Best Restaurants Along I-95 in the Carolinas | Eater Carolinas

"As many of the online reviews state, David Truluck’s Fish and BBQ isn’t much to look at, but it serves some of the best fried seafood, deviled crabs, and Southern sides close to Timmonsville stretch of I-26. Pick a protein and then try to decide between liver hash, fried okra, butter beans, yams, collard greens, and more." - Matt Lardie

I found this lil gem on Google I had a taste for seafood so I gave it a try. The food was fresh, hot🔥 and good. I had flounder, shrimps, yams, mac&cheese and a side order of clams. The service was also good, whenever your in the area give it a try.

Google
The atmosphere leaves something to be desired but the food and hospitality makes up for it. We arrived just as they were closing for the evening but we were allowed to order and sit in the dining room as they cleaned up. They seemed to have a great to-go business even as they were closing.

Google
Love the macaroni and cheese. I wish the fish was a little bigger. Overall clean. Side portions are nice amount.

Google
Our overall experience was good. The food was prepared fast and served hot. Their fish was well seasoned. The sides were okay. The staff was very friendly and helpful with placing our order. The atmosphere was very nostalgic and welcoming. We look forward to visiting again.

Google

Google
Cheated my mother out of her 2 large cat fish dinner fill her plate up with mostly hush puppies refused to fix the issue at hand talking about next time we got you on your order instead of making it right they wanted us to come back and spend some more money 🤷🏽💀🤣 do not go here for food

Google
Love the simplicity and delicious food here! My family lives in town and I always make it a point to stop in at least once every visit. Great seafood, which I tend to always go for clam strips every time! Dont expect any fancy dining here, just great southern food served on paper plates! Love Trulucks!

Google
My family and I enjoy eating at this place. When we come to visit family, this is a normal routine to grab something from Trulucks. The food is always delicious! However, if you go there on a Saturday, be prepared for a wait. They also have dine in or take out options.

Yelp
This is my go to spot when I don't feel like cooking fish. I'm new to the area, but visited this spot several times before relocating. I wasn't feeling well after coming back home from the holidays. This place is like a down home type of atmosphere, nothing fancy. The young lady that normally picks your fish out is always friendly. Excellent service I have never had any issues. My husband purchased a dinner lord the collard's were salty. He didn't complain, but my salt tolerance isn't good. If you're in the area try them out.

Yelp
My son and I stopped here driving from Florida to Maryland. We picked it based on the reviews, and it did NOT disappoint! We both had fried red snapper and he had a side of green beans and yams. The meal came with hush puppies which had just the right amount of sweetness and tasted kind of like Jamaican carnival. We closed out the meal with pound cake which was also delicious! There was a small snafu with our order but the ladies were so kind in addressing it. I would most certainly go back again when I'm in the area. I was so excited about the food, I forgot to take a picture!

Yelp
This once was my fav seafood restaurant when I came home on weekends. For the past few months I started noticing the quality of food slowly decrease. This past weekend however was the most disappointing. The friend okra was okay. I never finished eating however because of the remaining order. There were only two oysters in my plate of which I inquired and was told they were at the bottom of the lightly greasy plate with the breaded shrimp that was falling apart. the scallops were less than a dime size.consisting of not more than three. the clams were hard, the fish was not larger than the palm of my hand, the stuff crab was well overcooked and the baked potato was well undercooked. What's going on. My spouse has already checked out from buying meals and found somewhere else. I would like for the quality to return.

Yelp
Best sweet tea ever. Such a great variety of fishes and sides to go with your combos amazing seasoning and everything from there catfish to shrimp but what was even better was the environment the folks there their recommendations *also they had fresh seafood there that you could purchase for take out the portions were huge had all the Fixins you need it and some scrumptious hush puppies. I personally could not finish my whole plate of fried zucchini shrimp fried catfish. Oh boy do I wish I had it now another place that I could eat at daily.

Yelp
Best food anywhere. Super busy so you know it's good. My favorite BBQ pork anywhere. Hush puppies are amazing

Yelp
Stopped in while saying in Florence for the week. After seeing all the great reviews I had to try it. I got the flounder (3 piece) dinner. A little too greasy for my liking but the fish had great flavor. So many sides to choose from but I decided on the black eyed peas and rice and yams. The yams were not my grandmothers as they seemed to be from a can and mushy. The best part about my stop was the strawberry trifle they had! Super yummy and not too sweet.

