18 Essential Restaurants in Macon, Georgia

"Located in Ingleside Village Pizza’s former location, Tropical Flava brings Caribbean fare and a variety of tropical juices to the heart of Macon. The oxtails and jerk chicken are steady favorites, and owner James Duncombe’s personality and banter are just as delectable as the food. Tropical Flava is an absolute must for both locals and visitors to Macon." - Sarra Sedghi

This is some of the most delicious food I’ve ever had! All of the staff are so friendly and helpful. We had the Tropical Garlic Shrimp, the whole Red Snapper, and the curried goat. We got Jamaican beef patties to take home. Everything is wonderful, and we will definitely be back. If you’re looking for a wonderful atmosphere with delicious food, please come here!

Google
Absolutely delicious food bursting with flavor and at a great price! The staff is warm, welcoming, and truly attentive, making every visit feel special. The interior is fresh and thoughtfully designed, adding to the overall experience. Highly recommend this gem!

My food was amazing!! The Fried Fish was seasoned perfectly. The sides were and excellent compliment for it. This was my first time trying a whole fish like this and I was pleased. My cousin had the Oxtails and she was also pleased with her meal. My only complaint is it needs to be more transparent that all natural juices have ginger in them and are non refundable if you don’t like them. Also beware that a gratuity is already added to your ticket for dine in customers.

I love this place!!! Every time I come I am satisfied!! Great food and great vibes!!! This was our to go boxes. There was no lack in the amount of food we received. Update: My husband and I dined in this evening and the food was STILL WONDERFUL!! The vibes were still GREAT!! James and his team always make sure you are comfortable and well taken care of. The amount of food, taste and everything was ON POINT!!

When we received our food it looked so delicious I forgot to take a picture of it! Everything from the food to the service was excellent! The decor was very colorful. If you want to enjoy good Jamaican food, stop by and visit this place. Our server Robert was very welcoming and very hospitable. I had the ox-tail dinner and my husband had the roast pork dinner. 😋

Google
I'm totally disappointed. This is my second time frequenting this place. When they told us about the wait, we should have left. You charge mkt price for seven "oxtails" (one) that are tough. The veggies aren't good. The first time the plantains were great. This time they aren't good. I'm just so unhappy right now. I'll spend money on great food. This wasn't even good. I hope the cake taste better than the food. You try it for yourself, though. This was my experience.

Google
Food is alright. The jerk chicken is more like brown stew chicken, spicy and slathered in gravy that I di not ask for. The curry chicken isn't bad but could use more flavor. Everything is full of pimento so watch out! Overall, it's OK but I won't be back.

Yelp
There are several Jamaican restaurants in the area, but this was the one that had the best vegetarian (or I-tal, if you prefer) selection. Ordering a jerk tofu got me one of the more impressive renditions of such a dish I've ever seen, with ample sauteed vegetables and a sauce that delivered a robust, sweet and spicy flavor. The tea I got to drink was also sweet; I wish I had known that in advance as I would have just had water. I tried a coco bread (presumably with coconut milk in it), which was handy for sopping up my sauce but not anything that really jumped out at me. There were a few other vegetable dishes and an extensive selection of juices and Caribbean sodas, so plenty of ways to get the island flavor. This particular culinary tradition isn't all that easy to find in the U.S., so I was happy to have found it here.

Yelp
Customer Service: 3 stars: our waiter was friendly and nice the older man whom appeared to be the manager was an antagonist. He got Sassy mouthed with my friend. She asked for rice and peas and he was like it's called rice and beans. Mf what?! Everywhere calls it rice and peas.... we dgaf what you personally call it. Price point: 2 stars: I've had larger portion sizes for the same amount elsewhere. If you get sweet tea you only get 1 refills. Just charge people $4 for a drink like everywhere else and give unlimited refills. Because of this is why we didn't order more food. Food quality/taste: 3 stars: it was slightly above average, his "rice and beans" needed some work, not enough thyme, coconut milk, salt, or scotch bonnet. The curry goat was noteworthy. The wings weren't that great, my friend boxed those to go after eating 2. I've never seen someone eat 2 wings and say I'm done when they are good. The coco bread and patty came from somewhere but they aren't made in house. Definitely prepackaged. Cleanliness: 3 stars: it's ok...... Overall: if I was in the area I wouldn't come back. The waiter was nice but the manager owner was some a jerk what but we noticed him being nice to another table. We would've tried more on the menu had he offered some level of customer service. We are customers that came with appetite that decided not to order much with his sour attitude. Our waiter is the only reason we stayed because he works on tips and was so pleasant. Speaking of that, tips are automatically included in your total. It's run of the mill "authentic" Jamaican food. Wasn't great but it wasn't bad.

