This is actually the WORST food Ive ever had. Not even Jamaican food, just worst food in general. As a Jamaican I am very disappointed. The beef patty was bland, and calling it a beef patty is a stretch considering there was barely any beef. The crust was flaky tho. Also the coco bread??? DRY, flat, hard, just overall disgusting. I would give 0 stars if allowed.

Do Think Twice.

Google
Rating based on 2003 to present. This place is legendary when it comes to baked Jamaican cuisine. Their veggie patties are second to none. I can bet on this: you more than likely, haven't tasted a properly seasoned veggie patty purchased, until you have arrived here. I've stopped eating animals by the way, since late 2020 and the veggie patties here, are worth mentioning. Their coco bread is tasty as well. Their raisin croissants are extremely good as well. I've tried these and my taste buds were 🕺🏾🕺🏾🕺🏾. (That's no lie) If you're in the area, try this savory bakery out for yourself. You'll see and taste what folks have been raving about for a long time. Highly recommend!!!!!!! 😇🦢🕺🏾😍

Google
Simple bakery with great customer service and nice tasting treats. Currants roll was rich, pattie dough was softer than I would like but there was a lot of beef. It was the first time that I had a plantain tart. It's too much sweetness for me.

Google
Ive been going here for yrs and they food have just gotten better and better. The patties are always fresh and your in and out unless some real greedy person comes to buy boxes of patties. ..lol but the only reason they don't get 5☆'s is because they're not making fresh coco bread for the patties and i think that's a must SO TODAY IS 4/11/19 AND I REVISITED THIS LOCATION FOR A FEW MONTHS NOW AND I MUST SAY THE QUALITY OF THE PATTIES HAVE GOTTEN BETTER. I USUALLY HAVE THE VEGGIE PATTIES AND THE RECIPE MUST HAVE CHANGED CUZ THEY'RE LESS SPICY AND MORE FLAVORFUL AND ALSO THEY ARE STUFFED NOW WHICH IS ALWAYS GOOD...LOVE THIS PLACE

Google
Their chicken patties are really good, but the service isn’t the best. They also changed their business hours from 11/11:30 am to 12pm. Hours are not posted on the door. I stopped by today (Tuesday) at 12:25pm and it was not open yet. I asked the business owner next door and was told it opens at 12:30pm. Hard to patronize the business if you can’t be sure what time they open or if they’ll open at all.

Google
A grab and go place. I really enjoyed the beef patties here! I would skip the Coco bread, which I didn't think added much to the overall experience. I was kind of surprised that the guy behind the counter was Asian too. Authentic joint though.

Google
Stop reading fam and just make the journey over for they beef patty on coco bread. No joke, it’s so fresh, cheap and delicious you gonna wish you ordered more… so just order more!

Google
No frills bakery that serves up some of the most delicious meat patties I've ever tasted. Leave the car at home because you're more likely to catch a double parking ticket while you order since parking is non existent. If you're craving some really good patties, take the subway to Utica Avenue; the joint is only half a block from the exit at Schenectady Avenue.

Yelp
I came in yesterday to pick up some patties for the first time after seeing the reviews. To my surprise seemed to be an authentic Jamaican Bakery selling patties, fresh baked breads and an assortment of other baked goods. I ordered both chicken and beef patties for my family and we enjoyed them both especially the beef patty. It really is the best patties in Bklyn. The fresh baked hard dough bread was nice and fresh as well. The service was also very expedited and the ambience is typical of a bakery with the aroma of fresh baked goods.. Give them a try. Yelp
After seeing a post on IG I decided to try the beef pattie and coco bread. The crust was soft and flakey but in my opinion, the filling was just ok. The coco bread was soft, fluffy and warm. I also bought a currant roll, which was filled with currants, flakey crust and was really delicious.

Yelp
Get the beef patty with cheese. It's so good. I asked for a few beef patties, and somehow, the one with cheese was in the bag. I'm very glad it was in the bag, as I will make sure to get the beef patty with cheese the next time I visit.

Miggie S.

Yelp
This place is legendary for its Jamaican food. My favorite is the beef patties & coco bread.

Aisha J.

Yelp
First time in NYC my boyfriend said I had to try the beef Pattie's OMG these suckers are delicious. Full of flavor I prefer the beef vice the chicken (was curry flavored with potatoes). Requested a dozen frozen so I can take back with me to Florida. I am told the bread is made daily it shows was very fresh and soft. Grocery store is right beside it and no parking of course so doubled parked was out in less than 5 minutes.

