16 Iconic New Orleans Cocktails and Where to Find Them

"Although throwing back one (or more) hand grenades will surely lead to questionable decision-making, the distinctively shaped plastic cups are ubiquitous on Bourbon Street. Live music, fun atmosphere & drinks! What can be better?! We had a blast checking out Tropical Isle AND we got to try the OG hand grenade. What made it even better was there was a skinny version that had less sugar for us diabetics. High key, if you’re ever there, get the peanuts THEY’RE SO FREAKING GOOD!

Google
Sat at the bar and they had a great live band. Our bartender was great and the place was super cool. Highly recommend the hand gernades and the shark attack we had a lot of fun 😁

Google
Tropical Isle is a fun spot with a lively atmosphere, but the Hand Grenade drink felt overhyped. It was way too sugary, and after having three, I didn’t feel much of a kick. If you like sweet drinks, you might enjoy it, but it wasn’t for me. That said, the bar itself has a great vibe and is a fun place to hang out.

Google
There are no superlatives to describe this drink - it has to be experienced first hand. We ordered the frozen variant. I had relatively low expectations but from the first sip it blew me away. The top secret formula of a myriad of spirits and liqueurs laced with a sugary kick combine for a flavour explosion. A guaranteed headache - it will leave you ducking for cover the next morning. Labeled as the most powerful drink in New Orleans it certainly packs a punch - if you drink these all night there’s a high possibility you could wake up in Mexico! The bar staff here were really friendly. And took a photo of us in front of the large smoking grenade. Walking down Bourbon Street drinking one of these fellas is a must do experience. You haven’t been to NOLA unless you’ve had a few of these!

Google
The hand grenade drink is extremely good I suggest trying it. My wife and I really enjoy sitting on the deck watching all the excitement down on Bourbon street

Google
friendly service but we did feel a little pushed to upgrade our drinks to large. still worth $13 per frozen drink with take home cup. they go all out when you order the shark drink! music was loud and familiar songs, videos playing were interesting. bathrooms could have been a lot better, probably standard for the area.

We had a really good time, had a hand grenade made specially by Jimmy!! Jimmy did a great job. We look forward to seeing you again sometime soon.! Go get a hand grenade!

Google
This was my first experience in New Orleans and Tim did not fail to make it a great one!!! We stopped by around lunch time and had the best conversations with Tim and the other patrons! I can't wait to go back again. Additionally, the environment was just fun even in the middle of the day. They had great music playing and very unique decor.

Yelp
Tropical Isle is a lively bar located in the heart of the French Quarter, famous for its signature drinks and vibrant atmosphere. It's a great spot to grab a cocktail and enjoy the lively energy of New Orleans. What We Tried: * Hand Grenade: Tropical Isle is best known for its Hand Grenade cocktail, a potent and refreshing drink served in a signature plastic grenade-shaped cup. It's a must-try for anyone visiting the bar, and it packs a punch with its fruity flavors and strong kick. I grabbed the Hand Grenade with a shot, and it was mighty good! I was told not to leave New Orleans without having one, and I'm so glad I did. Atmosphere: The vibe at Tropical Isle is always fun and energetic, with music playing and people enjoying drinks on the lively streets of the French Quarter. It's a great place to people-watch and soak in the vibrant New Orleans scene. Whether you're just popping in for a drink or planning to stay for a while, the atmosphere is perfect for a casual, fun time. Service: The service is quick and friendly, with bartenders who know how to mix a great drink. It's a busy spot, but the staff is efficient, making sure everyone is served quickly. Pro Tips: * Try the Hand Grenade: If you're visiting for the first time, definitely try the Hand Grenade. It's their signature drink and a favorite among locals and tourists alike. * Grab a Souvenir Cup: You can take home the signature grenade cup as a souvenir, and refills are cheaper when you bring it back! Overall Thoughts: Tropical Isle is a fun, no-frills spot to enjoy a drink in the French Quarter. It's perfect for a casual night out, and the Hand Grenade is a must-try drink if you're in the area. Whether you're stopping by for a quick drink or planning to hang out for a while, it's a great place to soak in the energy of New Orleans. I didn't stick around inside the place; I grabbed my drink and enjoyed it as we walked down Bourbon Street!

