True Texas BBQ

The food was fine. The issue is with the customer service. We used a coupon for the transaction but were still charged a higher amount because the discount didn’t apply. As well, since we got the big plate with 3 meat options, sides were included. The sides we wanted weren’t delivered and we had to go back to the counter to ask 3 different times for those missing items. Having worked in the food industry, orders need to be checked to make sure they have every item the customer wants before being expedited. They clearly didn’t check. The customer should never have to go back 3 times because of several missing items (especially during not so busy times).

We heard about this place on Facebook thread and had to check it out. As we entered the place, the smell of bbq hit us. You can order through a kiosk or in person. The guy behind the counter was very helpful and kind. We order the combo meal. Very good along with a craft beer!

Went with low expectations bec of the spotty reviews and was pleasantly surprised. They were out of several items later in the day, but the brisket was fatty and delicious, collard greens were tangy and yum, and while jalapeño cornbread was a tad dry and could’ve used a smidge more butter, it was good. Beans were also decent. The only disappointment was the bbq sauces which were prepackaged - they weren’t awful, but certainly not fresh. Atmosphere was good for a quick service dining hall and live music performer was good, albeit could’ve turned it down a notch as the hall was quite empty, later in the evening and she reverberated quite a bit in the echo-y hall. The only thing that ruined the entire experience was the rude bartender. My husband purchased a single beer that was on special and tipped him $3 (ie well over 30%). I just drank water with my meal and as we went to leave, remembered I had meds to take in the car and asked if my husband could just fill my cup with some ice tea to take away the taste of the medication. This was a TINY (maybe 4oz?), clear water cup and as my husband returned to the bar to grab a small straw, the bartender LOUDLY proclaimed, “That’s a water cup, but I’ll let it slide this time!” Now, I don’t know how often patrons steal probably 10 cents worth of a drink, but please… pick your battles when attempting to chastise or embarrass your customers! Should I have gone back, waited in the (at the time) 6-10 person line and bought a full sized soft drink that I didn’t need, or lived without one - probably… But looking at the amount of waste that diners generate for restaurants in terms of food, disposable silverware, condiments, etc - do they get chastised??? And for a tip we gave both the counter service attendant (who was very polite and attentive) AND the one the bartender personally got, it was just a very unpleasant end to an otherwise good meal. While not completely unwarranted, a little goodwill on the part of the establishment should always be present and now should we ever consider a return visit, we’ll no doubt be deterred by the memory of this experience.

I recently tried the weekly feature deli beef rib at True Texas BBQ with the spicy BBQ sauce, and it was insanely delicious! The rib was tender, flavorful, and perfectly complemented by the tangy and spicy sauce. Definitely a must-try for any BBQ lover!

First visit was alright on a weeknight. The second one during Saturday dinner time, I was surprised at how good the service and food were. I’m glad I brought company and we were all very satisfied! Derin at the cash register was a pleasure helping us patiently. Both times were a good clean experience, but Saturday was tasty. We ordered a three-meat plate, and everything was truly tasty ! Also both sides . Mac and cheese was great , and the greens were excellent. They also had music, very appropriate ambience , and very convenient having it inside the store. P

I went to do my grocery shopping, but once I caught a whiff of the brisket, I just could not resist the temptation. Excellent decision! Unlike eating places under the same roofs of lots of other grocery stores, this one is tucked up front and off to the side, giving it the feeling that you are at a real barbecue place. Based on the taste of the food, it is! It was fun to be able to get a pint of beer on tap (loved the hazy IPA), and the stacked brisket enchilada — really looks more like lasagna — was out of this world delicious! Layers of briskets interspersed with tortillas and cheese made me wish this were a permanent addition to the menu. The choice of sides is lengthy and offers actual options, not just run if the mill beans, Cole slaw, and potato salad. You can get those if you want, but the brisket beans are fabulous. We opted to get blackberry cobbler to top it all off, and served warm, it was the perfect ending to a very satisfying spontaneous meal. I will be back every time I shop. Hmmm. I think we might be running out of milk…

This review is WAY overdue. Our daughter was getting married on New Years Eve on a ranch out past Dripping Springs and we were taking care of the rehearsal dinner. My wife was calling around and trying to find a good caterer. She ending up getting in touch with Lisa Leyva from the HEB True Texas BBQ and that turned out to be a Godsend. Lisa was super kind and communicated with my wife for months - taking a lot of the burden off of my wife to make this rehearsal dinner with 35+ guests extra special. When the big day came, Lisa drove out to the venue with another employee to drop off the BBQ and ended up surprising us by setting it all up before they left. Brisket, sausage, beans, Mac & cheese, and banana pudding with all of the trimmings. (I’m kind of a Banana Pudding freak so unfortunately the only picture I took to share is of the Banana Pudding.) The guests couldn’t believe the BBQ was from HEB (we were like “duh.”) It was amazing and the prices were beyond reasonable, especially compared to the other BBQ caterers in the area. If you are having an event and want True Texas BBQ, look no further than the Town Lake HEB. Make sure you ask for Lisa Leyva. My wife truly felt like she made a new friend.