Yelp
Great little shop. The ox tail is better than what I had in Jamaica! Delicious flavors, be careful of the bones and you're in Flava town. Highly recommend the pineapple and mango juice with ginger. Great place for a nice, intimate date.

Yelp
LOVED our dinner here! The food was fabulous and the server made our experience so much fun. We highly recommend the house-made sodas, especially the cucumber. Everything we tried for food was delicious, the chicken was perfectly cooked, the plantains were delicious, and we will be back!

Yelp
The best of the best! I've been a loyal customer for years and the food is ALWAYS delicious, fresh and full of flavor! The portions are also perfect! If you've been considering trying Tropical Flava, this is your sign to do so!

Yelp
Came here the other day couldn't believe how long I had to wait for a order of vegetables...Not the best service there was a couple of workers standing in the front counter...a male ghe other a female...very polite... confused by why they didn't let me pay after placing my order... Music was loud... it was busy so they let me know that there was a wait... bathroom had blood on seat... no tissue... and only one stall... also the door wouldn't close all the way... there was a tall bald man in the kitchen he was eating and packaging food at the same time...he was very rude I heard him yelling at his employees as I was walking from the bathroom...it made me uncomfortable for them... I decided to leave after the first 30 minutes of waiting ... won't be back

Yelp
Bottom line up front: The customer service experience that I endured was sub par, humiliating, and I will not be back. I came into town from Nashville to visit my parents. My mother and I decided to pick up takeout for Sunday lunch on April 21, 2024 between 12:30 and 1:45 PM. I normally support J&F Caribbean Delight, but they were closed, and Tropical Flava was nearby. We walked in and a woman with short cropped blond hair took my order and I paid in cash. My mom and I sat down and waited for the meal. One hour later, we were still seated and waiting. I asked the young man at the cash register for a time check on the arrival of the food. He went to check at the serving window and I saw him subsequently ask the woman whom I had paid about the status of my meal. After she looked for the ticket, it appears that she went to check on the status. It was clear to me that my ticket had been misplaced and the cooks did not have my order. As I continued to wait, my mom and I watched three groups of people receive their food after having walked in 15 to 20 minutes after we came in. The woman with the blond hair walked over to me to tell me that my food would be out shortly. I waited for nearly 15 more minutes, and finally having had enough, asked for a refund to which the woman responded she completely understood. To my astonishment, she then proceeded to look for the ticket with my order, walked back over to me, and inquired if I had actually paid for the food! She further inquired about who I had actually paid. At this point I was speechless and so taken aback by her lack of accountability that I told her to just keep the $21.00 that I paid because if I did not leave, escalation would have been my only recourse. I was angry, insulted, and completely overwhelmed with what has to be the absolute worst customer service experience of my life. As my mom and I departed, the blond lady came out of the store to further inquire, for a second time, about whether or not I actually paid her specifically. I pointed out to her that noone comes into the restaurant, gives her the order and skips payment. She asks for payment after every.single.order. I further communicated that I would not have waited over an hour without having paid. To be clear, my angst was not just about the fact that over an hour of my time was wasted on a Sunday with my parents. What most upset me was the complete lack of accountability, humility, and the demonstrated disregard for a mistake that she made and the blatant attempt at blame shifting that left me frustrated, humiliated and exasperated. I love to support minority businesses. It is something that I take seriously, and I thought long and hard about this review. However, this is a blind spot for this particular establishment and the egregious slight could not go unanswered. The owner should be wary of how her/his cash register is managed, as I am quite sure that I am not the first nor will I be the last to have this experience if the current representation keeps her job. The rest of my family has been made aware, as they have also frequented this establishment in the past, and suffice it to say that this represents at least 6 people who will not be back. In short, I will wait until J&F Caribbean Delight is open next time. I never leave there feeling like my patronage is taken for granted.

