The Best Restaurants and Bars Near San Diego State University (SDSU) | Eater San Diego

"Señor Pancho’s is frequented for its drive-thru but Trujillo’s is probably the preferred taco shop close to campus. Open late most nights and until the wee hours on weekends, its extensive menu includes items named for fraternities and sororities, like the Alpha special and the Sigma Chi crunch wrap." - Candice Woo

Google
Your classic SD style tacos and burritos. The portions are huge! Burrito was the size of my arm and taco is definitely equivalent to at least two normal tacos. The flavors were there, but can’t say the asada in the burrito or carnitas in the taco was the freshest or best I’ve had. The pico and salsa make up for some of that though. Was hungry after a night of drinking, so everything hit that night and definitely had leftovers for the next day.

I visited this place a few times back when i lived here. Had to come back on my vacay to get their version of my favorite Taco Bell item the Crunchwrap Supreme. The Sigma Chi Crunchwrap is so good!

Google
This what authentic Mexican food should really taste like. My recommendation. Try their everything you will not be disappointed. Their staff is helpful and kind. I have had their food uncountable times. Their sauces have a unique taste which spices up any dish to perfection and when that portion touches the tastebuds it is so delicious.

I parked my car in the parking area which is free Trujillo's taco shop always open. God thank you almighty for always having trujillo's taco shop near my living home stay. A man needs to sell even clothes to get his early morning breakfast, lunch and dinner right. I and my friend used to eat here always. Special atmosphere at Trujillo is worked out carefully. They sell burritos only. He doesnot have any other branches in san diego. Got the burrito so, i opened it and saw whats inside. I ordered again with chicken. Yes was the answer. I enjoyed the burrito. I feel the tortillas are cooked and rolled with green peppers, rice, black beans, chicken. Its customers satisfaction.

Google
Amazing food and cheap! The tacos are great and the portions are super generous, the staff was also really kind to us. I always go to eat-in and it can be busy if there are events in the area but in a normal day, the place is also really nice. The nachos and veggie tacos are my favourite

Google
This is a local spot and very popular for SDSU students. Good selection of taqueria food. Portion sizes are reasonable, but food quality is more on the bland side. Fast, friendly service.

Google
California burrito is 10/10. Rubio’s was my favorite but this is superior. 10$ for over a lb of food I guess. It is a mom and pop place in the real sense of the word. Loved it!! Added the taco carne asada during my last visit. See pictures. Definitely well worth your time and money!!

Google
Wonderful! A college area hit and for great reason! Huge portions, great taste, and it feels like a staple of the community. Certainly lunch and dinner or even late night fare but they also serve breakfast. I will always come back here when I'm in town!

Yelp
On a weekend trip to San Diego, I walked around San Diego State University's campus on a Saturday. It was spring break so not a lot of students were there. After my stroll, I was ready for lunch and stumbled upon Trujillo's Taco Shop right next to campus. Service (3/5): Service isn't a big part of the experience because you order at the counter and they call your name when your food is ready. It's served on a tray, so after you're done, put anything leftover in the trash and stack your tray on top of the trash bin. Done. Ambiance (2.5/5): Trujillo's is a no-frills Mexican restaurant. You're not going there for the ambiance. You're going there for the food. And the affordable prices. There's a good amount of seating and one TV. The bathrooms aren't the cleanest but again, it's the type of spot you're at for one reason only. Drinks (4/5): While they have beer, I went with a soft drink. They have some specials that come with a soft drink included so that's what I went with. Food (4/5): Now this is what we've been waiting for. Trujillo's has a large menu of burritos, tacos, quesadillas, enchiladas, and other popular Mexican fare. They also have 16 or so specials named after various fraternities and sororities on campus. A lot of them were interesting. I went with the one that is a burrito with carne asada, guacamole, salsa, and French fries, wrapped in a quesadilla with a soft drink. It's a large burrito! The tortilla is homemade which is always important. The meat was flavorful and the guac was fresh. French fries in burritos is a California thing so I'm not complaining. It added some nice crunch to the burrito. And I was stuffed after eating it all. When I go to California, I always complain about the prices of everything e.g. gas, food, drinks, events, museums, etc. One way to get around that is on a college campus. Pro tip.

Yelp
Extremely overpriced. Burritos have nothing in them and it's like 2.50 per item to add. Lady was extremely rude and didn't seem like she wanted to be there at all. I will never come to this place again.

