Triple Sun Spirits is a bit of an enigma.
While their cocktail craftsmanship is first class, and the floor plan in the long narrow State Street Newtown building is simple but comfortable, the dishes coming out of the kitchen are not comparable to the mastery at the bar.
My son and I stopped in yesterday afternoon to check out the mixology and sample the kitchen fare. We thought a local Bucks BBQ operation was in house, but learned that was not the case. It was only there seasonally, but that they still had a snack menu of things like sandwiches, flatbreads and TexMex. Not what we hoped for, but it would do.
My Vodka Basil Berry cocktail was excellent with chunky ice, House distilled vodka, raspberry/blueberry infused and basil leaf. It was a cold mellow drink that only hinted at its alcohol content. Liked it a lot! My son ordered Workhorse Golden Lager in a can. The brewery is in King of Prussia and has a solid reputation. He enjoyed its IPA-like flavor.
We ordered Chicken Nachos for the young man and Tomato Basil Flatbread pour moi. Here is where things began to go south. At $17, the Nachos were predominantly chips with a unreasonably small proportion of chicken, avocado and salsa. Chips were store bought, and there was low level cheffing to combine and present the platter. Edible, but uninspired. So, too, the flatbread. Costco or Walmart prefab "flatbread," with artificial scorch marks, tomato sauce and minimal melted cheese - heated to acceptable temperature in a microwave so it was hot but soft throughout, without any crispness, nor originality ($12). The lack of effort was apparent. We ate what we got, but looked at each other with expressions that approached, "WTF?!"
The coupe de grace was the closing transaction with the servers. We had good service from the one woman assigned to our table. She did a decent job until the end when she dropped off our check. Right after that a group of her friends/off duty colleagues stopped in for drink and conversation. She forgot about us as she chatted with them and eventually sent someone else to take our payment. What should have been a quick transaction turned into a 15 minute delay. Unprofessional, to say the least.
With great drinks, awful food, high prices and spotty service, there is not much to recommend about Triple Sun Spirits. But, if you go, have your cocktails and go elsewhere in town for a meal. There are plenty of very good choices nearby.
