. Get what you want on them. Reasonable individual sizes. Parking is beginning to be a problem but solvable on weekends as other businesses are closed, leaving parking spaces. Reasonable prices. Very good bar.

Yelp
Service was nice but very odd at the same time. Server wanted to take away time from our date for one of us to translate for her and take an order for her. We politely declined and told her to use google translate or someone on their team to assist...The place is long overdue for a remodel. Food is like cafeteria food and so is the quality and plating. Anytime you call they tell you to call at a later time because they are too busy. This place isn't that busy and I witnessed it in person when I dined in and overheard who I assume is the manager or owner tell another guest over the phone the same thing. That is the worst thing you can do. Guests who call are most likely guest who have never been and will likely end up not visiting because they couldn't get an answer over the phone. You can worry less about your guests who are already in the restaurant...

Yelp
I went in and Nobody seems to care that I a guest. 1. No One greet me at entrance. 2. My friend found me and we went together to the table. 3. The waitress came and ask me what do I want for drink. As soon as she asked me and turn around and left. I was about to ask what kind of drink they have? She just ignored me and left. After my friends arrived, we ordered our drinks and she didn't listen carefully my friend order. My friend ordered that she wants water without Ice in it. But she came back with water with ice. My friend didn't say anything back to her. When all my friends arrived, we all waited for 30-45 minutes to order our foods. I finally asked for waitress and then she came to my table. We all ordered but every time she speaks very loud, very rude and she has no patience at all. Finally, I left for restroom and my friends surprised with my birthday desserts. The waitress came with a dessert in the boxed and in the shopping bag. She dumped the bag on the table so loud that I can hear boomed on the table. My friends requested that she can bring a birthday dessert with Candle and light on it so that they can sing happy birthday songs to me. That was disaster and ridiculous that the waitress did to us. She should not be allowed to work at the restaurant because she didn't know how to serve customer with respect and manners. I didn't know her name because she never mentioned to our table. Horrible experience for me and I would never go back again Trios. The manager/ owner should know about his employees.

Beth J.

Yelp
We have always loved Trios in the past but last night was awful. Maybe it's because I ordered takeout, but the food we got was not good at all. Most of it got thrown away. The chicken salad was slimy and the beef was tough. My mom called to let them know, but the woman who identified herself as a manager didnt want to hear about it. Very disappointing.

Yelp
always consistently great food and service. the best coffee too! many great gluten free choices
google avatar

Yelp
This is a nice spot. Reasonable prices, nice atmosphere, amazing service, tasty food. The shrimp and grits was so good! The collard greens were seasoned well. My only complaint is the brunch menu is only served on Saturday and Sundays. That wasn't clear when I found this place on Yelp. However my mimosas were only $6 compared to the $5 brunch mimosa, so it was still worth it. I'll definitely dine here again!
google avatar

Yelp
Our server Forrest was as doting as any service industry worker could be. An "American" style restaurant that truly has something for everyone. Menu boasts everything from vegetable dishes, pasta, meat, poultry and seafood. Rotating special menu that offers many choices and actually doesn't help in making any decisions before your server returns. Happened to be seated opposite the wood burning pizza oven so ya'll know something great is happening here! Pretty cool upper-level wrap around bar that I noticed had everything from well liquor to top shelf. Happened to indulge in a couple glasses of a delightful Sauvignon Blanc pre flight - in the words of Borat....very nice Situated opposite a "strip mall" where another one of my posts stemmed from, but this location sits on the main drag, great location and private parking lot. Priced accordingly and fantastic service by Forrest. Will definitely be back again.

Yelp
My wife was craving bread pudding and this place doesn't disappoint!! We had their seasonal chocolate chip bread pudding. My wife stated it was very nice at a 8/10. The restaurant had a nice atmospheric layout and my wife stated it reminded her of a 70s restaurant. To me it's spacious and laid out well. Had a big open atmospheric vibe. Highly recommended as the staff was friendly and attentive.

Greg B.

Yelp
Wonderful food, great service, friendly staff, affordable prices. Broad variety of choices, there's something for everyone!

Kayla C.

Yelp
My mom wanted to get some delicious brunch so we tried Trio's! We got there at 10am and there was no wait, we were immediately seated. Service was great, they were friendly and very accommodating. We got the chicken and waffles, breakfast sampler, and the red velvet bread for dessert. The chicken and waffles had the best chicken! It was very crispy and tender. The breakfast sampler was delicious, if you're looking for something light get the breakfast sampler. The dessert was also good! The red velvet baked bread wasn't too sweet and paired well with the yogurt.

Morgan S.

Yelp
Very quiet place, but stays busy. Menu is a great selection. Clean place. Our server Angela was absolutely amazing. Like genuinely the best server we've ever ever had.

Alex S.

Yelp
My wife and I have been going to Trio's since it opened in 1992. It always provides a very good meal for the price. The pizza is special with a thin crust and good toppings that is cooked in a wood fired oven. We also like the salmon specials and the salads. The balsamic chicken salad is great. The owner is there daily, they have chefs not cooks, so I am very surprised that anyone has had a bad experience. In our years of eating there the few times that something was not right with the food or was not what we expected it was replaced or removed from our bill. Alex S.