Yelp
Last Saturday, time first time I tried two pieces of flounders with shrimps and fries, with cole slaw and some hushpuppies, is soo good! So hot and crispy! I love to come back to Timmonsville and get my fish from David Truluck again cuz is really good and they have BBQ as well! They open up every Wednesday thru Saturday at 8-8:30, that's 12 hours and 30 minutes open

Yelp
Good prices and fresh food. I had the fried fish and shrimp dinner plate. It comes with 2 sides and hush puppies. My husband had their bbq plate, he liked it very much, great portions. My dinner was fresh and delicious, I loved the collard greens! They had a hint of sweetness that I hadn't taste anywhere else. The bbq sauce wasn't my personal favorite but it was not bad just a little too vinegary for my taste. Is not a fancy place but locals eat there and in my opinion those are always the best places. Service was fast and friendly.

J C.

Yelp
Very Disappointing I have eaten here many times before but the service and quality of food has definitely gone down. I ordered the seafood platter and it was missing several items clam strips, flounder and devil crab were missing ( and I ordered manily because of claim strips and devil crab). I ordered an additional piece of fish and it had scales on it. The hush puppies were so greasy you could not eat them and the lima beans were unedible!!!

Yelp
I hate to just eat "safe" or the large chains ---- so Local Fare is my choice. Leaving a work appt in Sumter SC, and craving seafood! WHAT A FIND! --- couldn't be fresher, and the fish (catfish fillet) almost has to step aside for the BBQ sandwich! Yummy x 2

Yelp
Great food and staff. Easy and home atmosphere. Food is fresh. Also serve home cooked meals. If there is mix up the order they will correct it.

Yelp
Very unassuming place and simple interior. But food was much better than expected, not heavily battered not too much sodium. We had the mixed seafood platter and seafood was fresh n nicely dried, not heavy with grease., recommended pit stop for a quick n tasty meal.

Yelp
So unbelievably delicious. This is a real local spot in a small town. The staff is welcoming and friendly and super busy. Have an idea what you want, because there is a line behind you. You order at the counter and pay, then they call the number on your receipt. The catfish is super yum yum. The pork BBQ is decent and worth having as long as you also get the catfish. Probably the other seafood is excellent as they have it on ice right there like a mini fish market. We did not have cake, but I have a feeling that is great too. The collards were excellent and have a really unique and secret spice in them that I could not put my finger on. I loved this place. You can tell when food is addicting because you want to have it again before you are even done with your meal.

Yelp
This is a Mom and Pop establishment were ALL of the locals eat! The fish is fried to perfection and the veggies are yummy If you are in the area it is worth venturing off of I-95 to eat here. We will definitely return

Yelp
We are on a road trip to NC. We didn't want the usual run of the mill stops. I looked up on Trip Advisor and Yelp for a restaurant to eat, but this area is pretty rural and, though the restaurants were listed, no reviews were found. It's about 4 miles off the interstate, but definitely worth the small detour. I had the catfish and my boyfriend had the BBQ sandwich. We both left very satisfied. Our meals were delicious, the place was spacious and clean, and the order was relatively fast. Would definitely come back again on our way through SC.
google avatar

Paul F.

Yelp
Awesome food. Staff is friendly and helpful. Atmosphere is pleasant and welcoming. Quality was good. Store was clean and in good shape. The shrimp snack is great. Worth the drive.

Yelp
Definitely a Mom and Pop, local hangout. Nothing classy about this place so be prepared for that. Some shady looking customers for sure, but it seems everyone knows everyone else. Lots of "I seen yo' mama up here the other day" and "tell yo' grandpappy I missed him at church".... down home country folk! The staff are all very friendly, even when they were slammed for lunch. Order up front and you get a number they will shout out when your food is ready. It takes a few minutes to get your order but it comes out HOT and a helluva lot. They don't take Amex, a small complaint. Small seating areas, but most folks don't linger. The hush puppies are really good, as are the clam strips. The fried scallops are a little greasy for my liking (I actually assumed they'd come out grilled... ha! City girl here... Worth the drive off the interstate. Skip fast food and give this joint your business.

Yelp
Went to the best seafood restaurant today. Parking lot was full so I knew it either had great food or topless waitresses. Lol. The best food since my grandmother passed. I recommend this mom and pop spot to everyone. Wide variety and good prices. Try it.

Yelp
The seafood is bomb but I've never had their bbq. The only thing that would make it better is if they ditched the styrofoam plates and boxes because they can sometimes melt and the food sweats.

Yelp
Truelucks is my Favorite Restaurant to visit when I'm in the Pee Dee area of South Carolina. Hartsville is my home town. But driving to Timmonsville is worth it if you are going to Truelucks. I actually live in Columbia SC and have made trips there with family and or friends. The seafood is simply DELICIOUS. I enjoy eating the catfish, it is Scrumptious. I highly recommend this place as a must visit. The staff is very nice and helpful. The menu has a large variety. Great restaurant.