Fairly amazing BBQ 👏 from HEB. Very fresh and tasty. We really enjoyed the collard greens. The ribs were fresh and juicy, and the burnt ends were also delicious. Nothing was bad or even mediocre - except the plastic cutlery... I broke 2 forks trying to eat my dinner... otherwise, it was a solid 4☆ performance, and we look forward to going back! Sorry we missed the Beef ribs that were only available after 5PM on Fri/Sat//Sun. The Texas Torpedoes were overpriced at $7.50 each, but they were still yummy - not as good as a true ABT's, however.

The taste of the bbq wasn't what I was looking for. The guy who took my order was very polite he went over the menu recommending plates. I will not be eating at this franchise again The first I thought it was a fluke by not tasting. Second time was confirmed it isn't good.

Solid BBQ. We tried the creamed corn, mac n' cheese, baked potato with everything, banana pudding, and the limited-time brisket cheesesteak. They were all quite good for grocery store BBQ. The bread on the sandwich was out of this world fresh. The best white toast ever! It was easy to place our order at the counter and the employees were very friendly.

I know this isn't exactly a 'local' restaurant, but felt the need to leave a review since the food is absolutely amazing! Definitely beat my expectations by a long shot. The brisket was moist and smokey, as were the burnt ends, with a crisp and flavorful exterior. The collard greens were the perfect level of salty and meaty flavored, and the coleslaw was crisp and refreshing. Definitely worth a try next time you're at the Lake Austin H-E-B.

Worst bbq I've ever had in my life...I am completely dumbfounded by such a let down. I thought because this was an HEB brand this would be great or at least decent but man was I wrong! For starters the place itself is nice and new, plenty of seating. Prices are cheap for bbq but maybe that's where I should have realized this would be subpar to all other bbq spots. I got a 1 meat plate with chopped and sauced brisket, Mac and cheese and brisket beans. All the food came in container cups. The brisket was the fattiest meat I've ever had. Every bite was fat and barely meat. The bbq sauce was not good. The Mac and cheese was overcooked pasta with what I think was cheese? Wasn't cheesy, wasn't good, very plain. The brisket beans were probably the only thing I liked. My friend ordered a baked potato but it wasn't hot enough so the butter that was added was just a cold chunk of butter that sat there room temperature never melting! The actual brisket cuts looked ok but the bbq sauce that comes in a prepackaged container isn't good. Definitely regret thinking this place would be good. I thought HEB could do no wrong but here we are.

I didn't really have expectations, nor did I think I'd be checking out a BBQ fast food restaurant inside of HEB. How dare I doubt or think so little of HEB. That's right, folks, HEB does it again. Do yourselves a favor and order La Jefa. Oftentimes, in TX, we're compelled to order the brisket. The turkey and sausage combo sandwich (La Jefa) was undeniably appetizing. The textures and flavors matched well, and the added coleslaw was a pleasant surprise. Next time, I hope to try the creamed corn. The Mac and cheese seems to be the same as the side of Mac and cheese you'd get in store. It's alright. Note: El Jefe is the Brisket combo sandwich. Service is wonderful, as all people are in HEB. And the portion sizes...well..."Here Everything is Bigger".

Okay so like here's the deal.. I went to this HEB yesterday for HAAM. No not the kind of ham that you put between two slices of bread with cheese. The kind that benefits Austin musicians. The store held a 13-hour musical showcase with as many bands doing 45 minute gigs with 15 minute gear swaps. I was only there for seven and a half hours of it. But you might imagine at some point that I got thirsty. And hungry. That's where True Texas BBQ came in. They had a special going for lunch called Enchilada Brisket. It came with two sides for $11.99. (Now don't go off on them or me when you go there and the special ended yesterday. It did.) Of course now, you tell this boy he can have two sides, and he doesn't particularly notice that it comes with sides of beans and rice. So I ordered what I wanted to off the sides menu. And they gave to me. Same price. I got the serrano cornbread and the potato salad. Now that may sound weird for enchilada brisket. But I would get those two sides within the other brisket so why not here? There's where I went a bit wrong. I should have stuck with beans and rice. The serrano cornbread was certainly generous in size, but it was also generous in calories. And be quite honest I didn't taste any serrano and the bread was kind of dry. Similar experience with the potato salad. It wasn't like the potato salad you'd find inside the HEB store. Potatoes were hard, and I didn't quite cotton to the taste of the salad itself. I'm going to shock this up to my making mistakes in pairing the sides for this dish. But let's talk about that entree. So it says that it's an enchilada but it presents far more like lasagna. Now hold on a second. No there is no pasta here. It's what you'd expect for enchiladas. But it stacks and looks like lasagna. And the flavor is incredible. Now I guess I could downrate them for the sides but that was one time mistake that I'll live and learn over. And the entree more than made up for that miscalculation. Now here's the real gem of this place. There's a bar in this restaurant and it's not the bar BQ. They don't have a lot of taps and they don't have a lot of selections on the liquor but what they have is some hard working bartenders. And good drink specials on Tuesdays. Like $2 off draft beers. Like a Pint House Electric Jellyfish for five bucks. And that jellyfish was fresh. And tasty. And I've had it at the Pint House on Ben White where it was brand spanking new. And I've also had it at Sam's Town Point where it was skunky. I guess they don't sell a lot of $9 beers at a dive bar where Bud Light specials abound. But I digress. So here's my recommendation: stay close to to the true barbecue selections here, come on a Tuesday, and enjoy their selection of beers on tap. They may be small but they are mighty. Yeehaw. Recommended. P.S. Don't tell the girlfriend I drank beer.