Yelp
Someone told me that we had to get hand grenades in NOLA so we finally got the time to check out Tropical Isle as our last bar stop of the trip. The bar itself isn't huge but it does have some tables along the sides for you to sit/stand with your group. They have a stage behind the bar where there was live music playing when we were there. You could even put a song request in. The bar wasn't too crowded when we arrived (Saturday/Sunday around midnight). We got a round of hand grenades for the group. Each hand grenade comes with a little grenade toy which you can try to shoot in the net above the bar (no prize, just for fun). They also had other fun drinks available like the shark attack which had a whole show going when they present the drink to you. The hand grenade is almost like a tokyo tea but a lot sweeter. Think of it like a melon jolly rancher in slushy form. Delicious, but definitely drink that water to avoid the sugar headache the next morning. Grab a grenade and stay for awhile or pick one up en route to other stops on Bourbon St!

Yelp
A great bar with a fun vibe! The bartender, Tim was uber-friendly and the "Hand Grenade" drink will put you on your butt if you're not careful! A great time....
google avatar

Yelp
Another spot NOLA spot I was happy to visit again. The hand grenades are still delicious and strong. Definitely something everyone that comes to Nola should experience if you're 21 and older.

Yelp
Had a great time at Tropical Isle last month. Love the Hand Grenades and Horny Gators! Our bartender was super fun and accommodating. I'm not sure if they serve food, but we did have some awesome pistachios. Awesome divey type bar in the French Quarter!
google avatar

Yelp
Deceivingly small when you enter. The bar, the live entertainment stage, it seems like there is not much going on here. Go upstairs and enter a new world. There is another large bar up there, an air hockey table, and more. The best part is the view outside overlooking Bourbon Street. Food? Do they even have any here? They are known for their "Shark Attack" and "Hand Grenade" drinks. I believe, I chose unwisely with the Shark Attack. Yes, they do a fun thing at the bar - including throwing crushed ice into the room - when it is ordered but, wow, not a match for my taste.

Yelp
Ended up on bourbon street and decided to stumble into tropical isle to grab a drink as we continued to people watch. The security guard was very friendly and the drinks were very strong. The place itself has a very cool electric tropical vibe with all the neon lights and timey collections of things hanging from the walls. It's actually pretty neat, they have a bunch of Knick knacks and photos all over haha. Note: they don't take Apple or google pay!

Yelp
Sunday,  I was highly disappointed with my hand grenade from  the popular tropical isle. I don't understand the hype for this drink. I tried it on the rocks - no buzz. My man tried it as a slushy - no buzz. I didn't really enjoy the taste of it either. I'm not a picky person, but I honestly regret this purchase. I believe it was $12 each and $10 for refills (which we did not use). The host was pleasant and straight to the point. There is nothing much to say about her service. We were in and out of there in less than 5 minutes. The inside was too dark so we decided to continue our stroll vs sitting. I would encourage folks to try other daiquiri locations with better tasting options.
google avatar

Mariah M.

Yelp
Straight to the point, this place is "thee" place to go on Bourbon Street. Call it a tourist hotspot lol, and the girls and I marked it off of our Mardi Gras bucket list but -- the grenades were received, and the party continued. Loveee Tropical Isle! Much love to them from the DMV.
google avatar

Trice O.

Yelp
It's on Bourbon street and famous for their Hand Grenades! A hand grenade is a cocktail made with gin, vodka, rum, grenadine and some other flavors. Tropical Isle is a walk up bar so we stood in line for about 5 minutes and ordered two hand grenades. The ambiance was filled with neon lights and a live band played behind the bar. We walked out of the bar sipping our hand grenades on Bourbon street. The drink tasted really good and I barely noticed there was alcohol inside....until about halfway through the drink...boy oh boy, the effects of that drink creeped up on me! This made for a more enjoyable time strolling and partying on Bourbon street! I definitely plan to return for another on!

Yelp
This place is your local watering hole in the French Quarter. There are many bars and places to get drinks, but I love their frozen grenade drink. It's always a must when I come to New Orleans. The service is quick and easy, both during peak and non-peak times, and the ambiance is cool. They have three locations that I'm aware of in the French Quarter, and I think two of them have live bands at some point during the day. It's pretty neat. Love it there--always my first stop.
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
New Orleans is known for their "Hand Grenade" cocktail whether it's frozen or on the rocks. You can find that here at Tropicale Isle! I myself hated the cocktail it's OVERLY TOO SWEET! I rather drink The Shark every single time! If you're Colombian it tastes exactly like a Kola Postobon Jarred the bartender was the best! They have live band from time to time and their music is a great vibe. Mainly people just pass by to get their Hand Grenade cocktail and out and about as you can drink all over the street of New Orleans. Highly Recommended!
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
The holy hand grenade! This was our first time trying the famous cocktail and it was a hoot! The bar is tiki-style and it's super easy to walk up and order. The hand grenade is a sugary cocktail with a secret recipe and it's honestly very tasty, though very strong. We also tried a shark attack that comes with a toy shark that bleeds into the drink and a whole performance from the bartender. It's just a super fun place overall and one you should visit when bar hopping in New Orleans!
google avatar

Janice K.