Yelp
Good food, good people, and affordable. I would highly recommend this place if your in the area. Great for s groups and kids.

Yelp
Come here with my family once a month. I'm never disappointed! I love the catfish and Mac n cheese! I tend to try new sides when I go.

Bryan S.

Yelp
Country restaurant serving up great fried seafood. Tricky hours. Suggested that you go for lunch. You may want to call ahead and make sure they are open before you drive over to T'ville. The food is great. Price is average. Volume is as expected. Country setting. Very casual. Busy place. Noise level okay but a lot of foot traffic. To go seems very popular here. Great find in a tiny town.
google avatar

Faye D.

Yelp
The food is good but the place has no ventilation at all. You always come out smelling like "fried" whatever.
google avatar

Lynn G.

Yelp
This place is busy! Staff is super nice. The people coming in and out are amazingly sweet- South Carolina at its finest. David Truluck is worth the drive from anywhere- and we drove down from Charlotte to see what all the fuss is about. I have never had anyone make fried chicken gizzards the way they do at that place I love in my hometown neighborhood off Broad in Louisville KY. This place does them right, soaked in Hot sauce. The fried oysters are delicious- so far best place we've ever had them before now was in Charleston. Folly Beach is the place to go for fried shrimp- my only gripe is that David Truluck doesn't serve those huge ones, fresh and mouth watering. But their mediums are good, so now harm, no foul. Either way, there is a reason this place has people almost wrapped around the building coming in. It's worth every bit of the wait, the sweat in the heat, and the drive down. We will be back- soon, and often.

Yelp
This place has great fish. It's the epitome of a mom and pops restaurant. Everyone I've taking here has enjoyed the food and the customer service.
google avatar

Pinaki S.

Yelp
Get off the Interstate and you get this gem. Fried fish as good you'll get anywhere, with fantastic sides, hushpuppies and some vinegar-based BBQ. Great, diverse crowd. Real South Carolina here.
google avatar

Karen W.

Yelp
My family went to Trulucks for seafood. Since I'm not a seafood eater I got the barbecue. I am very picky about my barbecue and was highly impressed with their's. The Black eyed peas were also very delicious. I can't speak for the seafood but my family seem to enjoy it.

Marcel B.

Yelp
It was a great find great food and price!!!had bbg butter beans cabbage and hush puppies yum! Great looking desserts no room

Yelp
this place is one of those well kept secrets. well the only reason to do that is it is a little small. and i don't want to have to wait when i get to go. but hey bigger place will take care of that. so if you have not been... well what are you waiting on? looks will throw some of yall off, but if you don't want to eat in anything but a 4star place... well more great food for all the rest of us real people! and yall are helping with the space problem i was talking about too. but if you want some really great seafood...then get yourself over to the big city of timmonsville! i may see you there on a saturday. enjoy!

Yelp
Great shrimp, great green(string) beans, great hush puppies. Really great food. I highly recommend Trulucks!

Yelp
Truluck's Seafood Restaurant. & Market serves the best seafood around the greater Florence area. The owner David Truluck has been in the seafood business for years. He has connections to procure the best, freshest seafood available. ( I talked with him about it.) They definitely know how to cook it also ! Fried or broiled; your choice. ( They listen and cook it just the way YOU want it.) The restaurant can seat 90 people. It has become so popular that on Friday and Saturday evenings you had better arrive early or you may have to wait. Truluck's Seafood Restaurant & Market just celebrated their 5th year in business. If you want some really good seafood , forget Florence ! Take a short ride over to Timmonsville and see what really good seafood taste like ! Truluck's Seafood Restaurant & Market is easy to find. Travel hwy. 76 west into Timmonsville from Florence. When you get to the first stop light , look on the right. There is Truluck's ! I have loved seafood all my life and I will compare Truluck's against anyone's. Try them out. I guarantee you won't be disappointed ! The restaurant is very clean and has a large new dining room. A friend of mine introduced me to Truluck's and I'm glad he did. There's no place in Florence that can compare to the quality of their seafood or their service ! Oh yeah. I almost forgot ! They also have championship class Bar B Q. I haven't tried it yet but is also "Top of the line" I'm sure ! I know David Truluck has won cook offs with his recipe. Albert Florence, SC

Yelp
This place is always busy but they get you in and out pretty efficiently. The fish is fresh and hot. Worth the drive and wait for sure...
