The reviews mentioning the 'VIP party' scams are all true. I just went through a very negative experience this past Saturday. I went to a friend's VIP party here, and entered a 'draw' to wing a similar night. This most likely isn't a draw - they call every single person that signs that list to offer them a 'free' party. I was offered this 'free party' and then received a lot of e-mails prompting me to confirm my attendance. The e-mail promised the following perks:
'Complimentary admission for guys til 11pm, Ladies free all night
· Email Invite to forward to your guests
· Drink tickets for yourself as the host
· Late Night Bottle Specials and reserved section, complimentary bottle for 20+ppl (gratuity not included)'
When I entered the club that night, I was informed I would have to pay $40 as gratuity for the bottle. The e-mails I received did not specify this amount, and I was mislead and lied to. The surprise charge was sprung on me and with my guests having arrived, and I was forced into to an embarrassing social situation, with no choice but to pay, as I could not ask my guests to return home. When I told Erica, one of the 'VIP party hosts' that the charge was not specified to me beforehand, she told me it was in the e-mail. But if you look at the e-mail I quoted above, there is no indication of a $40 charge anywhere - simple a statement saying 'gratuity not included'. Gratuity is something that is paid at the discretion of the customer, and a specific amount should never be forced.
If the New York Parties e-mail had been transparent about this $40 charge, I would have never agreed to arranging this party and this whole situation could have been avoided.
To make matters worse, I never received the personal drink vouchers, despite asking the rude staff twice.
I called Matt, one of the New York Party representatives, to rectify this situation and ask for a refund, and he simply passed the phone on to Erica. I then explained the situation to her and how the e-mail never specified there would be a $40 charge for the vodka bottle, and she kept repeating to me that she would re-forward the e-mail to me specifying the charge. I however never received such an email specifying this amount, so it would be impossible for her to re-forward such an e-mail.
Unfortunately, she refused to acknowledge this wrong-doing and blamed me for accepting the charge at the club, and then she hung up the phone on me. If you had invited your friends to a party that you were told was free in writing, you would not simply leave and tell your friends to go home - it is a situation expressly designed to force someone into, quite frankly, paying a scam, surprise charge.
I would advise strongly against accepting any of their offers, and the club in itself is very average with a questionable crowd. It's overly crowded and someone jumped over the sofa in my designated VIP area and dropped a drink on my dress.
Save yourself the hassle and don't go here.