Favor delivered fast and hot. Huge amount of meat and I got three meals out of it. Burnt ends were amazing and filling. Pulled pork was awesome and I've been most unimpressed by others because I grew up on Delta BBQ. The turkey was tasty and sliced for sandwich bread which came with the plate. The peach cobbler was yummy and extra sweet just like I like it. Wish I'd ordered two more desserts to go with those two extra meals.

I have to say I'm a bbq snob. I live in Houston, but we're in Austin visiting family and they mentioned BBQ inside an H‑E‑B. I love H‑E‑B, we go there several times a week, but ours doesn't have any "extras" ( well, If you don't count sushi, but I think that's rented space) - just good meat &fish, fresh produce, friendly people and occasionally, a cooking sample person. Granted, expectations for BBQ in Austin are very high. Franklin, mickelthwaite, terry blacks. Now H‑E‑B. Curiosity overcame skepticism - you can't make decisions on only three Yelp reviews - and we went for lunch today. It's a very clean bar/restaurant type area. Strangely, you can't see the prep area that's typical in BBQ places, everything is closed off and the only person you see is the cashier. There's a menu overhead, self serve soft drinks and tea, and a full bar for adult beverages. Polished concrete floor, standard four top tables and booths. Very welcoming and comfortable. There are monitors everywhere and this, no baseball games were in, and they were showing HGTV and other random channels. Out the window, you overlook the produce department and the self checkout lanes. Finally for the food. The girls ordered sliced beef sandwiches - they prefer chopped beef, but cashier said it's pre-chopped and soaked in sauce, and crockpot chopped beef is a definite no. I had brisket, ribs, and sausage. Sausage was H‑E‑B black pepper, just heated and sliced. Nothing special. The moist brisket had very nice bark, but was somehow a little bland and dry, slightly better than your local Rudys, but definitely not Terry blacks. The ribs had a great flavor, not fall off the bone, but a nice "bite" - I prefer a little more "doness", these were pulled at about 197 degrees, 5 or 6 degrees more, they would have been 5/5. Sides and bread were hill country brands, nothing special there. Sauces also hill country brand, not terrible, but not excellent either. Would I go back? Yes. If I needed groceries and a quick lunch, I'd grab a rib or two. But I wouldn't make a special trip. It's pretty good for what it is, actually, if you compare to other In-store food at grocery stores, it's quite good. 3 stars out of 5.

It's delicious. I wanna try their margaritas but I am scared. The service is super great. I've never eaten there. I always get it to go.

A BBQ spot within one of the best HEBs? Yep this place truly has it all. Nothing works up an appetite than shopping for groceries and fortunately True Texas BBQ is right there for hunger needs. Atmosphere: Located right at the HEBs entrance, but still maintaining a cleaner BBQ quick service place, complete with a big BAR sign in Texas lights. Food: BBQ and all kinds too, I ended up going with a simple Brisket sandwich with one of their signature BBQ sauces. Exactly as I wanted a tasty meaty sandwich with great flavor and freshly made. Service: Friendly countertop service, I didn't much chance to chat but service seemed polite and helping everyone they could. If along your way you happen to get hungry while shopping at this HEB, this is a solid place to try if you crave BBQ.

Sauce now in small plastic containers and it's terrible! It used to be good when it was a self serve pump.

We had a fantastic BBQ at an affordable price here. I highly recommend trying it out.

friday night. hungry. want brisket. no brisket. other things are good.... but if you're gonna have a bbq joint in texas, you can't run out of brisket! :(

We made it into H-E-B on its second day open! First in line for BBQ at 11 am and were told right before going in we had to take our baby out of the shopping cart. Took us a second to get our things together but it was okay. Ordering was a breeze, we got some free banana pudding when we signed up for their texts. They don't have a kids menu, in our little group we had a 13 month old and a 14 month old, there was no way they could eat an entire adult meal. We ended up just letting them eat from our food. This was unfortunate because at places like Blacks BBQ we are able to order a couple of slices of brisket for them and call it a day. The chopped brisket sandwich was about the size of a kids menu burger from Mcd's. Meat was phenomenally good but the portion was not making sense for the price. I personally ordered the brisket baked potato- it was perfect! Nice big potato with all the fixings. Really good. We were the first people in but still could only snag one of the high chairs. They only have two for the entire restaurant. This isn't great for the amount of small children we saw coming in.

Great service, delicious barbeque. Date night was a success. Definitely will be coming back again.

Love this place! The brisket sandwiches are excellent. I'm always amazed you can get such perfect, tender barbecue right at the grocery store. This is a great place to meet up for lunch, dinner, or happy hour. (Yes, they have a happy hour too!) What a great barbecue spot overlooking Lake Austin Blvd.
