‘Top Chef’ Alum Opens Austin Restaurant in New H-E-B Food Hall - Eater Austin

"This is H-E-B’s branded barbecue restaurant’s second location in Austin. On deck are the usual barbecue staples: smoked meats (brisket, ribs, turkey), sides (mac and cheese, potato salad), and barbecue sandwiches. The first Austin-area True Texas restaurant opened at 8801 South Congress Avenue just north of Slaughter Lane. There’s a third slated for the Lake Austin area at 715 South Exposition Boulevard." - Nadia Chaudhury

This place is great. With 5 different “restaurants”, everyone in your group can find the perfect satisfying meal, and still sit together at the bar. You can find something to fill every dietary need, as well. For example, my uncle needed a meal that was low in sodium, another guest wanted smoked turkey plate, and I wanted a cobb salad. What a nice experience.

I haven’t eaten at this one yet, but if it is like the ones that I’ve been to from other locations, like the one over in Hancock center, it should be reasonably good. Unfortunately, this is not a very big restaurant unlike the Hancock location, which is essentially a full-size barbecue restaurant. This one is just a walk up window With some shared seating for the food court.

My wife and I had a great time here this weekend! Bartenders were great while waiting on the food. Good beer and relaxed atmosphere. We forgot for a bit that we were in a grocery store. I had the burnt ends and sausage links; delish! Good folks and good food; would recommend.

Google
Delicious BBQ for a good price. Their sides are also very tasty and rival some of the best BBQ joints in town. You can’t go wrong with the Mac and charro beans . Great beer selection and friendly service. I love this neighborhood spot.

Ordered a 2 meat plate and all they gave me was 2 small pieces of brisket then argued with me about it! Will definitely never eat here again ever!

I have heard of HEB BBQ for a long time but never tried before. Stopped by the Mueller HEB and got a 1 meat plate, moist brisket, coleslaw and potato salad. Got a side of cornbread and cobbler. Usually we prefer the bbq from Lockhart but this was as good (or better) and closer. We will definitely be back!

Google
I ordered brisket for a senion citizens potluck yesterday. Several of our group praised the quality and taste of the fatty brisket. The brisket was, "senior citizen friendly". The manager who assisted me was very helpful and very courteous. Our group eagerly looks forward to our next brisket night.

I visited this location and the slaughter location on May 28th. I had very different experiences. Earlier in the day at slaughter I was served by a man that was not very friendly and many items that should have come with my meal did not. But because of this experience I was not going back to slaughter when I realized I needed a little more bbq. So I looked up other locations. I did have a little difficulty finding it but luckily I did. Alex greeted as I almost walked past 🤣. He was courteous and explained the ordering process. As I waited for my order a gentleman came up and was having trouble ordering so I helped him. Seeing Alex did not scream my name he made eye contact and asked nicely and quietly if I was".....?" So i could continue helping without making the other customer feel bad. While helping him , I decided I wanted food for myself so ordered. Unfortunately than ran out of what I ordered. Which happens. Alex and his team were amazing, very commutative and courteous. I will absolutely be back!

Yelp
Sliced Turkey Breast Sandwich, it was surprisingly good! Good smoked flavor and cannot complain about the portion size. Great quick meal for a decent price. I would order it again hoping on consistency in quality and quantity. The service was great, very quick and courteous. The atmosphere was takeout style but they do have the option to dine in a nearby seating area.

Yelp
Red River location recently opened; it has to improve. The first time purchased sandwiches-the buns were hard. 2nd time purchased chicken-bloody and hard meat. Will Third time be the charm, I don't know if I want to chance bad food.

Yelp
This is essentially a tiny storefront inside the Mueller HEB alongside several restaurant concepts forming a miniature food court. There's an ordering counter with a couple tablets that only take credit cards which is terribly confusing and I suppose is meant to be a remote ordering system to minimize contact with employees. They say you can order online and at the other restaurant fronts on either side as well, and there seemed to be a system for paying cash at the bar in the next room, but there's certainly a learning curve if you haven't done this before. Once you do order successfully however there isn't too much delay picking it up and the food was actually quite good and more affordable than I'd expect. I got myself the chopped brisket sandwich that comes on a toasted bun and you can add BBQ sauce and pickles and onions in the app, all for $6.19. The meat was really excellent, tender and not fatty just like I like it, with a great flavor. It's not a huge portion but a decent size and there are plenty of options to super size it for $4 or choose one of the fancier $10ish sandwiches. I also got myself the blueberry cobbler since I'm a sucker for blueberries and limited time offerings, and that was quite nice too. It was more like pieces of pancake in blueberry pie filling, but it was hot and delicious and a good mix, all for about $3.29, I think. I might try some of their sides or more luxurious sandwiches next time if I'm not on a budget, but this worked well for a meal. I do recommend you only take your food to go, however. The food court only has seating in the bar next door, which is a cramped nightmare. There are about a dozen tables and maybe half the number of stools you need, so you'll likely be forced to stand up at some of the tall tables. Furthermore, this was crowded and chaotic on a Tuesday evening when it shouldn't have been, and I can only imagine how wild it is at peak times. There is some covered outdoor seating too, but this is a bad idea in summer for obvious reasons. So yes, this is a great place for walk-up to-go BBQ and I would enjoy trying it again. I hope to visit another HEB with a roomier version than Mueller and I believe one further south even has a drive-through, but this will do in a pinch.

