This is primarily a review of the "Trump Café" on the bottom level of Trump Tower. They have pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, etc.
On my most recent trip (I'd been there a few times before over the years), I stopped in with a friend who was visiting New York and wanted to do some tourist things. I expected security, now that Trump has been elected, to be a lot more of a hassle than it turned out to be... They do bag checks and such, but it was hardly a delay at all and the security people were cordial. To get to the Trump Cafe, you walk past the now famous (to some, infamous) gold elevators and take the escalator down a floor. The level is set up in a foodcourt-ish style.
This time, I had a bacon cheeseburger. The burger was decent: the bacon was nice and crispy (as requested), the beef (a Pat LaFrieda blend) isn't bad, and it came with crisp lettuce and fresh tomato. The patty is a little thin for its fluffy roll, though. I'd rate it as good enough but unremarkable. I recall that being my experience with its other fare in the past.
To the extent that service can be good at a place where you order at a counter, wait, and then pick up your food, the service is excellent. They're fairly speedy, polite, and personable, and they'll take opportunities to go beyond what's required. For one of a few examples on just one visit, they noticed that my friend's and my orders came up at the same time and that I was waiting at the table so as to not leave some belongings unattended, so they brought my food to my table so that we could both start eating at the same time.
One's assessment of the environment will depend on one's tastes, and maybe, these days, politics. Trump Tower's aesthetics inspire oddly extreme opinions. Really, though, it's in the vein of a great many big city towers. All of the faux-gold trimmings aren't to my taste, but the pink stone adds some warmth that a lot of stone lobby areas lack. Otherwise, the decor is a bit sparse, except during the holidays when it's pleasantly decorated. Eating at the cafe, you can sit near the base of the waterfall which is a nice touch.
Oh, and prices at the Cafe (unlike the rest of Trump Tower) aren't that bad. You wind up paying about $15 for a foodcourt-style meal, but it's a neighborhood where street vendors hawk $7 pretzels so that can feel like a bargain.
I wouldn't go far out of my way for the architecture or the food, but if you're curious about seeing la casa de Trump, or you happen to be nearby, it's an OK place to grab a bite to eat.
