Best Restaurants in Providence, Rhode Island | Eater Boston

"If you could turn a block party into a restaurant, you’d end up with Troop. Inspired by hip-hop culture, skateboarding, and street food from around the world, this colorful, graffitied restaurant is run by a group of partners, including chef Jason Timothy and Revival Brewing owner Sean Larkin (whose beers are on tap). On the ever-changing food menu, you’ll typically find several vegan options, such as spicy-sweet wok-charred cauliflower and a fried tofu banh mi. For carnivores, there’s an oversized cheeseburger and fall-off-the-bone jerk chicken. Drinks include the whiskey-based Hot Stuff, made with Uncle Nearest 1884." - Jenna Pelletier

The service and experience was great! Our waiter was awesome and brought the vibes. I was looking forward to an amazing food experience as well (I heard great things) but the food was really bland. I couldn't finish it. I asked for to go boxes so I could try to spice it up at home and it was a no go for me. I would definitely go back for drinks!

Pure Fun: edgy (and hilarious) decor with outstanding service and tasty food. Highlights include the amazing vibe, video library, art, general design of entire restaurant, enthusiastic service. While we were enjoying a chill late night dinner, we were surprised and delighted to actually be in a restaurant that had a dj (🔥DJ JUTT🔥) spinning. The experience really hit the spot. Thank You!!!

I had a large group get together to celebrate my graduation here and it was perfect. The staff was amazing, accommodating, and gave great service. We were obsessed with the pork belly but everything was delicious! The place itself has a really laid back chill vibe with lots of graffiti and artwork scattered throughout and a spacious super cute outdoor area as well. Parking was really easy to find and it was just the perfect setting for this occasion all around. Even as my friend gave a toast they turned down the music for us, and that seems like such a small detail but those are the kinds of things that show the character of the people who work there. Thank you for your incredible service! This was our first time and I will definitely be back.

Google
A dope vibe with hood-like atmosphere, walls covered in art and graphics. The seating matches the theme of like a rock band rocking it out in a garage. Customer services is excellent. Always a cheerful welcome. In fact, if the food was good, this be a regular spot. But unfortunately, the foods bad. Trust, I’ve waited to eat there for dinner once, and brunch two times hoping I could change my mind about it even if there was only one dish I could enjoy. Each time I’ve ordered something different too. AND I’ve ordered dessert. I swear, I was giving it all my best effort. I wanted to be able to make this a to go spot with friends. I actually invited a friend to meet me there and they turned it down telling me they didn’t like their food. They had no idea of my feelings. Another friend who had never been agreed to go. We did NOT talk about the food and since I legit only got two eggs and homies I was settled. She moved hers around and when asked if she’d like to take the rest home…yeah, you guessed it. I’ll go for a drink but that’s it.

Yelp
After an event at RiffRaff my family stopped by for dinner and couldn't have been happier with our experience. First of all they served me and my daughter superb mocktails - my daughter asked for citrus and spicy, and I went with whiskey sour like, and we were both very happy with the results - the bartender even checked in with us to make sure we were happy. The food really knocked my socks off. Plenty of vegetarian options. My daughter went with the street noodles, which reminded me of why I used to really like pad Thai. This version had a great citrus lime element and wonderful texture along with savory cooked noodles. Tofu was so well cooked my entire family commented on it. My Bahn Mi had bread close to French and really nailed the texture, jalapeño, and texture (carrots) in a nice package. Very good. We also got two of the salads which my family liked. In the space formerly occupied by Cuban Revolution the decor is loud and fun with a great music vibe. Service was really smart and nice. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
Troop seems to be a high quality low traffic brunch location. We were able to walk in with a group of 3 on a Friday after Christmas and get seated immediately without a reservation. The staff were very friendly and helped with menu questions. The food was very good. I had the fried chicken biscuit sandwich and the table split a pancake. It sounds ridiculous to split a pancake, but these are notably sized pancakes and splitting one between 3 people was a perfect way to balance the sweet savory brunch dilemma. Also of note was a mocktail with gochujang, which I thought was one of the more interesting and creative mocktails I've had.