Yelp
We stopped into the bar on 700 Bourbon Street during our first visit to New Orleans. It became our favorite place during our 4 day trip. We enjoyed the happy hour, the band Rhythm and Rain, and our amazing bartenders- Marti and Jimmy. We commented that it felt like the Cheers bar because everyone was so friendly and Marti and Jimmy remembered our drink orders. The music and the those who follow R&R were amazing - laughter, and conversations were wonderful with all the staff and patrons. Can't say enough good things about the reasonably priced cold drinks and the new friends we made at the hand grenade bar. Looking forward to our return visit. I love this bar.
google avatar

Marcella N.

Yelp
A must when you're in New Orleans! You've got to try a hand grenade here. It's super delicious and very unique. I guarantee you haven't had anything like it. It's a secret recipe, so beware (you'll be fine if you don't overdo it). It's a lot of alcohol so be careful and share with someone first. Everyone thinks that's a joke until they have too much. Service was quick and came with a warning! Ambience is super cool. Has a tiki, ocean, jungle vibe.
google avatar

Shea M.

Yelp
This location is easier to get to and quicker to get through. Can't go wrong with the hand grenade for the aesthetics but you will likely have a headache the next morning lol. All of us definitely did, it was good though as expected.
google avatar

Bryce M.

Yelp
I was in New Orleans over the weekend and I was craving a Handgrenade on the rocks so I went to the bar where it was invented. I have been coming to Tropical isle for years and it is always a unique experience. Expect the unexpected. Our bartender was really cool and very nice. The atmosphere is wacky! If you are looking for a quit and romantic bar then Tropical isle is not the place. It's a Bourbon street party place! If you are craving the strongest drink on bourbon st ( Handgrenade ) then this the place. Will be back!
google avatar

Tanisha H.

Yelp
Yes every single time to my hand grenade!! I love this drink. It's so good but I can't have more than 1 lol
google avatar

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
did you really come to new orleans if you didn't try a hand grenade? i don't think so
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
Getting a hand grenade is a just in NOLA. The bartender was super friendly. You can get your drink frozen or on the rocks. The hand grenade drink has a sweet and bit of sour taste to it. The name truly says it all. --It's no joke. We stopped in during the afternoon and it was a quick stop at your typical Bourbon Street bar. --Bar seating, live music, gigantic beverages.
google avatar

Ryan T.

Yelp
Had excellent service. Bartender I believe was William!! Man what a great dude! A1 personality and service!! Served my crew from Los Angeles with excellent attitude and fast service no Questions asked! Hand grenade is a must!
google avatar

George T.

Yelp
Couldn't come to New Orleans and not try a grenade, although I don't drink sweet drinks. It was worth the experience. The price was right, plus I got the keepsake cup, and it had a nice little buzz. They also had a live band. I was told they make the best grenades. I wasn't disappointed.
google avatar

Sandra V.

Yelp
A must in New Orleans! We heard the hype about the infamous "hand grenades", so we had to try one. And yes, they live up to the hype! They're so good! And yes, they are strong... Do not let the tasty drink fool you! The bar was dimmed and nicely decorated, and it is a walk-up bar. The service was fast, but we did come early.
google avatar

Jeneen P.

Yelp
I have NO DAMN IDEA how to describe this place in the French Quarter outside of OUTSTANDING and WEIRD! So you can order a Hand Grenade, which is a secret drink with tons of liquor frozen or on the rocks for $12 and the refills $10. I had so many I dont remember. It has an apple taste and something else but YALL THE BOMB. The music was by request to a live band that accept tips! Our bartender was the sweetest! I went back to her every night I will most definitely be back!
google avatar

Sierra W.

Yelp
Good place to get a famous hand grande! Very friendly and the atmosphere was very pleasant. Drink was very good went down fast!
google avatar

Felicia I.