Yelp
This place is actually pretty good and open late! I've been trying to venture out of my comfort zone by going to different taco shops. Not going to lie I was a bit skeptical on it being any good since it's near SDSU and I figured it'd be Americanized down or like not that great because they're feeding hungry students anyway. Boy was I wrong! Maybe I was just hungry but it was delicious and surpassed my expectations! My husband got the wolfpack burrito which I didn't try but he said was good. I ordered a carne asada quesadilla for my son which came with guacamole inside. I got the carne asada fries. I thought they were pretty good, not salty or bland. The hot sauce is fire!!! Meaning tasted great and also had that heat that most hot sauces don't. The only thing I didn't like was the pushy cashier who kept asking what we wanted to order when I kept saying we're not ready yet. You would assume I'd walk up to the counter if I were ready right? They have such an extensive menu of different burrito combos so it was hard to decide because it all sounded so good and there were different variations of stuff inside. There was another lady who barely spoke English but she was helping and being trained by the cashier but she was nice. I will definitely be back to try the burritos!

Yelp
I love that it's family owned and operated. I love that it's in a convenient area. I love that it's reasonably priced. I love that it's open late. The food. Meh. I guess it's as best as it'll get given the location. I ordered the surf n turf burrito. La salsa rojo was solid. La salsa verde which I'm not usually a fan of was better than I expected. The best part of the burrito was towards the end. I think all the juices flowed down by that part. Ordering was pretty simple. I was one of 4 people inside. Got my order in about 10 minutes. Also ordered a horchata. Inside felt like a college / dive bar. Probably made that way to attract the students in the area. Because I live in the area I'll come back and try another plate. That'll give me a better idea of how good this is. I hope the other items are better. All in all... I don't think it's a bad spot. I just think it might be overhyped / the reviews were inflated a bit.

Yelp
This was our first spot after getting into town, amazing food! Wife had the quesadilla, daughter had two tacos and I had the sigma chai crunchwrap... Food was fresh and delicious, salsas were perfect and service was amazing. I may come back before we leave town in 4 days LOL.

Yelp
Been a long time since I've been here. The California Burritos are a must try. Chill place to hang out and eat. The people are cool. I miss their food
google avatar

Louis S.

Yelp
The food was good, I would not say great. There's very little, what I guess you would call, ambiance. It's a small mom and pop taco on the edge of San Diego State U. The beef in the tacos is shredded. That's different from what I'm used to. But everything was fresh and tasty. Service was relatively fast. Good for a quick lunch. Louis S

Yelp
Food is delicious, very close to authentic TJ tacos and you get a lot of food for the price. My husband and I will will def be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Loooooooove their burritos, tacos, rolled tacos!!! The green and red sauce chef kiss! The owner was awesome last time and let me buy a dozen tortillas off of him to bring back to the east coast to enjoy a proper quesadilla and burritos.
google avatar

Yelp
Came in at 11pm. Ordered pretty quick. Pike burrito was one of the best of my life! Great portion and so tasty! Nice ambience. Definitely recommend this spot!

Yelp
If you're in the college area and looking for amazing taco shop Trujillo's is my personal favorite!!! Probably in all of San Diego !!!! They have an adventurous menu full of Delicious Creations!! The service is always great!! And the hot sauces are good and spicy!!! 10 out of 10!!!

Yelp
I still have dreams about the Trujillo's burrito. The size of a baby, filled with super flavorful carne asada, the perfect ratios of other fillings, and no bland rice to take up space and dilute the flavor of the stuff that really matters. I made it a point to try all the carne asada I could from different places in San Diego, and Trujillo's easily stands out as the best. You know the food is gonna be good when the bathrooms are way in the back of the restaurant in an area that isn't even lit and look like something out of a horror movie. The workers are super nice, especially if you take a minute to chat with them. They get a lot of international students being close to SDSU, and they've taken the time to learn greetings and basic conversation in Arabic - talk about going above and beyond! Get the red (spicy) salsa. Completely outperforms the others!
google avatar

Megan H.

Yelp
The food was pretty good. I loved the green sauce. Taking a star off because the French fries in my burrito weren't the best and it feels overpriced.
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
So fire! I was visiting SD on a work trip and my husband and sister-in-law recommended this place. It really lived up to the hype. I got the California burrito, and the flavors were unbelievably good. The service was prompt and the food came out in a reasonable time. I've heard the Crunchwrap is another menu item you've got to try. Would definitely come back if I'm in the area again!