Yelp
I came here for brunch with a friend last weekend. We were sat at the bar, and the service was great. The bartenders were attentive and made sure to get our orders and anything else we needed very quickly. The ambiance is really unique with all of the hiphop music and interesting artistic decor. My friend and I both had the biscuit fried chicken sandwich, and the portion sizes are ENORMOUS. The chicken itself was really nicely done--the chicken was super moist and the crispiness maintained itself in the sandwich. However, that was as impressed as it got. The biscuit itself is okay, but it's so large and heavy that at some point I just decided to eat the chicken on its own. The sauces they used were nice, but weren't super outstanding. I also got a coffee milk, which was pretty standard. I'd be back if a friend wants to return, but I probably won't seek it out on my own. It does have a great vibe, so I could see the appeal for doing a large group brunch here.

Yelp
Troop is a cute and eclectic restaurant and menu always changing up. Good amount of parking in a lot plus some street parking. Went with a group, no reservations; the place only had 3-4 fulled tables with a lot of free tables. When we checked in the waiter told us "i will have to check" when we asked for a table for 7...seemed weird with all the free tables. He sat us 5 minutes later. Everyone ordered drinks and took some time to look over menu. Waiter was very patient; some people took a long time and one complained on salty foot but waiter stayed patient. I ordered a slushy drink called pain killer and an order of wings; both were good. Most of the table liked their food except one who sent hers back for being too salty.

Yelp
Troop PVD always delivers - awesome food, super friendly service, great vibes. My last time there I ordered a squash dish with pork belly. So satisfying and delicious. My kiddo had the burger and it was top notch. Also appreciate the hours - Troop serves food for more of the day than other restaurants. Brunch is on point. There's also a fun bingo night - currently every third Wednesday each month. DJs, drinks, and prizes. Check it out and get ready for a full belly and good energy.

Yelp
Nice 90s artwork, the Decor is a vibey hip feel. There's a Bae and tables. This is a casual vibe you go to chill with Graffiti type decor. We Didn't eat anything just had the mimosa champagne mixers so can't speak on the food. The do a bunch of events here. Will go back for some of the djs and update the review

Yelp
Had a blast, came for the drinks, stayed for the food. The space is pretty spacious so don't be afraid to bring all of your friends. Sat at the bar and service was amazing, there were 2 bar tenders and they both checked in with my group of friends multiple times to make sure we had everything we needed. They also made some food and drink recommendations as it was our first time there. Highly recommend the street noodles! Cool artwork is displayed in every corner and the bar stools even have skateboards on the back of them. Love how unique this place feels. I hear they do an amazing brunch!

Yelp
Food is stellar, funky decor, chill ambience and vibe. My new fav spot in Providence by far.

Yelp
Woah- such a surprise find while visiting Providence!!! Living in NYC has made me such a food snob but I love when I find amazing local spots in different cities! Troop is a Black owned street food themed restaurant. The inside of the building itself is covered with amazing graffiti art, unique seating, and other fixtures and the menu consists of delicious street foods from around the world. Was dining solo and ended up eating at the bar. I arrived around 6 and the restaurant was about halfway full at that point and progressively got more full throughout my visit. If you're dining with a larger party I highly suggest a resy, just to be safe! The bartender who served me was so helpful and he gave me plenty of recs to try. In fact, I literally ordered everything he recommended ha. To start I ordered the Uruguayan chorizo meatballs and they were SO flavorful. The bartender let me know that the chef is from Uruguay and the love oozing out of this dish was apparent. Then I ordered the Banh mi which comes with pork belly as the primary protein. The pork belly was juicy and tender and full of flavor. The Banh mi came with a mountain of fries that were piping hot and crispy. For drinks I ended up sipping on the Smoke n' Flowers- a cocktail made with mezcal, tequila, hibiscus, and raspberry. Absolutely delicious and so well balanced. I truly cannot say anything bad about my experience here. A must try when you're in the PVD :)

Yelp
A little loud but fun food! Great staff, nice brunch scene. Mostly fried food but well made. Fried marinated tomatoes were nice as were the cheddar biscuits - very sharable. Sandwiches were generous and fun to eat. Most came with either fries or other types of fried potatoes.