Yelp
So I have this running competition with some friends... I think the best beef patties can be found in Brooklyn.. They think the best patties are found in the Bronx. Now I humored them and tried one of the patties from the BX.. and I have admit it was good. So I searched and searched and found this Bk spot.. I had high hopes from the reviews I read.. The patties looked okay and guess what tasted good too.... But.. there is always but. They were stingy with the portion of meat in the patties. There simply was not enough meat in the patties. I had a mouth full of bread and not enough meat. They should visit this practice. For now the Bronx us holding strong.

Yelp
* CASH ONLY* Ordered a beef patty w coco bread but No warm coco bread was waiting for me. It wasn't horrible but wasn't my favorite place in the world to come get me a beef patty. Bread was a little dry and kind of stale. The patty had an ok amount of filling and was a little sweet.

Niah C.

Yelp
Wayyyyyy better than commercial patties. They're fresh and the bread OMG. The hard dough bread is made on-site so if you time it right, you'll get a fresh one and it's amazing. The recipe reminds me of Gig Young. I used to love that bakery growing up. Service is great too btw. They're never rude or nasty to customers. They take card and cash too now, which is perfect because a lot of times I don't have cash.

Jesiah J.

Yelp
AMAZING SERVICE! My Dad always would bring me,my mom and my brothers here when i was kid. Best 23yrs of my life.

Yelp
Tropical House Baking is located in the heart of Crown Heights (close to Eastern Parkway) and within close proximity to other Caribbean bakeries. The prices are a moderate. I ordered a beef patty for $3.00 and veggie patty for $2.75. Both tasted freshly made. Surprisingly, the veggie patty tasted better than the beef patty. The veggie patty was well seasoned. Although good, the beef patty was moderately seasoned and could've used more heat (spice). The restaurant is takeout only; there's no indoor or outdoor dining. Staff and patrons are separated by a protective glass shield. Service is very fast. Regarding payment options, I'm not sure if Tropical House Baking accepts card payment because I paid with cash.

Yelp
Really don't get the hype? Patties are severely lacking in flavor. Cocoa bread very dry. I had the beef and the veggie. The veggie pattie was bland and I can't stand a million peas inside my pattie. The beef was also very bland and dry. The crust which is my favorite part was flavorless and dry. I had high hopes but I will stick to Tastee Pattee.

Jay T.

Yelp
Duck bread, duck bread, duck bread! Soft, scrumptious, perfect taste and texture. Excellent, delicious, hearty and always consistently good. I Strongly recommend you purchase their duck bread. Their patties are also delicious. Parking is tricky in the area, so call to make sure they're open before you arrive. Enjoy!

Geraldine E.

Yelp
I usually buy chicken patties. I don't know why I chose beef but nonetheless it was still worth it. The patty was fresh and juicy. You can tell it was freshly made compared to other patty places that have them their for hours. It had a hint of spice. The o lot reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is because the place looks a little dingy probably it's been there for many years. I'll definitely go back to these nearby bakery. Also it's cash only.

Yelp
Lately, I seem to be developing a thing for savory turnovers. First it was empanadas. From BK's lovely Empanada City, to be exact. And now patties from here: So yeah... Tried both the Chicken and Veggie Patties, and the former was definitely the winner. Especially its perfectly seasoned (read: not shy with either allspice or scotch bonnets), generous filling. The Veggie Patty was stuffed with a random-seeming mix of vegetables that included potatoes, peas, and corn, if memory serves. Filling was on the bland side; not really sure why Veggie Patties are never kicked up in the same way as the meat ones. It also featured the usual whole wheat style crust that so often encases Veggie Patties. Not a big fan. Plus they don't do Callaloo Patties here for some reason... But I digress. Interior is as tiny and closet-summoning as others have alluded to and the bullet-proof glass window that separates staff and customers is no joke. I found that it made it near impossible to communicate with the employee who was helping us, as I had some questions about some of the menu items I wasn't familiar with. Speaking of which, also tried some mystery Spice Bread that had great flavor, but was on the dry side. Bottom line: Would definitely return for more Chicken Patties and also to try the Beef-filled ones.

Victor D.

Yelp
Me and my family have been going to this Bakery since the 80s. It's quite possibly theee best place on planet Earth to get freshly baked beef patties. The taste, smell, flaky soft golden crust and spices haven't changed in over 30yrs. If you're looking for a place to taste real Jamaican beef patties look no further, this is the real deal, best you'll ever try.

Manual W.

Yelp
The beef and chicken Pattie's are amazing. Wow! The crust is beyond perfect! The beef filling is genuine ground beef! Not too spicy, perfect for me! Definitely the best patty in all of New York City hands down 100%

Christopher V.