Yelp
When in New Orleans, you gotta get a grenade! Now to describe the flavor it's kinda sweet with a sour taste, but you can get it on the rocks or frozen. I noticed this time around getting it frozen, it lightens that taste just a little, but as you get to the bottom it becomes very sour. If a grenade is something you prefer not to indulge in, you can also get a regular drink since it's a bar. The staff is always friendly, sometimes there's a live band & they have a monitor where you can select a song & have it played for $1. There are two Tropics, about a block or so apart however this is the only one I go to & you should check it out too. It's a fun time!
google avatar

Kristen J.

Yelp
Of course I HAD to make a stop (actually multiple) stops at this iconic NOLA bar. We went here once to hang out inside (not a lot going on inside but has chill vibes) and once at a different location to do takeaway grenades. Boy do they pack a punch! Nothing feels more fun strolling down Bourbon Street with one of these down your hand.
google avatar

Angela B.

Yelp
First time in New Orleans and I was told I had to get the grenades. Tony our server was so nice. We were talking about places we visited and all. I got the grenade on the rocks but it was so much better as a slushy. People in here were so friendly & we had great conversations with everyone. Love the music and the decor. The big grenade went off and it was so cool.
google avatar

Markiesa B.

Yelp
Of course I had to make a stop here before leaving New Orleans. I've had one before and enjoyed it so I went back again. Service was quick and easy as usual. The bartender was friendly and helpful and looked good! This is a must stop place whenever you visit New Orleans on bourbon street.
google avatar

Mei T.

Yelp
These Skinny Grenades are "da bomb!" My colleagues and I walked around the French Quarter and got a little thirsty. Rather than water, we opted for a drink. They have it available on ice or frozen. We got ours frozen and boy were they good! $12 cash for a very large drink. We were 3 very happy tourists!
google avatar

Precious E.

Yelp
Location great right on bourbon street with other hot spots! Had this place bookmark and came right in.. came Not pt way the famous grande but I got a small since I'm bar hoping tonight and wanted to enjoy the walk.. fasts e ice and great drink.. might order another one
google avatar

Kaylee G.

Yelp
Good drinks For what it is it's good. I'm glad we got to experience it took a little bit to get the drinks however it's understandable because the place was busy impact. Definitely recommend
google avatar

Megana V.

Yelp
Go big or go home. This dangerously strong drink is a NOLA classic. With 4 different alcohols it's no joke. The crazy thing is that you couldn't taste the alcohol AT ALL. It tasted like starburst and pineapple juice!!! It also hits hard but has a delayed reaction which was wild. The craziest part was that there was no hangover! Is Nola magical?!? Idk but this drink might be...
google avatar

Kelly A.

Yelp
I read about a famous drink called the shark attack, which isn't just a drink but an experience! I'm not going to ruin it for you, but it's hilarious! Is it kitschy? Yes? Is it fun? Absolutely!! But I think it's because our bartender was spectacular! He absolutely loves his job and you can tell! So much enthusiasm, super chill, talks to everyone. Super friendly. I cannot overstate the awesomeness that was our bartender! We just loved him! There are several locations, but this was by far the coolest and best decorated. Best ambiance. Lots of goofy things hanging from the ceiling.
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
Super fun bar and definitely deserves a visit when spending time in NOLA. The hand grenade will get you *lit*. Super tropical, fun vibe. We were served pretty quickly and we both really enjoyed our drinks. I don't have any complaints! 5/5
google avatar

Latrice A.

Yelp
Tick tock and mini YouTube videos told me to patronize this place in order to get the tourist recommended hand grenade. The ladies I worked in the bar was so nice. She let me try the hand grenade on the rocks and also try it frozen and something called the skinny and the regular. I believe I went with the regular which had real sugar. And I went with the option that was frozen and it was really good. Really sweet. Upon finishing the drink. Definitely catches up with you. You think you just have a sweet daiquiri but whatever's in it has a very slow pungent punch that will make you tipsy and it's really cost of active. A small was only $10
google avatar

Alyssa Y.

Yelp
Walking down Bourbon Street. We were on the lookout for a drink to keep us going. There are an endless amount of options you can choose from wandering down the road. We popped into a few that were either extremely loud or overly packed. By the time we got to this location of tropical Isle on the further end of Bourbon Street, the crowds had started to thin out a bit so it was easy to go in and grab a drink. We opted for some hand grenades. These drinks are touted as being some of the strongest in New Orleans but I would say that's a significant stretch. While tasty and fun to carry around the glasses, it seem that you were paying for the tourist experience rather than actual alcohol. The location wasn't too packed, they had a band playing, and we were served quickly. It was still a definite Bourbon Street experience, but not quite as crazy as what was going on a block or two down. I would recommend this location over the other tropical isles that we passed on the way.
google avatar

Dee V.

