Trompo in Oak Cliff Could Be the First Dallas Restaurant Closure of 2024 | Eater Dallas

"I read that Trompo taqueria is facing imminent closure after owner Luis Olvera was locked out on January 3 for failure to pay rent, and D Magazine reported it as the first closure of the year on January 5. Olvera posted a video on January 7 saying, “I owe my landlords $30,000,” and told Eater Dallas that the amount represents six months of back rent; he also warned that “if we do not raise $36,000 over the next few days, the taqueria closes.” A few investors reportedly offered money in exchange for ownership stakes with revenue conditions he calls “unsustainable for my family,” so instead he launched a GoFundMe that had raised $4,875 (around 10 percent of what Trompo needs) at press time. Trompo began as Olvera’s backyard operation and grew to five locations, earned a spot on Bon Appetit’s 2016 best tacos list, and later won a D Magazine best-tacos accolade, but the newest location opened in late September 2022 has underperformed despite gaining a license to sell alcohol; Olvera says sales never reached even 60–70 percent of what he’d seen before. After a period of denial in early 2023 he made cuts to spending and vendors and let staff go in October 2023 (giving them a month to find other jobs), exhausted his savings and lines of credit, and saw November 2023 become his lowest-sales week of the year; he blames himself for not making changes sooner. He also cites digital confusion with GPS and online ordering hurting traffic, and says the outpouring of messages and support from loyal customers has put joy in his heart even as he contemplates leaving the food industry if the campaign fails." - Courtney E. Smith

Google
I like their tacos! It is very optimistic to call this a “restaurant ”, it is gas station cafeteria. But they smoke with traditional technology and don’t work when raining. But their tacos are amazing. Big portions, lot of supplements. I recommend to try their Jamaica drink (a mixture of Mexican fruits). I always took “to go” option. Most hard part of the exercise is to get home smelling those in the car :)

Google
Great presentation, food was fresh, tastes really good with really good flavor. Great staff also was greeted upon walking to the counter. Definitely will be coming back.

Google
This is a gas station (Valero) taco joint that served great street tacos. Ordered tripa (crispy and chewy flavorful bits), lengua (juicy and tender), barbacoa (melts in your mouth), and Chorizo (flavorful), they're all so very tasty. They have flan that's not overly sweet, just perfect. This has become our regular eatery here in Plano.

Google
Authentic gas station taqueria! Not a lot of great authentic taco options in this area of Plano so great to have Trompo back after they closed for a while. They have quite a few options and the tacos are huge. Normally I can eat 5 tacos when hungry but I was already stuffed after 4 tacos here. They really load them up with meat. Got the trompo, lengua, and barbacoa, and ironically thought the trompo tacos were the least impressive since the meat was a little dry. The lengua was pretty good but the barbacoa was probably my favorite as the meat was soft and loaded with sauce and flavor. It was a nice touch that they give grilled onions and a grilled pepper with the cilantro and onions. Def a great option and will come back if craving authentic tacos.

Google
Trompo is located inside the Valero gas station on the Southeast corner of Independence and Spring Creek. There are so many items on the menu ranging from tacos to menudo. They have a website you can order from, although it’s not the most user friendly. I put in a large order and it was ready in 15 minutes. There’s a table located inside Valero you can sit in, but most people opt to carry out.

Google
Never eat at this place! It's Disgusting! The gentleman who was taking orders and handling the money never changed his gloves. He wast touching the register the money, then he turned around and started handling the raw meat. HE NEVER CHANGED HIS GLOVES!!! After I confronted him his response was I'm not grabbing it with my bare hands. Health & Services should look into it. Very Disappointed Disgusted Not Clean . We got our money back.

Google
This used to be maybe the best Trompo in Dallas (all locations). The meat and red salsa are just perfect. Until recently... They have completely changed recipes. The meat/marinade is completely different. The salsa is more of a tomato puree than a creamy spicy red. The ingredients in the burrito changed. The sizes changed. Even the tortilla changed for the worse. Why fix what was never broken? I hope the significant changes being made save the company a ton of money and makes it worth it for them because it is such a drastic difference it is merely a shell of its former self and former flavors. So disappointing. Just see the color of the meat change from my photos to some of the others posted.

Google
This is the first time trying this spot out just by driving by it...and all I can say it is so good. Their tacos were made just right and fresh to order. Also, they sell burgers that hit the spot, especially the Hawaiian Burger with fries. I recommend this place to anyone wanting to try something new and within the area.