Yelp
Listen Once you have a beef patty from here . Every other beef patty is no where near as good! This place has the best beef patty . I've ever had . My to go place from now on!

Daniel C.

Yelp
One of the best places to get a beef patty!!! This hole in the wall might not look like much on the outside but when you walk you in you can smell the fresh delicious patties that are being made. All there patties are made in house. The patties are delicious, they don't skimp in the filling and they are flavorful!!The patties are scolding hot!! Be careful!!! Even waiting thirty minutes for it to cool it still is burning hot!

Yelp
I am very nostalgic to this place, I've been attending Tropical house since the age of 10 years old. There has been a long length of time since I've been back but I always remember eating the best Beef Patty I've every eaten from there and always hold them in very high regard. Today was the first time I've been back in a very long time. I've always told my coworkers this is the best patty you can find in NYC if not the country.... brought a couple patties back to work and they totally agree with me. Please remember this is off of a long 10+ year lay off of not making time to go back to Tropical House. I will make it my duty to continue to support this business no matter the distance of where I live and work. Thank you for supplying the community with a consistent patty over the past 20+ years.

Yelp
Dem patties jamaican me craaazy! Have just one, and every time you walk down Schenectady, you'll "FOLLOW YOUR NOSE!" Cause trust me- it WILL know! A one month sublet round the corner - AND being confined to crutches, has meant scouring Schenectady and the surrounding Utica perimeters (Last stop on the 4 train) for some good local treats. Even if it's a little something something to silence that hungry grrrrowl! While I've had Jamaican patties from your wah-wah-wah Golden Krust variety (multiple locations) to some random bakeries and food joints around Brooklyn (even along both Flatbush & Nostrand), boys and grrrls...(drumroll please~...) I CROWN these: THE BOMB! Baffled to see not a single review, I had to do a little extra sleuthing ... Dennis Young is "Jamasian"- a Chinese Jamaica. Speaking to his Korean wife, I found out this humble little bakery stand (it's all point and take away- no sit and eat) has been around for close to 30 years (29 and change)! I've thoroughly enjoyed my AHA moments while seated on a nearby Eastern Parkway bench savoring every tasty bite of those curry-inspired chicken patties. They're my faaaave AND... the best $1.50 you'll find yourself spending here in Brooklyn!~ Too, I've decided it makes PERFECT sense: 1. HOW one might master the art of the Jamaican patty in 3 decades 2. WHY their assortment of baked goods can be found locally within grocery stores 3. WHY this Crown Heights gem is a must-try!! While there's a large variety of breads (coco!) and treats, I'm always blinded by my passion for these patties! They're always oven hot, baked and NOT fried, and service behind the glass window is always uber-friendly! Preferring my crust less crunchy, and more hearty, one look at these picture-perfect golden pockets, and you too will be running this way for some homemade Jamaican goodness!

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Strongly in the running for Best Crown Heights Pattie, The dough is a smidge tougher than Silver Krust, which in this case is a good thing, as Silver Krust's excessive flakiness and tenderness has a little bit of a too-French feeling. The filling is savory and meaty. The patties are just the right size to offer the perfect filling-to-crust ration in every bite. The coconut tarts are delicious as well, with a strong hit of spice that lets you know you're eating Caribbean. You can tell this restaurant has seen 30 years of Crown Heights michegas because the friendly staff is completely encased in industrial-strength bullet-proof glass, but the food that comes through the turntable makes you glad they've survived this long and hope the encroaching gentrification doesn't kill the excellent long-time businesses on Schenectady Ave.

Kenny C.

Yelp
You order through bullet proof glass and place your money into a revolving platform. Delicious, juicy, moist, fluffy, are all accurate descriptions of their patties. Unlike other beef patties I had, you can actually see the pieces of ground beef when you bite inside. They are just peppery enough to have you wanting more but not so much that your mouth burns. Always served piping hot, careful if you may burn your mouth. They also serve veggie and chicken patties, I liked the beef the most They also have a large selection of sweet pastries. I enjoyed the currant roll, almoat like raisin bread. Their giant coconut macaroon was moist and chewy. Coco bread is just bread that's slightly sweet, didn't taste any coco or coconut Homemade ginger beer was had plenty of ginger but was much too sweet and not very carbonated At 1.50 a patty, I'll definitely be back!

Ces A.

Yelp
The best bakery in Crown Heights Brooklyn....period. The patties are all delish had them all. The service is great and everything is made fresh daily fresh baked breads.... what else could you want???

Jessica B.