Yelp
You NEED to try this place. I'm not joking just go. The staff is awesome and the food is SOOOOOOO GOOOD but guys.... the owner makes this homemade juices and it's the best thing I've drank since birth. It was soo good I order 2 drinks and I wanted more so I bought a gallon of the homemade juice. WOW. 10/10.

Yelp
Food was delicious, and atmosphere was great. I live the presentation of the food, our server Jackie was kind and patient. They played gospel music, which was lovely after leaving church. Thanks so much, I'm good and full

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch today and had generous portions of great food. They seated us outside and it was very pleasant. My Husband Robert had the special Beef Stew. Katrina had Jerk Chicken Forrest had oxtail and I had curry goat.

Amy S.

Yelp
I placed my order at 7 pm, the website says they close at 11. The person with whom I placed my order was very rude. Three normal menu items are out of stock and when I said "wow" she responded with, "Yeah. We're out of things at closing." 7 pm is a normal dinner time for most restaurants.

Yelp
Smh I'm so disappointed I don't even want to write this review. I could have cried because I wasted $40 dining here and I don't have money to waste! I couldn't even eat the curry chicken patty if that's what you can call it. Just look at the pics. The $4 side of macaroni was the same, the both had some sort of wax paper stuck to the bottom of them. AND my macaroni had red bell peppers in them. Like. Why??? It wasn't tasteful at all. The "jerk" sauce was NOT authentic and taste like a jerk BBQ sauce and my coco bread was STALE! My fiancé eats practically ANYTHING so when he didn't like it I knew I would hate it. I hated to have to write this review. And I plan on calling for a refund. I feel robbed of my money. just look at the pics! Smh

Justina Y.

Yelp
I've come here multiple times and every time, the food is absolutely incredible. My favorites thus far are the curry goat and the fried plantains that come with every main dish. On top of that, they have giant portions, so it is well worth the cost.

Yelp
I'm glad that I finally caught this restaurant open. Their hours are a little weird. The food was absolutely great. I had jerk chicken wings and the oxtail dinner. The wings were reallyyyy good. If they sold that sauce, I'd buy for my house. The oxtails were really good also (fall off the bone) and you get a huge portion. It's definitely worth the money since you're getting 2 meals in one really. The cabbage mixture was fine, just really healthy lol. You may wanna consider trying the macaroni. It was pretty good and had a little kick to it. Suggestion: if you can, call ahead and just order pick up. It took a little while to get our food after ordering. Note: 20% gratuity is automatically added to all checks.
google avatar

Glenniece L.

Yelp
Today I purchased two large oxtail plates for $53 and I felt like it was a small plate instead of a large. Y'all getting scarce on the oxtails. Thank you for the food but I will not be returning any time soon. I feel like I was cheated out of my money and the food. I was charged gratuity on an take out order for $5. Who does that? I could see if I dinned in. It's always a gimmick for something. At this point I won't return and my friend said that she won't be back either. P
google avatar

Yelp
Great food. Oxtail dinner enough food to share. Call first for business hours. Your rice can be streamed white rice or peas and rice. The cabbage is not soggy.

Yelp
Very clean. Everyone very friendly & helpful. Everything was absolutely perfect! It's our new favorite place! We arrived as they had JUST closed, because they were getting ready for a private party...But, they didn't even hesitate to seat us & provide impeccable service! Sept 1st 2017: Took some family to eat here and this place NEVER disappoints!!! Never! The staff has always been very friendly & helpful! As far as my family, friends, & I are concerned...THIS IS THE VERY BEST Caribbean food we have ever had! Thank you Tropical FLAVA!:)

Christi P.

Yelp
We were driving through Macon and found this amazing Caribbean restaurant. The jerk ribs and chicken were top notch. The Jamaican patties were melt in your mouth delicious. The homemade fruit punches were amazing and so different than anything we have had before. The service was excellent and everyone was super nice. If we are driving through this area again we will be back!!