Yelp
Exactly what you'd expect for a late night taqueria on/right next to a college campus! It was the perfect thing to go to after a concert. I got the sigma chi crunch wrap (they have a menu of items named after sororities/fraternities). It was pretty big but nothing special. I felt like there wasn't much of a crunch, we got very limited salsas and unfortunately they didn't offer water cups. It is right off of campus so parking is very limited and during busy hours the wait can be long. There are tables inside to dine in at but it can be hectic!
google avatar

Divya K.

Yelp
We came here late night after attending a concert at Viejas Arena. This was the only place located in walkable distance around that time - you could tell by the line formed outside the entrance at 1 AM. It's one of the first food places I've seen where they need a security guard to moderate the line. After we snaked through the line and finally placed our order, we got a receipt with a number which allowed us to keep track of when our food would be ready. There isn't an official call out, but you just have to keep checking at the counter with your number. You get a couple super spicy red salsas with every order and pay extra for more. From getting in the door to walking out with our order, the overall process took about 30 minutes. Upon seeing how busy it was I assumed I shouldn't expect much from the food, but the tacos were actually pretty good. Be sure to tip the staff, they work really hard to keep things moving!

Yelp
Great hole in the wall Mexican food with amazing quality. Fresh carne asada and great salsa to just the right kick.
google avatar

Rey L.

Yelp
Place is hella overpriced for regular hole in the wall Mexican food. Get this type of food better in LA and cheaper. Single Adobada small soft shell taco $7, tried to order the burrito and they want to charge extra for rice & bean?‍‍Are we in Cali? Lastly my son got sick in the car ride back home from what he orders - epic fail and disappointed - won't come back or recommend.
google avatar

Carmen R.

Yelp
Sorry but their food is not the greatest. Obviously these college students don't know better and find their food fulfilling but just take your business elsewhere. Sorry not sorry.
google avatar

Bernadette T.

Yelp
Much love for Trujillos! It is the quintessential college taco shop! Such a prime spot right next door to SDSU's campus. Late night dinner can get busy with lots of people, but during the day, it should be not a long of a wait. I always get the sigma chi crunchwrap! Love the crunchy tostada & fries in it. It's a perfect meal, so filling and delicious :)

Gavin A.

Yelp
Great tasting food. Really fresh ingredients especially the guacamole and vegetables. Good salsas.

Quinn N.

Yelp
1 star - will not come back. My partner was in the lot for a bit deciding on whether he wanted to get food from there and when he was about to leave one of the staff ran out and told him the tow truck was coming because he was in the spot too long even though he's been a regular for over a decade. He tried to tell her he buys food from them all the time but she chased him down as he drove away. If this is how they treat their loyal customers we won't be customers anymore

Deserea B.

Yelp
I've been going to Trujillos since I was an undergraduate at SDSU. Their burritos have always been delicious, my favorite being the sigma pi with carne asada paired with the red orange colored salsa. They make their own salsas, and I could probably easily polish off a bottle of the red orange colored one if they sold it. My husband and I love their burritos so much that we ate them the day of our wedding! Unfortunately, over the years, the interior of the restaurant appears to have become somewhat run down. I've noticed that it appears that business has somewhat slowed from what I knew it to be in the past. If they were able to revamp the interior space, I think it'd attract more people back in to enjoy the deliciousness that is their food. Their staff are so nice and approachable as well!
google avatar

Katrina R.

Yelp
Best place ever, sigma pi crunch wrap until I die. Staff are friendly. Must get the red and green sauce.
google avatar

Sarah Y.

Yelp
Location: next to the AMPM gas station, across the street from SDSU Parking: Very limited Carne Asada fries ($12) Main Takeaway: The man at the front counter had immaculate vibes and definitely set the jovial mood. The fries were fresh, the carne Asada portion was fair, and there was a generous amount of sour cream and cheese. Overall, the carne asada fries weren't particularly memorable and the price was a little high given the portion size, but it makes for a good meal option if you're near SDSU.
google avatar

Scott R.

Yelp
Literally the best taco shop in southern Cali. Let's start with the guac. It's off the hook good. I used to go here all the time in college. Go Aztecs. I went back for the first time in years and they remembered me! The most friendly service, especially considering they are ALWAYS BUSY. Their carne is a must try in whatever form you like. I'm a California Burrito snob, and this one blows every other place out of the water. Their hot sauce. Oh their hot sauce. More kick than most taco shops, and a ton more flavor. I recommend asking for your burrito to be double wrapped. You won't be disappointed. There is always a great energy there, especially before a basketball game. AND THEY HAVE BEER!!! It's a taco shop, after all, so don't expect a white linen experience. But everyone is so nice and the food can't be beat.
google avatar

Micki B.