Yelp
The best Mexican food I have had in DFW. The trompo is amazing!! The taco de trompo and torta de trompo were bomb!!!!! This place will be a go to going forward.

Yelp
For the location its in, this is one of the better places to get authentic tacos from. Pulling up and walking in, this place is not obvious to anyone passing by. The sign for this place is slightly bigger than a license plate on the wall. Its mostly a gas station, but they did have a generous amount of area carved out for the kitchen, as well as three tables you can sit at. The staff here speak english and spanish, but it was good practice for me to order in spanish. I got the Hawaiian torta, as well as one trompo taco on corn. The torta here is fantastc! I dont want to claim its the best Ive had, but I will say its a new personal favorite of mine. One thing that stood out to me was how much mayo they used. Every bite felt like mayo was well pronounced in flavor and texture. I personally thought this enhanced the meal, but some people may be weirded out by this. Well proportioned in the ratio of all the ingredients, the bun was soft but still held up, and the pineapple actually stood out without hogging up the flavor in the forefront. Its also a pretty big sandwich, so if you are a dainty eater, you share share this or take the other half to go. Although the menu says it comes with one "patty", I didnt see any hamburger meat in mine. While I was happy with my overall order, I was left a little confused on whether I misunderstood or they messed up. The trompo here is heavily doused in annato seed and pineapple. This is actually a good thing! Some places are light handed on these ingredients, but not here! The meat itself is tender and juicy. My biggest complaint is there is no char what so ever. Its not a deal breaker, but it makes me question if the trompo spit's temperature is set lower than it should be. One of the unique factors of cooking with the vertical spit IS the charred texture you get from how its cooked. I like that the taco order comes from raw and grilled onions. The tortilla itself was not the most sturdy, but it had a good corn flavor. The salsa here is definitely fresh, especially when one of the workers is sitting outside the kitchen using the blender to make the salsa. It was a little annoying having the blended whirling away at full blast as I try to enjoy the meal for half the time I was there. They have a mini fridge where they store it, which I appreciate more than just a bucket of ice. Both the red and green salsas have a generous amount of spicy kick that excites me tongue, tingles my scalp, but doesnt leave me uncomfortable by any means. Both are fantastic, but the green was more refreshing.

Yelp
I like to come to this place for street tacos and I like the convenient location. Their specialty is their tromp tacos and I always order the 10 trompo deal. They used to sell 10 for $10, but now it has increased. Depending on where you order it from pricing is drastically different. If you order from in store, it's 10 for $15.10; on Clover online, it's 10 for $13.95; and on google ordering, it's 10 for $19.99. I recommend ordering from Clover for cheapest pricing. Often times I find when you order ahead, your order may not be ready when you arrive. What that means for me is that I have to wait for them to start my order when I arrive. The food itself is great and I love their sauces. It is in a gas station on the corner of Independence and Spring Creek so you can also pick up snacks and drinks while you are in. I would recommend.

Yelp
I personally recommend this spot the food is good and ofc they give you all condiments , i asked what should i order just because i was curious and they were actually helpful ,, place was clean . I suggest coming here their food is great

Yelp
Must be new ownership. Barbacoa meat was dry and seemed like it was the cheaper leaner beef rather than the fattier meat typically used for tacos. Tripas was soggy and not the typical crispy savory level of goodness as before. Sauces were completely off and about 1/10 taste of before. Limes were missing. Missing a taco from order. Corn tortillas soaked in some red oil. Will be looking for new taco spot in this area unfortunately.

Yelp
This is their newest location and was stoked that it's available on Uber eats! I saw this on Instagram and they were advertising the 10 for $10 trompo tacos deal. It's about $13 on Uber eats but I think that's still a pretty good deal. I ordered various tacos-- trompo, tripa (intestine), barbacoa (beef cheek), carnitas, and carne asada (called "fajita" on Uber eats). Trompo was definitely the best out of all of them and barbacoa is a favorite as well. Coming from CA, I can say I've had my fair share of tacos from taco trucks to taquerias. These are authentic street tacos and my fav so far in the DFW area! @trompogarland on IG

Yelp
One of my favorite taco places in the area. It's inside of the Valero gas station. Super convenient that they take Yelp to go orders - service is quick, it's always ready on time. Prices are fair and the meat quality is great. If you're into tripas, this place does a great job with it. Their trompo is excellent, I always get a 10 pack. I pass a lot of taco places to get to this one, well worth the half hour drive for me.