Yelp
I've been meaning to leave a review of Tropical Flava for years. I've been a loyal customer here for around a decade (way back to when they first opened by the Macon airport). I would have given them 5 stars then and they still get 5 stars now. The food here is consistently delicious. You can't choose wrong here, everything on the menu is tasty. My personal favorite is the oxtails with rice and peas, plantain, stir fry cabbage and the homemade fruit punch. Right now due to covid-19, service is take out only. You have to call to place your order and they'll come to your car to accept payment and bring the food. It's a little sad because you miss out on the wonderful atmosphere the inside restaurant had. Gorgeous plating, beautiful decor, and wonderful music. I know that when things return to "normal" that will be something to look forward to. In the meantime, be sure to come here and get some delicious, authentic tropical flava!

Yelp
We were finished with a tennis tournament at Mercer University an looked on Yelp to find something different for supper. We are from Columbus Georgia and were not familiar with Macon, We decided on Jamaican and decided to try out this restaurant. It was a good choice. The room was casual but all tables had white tablecloths and colorful flower decorations. The location was in a quaint older shopping strip in a beautiful historic neighborhood. Easy parking out front. The food was way better than most restaurants and very modestly priced. The service was good. My wife had the jerk ribs and I had the oxtails. The mango cheesecake was really good. Be prepared to wait just s little but it will be worth it. There was so much on our plates that our to-go box was an entire meal the next day. We definitely recommend especially for foodies.
google avatar

Cheryl A.

Yelp
Food is great!! Customer service is horrible!! I ordered my food ahead, got there and waited an hour. 4 walk-in's came in after me and we're served their food before me. Asked the waiter about my order, he had a serious attitude. No more, I despise poor customer service!!
google avatar

E S.

Yelp
Service & Food was fantastic. We ordered a variety of different foods in our small party & everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal from the rice to the main course. Their signature drinks are second to none.
google avatar

Wesley L.

Yelp
Not to many choices for Island food in this area...and with that being said the food was pretty decent...many customers complain about the service...which I can agree on...seems like they serve one table at a time...and with food being cooked to order I would expect a semi long wait...but not a 15-20 minute wait time...I repeat food was impressive...and portions were great compared to price...overall I will return again...and just to a word of advice...get appetizers with drinks...makes the time go by lol...side note...jerk ribs were fantastic...wash it down with lemonade...and let the itis kick in lol...

Tom F.

Yelp
Food good... 20 percent gratuity is insane... You work for tips and it's not given if service is sub par... This need to change or make this a take out only spot...
google avatar

Alphonso H.

Yelp
I've heard many positive comments about this place. On a quick trip back home, I decided to stop by around 2:00 p.m. yesterday for (2) to go plate. To my surprise, the parking was full which peaked my excitement. As we parked, we observed customers leaving with orders. The host met us at the entrance and said they were closed and we could come back later that day. It was apparent, they had a significant sized group of people inside. We clearly stated, our order was to go. That didn't matter. Well, I guess Tropical Flava has all the business they need. How can you lock the door on customers as they were about to walk in? Why would we come back if this is the first impression you give? I was furious with the communication and will not go back. How can you close at 2:00pm when your Sunday hours are 1:00-7:00?
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Looking to try something different and affordable and worried about if it is good ... then you should try Tropical Flava ... well worth the visit
google avatar

Margie S.

Yelp
Oh my this is the most under rated restaurant in Macon! Try the ribs, the roast pork, the escovitch red snapper! And the pina colada cake is delicious, but the sweet potato cheesecake is to die for!
google avatar

Zac G.

Yelp
Not bad Jamaican food but not the best in the city in my opinion. Huge portions is what you get here, like enough for two full meals but that comes with a slightly higher bill than other places I've been. The goat tastes good but I'm not a fan of lamb served still attached to the bone, makes for messy eating with all the sauce it's served in. Place was pretty empty when we went for lunch, which was a little surprising based on the fact the operate on Ingleside Drive. I loved the plantains, I would recommend them when you go. TVs in a few spots in the restaurant but I don't think it's a place to go watch "the game" or anything like that. We'll go back next time we're craving Jamaican due to its proximity to our house but there are better places in Macon to get Jamaican food.
google avatar

Lola W.