Yelp
I usually get a carne asada burrito and quesadilla. Very delicious and the salsa is fantastic.
google avatar

Abubu A.

Yelp
Still amazing. Hole in wall but great food at a very great price. Recommended chicken fajita burrito and the carne asada tacos, just keep in mind the taco orders are just 1 big taco, not 3 small ones
google avatar

Conner S.

Yelp
Trujillo's is an SDSU institution! Open super late on the weekends and is a great place to grab a bite to eat. We went to a concert on campus so it was the perfect place to go afterwards. They offer classic mexican food but also have some unique items - we ordered the Sigma Chi Crunchwrap. This can definitely hit the spot after a few beers, but I wouldn't say it was anything special. The wait can be decently long during late night hours and the crowd can be a little rowdy, but still a very solid option for food around campus!
google avatar

Scott H.

Yelp
When I lived in PB this was my go to drive through Mexican food for chicken enchiladas. Mmm
google avatar

Jovelle M.

Yelp
Trujillo's is right next to SDSU which is where I am currently attending. This place is such a good spot for a late night burrito. I always come with my friends late at night whether coming back from a party or not. The (I'm assuming couple) that runs the place is always super quick and efficient. I applaud them for being able to be so patient with handling so many college students who are almost always drunk and loud whenever I come. I personally always get the sigma pi burrito with the green sauce. The sigma pi is your standard burrito that has meat, melted cheese, sour cream, guac, fries and some other stuff I can't remember. Honestly, the burrito itself is so flavorful, I don't usually add the sauce. On top of that, it comes with a small drink all for about $14. It's honestly such a good deal, and I love this place so much.
google avatar

Angie F.

Yelp
Me and my husband were looking for a family restaurant to eat with our kids and if could give zero stars I would. Cashier was rude , she didn't even know what ingredients were inside the items on the menu and seemed bothered when I asked. And can you believe their carne asada is just a big rolled taco! It doesn't have beans or rice I mean what kind of Mexican restaurant is this?

Blaise D.

Yelp
Rude lady. She failed to put forks in the bag for my friends' order of carne asada fries, and when I went up on their behalf to ask for forks she gave me single fork refused to give me any more for my friends, insisting that she put forks in the bag. After insisting multiple times that she didn't put any forks in the bag, and asking repeatedly she still wouldn't give me any additional forks, so I had to go back and get my friends to go up and ask for forks individually. The fact she was so stubborn over a small flimsy little plastic fork baffles me. Pathetic service.
google avatar

Faith F.

Yelp
The food amazing and the owner I believe is so nice and caring super chill hispanic guy. I've been going to sdsu all 4 years and let me say food 10/10. Service quick for how busy it is which is often. They're great people serving great food. The inside is a chill college like taco shop close to campus.
google avatar

Emily G.

Yelp
Low quality service. We lost the physical receipt and had proof of purchase with our bank statement, yet they still disregarded this and we never received our food as they denied it to us. I certainly filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. 0/10
google avatar

Brad B.

Yelp
There is no shortage of taco shops in San Diego so I do appreciate it when certain shops do something a little different to separate themselves from the rest of the crowd. Trujillo's is one of those shops. The only thing I get here is the Sigma Nu. What is it? Let me tell you! This "burrito" is not your everyday burrito but rather an occasional treat. It's the kind of burrito that you take a friend from out of town to enjoy because it's something that isn't typical, yet still delicious. Think of it this way... Take your typical components of a good ol' California burrito, french fries and all, add a fried rolled taco, then instead of a boring tortilla wrap it all up in a full sized quesadilla. Oh boy, it's a lot, but I do enjoy it on a very limited basis. As to be expected, a burrito that is this specialized will run more than $10.00 but you're not eating it everyday. And hey, that damn Starbucks in your hand costs you $5.00 each morning anyway! Justify treating yourself.

Barb S.

Yelp
Super good burrito spot. The carne asada was my favorite. Good service, nice place by SDSU.

Jasmine A.

Yelp
Where do I start? We placed our food order and waited over 25 minutes for our food. The place was insanely packed with college students and hardly any space for non-college people such as myself and family. To make things worse, our order was wrong. We requested no sour cream and it was loaded on my enchiladas as well and salsa on my crispy tacos when I specifically requested for none of those items. If possible, I would recommend looking for any other Mexican restaurant other than this one.

Emily O.

Yelp
Love love love love La mujer que toma mis orden cada tiempo es muy simpáctica y amigable. Ella ha memorizado mi orden favorita tambíen. The staff speak both Spanish and english, and I like to order in English just to give them some practice! Some food doesn't slap but some absolutely hit 10/10
google avatar

Jocelyn M.