N00b D.

Yelp
This place is located inside of the gas station, but don't discount it. The tacos are quite good. Corn tacos are cheaper than flour, but even flour tacos are inexpensive. The ten taco deal is not as good as it once was. The barbacoa in particular is so soft and fatty and delicious. It's some of the best barbacoa I've had. The lengua and the carnitas were decent, but nothing special. There's not much to say about the service, it's just a window in the back of the gas station where a man will take your order and then a few minutes later you'll get your tacos. There are four tables lined up nearby if you want to sit but it's hard to call it a full restaurant.

Eric N.

Yelp
Food is good, but their not opening until 9:30 am misses breakfast almost entirely. Miss their breakfast tacos

Yelp
The restaurant is inside a gasoline convenience store. They do have a few tables and chairs. I asked the cashier, what was their best selling burrito. She recommended trompo. So I ordered one monster Trompo to share with my hubby. The burrito was huge but it had more veggies and rice than meat. Trompo is marinated pork cooked like a shawarma meat. The flavor is okay. The green and red salsa was really good. Next time, we will try their menudo.
google avatar

Estella D.

Yelp
Location is in the gas station. The tacos are delicious! The trompo tacos were excellent. The barbacoa tacos were good too! I ordered a taco de lengua (I got a carnitas tacos instead) ... it was good too. The red & green salsa was good. Not too spicy, just enough spice. Service was fast, good was good. Price was good.
google avatar

Yelp
The Plano location is in a Valero station and easy to overlook. I'd driven by numerous times, but only learned of the details because I did a search for menudo. I'm so glad I did. I've been wanting to find true al pastor tacos this was just what the doctor ordered. The Cubana torta seemed a bit steep, but it's the size of a football. I'm trying to eat heart healthy and space ot out over a few days, but it's so good I want to devour the whole thing. I can't wait to try the Hawaiiana and Al Gusto.

Yelp
Ok, so, this place is sooooo good! Reminds me of tacos I used to eat growing up! Very fairly priced and have lots of options! If you live nearby, definitely give them a try! Tip. Their nachos are covered in cheese not queso... which I loved!
google avatar

Holly N.

Yelp
If you're looking for good authentic tacos, man this place will satisfy cravings!! Pro tip: if you like pineapples in your pastor tacos, you can ask for it!! Pastor (5/5) Barbacoa (5/5) Lengua (4/5) Tripa (4/5) I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVEEE THE BARBACOA TACOS!! Beat barbacoa in the plano area for sure. Also, get the churros because it's soooooo good. If you ever had a Taco Bell caramel Apple empanada (they discontinued this :/), it reminds me of this!!
google avatar

Laura S.

Yelp
Love the tacos at trompo! The barbacoa is my absolute favorite. It's always super tender and juicy. The menu here has great variety from trompo to barbacoa to lengua to tripa etc.
google avatar

Jarrod R.

Yelp
Now these are legit trompo tacos. I've always loved Fuel City but these are top notch.
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
I have never had Trompo before, and loving shawarma made me curious to try it. I had the 10 trompo taco special and it was delicious. I also loved the two types of hot sauce they have. We have been here several times now, and they never disappoint.
google avatar

Yasmine R.

Yelp
This was one of the best burgers I've ever had hands down! That crispy bun sent it through the roof. The fries were okay I would next time ask them to be crispier. I would recommend women to order online there's ALWAYS creepy guys (customers) undressing you with their eyes it's disgusting! The food is great the customers just give it a negative vibe for women.

Yelp
i was being lazy and didn't want to cook dinner so i was looking for a place to order food from. it was a tuesday so i was looking for tacos of course. i found this place and was shocked to see it was at the gas station on the corner of my neighborhood! i could walk there! (if i wanted to...it's hot in TX and i was really hungry) i love trompo and was pleased that there was some so close to me. i immediately popped over to the Valero gas station on Spring Creek and Independence to check it out. i ordered their trompo deal - 10 trompo tacos for $10 (which they have all day every day...not just on tuesdays) the service was fast and the food was good. there's a row of tables where you can eat your food there, but opted to take everything to go since i lived so close by. there's no way that i could eat all 10 tacos by myself, but i had enough tacos for the rest of the week which was amazing. i love fries, so i'll definitely be back for their loaded fries. #fattypatty approved

Yelp
Located inside a Valero gas station. I tried the trompo tacos on flour tortillas. Good tasting food and good service.
google avatar

Sarihah M.