Yelp
The food is amazing and the people are so nice!!!! My sister got the chocolate cake at the recommendation of our server. I wish I could share the picture of the pure joy in her face. Also the food is a lot. Not something you can eat in one sitting.

Amber M.

Yelp
If I could rate this restaurant 0 stars, I would. If you value great customer service and being a valued, loyal customer, I would absolutely advise you NOT to eat here. Every time I place an order at this restaurant, there is a problem. I called to place an order for pick up.. willing to even understand their wait times for the day. I was told by a gentleman named Melvin, that they were no longer taking orders over the phone for today. When I asked to speak to the manager , he refused to let me speak to the manager over the phone, continuously stating that "they were extremely busy". I had a taste for fish, so I didn't mind ordering at the restaurant to eat THERE, since they were no longer taking orders over the phone. Once at the restaurant, there were only about 4 tables taken where customers sat to eat. I was told that I would not be allowed to meet with the manager for a better understanding, and I was also refused the opportunity to order and eat AT the restaurant. Beyond distraught , I have decided to no longer spend my money at this location, considering the fact that as a business, they act through horrible business practices. The food is already overpriced -- its just not worth the neglect or hassle.
google avatar

Lee A.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. The portions are very generous. Had the jerk pork and it was very well seasoned with just enough heat.
google avatar

Jill C.

Yelp
This is the real deal. Fantastic food. I had the jerk tofu it was the best vegetarian meal I have ever had at a restaurant.

Carita W.

Yelp
I usually really like this place and I come whenever I get a craving for Island food. On Sunday I called in a order and asked the lady how long she said call once you get outside to call in to let them know you are here,so I did 9 mins later when I parked I called told her my name and she hung up abt 30 min later one of the servers delivered the meal to the car next to me so I let my window down told her I placed a order under my name abt 30+ minutes ago and would she check well she got my name and the name of the couple next to me and when she returned she had there orders so I said do you know how long it will be for my order she said something in her other language but anyway I called again and the manager said he was to busy and told me this isn't fast food and I said I've been out here waiting for 45 min. So I'm done with this place there are 2 other island restaurants here. Rude customer service is what you get here and they need to learn true customer service. Keep your rude disrespectful island girls they are going to ruin your business.
google avatar

Vince H.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice, and pretty sure there won't be a third time. The portions are good, the prices are more than the usual jamaican restaurant, and the flavor is nonexistent. If fact, my home cooked jamaican dishes are more flavorful than this "Jamaican " restaurant. Not to mention the cashier, she tried hitting on my wife (calling her Bae). I guess, we will take the trip to Golden Krust from now on!
google avatar

R P.

Yelp
The food is pretty much spot on but the service from the servers is horrible. I think it might be that way from the automatic 20% gratuity charge. When you bill is $40 and gotten better service at Waffle House on a $20 meal, I have a hard time playing 20% and my drink has been empty for most of my meal.
google avatar

Nihar T.

Yelp
Great food and awesome service! The owner James is very personable and was able to answer all my mom's questions with patience as she has very strict dietary needs. They have a lot of vegetarian options which was a nice surprise. I always get their jerk tofu with rice and peas (beans). You also get a nice warm cabbage salad which sounded weird but upon trying it, it instantly became a favorite. The jerk sauce was a nice mix of sweet and heat and the tofu was cooked to perfection! I always take my friends from out of town here as a lot of them have never had Jamaican food, and they have done nothing but sing the restaurant's praises. They don't sell alcohol here but you are welcome to bring your own wine, beer, or spirits. Their fruit punch is made fresh and absolutely the best choice to compliment your meal! Support local business and eat here as it most definitely not going to disappoint!!!

Yelp
AMAZING Caribbean dishes. If you want to have a taste of the Islands, this is the place!
google avatar

Eve A.

Yelp
Staff was nice and friendly. Sanitation and Presentation is a must. Food was nicely plated, taste was okay, rice was dry to some pieces were hard, and the food was not hot enough it was at room temperature. Also, cooks were not using gloves when handling the vegetables and food.
google avatar

Jada W.