Yelp
Fun bar with some fun drinks! Loud and exciting and the grenades were delicious. No line to get in. We were served fast.

Angel M.

Yelp
Bartender was extremely out of line, the drinks were weak didn't even taste like it had any alcohol in it at all and that says a lot because I don't drink. Terrible ambience. And they severed two minors the same time as us, i know because i came with them....overall shit place literally go anywhere else, i truly hope the get shut down. Bouncer was very nasty, and was openly drinking which i don't believe is allowed? Idk but 0/5 stars
google avatar

Meri L.

Yelp
Hand grenade!! Not sure what was in this drink but it was delish and it's alcohol....so you can't really go wrong! Drink was delish and great to walk around bourbon street just drinking away. Service was very friendly. If you get the grenade it's $1 less if you get a refill. Pretty good deal! Go get your grenade!! Delish!
google avatar

Yelp
The Tropical Isle is nestled in the French Quarter on Bourbon street. There are about 5 locations on/ around Bourbon street. We stopped at the Tropical Isle Bourbon for one thing and one thing only the Hand Grenade. This drink is known for being one of New Orleans' most powerful drinks. I just got a couple sips because we shared the drink but I did like the taste. I'm not sure what's inside because it's a secret but it is more stronger than a hurricane. The drink comes in a collector grenade cup and is a good size portion. Tropical Isle 721 Bourbon St New Orleans, LA 70116 (Review 648 overall, 193 in 2021)
google avatar

Anthony D.

Yelp
When in Rome... Tropical Isle is home of the hand grenade drink, a piña colada daquiri in an easily recognizable tall container that you will see plenty of passerbys sporting as you are traversing the iconic Bourbon St. While the drink isn't much to write home about, it's a fun activity to partake in and get the full experience of New Orleans! It's hard to say how strong the drink was, but it's palatable and easy to finish it without realizing.
google avatar

Dani F.

Yelp
As many times as I've been to the spot, I cannot believe I've never written a review! This spot, specifically hand grenades, is one of the staples of the French quarter - if you enjoy strong fruity drinks. They usually have live music going on or if not, at least the jukebox playing some music. It is a great place to people watch as there is a constant rotation of people in and out. There isnt much more to say because if you know, you know! And if you dont, pop in to see what it is all about!
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
There is no other way to describe this place other than extremely fun. The decor inside is bright AF and sets the vibe. More importantly, their drinks are also super fun. Obviously, you have to try the hand grenade, which is tart, strong, and served in the quintessential hand grenade neon green plastic drinking vessel for which they are so well known. We tried almost all of their other "house" drinks: tropical itch, bushwhacker, obviously the shark attack which I also highly recommend because the spectacle of it is fantastic. The bartender was also amazing and gave us samples of everything before we placed an order to ensure we actually liked it. Everything about this place is amazing.
google avatar

Kiana M.

Yelp
$11 for a frozen sweet hand grenade. I honestly bought one cause everyone else had it too. It was decent. Not too strong. Tasted like a spiked frozen lemonade. It's definitely something to try ONCE in a lifetime.. Wouldn't go back tho, would definitely like to try something else! Located on Bourbon street.
google avatar

Jordan B.

Yelp
Now you can't go to Bourbon Street and NOT get a Hand Grenade aka "New Orleans Most Powerful Drink" from Tropical Isle. They come either on the rocks or frozen, and they're both pretty tasty. The mixture of vodka, rum, gin and melon liquor make for a strong ass drink, and the pineapple juice gives it a sweetness that makes the effects creep up on you. A dangerous combination if you're in NOLA for a good time and not a long time like my friends and I this summer. *has flashbacks of the antics on Bourbon Street* At $10 each the price point isn't too bad, and they were checking vaccination cards at the door to make sure everyone was as safe as possible. All in all, Tropical Isle will be on my list of places to come back to when I revisit NOLA.
google avatar

Karen R.

Yelp
World famous Tropical Isle drinks. Plenty of bars on bourbon street. Plenty of room to sit and enjoy the scenery.
google avatar

Diana M.

Yelp
Came here for a grenade, stayed here for Bryan Ory & the Deacons. The band accepts song requests and Venmo.