Yelp
My friends and I decided to have dinner at this restaurant after having recommendations from others. We had an enjoyable experience. A nice atmosphere, a friendly waitress, good service , reasonable prices, basically tasty food attractively plated. I ordered the French onion soup, my dining mate the New England clam chowder. Our entrees: 2 Trio chicken salad plates, the spinach lasagna and chicken over pasta. My onion soup tasty, very few onions in the broth, the clam chowder quite tasty. The two of us who ordered the chicken salad. greens and fruit plate decided it was something we probably wouldn't order again. The green apples must of been coated in lemon juice and tasted quite bitter. Our greens were slightly coated in the vinaigrette and I had to ask for more. However the chicken salad was delicious. The other entrees were decidedly quite tasty . We would probably return here again and order different menu items.

Jim F.

Yelp
Recently we've have had inconsistent meals. Caesar salad a couple of weeks ago came out nicely tossed and lettuce was fresh. Last week it was served at a very cold temperature, all the cheese was in a ball at the bottom of the dish and it was heavily tossed with way too much dressing. Also, it had tomato's which were absent from my first salad. Also tried the onion soup which was very salty, not many onions and may have had MSG mixed in or blended into the broth. The crust was somewhat burnt. My wife had a salad with Salmon. The Salmon was very dry, had black grill marks and was overcooked. Not my typical experience at Trio hence, a generous 4 stars on a 2.5 star meal.

Yelp
I went for lunch today with a group that meets monthly. This seems to be a popular place as they go there regularly. This was my first visit & I can see why it's so popular. We had a group of maybe 30 and we were all able to to sit on the screened in and covered patio. It was great! Fresh air, spaced seating between tables, great service and great food! I had the Cobb salad which was so fresh and great flavor! The menu looked like it had so many good and healthy selections, I will certainly return and would recommend this place especially for meetings when the weather is good!
google avatar

Yelp
I like this little nugget restaurant. It's got good food and a great atmosphere. On days you just need a little pick me up it does just that. They don't have everything on the menu but enough that you won't leave hungry. Just a nice place to rest your weary bones and get something good to eat.

Yelp
I was craving something sweet after my workout, so stopped in for one of my fave desserts in town...that is, their lovely Almond Basket. Simply a Must-Try! I've been to this restaurant a good number of times in the past decade or so...and from their menu, this dessert always tops the list as their best...to me, at least! On a down note, I've had some service issues in the past year, so not sure if I'd highly recommend the restaurant in general. Even today, I stood by the hostess stand for at least 3 minutes before near flagging someone to escort me to a table. Given that I arrived outside of their prime lunch or dinner hours, guess it's understandable...but there always seems to be one issue or another as of late. Still, they DO have this heavenly dessert...so I can't rate them less than 4 stars.

Lori A.

Yelp
Food is sooo good!!! Service was outstanding!! I ordered the meatloaf and was amazing surprise how amazing it was!

Yelp
I hosted a bridal luncheon at Trio Saturday for my daughter. I have to commend Trio Management and staff for an excellent job. The room was prepared for us to my exact specifications of seating and items to be provided. And as usual even for a party of 26 the service and food was excellent. We all know that restaurants are running short staffed now, but it seemed that this luncheon ran as smoothly as any event I have hosted. I had personally been there several times for meals with my friends and my husband and never have I had a disappointing experience.

Paul F.

Yelp
The food is always delicious and the staff is very very friendly. Never had a bad meal there. If you have a special function or event to celebrate, they have a great patio.

Yelp
I got the Cobb salad with grilled chicken and it was fabulous! The dressing is killer and the roll that came with was soft and delicious. Quality and fresh ingredients.

Yelp
Today's Sunday brunch was my first visit here in probably ten years but, for the life of me, I'm not quite sure why I've stayed away so long. It had never disappointed in the past, and it definitely did not do so today. What was once a contemporary California grille kinda vibe (upon its 1992 opening), now seems a bit retro; however the atmosphere is still bright and fresh. If I remember correctly, it was one of the first places in Charlotte that offered Cali-style brick oven pizza. Prices are fairly reasonable and service is still friendly, attentive and fast. Sanitation grade was an acceptable 95.5. The menu is quite eclectic, offering everything from single serve pizzas, to sandwiches, to beautifully prepared entrees. Deciding on what to order from so many diverse options can be daunting. The good news is that you cannot go wrong. I was pleased with my choice - the Buttermilk Battered Fried Chicken Breast and Gravy. It was served piping hot and was absolutely delicious as were the sides (creamy grits and apple cider collards.) As a collards lover, I'd go so far as to label them as "special"as they were perfectly cooked, not mushy like most, and had just the right touch of apples and bacon. My went with the Eggs Trio. It consisted of a rich Hollandaise sauce over poached eggs and crab meat on an English muffin served with creamy grits. It was tasty but not quite hot enough temperature-wise, and was missing the spinach that the menu stated it was supposed to include. Still, that's nothing that would preclude us from returning (soon). Sunday brunch also includes a special bonus - homemade mini muffins and banana bread with whipped butter. Every bit as delicious as I remember! Careful not to fill up on them however, which can happen before you realize. The restaurant has five distinct dining areas highlighted by an expansive patio and a lightfilled atrium-like main dining room. On your first visit, choose it, if available. There's also small, cozy bar area across from three comfortable booths that are nice. Keep in mind however that this joint almost always requires a wait. So, be prepared. But it's worth the wait. You probably figured by now that this place is a Gotta Try. We hope to be back real soon!