Yelp
Really nice aesthetic and ambiance. I like the vibe. I had a drink which was really good. Service was decent. I was a bit confused with saying it's black owned however almost all of the staff and customers did not reflect this. I'd give it another try and try the food

Yelp
This was my first time to Troop PVD and damn did they deliver. First up the Queer O Meter scored an 11! Off the charts friendly staff and welcoming space. Next up the food. Well dannnng I almost am at a loss for words. Ok ok not really I'm pretty verbose I know. The spread was a buttermilk chicken sandwich on a cheese biscuit, a banh mi sandwich, French toast, sunny side up egg and the burger topped with an egg on English muffin. All served with a side of fries. And we got an app - honestly I don't even know what it was called but I'll call it seasoned pork and stuff on some round thing that was to die for. Perfectly seasoned and presentation spot on. I had the banh mi - it came on a soft long roll that had some rock salt on the top. That just added an extra pop to the already deliciously assembled sandwich. The fries are home style, seasoned and served hot. Our waiter, sadly I didn't catch his name, was attentive, friendly, accommodating, and knowledgable. He was the icing on a cake of a day. We opted to sit outside even though it was about to rain and we almost finished before the skies opened. But all in all a great little space. We all got an adult beverage. Bloody Mary, sangria and a mojito. All very good. My bloody came with bacon. Uhhhh YEAHHH we like! I'm a bloody snob and if y'all reach out I can give some tips that'd, in my humble opinion, knock your mix out of the park. However that said, I would order it again so yeah it was good! My only advice would be that if you don't like loud music, the "eat and beats brunch" wouldn't be for you. Or maybe they have music all the time? I'm unsure. But it's loud - please take into consideration I'm an old timer now and I turn the radio down when I take an exit off the highway. So you'll have to be your own judge! Go, tap your foot, raise your glass, eat amazing food and enjoy yourself. Cheers!

Yelp
Food/Drinks: The food was okay. No one was truly impressed with the brunch food in our group mainly because it was a bit dry and felt a tad bland for my liking. I will say I will have to come during dinner to truly rate the food because although the brunch wasn't my favorite it's not fair to say all there food isn't worth it. The mimosas at least when we went was one champagne bottle, and a small amount of juice and it was a bit costly compared to other locations who also provide mimosas. The the crème brûlée was small but very delicious. Location: This place is sooo cool, artsy and unique, and definitely a place where you can take some pretty nice photos. I would definitely say is a good place for a first date. Very youthful, and up to date. They have parking in the back of the location and also street parking. Service: Our server was okay. She wasn't as attentive but did what she had to do. Didn't check in, but that was just one experience I will have to come again around a later time to truly get a feel of this. Overall , I'd come back because I want to give it a fair chance.

Yelp
The perfect spot for a girls' brunch date! Service was great and the menu had something delicious for everyone.

Yelp
The ambiance is nice and unique and very colorful. The waiters are kind. The food is overpriced and very underwhelming. I ordered the braised beef sandwich and it was disgusting, un-eatable. I also ordered the short rib, the sauce was very strong, only came with 5 small cubes of meat and no side so I had to order French fries that were a bit oily. It was more for instagram content than food quality. This place does turn into a bar/lounge at night and the passion fruit drink was good.
google avatar

Yelp
It's been two years since I've visited Troop -- first for dinner and now for brunch! This time, I ordered their corned beef hash -- including a grilled baguette with herbed duck butter, homemade hash, and eggs. The extra additions paired well with the dish. Pretty filling. My friend ordered the stack of three cinnamon french toast with strawberry compote. Also, there was a good portion that could even be shareable. I was satisfied with the meal but thought the service was slow, and it wasn't busy at the restaurant that day. The conclusion is that the food is good, but the service is hit or miss.

Yelp
I'd recommend to come here for dinner and brunch. Parking is strange people are always nice. Standard American food nothing out of this world except for the fire biscuits. I love the decor for a birthday party for your dad or boys. I am here to be genuine and I don't think it's amazing. Just average good food.

L W.

