Yelp
Shout-out to owner Jay and his family for staying strong during this COVID-19 pandemic. Triple Jays Pizza, named after Jay and his two sons, Jeremiah and Justin, officially opened February 22, 2020 near Piedmont Park in Midtown. They started out as a food truck and now have this brick-and-mortar restaurant. What a time to open.
I discovered Triple Jays thanks to Yelp. Despite all restaurant dining rooms in Atlanta ordered closed by the Mayor during this pandemic, I saw on Triple Jays' Facebook and Instagram pages that the business is still offering takeout (and pizza is a perfect takeout food). My fiancee and I decided to give these guys a visit and support them. I can't imagine what it's like putting a lot of time, effort, and money into renovating and opening a new restaurant and then getting hit with an unprecedented situation like this. Our hearts really go out to restaurant workers during this time.
This is a locally-owned family business. A true mom and pop shop. Jay and his wife Lasonia served us at the counter while their sons, Jeremiah and Justin, worked preparing orders in the kitchen.
Triple Jays is part of the Azure on the Park apartment building on the one-way stretch of Piedmont Ave in between 10th and 11th Streets. Limited street parking is available immediately outside the restaurant. You can also park in Azure's secure deck for free with restaurant validation. In order to get validation from the restaurant, you must purchase $10 or more. The entrance to the parking deck is conveniently located next to the restaurant's storefront.
Remember to take your parking ticket with you because they'll put a validation sticker on it and you'll need your ticket to regain entry into the deck.
This isn't a big place. The dining room can seat roughly, I guesstimate, about 30, maybe 40, customers max at a banquette and along counters at the patio-facing storefront windows. More seating is available on the enclosed uncovered patio. The dining room has two TVs and a walk-up and order/pay counter. It's a casual place. It's in a good location due to foot traffic in the area and it's a great place to walk to if you're at the park and want to buy pizza. And you don't have to commit to a whole pie here; you can purchase pizza by the slice. Note only the cheese and pepperoni pizzas are available by the slice.
Triple Jays offers two kinds of pizza: (1) NY-style which is round, thin crust, and foldable and (2) Detroit-style which is rectangular and thick crust. During our visit, slices ranged from $2.95 for a plain cheese NY slice to $4.00 for a pepperoni Detroit slice. Whole pies cost anywhere from $12 to $23. The whole NY pizzas are bigger than the whole Detroit pizzas. They're 22 inches in diameter.
There are seven topping combinations for you to choose from or you can customize your own pizza from 14 toppings priced at $0.50 per topping on a slice or $2.00 per topping on a whole pie. In addition to pizza, they serve wings in four flavors (6 pieces for $7 or 10 for $11), fries ($3), and fried dough ($3.75) and fried Oreos ($4.25).
Not advertised on the menu, but was explained to us by Jay and later posted to their Instagram account is their "B-Side" pizza. You can mix and match two sets of toppings into one pie. The B-Side is a way for the family to remember "B" (Brandon), the son/brother they lost to cancer in 2014.
We ended up getting a B-Side of pepperoni and "Da Meats" for $23. Da Meats comes with pepperoni, Canadian bacon, sweet Italian sausage, and regular bacon. The pizza was outstanding. Definitely one of the best NY-style pizzas I've had in the city. I highly recommend the pepperoni (a classic that you can't go wrong with) and Da Meats too if you're into meat lovers pizza. The whole pie was freshly made to order so there was a bit of a wait for it, but the wait was well worth it. Folks who ordered after us and got slices got their food before us so that's something to keep in mind (I think slices come out faster than whole pies).
Our pizza came out piping hot and smelled wonderful. The pie was huge and tasted just as fantastic as it looked. At 22 inches for the whole thing, each slice was large and foldable. One thing I appreciated about the pizza was it wasn't too greasy and still tasted delicious. It was a quality-made pie, from the generous, savory toppings to the appetizingly chewy and satisfying crust. The pizza was so big that it lasted the two of us multiple meals, making it a good value too.
It's tough times for the restaurant industry right now so please tip extra if you can afford it. Triple Jays uses the Square POS system so my itemized receipt was automatically emailed to me.
Thank you, Jay, Lasonia, Jeremiah, and Justin. Midtown Atlanta is lucky to have you.