Yelp
The food is amazing. Like Astonishingly amazing. It came fast, cheap, and the whole family enjoyed. Even a picky member of my family loved it here. 5 stars

Yelp
They made 4 mistakes manger told me he will credit me which I was totally ok with. I went for a simple extra lean brisket sandwich when I got home there was no bun on top. Which made it its 5th mistakes. Tho the manger Amber was kind enough to give me a gift card .

Yelp
I truly love True Texas BBQ! The prices are always affordable and they don't ever disappoint! I was in the area and stumbled across this location. Inside the HEB they have many different eateries to choose from. It's not like the other locations. I was craving the brisket sandwich and the baked potato with butter and cheese. Everything was fresh and hot! Super delicious and always lives up the hype!

Yelp
I am gluten and dairy-intolerant. I was hesitant to eat here because their menu lists their brisket low gluten. I talked to their staff and she was beyond helpful explaining to me that the brisket may come in contain with gluten but it is not made directly with gluten. We also discussed my dairy issues to include the BBQ sauces. She told me the sauces are gluten-free but she was not sure about dairy. However, she said that the BBQ sauces if they had dairy products they would need to be in the fridge which they were not. I took a GI distress chance to eat here and I am glad I did. The brisket was solid. You could add pickles, onion, BBQ sauces, and slices of white bread to your order. My husband and I split a 1/2 pound of the fatty brisket. It was well worth the $10 we spent. Be sure to eat in the Main Street H-E-B area so you can grab a drink and people watch.

Yelp
Honestly one of my favorite BBQ places in Austin. The service is fast and the meats are excellent. Want a different kind of sauce? They have a whole grocery store right there. This is a best kept secret. The pitmasters were trained by pros and their work shows. Skip the lines and head here.

Yelp
Hard to believe this was in a grocery store. Meat was incredible and the sauces were as well

Yelp
Its nice having a BBQ joint only a few steps away when your at work...the ordering system is a breeze....and I was glad to see we can order Q by the plate...I went with 3 meats....Fatty Brisket, Sausage and Ribs....there is an upcharge for the ribs....They were a bit on the tough side of things, great flavor and smoke ring. Brisket was great, along with the sausage...Love the spicy BBQ sauce (They have a sweet as well)....Sides were Mac and Cheese and Brisket Beans....both of them killer good.

Yelp
Food is good but I've ordered 3 times from them for delivery and every single time something is missing from my order. Will not try it again

Yelp
We have enjoyed this BBQ place since the first day it opened! We are not a fan of the ordering kiosk, and at times we have not been impressed with the service- but we do like the BBQ. It stands up well to other offerings in the area.

Yelp
I never expected grocery store brisket to be so good but was I wrong. TTB brisket is the best I've tried. That's how I judge a BBQ joint. I am a native Texan and am not amused with "frilly" sauces or styles of BBQ from Kansas, the Carolinas or some touristy hot spots where the food isn't suitable for a lick. The TTB rub is black pepper heavy and the crust is thick. The smoke ring is deep and even the "lean" cuts are tender and delicious. Good brisket doesn't need sauce but I use Rudy's sauce when I want it. The chicken and side orders are ok but much prefer County Line potato salad, coleslaw and beans. I was raised on Kiolbassa brand sausage and the homemade Polish wedding sausage served at church picnics all over south texas therefore I do not care for TTB sausage either. My only complaint is you can't order online ahead for pickup and they don't open until 11am.

Yelp
This place has decent bbq. I ordered the chopped brisket sandwich and it was good. Only issue was it had very less sauce and pickles. Order though came fast and people working are good too.

Yelp
Food was not good at all do not recommend. Chips and queso were too salty brisket sandwich was too dry specially the bread.

Yelp
The turkey sandwich is excellent. A large has about 5 thick slices of tender meat, bbq sauce, pickles and onions on a round bun and it is delicious. Heavenly. I'm from Los Angeles and bbq restaurants don't do turkey this way here. Try it with mac 'n cheese or creamed corn.

Yelp
I'm so sad to be writing this... the food is always delicious but tonight I ordered the 3 meat platter and got all of it brisket, this is a $20 meal, and I get home only to see 5 little wimpy pieces of meat :( so disappointed, HEB usually does way better than this.

Yelp
Came here (inside H‑E‑B) because my other bbq place had too long of a line and it was decent! I liked the brisket (I wish they had pork) and the bread that comes with it is a nice touch. The brisket beans were yummy but the coleslaw wasn't great. I will definitely come back for the meat because it was good and it's conveniently in H-E-B.

Yelp
This is my second time to try true Texas BBQ location inside and HEB. I had the smoked turkey and the brisket beans. Both were excellent. Joseph gave me a generous portion of the slices of turkey. I like the barbecue sauce it's thick and has a little heat to it.

Yelp
Super impressed with HEBs BBQ! Tried the brisket sandwich for the first time today and it was awesome! Sauce was great too, really peppery (similar to Rudy's). And the bread was legit...no boring white bread slices. I live in the hood and can't believe I waited this long to try it!