Yelp
One word #vibes! Came with a group of friends for Memorial Day r&b brunch so pardon the late review. We opted for bottomless mimosas which had the whole table lit. Our waiter was great checking in often. The cheddar biscuit really stood out to me, it was surprisingly delicious and like nothing I've had before Everyone sampled others dishes and we all enjoyed the food !

Yelp
Troop wouldn't be my first brunch option but def one of my options for a few drinks! Food during night seemingly is better than the brunch food in my opinion. I love the dark ambiance and there is always wonderful staff that's on the floor or at the bar!
google avatar

Dennise K.

Yelp
The menu is as eclectic as the space. The art is everywhere and is out of this world. The music always fits the vibe. Come by with friends or all by yourself (like I did) - its all good. Tonight I enjoyed their beef stroganoff and a glass or red wine. A very large portion. I know what I am having for lunch tomorrow!
google avatar

TjMartineau ..

Yelp
Our dinner was a really horrid affair. The appetisers all had to be sent back, and our main entrees were all cooked wrong.... I ended up getting into an argument with one of the servers, and had to tell their incompetent self off. Honestly might never return.
google avatar

Jordy J.

Yelp
The ambiance is different but trendy.. bar stools are designed with cool mini skateboards as back rests. Plenty of room inside for mini groups (4-7) people.
google avatar

Catherine G.

Yelp
I freakin' love this place. They have consistently amazing food that switches up, and I dig that variety. The beef stroganoff is straight up the best I've ever had. The street noods and chicken nugs are perfect with some late night drinks. If anything isn't up to your standards, the customer service is flawless. Waitstaff is consistently awesome and friendly. Really awesome spot ambiance-wise, too. Great music, a patio, a huge bar if you just want to drink and grab a bite. Their brunch is also fantastic. This is a spot I recommend to all my friends when they come in and want a truly to have fun and hang out.

Yelp
Recently stop in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. They serve brunch on Saturdays which you can order breakfast or lunch dishes till 4:00 PM . It's a very eclectic, friendly & funky atmosphere.Decor & music is lively & soulful, but hip. The food is very good. They do take their time preparing the dishes but our lunches were very good. Definitely try their Banh Mi & the chicken sandwich (Sando's). I had read about this place & always was interested in trying it & was not disappointed. Service & staff also friendly & attentive.

Jj A.

Yelp
I love troop. Yes. They lost the guy who made the vegan bahn mi. No. My life has not been the same since. Yes. I still go whenever I can BECAUSE the REST of the food also happens to be amazing. Service is always friendly, but they do get busy, so be patient b1tch! The ambiance is the best in Providence. Inside there is almost too much too look at (don't forget to wash your hands) and outside they've made a lovely little scene across from a fascinating loft (that also houses a cool coffee shop and bar if you need something after dinner). I have brought everyone I know to Troop and I won't stop.

Yelp
Breakfast brunch w/ daughter Friendly staff great food and mimosa love the Ambiance and artwork!!

Yelp
Got there at 5pm on a weekday and we were just about the only ones there...they open at 5. Got seated promptly by the open kitchen and were told to scan the QR code for the menu. I decided on the Banh Mi, my husband got the street noodles and a friend got the cheeseburger. The service was very friendly and nice, but the food took over 30 min to arrive at our table, in the meantime we had some nice conversations over the very LOUD music that was blasting all over the place...very loud.... The Banh Mi was good side. Lots of flavors the blend of braised pork belly, pate, cilantro. carrots & daikon. jalapeños. spicy mayo. french fries was really good....I liked my dish. The street noodles were very saucy, very salty, overwhelming flavor...too much for my taste. It was a large bowl with rice noodles. mixed veggies. cilantro. pickled red onion. carrot & daikon. street sauce. My husband got the fried chicken, our friend MaryAnn got the shrimp. Our friend Paul picked the cheeseburger and he was happy with it. Overall an average culinary experience. Not a place I would rush back....the loud music and the over seasoned noodles were not my cup of tea.

Tasha E.

Yelp
Food. Service and vibe Love that they have a variety of food options -- especially for vegan and gluten-free needs.