Yelp
Ordered takeout.. Jerk chicken with rice and beans stir fried veggies and plantains, food was delicious, seasoned well and was still piping hot when I got home! Also the man who took our orders (forget his name) was nice and explained the menu to us before we ordered.
google avatar

Alexander T.

Yelp
Overall, awesome place with really good food! Positives: As stated, the food was great. I had jerk chicken and my wife had Salmon. My kids shared some pork. The flavor on the jerk was great. The vegetables were like a stir fry assemble. Bright in color and meshed well with the meat. I had the cucumber ginger juice with it. The servers were super friendly. Negatives: the decour is low budget. The bathrooms were clean, but seemed to be put together by a high school kid who just watched a home remodeling show and thought he could do it. Also,....it was slow. We got desert, so that added time, but it took us 2 hours to eat there. Final thoughts...When I go to eat at a little hamlet of a restaurant, I don't expect fancy....I want something unique and really good food. They delivered!

Nancy S.

Yelp
Best restaurant in Macon. My brother used to have business in Warner Robins, he has lived all over the US (and the world) he will tell you Tropical Flava is one of the best restaurants he has been to and insists on going back every time he comes through. If you like fish the escoviche is amazing (vinegar veggies really make it stand out). A universal favorite is the ox tail and a friend visiting from out of town just said the jerk pork ribs were the best he'd ever had. I usually get the stewed chicken but honestly I could live of the black beans and rice and cabbage that comes with every dish. The decor and service are island style so be prepared for that. The owner (James) is incredibly professional and personable. You can always get your food to go and take it across the street to society garden.

Yelp
Strolled in on a hot spring day, party of two. Very comforting atmosphere, helpful and welcoming waiters, and solid air conditioning. Shared the restaurant with a motley crew of high school language teachers and some very jolly-looking gentlemen who walked off with a large bottle of hot sauce. While the menu was slightly overwhelming for newcomers, we got over it due to the helpfulness and liveliness of the waiters and we both settled on the jerk chicken option. Neither of us regretted our choice - the portions were huge and the chicken itself was incredibly well-cooked and well-spiced, although, apparently, a little too much in the spice department for the girl sitting in front of me. Boo. Tropical Flava had a surprisingly diverse selection of sodas which we partook in as well, Kola Champagne being the best and Ting soda tasting very much like a grapefruit spin on Sprite. Both of us tried fried plantains, and neither of us knew what to think. That's all I could say on that matter. Really good. One star off for it not being a portal to another dimension.

Yelp
We ate there last weekend and we were throughly impressed by the tasty dishes and attentive staff/service. I chose the garlic shrimp; it had a large number of good sized shrimp that were perfectly cooked in a yummy garlic sauce. It was served with fried plantain, white rice, and some wonderfully seasoned veggies. The presentation was lovely and the plate was garnished with a colorful onion flower. My companions enjoyed their chicken curry, jerk chicken and jerk pork, very much. We all decided we'd be sure to come back again soon. Management brought us free samples of their in house made fruit juices, which we very savory. But, at about 6 dollars a glass, a little too pricey for my budget.

Yelp
I would be willing to give the restaurant two stars because the presentation of the food was nice and the flavor was decent. However, the overall experience was terrible. After being seates it took about 10 minutes for the waitress to come and introduce herself. Yet, with 2 other wait staff on the floor and only 4 tables seated in the entire restaurant, thats pretty damn pathetic. Upon deciding what we wanted we were told that none of our choices were available. Then the waitress explained that they did have them, but that they do not cook their specialty items unless they have a full restaurant. After placing our order we sat for 1 hour, 43 minutes. The food finally arrived and it was literally drowning in butter. Upon finishing it took another 40 minutes just to run our card. 20 dollars per plate for beef chicken and pork. The restaurant is in a great locale right across from Ingleside Village Pizza. However, even though some of the reviews for this restaurant are 5 star, I have eaten at Waffle House's that season their food better. Eat here at your own risk. You may love it and you may not. Though, we will not visit this restaurant again, unless they make some serious changes.