Yelp
Absolutely love the Trompo and Barbacoa tacos from here I am O B S E S S E D!!!!!! They're affordable and the staff is friendly and helpful while being super efficient. The inside is not the biggest but there are tables and chairs if you prefer to eat in. There's also gas station snacks of different variety so there's lots of compliments to eat with the tacos. BONUS THEY HAVE ELOTES HERE and they are really good but definitely recommend eating there to get your condiments put in how you like it.
google avatar

Rolf R.

Yelp
I've ordered pastor tacos and burgers from this place several times. I usually ask them to separate the meat and pack single tortillas instead of paired tortillas (sometimes, we use our homemade tortillas and toppings). The salsa is good. It's hot but not that hot, and it has a good flavor. We ordered the burger for our son, he said it's good, I have not tried it myself, but I trust his judgment.

Jacob S.

Yelp
Best tacos on this side of town. Beans and rice could use a bit more kick. Not a bad value though.

Adam G.

Yelp
Gas station tacos but the five star version. I love this place. I wish they were open later.
google avatar

JT B.

Yelp
Ordered delivery through a provider and I have to say, the trompo tacos were pretty delicious! I was definitely hesitant to order from a gas station, but these were the closest to the trompo tacos I've had in Mexico. Will order again!

Christian L.

Yelp
Ok this place is the real deal ! If you are old school Plano it's like jamals check cashing on ave k. It's in a gas station so it's not a take the family sit down place. It's got great food for take out or to have delivered. They also have Elote corn in a cup. You have to try it. The Plano High school kids found out about it so it's busy around lunch. Be a little early or late for faster Time.
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
This is inside the Valero on spring Creek and independence. I'm a big fan of Trompo from the Garland locations and was pleasantly surprised that a location opened up near me. Had two trompo and one fajita Tacos, tasted just like the Garland location so I was happy. I'll Def be coming back (my roommate ran here right after I told him they opened)
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Best bang for the buck in the Plano/Allen area. The trompo is the best there is here. The salsa goes perfect with the tacos and grilled onions too.

Stacy R.

Yelp
Apparently there a new owner and a lot has changed. The Trompo special is no longer 10 Trompo tacos for $15. The Trompo meat is not the same, less seasoning. With the last owner the Trompo meat was a deep red , dripping with juices, full of flavor. Now the meat is a light pink, and dry. Even the salsa taste is different and the old staff is gone. When I ordered the special, I asked for a refund because the meat wasn't well seasoned at all. I used to be here once/ twice a week, now I gotta find a new Trompo spot.
google avatar

Lydia O.

Yelp
My Taco Tuesday craving set in so I decided to try this place out on a whim. Since I wanted to get a little bit of everything, I ordered the trompo, chicken, carnitas, and barbacoa tacos. Everything was surprisingly well seasoned and the flavors were on point! Although it wasn't delivered at the hottest temperature, (uber eats), it seemed to be fresh! The green sauce was SUPER spicy! Idk if I just got a scoop of the hottest batch or what, but I put some on the first taco and my eyes watered almost immediately and a cough followed right after that. So yeah, use that at your discretion. The red sauce had a tiny kick but nothing too wild! All in all, this was a solid taco spot! Honestly, I think the main downside here was that they don't really give you a lot of cilantro and onions. I definitely made it work with what I had, but it would be awesome to have a bit more to begin with. Also, I think it'd be even better if I went to the actual restaurant to get it hot and fresh. I'm looking forward to doing that next time!
google avatar

Gaudy D.

Yelp
Ordered some lunch from here! Trompo tacos safe ! The flautas are delicious rice and beans on point! I could not be happier ! Excited to have found you. Thank you YELP!
google avatar

Austin B.

Yelp
Don't be the fool that discounts this place cuz it's in a gas station! Trompo is basically al pastor style pork. We religiously get the ten Trompo tacos - on corn tortillas and each is pretty small but priced accordingly. They are the bomb! The quesadillas are done with mozzarella which is a bit different but super good and they don't skip on the protein. Also a big big fan of their sopes which you can't find as readily in other Mexican joints. Their carne asada, Trompo and chicken all fantastic. Wasn't s big fan of their carnitas - a bit dry but that coulda been a one off. And their salsa are on point - green and orange. The orange is the spicy one, fyi
google avatar

Karina T.