Tiffany B.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing . Great vibes as soon as we walked in - the wall art is SO unique and awesome and the music was great. I loved the dim and colorful lighting and the ambience. The seating is also so cool - there are regular tables as well as booths but also areas to chill and enjoy a meal or drink like swing chairs and the bar seemed super dope too. I ordered the Banh Mi and it was delicious - really great portion size too (I took half home and was stuffed!). My boyfriend ordered the Bifana and he thought it was super tasty as well. The fries were also different and so yummy! Will definitely be back to check out brunch soon!

Nikky M.

Yelp
If you are looking for a fun dining experience this is a good bet. Troop has a great lively atmosphere, I like the interior and overall vibe this place has. The food is good, and the service is excellent when they are not busy. I would avoid going here with the in-laws, or a first date because it can get loud.
google avatar

Duane E.

Yelp
Just over the state line was this beautiful brunch spot @trooppvd with its lovely decor. Friendly workers that were very knowledgeable of their menu. So we started off with the special. A Japanese Okonomiyaki pancake with pork belly & fresh veggies & egg. So unique & delicious. To the fluffy sweet pancakes with homemade whip cream with local syrup. But the stars were the warm cheddar biscuits with chorizo gravy. So let me tell you about that chicken biscuit sandwich with arugula, bacon jam sriracha. That was so juicy plump & dripping with flavor. Fresh ingredients to fresh cut fries. So worth the trip from CT to RI..
google avatar

Sarha S.

Yelp
Food was not good. Place looks nice but aside from that does nothing for me. Drinks are okay. Sandwich was dry

Kadyn A.

Yelp
Service was absolutely great, we were treated very well. Food definitely lived up to the hype, nothing bad to say!

A W.

Yelp
Troop is fine. It is usually pretty loud, and the food is greasy. The design is fun, but I would 100% rather go to Ogie's where there is still a lot going on, but you can talk to the person next to you. Both these places were designed by the same team.

Melody S.

Yelp
We went here while in town for a baby shower and I loved the ambiance. It's such a fun restaurant with great vibes. The food is also so unique and delicious, a great fusion! The only thing that I can say I didn't like was the music was so loud on a Saturday morning that I could barely hear the person sitting next to me.

Adil G.

Yelp
Probably one of my favorite restaurants in Providence. Olneyville neighborhood. Really cool vibe inside. Great music. Street Noods is my favorite dish. Brunch is also fantastic. Get a painkiller if you like a frozen drink
google avatar

Toni T.

Yelp
I was really looking forward to having a fabulous brunch, but had only an ok experience. First the vibe inside is great - the décor, the bar. But the music is simply too loud for the space, for a Sunday brunch at least, especially at the tables around the bar. Of course music makes poor acoustics better (no overhearing every word of everyone at every table around you) but it also makes an intimate conversation more challenging. This may just be a one-time experience because there was a party of about 15 people sitting next to the bar, so we had music and their boisterousness to contend with and one of us is a low talker. Next, we were all disappointed that the menu limited us to ordering brunch and the brunch menu is less varied than many other places in PVD, tbh. I was hoping for the basic Troop burger; the Hangover Burger just has too much going on for me for a Sunday: bacon, egg, cheese, burger would have been too much lifting! My husband ended up getting the Hangover burger, I had the Local Farm Omelette, our friend ordered That Chicken Sandwich. The burger was delicious - but my friend and I were a bit disappointed. For me, the ratio of cheese to vegetables was way off for a dish that calls itself "Local Farm," way more cheese and fewer veggies than I expected. My friend was surprised that her chicken was fried. Now, for me that would have been heaven, but nope, she felt she should have been asked if she wanted fired or grilled like she would have been if she'd ordered the Farm Fresh Salad. Service was ok for just a regular day, but with that giant party near us I think the wait staff did really a good job. While they were a bit slow in getting to us, when our waiter came over he was attentive and thorough. So, definitely come for the burgers. Oh and the drinks, of course!

Michael M.