Yelp
I try to love this place but maybe its because i am from San Diego and have had better mexican food in the SouthBay. I get why college students love this place, its easy access and pretty affordable and the inside has a nostalgic feel. If I wasn't from San Diego, I would probably love this place. I have been here two times and every time I come here I come at night time. I order the crunch-wrap and every-time I get it, it's kind of dry. Maybe during the day its alot different since they probably make everything fresh in during the day but I don't know if this is the best mexican food on El Cajon Blvd.
google avatar

Tiffany S.

Yelp
My husband insisted that we check out all his old haunts at SDSU and Trujillo's was one of them! We split the Sigma pi burrito (Cheese quesadilla with choice of carne asada or pollo asado, guac, sour cream, fries, and salsa all wrapped in a burrito) which is basically a quesorito and the carne asada fries. I felt like we BARELY made a dent in the food even with two starving adults. Nuts! The space was really empty in the middle of the day and the tables were still kinda grimy/sticky from the night scene, BUT I loved every bit of the experience. The restroom is dirty clean (yes there's such thing haha) so I would personally advise to avoid using it if you can!
google avatar

Richard M.

Yelp
Great carne asada. Great carnitas - more like chunks than I'm accustomed too. My regular place shreds it. Both are excellent; just different. Chips + Guac = Good. Prices are good; selection seems good - lots of specials we did not try but would like to. Bathroom is miserable; I wouldn't eat anything that falls on the table.

Jim F.

Yelp
I can't believe these reviews. Obviously family generated. Probably starving students eating their first taco. This was easily the worst Mexican food I've ever had---ironically just a short drive FROM Mexico! I mean, the "rolled tacos" I call taquitos were inedible. The styrofoam box it came in had more flavor. Carnitas tacos...almost as awful. Flavorless ingredients in an environment that was 2-notches below "dive." Hey...I love Dives, but only if the FOOD tastes good. Oh, and did I mention the 4 of us waited 45 to GET this...stuff? I can't believe a place like this can survive, but maybe the "clientele" would eat a bar of soap and enjoy it.
google avatar

Aleksei S.

Yelp
Unfortunately, this place offers bad customer service and false advertisement in their website. I called to place an order, the lady told me that it was going to be ready in 10 min. I wanted to drive over to pick up my on-time but when I got here the same lady told me that the order wasn't ready, that they start cooking when people arrive to pick up the food. I was very disappointed because I was hungry and my food wasn't ready. Then she told me that the reason is because they want to reassure that the food will be picked up. That is horrible because instead they should say that over the phone and not promise that the food will be ready in 10 minutes. Bad bad bad customer service, treatment and policy. I wish I could leave a ZERO STAR!

Arlene D.

Yelp
overpriced and unseasoned tacos. how do you make carne asada taste bland? 2 stars for decent beans. the rice sucks
google avatar

Stella R.

Yelp
The food was alright. A bone in my chicken taco... maybe that means they use fresh chicken. The place is super dirty and the women's restroom reeked bad. It literally looks like nothing has been cleaned in a long time, I can only imagine what the back of the house looks like. I guess they think it's ok because their primary customer is a college kid?
google avatar

Shari G.

Yelp
Let's start off with I use to come here almost daily when I went to SDSU 10 years ago so I have every right to critique harshly. I was craving the brown salsa they make so I decided to stop by and grab a carne asada burrito. I wanted some carrots and the man at the register told me it was 2$ extra. Whatever 2$ I guess I'll pay since I really want them. Anyways the food was prepared quickly. He asked if I wanted salsa so I asked for the brown and the green. Bro gave me ONE OF EACH! I looked at him like can I have more and he told me he can give me ONE MORE! Mind you these salsas are in tiny containers. When I use to come they used the bigger ones and did not have a LIMIT ON THE AMOUNT! I completely understand inflation and what not but I'm already paying 12$ for a burrito like just give me the salsa. After eating, it wasn't worth the 14$ I paid for everything. The salsa is still great but that's it. I probably will not end up coming back here, unless I'm just getting the salsa ‍

Yelp
My daughter showed me the way to this taco shop . I've been a fan of this place for well over 10 years . My favorite burrito is the Nak (Asada with beans, cheese , fries, pico & guacamole ) . I like calling in my order it's quick plus easy too . Day or night you'll find people here picking up some delicious taco or burritos . The customer service is always pleasant as well as helpful. Typically I don't eat guacamole from taco shops but I definitely like this one and believe it's homemade not that scary pre fab bright green color .