Yelp
10/28: We couldn't help ourselves and went again! This time i came with pictures! My rating doesn't change at all! They were a little stingy on the meat for the tacos, hehe, but they were still bomb!

Donald N.

Yelp
Racist people. The dude with three lines in his eyebrows always creeps me out and stares at me. I don't know if he wants love or a fight. Anyways they never charge my mexican friends for salsa but I get charged $5 for just enough to eat my tacos with. Gross tacos and it's connected to a rundown Valero that smells like ass. Not it
google avatar

Chris B.

Yelp
Excellent lunch! My wife and I had Trompo (Excellent Flavor), Beef Fajita, Lengua and Barbacoa tacos. We also got a sopa and a chiro just to get a good sampling and it was all excellent!! I look forward to taking another run to try their burgers soon. Their sauces were fresh made and tasty. We will be going back.
google avatar

Christian O.

Yelp
this place is the bomb . com i hope yall never change thank you for the good tacos :) trompo is a must i didnt know what it was so i ordered a safety 2 bistek and i regret i didnt order all 4 trompo
google avatar

May M.

Yelp
I came I ate and I left... to never return. The chicken was barely warm, tacos were hard, not enough sauce for the tacos AND they did not get my order correct. I was skeptical because it was located inside of a gas station but Channel 8 Corresponder gave it such great reviews, so...I took a chance. Maybe he was lucky to get a better meal. Ending on a better note... I give them two stars for the Caramel Churros. They were delicious!
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
It is okay, really cheap. The trompo meat was really tough, and was heavy on the soy sauce. No me gusto!
google avatar

Patrick H.

Yelp
So for awhile since visiting Cabo a few years ago, I've longed for Mexico quality Al pastor. This place has come the closest. That's all I'm going to say....
google avatar

Paco A.

Yelp
Best trompo in the metro so far. I wish they could do more cilantro rather than onions
google avatar

Walter C.

Yelp
We thought this might be a good place to sit down between soccer matches but alas it's a gas station restaurant so not quite what we needed.

L D.

Yelp
I'm not sure if this place is under new ownership or not but the last few times I ordered have been awful. This is saying a lot because this was my legit favorite taco place until the last 2 months. I order from this place at least 2-3x a week and it's been awful recently. I always order around 30-40 trompo tacos per order and it used to come sliced and delicious. They must've changed it bc the tortillas are super tiny now and they used some kind of chopped mystery meat instead of the delicious sliced trompo that I've been used to. Awful is an understatement. They charge more now which I'm ok with if they still made them the same but this is terrible now. Crappier, smaller, and stale tasting tortillas and some kind of chopped mystery meat. Such a shame. I thought it was a fluke the first couple of times and kept trying again bc I loved them so much but it's no longer worth it. Please change back to how things used to be. This is terrible. I had to trash this entire order.

Angelo T.

Yelp
The food is outstanding! I've tried the trompo salad bowl twice now and haven't been disappointed. The food is fresh and hot. I love the carnitas tacos and barbacoa tacos.
google avatar

M V.

Yelp
All our favorite taco spots in Texas end up being out of gas stations. Trompo was exactly what we hoped for. Simple, classic, street tacos for a quick lunch.
google avatar

Spencer W.

Yelp
Some of the best tacos around, and all for an affordable price. It looks sus, especially with it being in a gas station, but fantastic food. We haven't tried everything yet, but haven't been disappointed with anything yet
google avatar

Qunh N.

Yelp
The only trompo place in Plano. Taste similar to all the ones in garland. It's inside the Valero. Trompo taco slap no cap

Lauren H.

Yelp
Best TROMPO tacos !! They always make sure each taco is filled just RIGHT!!! Highly recommend! Might seem sketchy because it's in a Valero.. but ya know, the hole in the walls are normally the BEST to grab tacos. 3 taco plate w rice & beans for $8 .

Texas D.

Yelp
I always tell people the best tacos in DFW are at gas stations and this strange urban lore continues. They call them trompo tacos but to most of us the spinning grill is called a trompo and the meat is called al pastor. Either way, theirs are pretty good and they have a ten for $10 deal every day. They have other tacos too but I haven't gotten around to trying them yet. I did order a torta once and I was a bit underwhelmed. It had all the right stuff on it but it just didn't taste fresh. I guess for me I would rather go up the street to a sandwich chop for that. They didn't have bottled Mexican Coke behind the food counter but the gas station had it in with the other sodas so you can get it, you just have to check out from both registers,