Yelp
Do not go. We waited over an hour for our food only to be disappointed. The coleslaw on the chicken sandwich was so salty that it was inedible, the $26 hanger steak was only 3 pieces (2-3 ounces max for what is already a cheap cut of steak), and service was also not good. In fact, our server Adam H. was incredibly passive aggressive after-the-fact and did not make us feel welcome. When we politely asked about the long wait time, he said that it was a "scratch kitchen" and "isn't fast food." He also proceeded to ask us point-blank "well do you need to be somewhere else right now or something?" Trying to parade the kitchen as a made-to-order place was laughable as the street noodles tasted like the chefs had never even seen a single dish from Southeast Asian cuisine before. I've never left a bad review before, but the service, lackluster food, and overwhelming atmosphere was too disappointing with such great reviews from others. Not to mention that this was our friend's birthday dinner, and it was immensely shocking how poor the service was. Avoid at all costs.

Makayla T.

Yelp
I love Troop! It's near me, so I have gone a bunch of times. They have tons of parking and their atmosphere is super cool. The drinks are normal priced, maybe on the little more expensive end but I always get top shelf for alcohol. Their brunch is amazing, and one of the best I have had in providence. It's definitely between Troop and Julian's for the best brunch in PVD. They have champagne bottles that you can get and a couple of different juices. They offer the champagne at all times, not just brunch. It turns into a bar/club at night. The staff is amazing and super nice!
google avatar

Sara W.

Yelp
I'm always trying to find new spots to check out while traveling, and this is hands down my favorite I've seen in a while. Music is all hip hop and R&B, the decor is awesome, and the food and drinks were on point. Everyone was friendly and the staff clearly work together and care about each other. They even put Bluey on the TV for a young child who was there! They do brunch Friday through Sunday and it was phenomenal.
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
Tasty food, fun atmosphere, helpful staff. A great community-minded space that's great to check out in Providence! Great cocktails and we love the street noodles. Would love a few more veggie options.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
From the great drink menu to the fried squash rings and the burger I had from the specials I was pleasantly surprised. The waitress was very helpful with suggestions and the atmosphere was very fun, can't wait to go back for another great experience!!
google avatar

Jenesy R.

Yelp
The vibe is so chill. The food is out of this world. The people who sat us and waited on our table were tentative and nice. Would highly recommend and come back to try everything on the menu

TjMartineau ..

Yelp
Ehhhhh definitely had better. Would not recommend. Food isn't all that and a bag of potatoe chips, if you get my point.
google avatar

Gina M.

Yelp
DE. LI. CIOUSSSSS. Went on a Sunday with some friends and the brunch was out of this world. We all had the specials, this was the Chicharrón special w beans, yuca fries and home fries. It was absolute perfection. Would 100% recommend -- can't wait to go back in a few weeks!!
google avatar

Khushboo S.

Yelp
What an amazing place! Cool, rather super cool vibe! Dan was our server. From the get go, he was sweet and gave us good information on menu and their specials. Happily acted on our request to customize drinks or food (hubby wanted jalapeños added to the omelette too). Since he figured we like it hot, he brought some habanero sauce for us to try and it was yum (with some apricots in it). Crab cake itself was tender and fresh. Green sauce was super delicious. Much better improvement on just the regular hollandaise sauce. Omelette was genuinely the best. So well layered and mixed with veggies. Their biscuit was so flaky and yum .. it had cheddar in it and that made things more delicious. We would love to give this place another try when we are back in the area.
google avatar

Desiree D.

Yelp
GREAT mixed drinks! DJ & music is blasting loudly throughout. headoutside for table and lounge area - a bar tender came by 1 time while we were there. overall i liked the look and feel of the place, id love to come back for their brunch.
google avatar

Tiffani J.

Yelp
This could have easily been 5 stars but the service brought it down one. The server seemed anxious to take plates off of the table, and we were not even finished. The key lime French toast was ok. The burger was pretty tasty and the fries were good as well.
google avatar

Cathy Z.

Yelp
I love a restaurant that has a good mix of vegan and non-vegan entrees! There's something for everyone, including gluten-free options. The vegan bahn mi with fried tofu was really good! It came on a super fluffy bread roll and the sauces were delicious. Service could have been better, it was just extremely slow. They had about 6 specials but they made the waitstaff tell us the specials verbally over the super loud music. If you're going to have that many specials and live music I feel like you should just print a specials list. Also they won't seat you if your whole party isn't there just FYI. I would come back mostly for the food!