Yelp
So I was born and raised in Crown Heights and I think I only went to this bakery once as a child--I don't know why we didn't go more but better late than never. I was actually playing around with the Yelp app and tapped the monocle feature (you tilt your phone and nearby business pop up) and saw Tropical House Bakery. Tropical House Bakery is an Asian-Jamaican bakery where you can get your savory and sweet island baked goods. After reading the reviews, I bookmarked it to try the next time I'm home. I'm really glad I checked this place out! It's a no-frills place--can comfortably hold three people at a time and as mentioned in other reviews, you have to place your order through the bulletproof glass; you place your money in the box thingy and swivel it to the other side to get your food. I ordered two beef patties, two chicken patties and one veggie patty with coco bread. I didn't get to try the chicken and veggie patties (step-father ate them...grrr) but the beef patty was on point. It was nice and spicy with a flaky but not too flaky crust, which is just the way I like it. I'll definitely get more the next time I'm home--I'll just have to do a better job hiding them ;-).

Yelp
Great patties, along with everything else. I grew up in Bed Study and went to Tropical House since I was a baby (I'm in my late thirties now). I no longer live in NYC, but visited my family this weekend. We stocked up with DOZENS of patties and other baked goods. Besides the patties, I love the Totoes ("toe-toes"). I do miss the Coconut Bread, which they stopped making years ago.

Jean L.

Yelp
Quick and dependable. They have a variety of items whether you want duck bread, various types of patties including a veggie party, and drinks. It's no frills. A narrow takeout spot with no sit down area. Food is cheap and good. Cant go wrong

Johnny G.

Yelp
Co-worker just brought in a batch of Jamaican Patties from this place. I have to say these were one of the best patties I have ever encountered. I usually do not review unless I taste a few different items from the menu, luckily there was a variety. We had the Chicken, the beef, and the veggies. The crust was firm but moist. The filling was perfect, well seasoned and fresh. I recommend this restaurant and I am definitely going back for more. Especially during the Holiday Season!

Teresa S.

Yelp
I bypassed my usual beef patty spot in Brooklyn to try this new one and was pissed. LOL. I wasnt put off by the bullet-proof glass divider because safety comes first. What I was put off by was the untasty patties and hard ass coco bread. The patties reminded me of the frozen patties you get in the supermarket. I am sorry because I saw the rave reviews on Yelp and couldnt believe what was in my mouth when I tasted them. Shockingly I enjoyed the veggie patty better than the beef. Next time I want my mouthwatering spicy patties I will trek it to my regulart spot at "Pitkin Caribbean Bakery."

Bklynette F.

Yelp
Best beef patties in brooklyn. You can buy em frozen too and theyb aste just as good when heated in an oven. Been going for 25 Years.

Kristal W.

Yelp
One of many hidden gems in Crown Heights. Delicious patties. Not a very welcoming environment, but who cares.. you dip in get your food real quick and bounce. CASH ONLY!

Nyota W.

Yelp
I'm not used to going to bakeries with bulletproof glass. I'm not saying they don't exist, I just tend not to visit them. With that said, one day while craving a beef patty and missing the taste of the homemade patties that my grandmother used to make, I ventured in to find a little lady behind lots of glass and a line that almost extended to the sidewalk (that last point is a pretty good sign). I ordered a beef patty though there were many other options on the menu. It was recently baked and hit the hunger spot. For a $2 snack it wasn't bad, but I wasn't overwhelmed. I wouldn't run past this place, but wouldn't exactly run to it either. Again I'm biased and was comparing it to beef patties of the past filled with love and bundled in nostalgia. Totally not a fair comparison, but it's my reference point.

K J.

Yelp
Best patties you can find in Brooklyn, definitely puts golden crust off the map. Fresh, meaty, light crust

Jeanelle F.

Yelp
The best beef patties in Brooklyn! Bring cash. I highly recommend the beef patty with coco bread and a kola champagne. Respect.

Daniel B.

Yelp
I've only tried the chicken, beef, and veggie patties, but they have been hot, fresh, and delicious every time. I would have never known if it wasn't for Yelp since the place looks so run down and is basically a hole in the wall. Do not let its appearance deceive you, give it a try, and you will be not regret it.

Tiffany S.

Yelp
I've been going here for 17 yrs. Everything is delicious from the pudding, bulla, patties. One of my many fav resturants in bk

Darren N.

Yelp
Beef Patty = Great. Chicken Patty = AWESOME. This place is around the corner from a beautiful Catholic Church and is wedged between two larger business with big awnings. The beef, chicken and veggie patties are all $1.70. They are great for such a cheap price. A girl could eat two, and a guy can be stuffed with 3. There is a surprising punch of spice when you bite into the chicken patty, I highly recommend you try all three.

Claudia J.

Yelp
After all the great reviews, my daughter and I stopped in and purchased beef patties, coco bread, sweet potato pudding, and cola champagne. The best tasting thing was the drink of course! If you're a true Jamaican, or someone from the Caribbean you will know what I'm talking about. The patties had a sweet taste almost like a ketchup flavor. The pudding had barely any flavor or sweetness to it. Our whole meal went in the trash after a single bite of each. Twenty bucks wasted.

Tresha W.

Yelp
This place is definitely a "hole in the wall" and behind thick plexi glass they serve patties and I'm not sure what else.... That's all I saw available. You can't get anything to drink here and they only accept cash. They have piles of papers stacked high on the counters but the patties were tasty. They had a good ratio of pastry to meat which is a sign of a good patty to me which is why they get 3 stars instead of 2.

Jason H.

Yelp
That was easily the freshest & best vegetable pattie that I've ever had. So so so so so many vegetables in it, and it stayed hot throughout me eating it. The chicken pattie is really good, with a nice kick of spiciness to it. The patties are only $1.85 apiece, which is cheaper than most places, with far better quality. These are not made in a factory patties! The coco bread is good, just a little small. This is my new pattie spot, which I make an excuse to go out of my way to get to when I come to Brooklyn.

Dizzle B.

Yelp
Managed to swing by during my short trip for GGG vs. Jacobs (great fight) and had another shot at their beef patty, and tried their chicken patty and plantain dessert (pie? tart?). It's been over (2) years since I've last tried their beef patty and it's better than I remember and the pastry was perfect, so, this is definitely the best beef patty I've tried so far in Brooklyn...even had a bit of spicy kick that I didn't remember but really enjoyed. I tried the chicken patty for the first time and it was excellent as well with a pronounced curry flavor and spice. This place is consistent based on my limited experience and it's no surprise that there's always a line here.

Andrea S.

Yelp
Best vegetable patties in this region. Real authentic. You can identify the contents.

Tia N.

Yelp
This place is not glamorous but I could careless!!! I get my hair done in Brooklyn so every time I come to Brooklyn I need to get some Caribbean food since Harlem is seriously deprived in the Caribbean section...... Long story short this place good next time I'm in BK I will be buying a dozen frozen chicken patties

Richard J.

Yelp
Best. Patties. Ever! The meat is so moist and plentiful. Yea...they're not stingy on the meat over here lol. The dough is so tender and it blends so well with the seasoned meat. Oh. My. God. If this is what heaven taste like, I promise I'll never sin again.

Simmi N.

Yelp
Dennis!!! The best of everything! Been coming here for thirty years...nothing better for Jamaican baked goods. Nowhere better in Brooklyn. Love Dennis and his family.

Crystal I.

Yelp
I was in the area for work and googled the closest patty restaurant in the area. I read the previous yelp reviews so I was not surprised to find a bullet proof glass. I was surprised to find out that is run by Jamaicans of Asian decent. The patty was very good. I ordered a mild beef patty, which was very tasty. I would say this place is definitely better than Golden Krust. If I am in there area, I am definitely coming back!

Nneka U.

Yelp
Hands down, the best patties you will ever have. Golden Krust who?? This is a Caribbean bakery joint owned by Chinese Jamaicans. I'll admit, part of the reason I like coming to this spot is because I love hearing the Jamaican accents of the Chinese owners. But know that I keep coming back here because the food is really bomb.com...I usually get a pattie (beef or chicken) and some coco bread. And it's hella cheap! I'm talking less than $3 cheap! They also have all the Caribbean bakery items that my West Indian fam reminisce about when they were youngins. Breadfruit, coconut cake, sugar buns... Trust me, this is a spot to hit up if your cash flow is low, but your stomach doesn't know (I rhymed, haha...and yes, it was intentional...sue me! Lol!)

P H.

Yelp
Decor: 3.5/5 -The place is bullet-proof. The transfer food and money, there is a bullet-proof turn table lol Service: 3.5/5 -very friendly Asian lady Food: 5/5 -Whoa! The Beef patties were great, stuffed with ground meat and only $1.50 each! Two were fairly filling

Sharon K.

Yelp
I never ordered my patties from the other side of bullet proof glass before. It was kind of off putting and made me feel like should I really be here?! The answer was yes. The veggie patties were really good and cheap. I would not stop here if I wasn't passing it, but I am glad I made the stop.

Gwendolyn H.

Yelp
Visited this place today to taste what the hype was all about regarding their beef patties. As one who was brought up on Christies Beef Patties (which used to be on Flatbush and Sterling), these could not compare at all--the crust wasn't even crispy--mmm mmm I am let down!! Y'all keep enjoying those! To each his own...
