I gotta give it up to Trung Nguyên Legend Café. They got some gigantic balls for charging some of the prices they do.
Like balls so big they drag across the floor.
Because charging $13.95 for Cà Phê Sữa Đá (Viet Iced Coffee) is wild! And, this is before tax and tip.
Ok but let's not normalize that AZN food and drinks always has to be cheap...
Was it worth it?
More on that later.
Grand opening this weekend in Viet Town is Trung Nguyên Legend Café from Trung Nguyên Group (next to Cơm Tấm Thiên Hương). They're the largest domestic coffee brand in Vietnam. They also have a chain of coffee shops with three brands. Legend is their premium brand.
Their first US cafe location is in OC and this is their second location which makes sense given SJ has the largest Viet population outside of Vietnam. Open for takeout and dine-in. Dog-friendly patio.
Hours of operation: Open everyday from 9 am - 9 pm.
Arrived around 10:20 am on Saturday to a short line of about three groups of people.

There's two cashiers for ordering: one at the main shop and the other at the retail corner. For dine-in, they'll give you a number and a runner will deliver your drinks.

Coffee, tea, and smoothies.
Prices: $4.50 - $13.95.
Some drinks, you can request less sweet.
Bánh mì was also listed on the menu but didn't see anyone ordering it so maybe is not available yet?

* Cà Phê Sữa Đá Ottoman: "Coffee of the Holy Faith" ($13.95) // 3 Stars: https://tinyurl.com/3dyr3vmp
- Available for dine-in only
This was recommended by the cashier so my friend went with it. Maybe it was going to be an ethereal experience or they do a coffee ceremony for the price? Or, unicorns harvest the coffee beans?
Nope, it's just served in rustic copper-ware and plopped on your table.
When transferred to a to-go cup with ice, it was barely half full: https://tinyurl.com/yc4fc4sf
Friend said, it was fine. I took a sip and it was good - strong, smooth, and robust with chicory and chocolate notes (supposedly civet-inspired). I'm not a coffee aficionado/enthusiast but to me, it didn't taste much different than other Viet coffees at half the price. You're just paying extra for the presentation and photo op here.
* Trà Lá Nếp Sen Vàng: Pandan Lotus Seed Tea ($8.25) // 4 Stars: https://tinyurl.com/2s4ch6vd
- Requested less sweet/half sweet
Great presentation with a side of lotus seeds and chestnuts. Good black tea base with a prominent pandan flavor (vanilla-y) with floral notes and nutty crunch from the lotus seeds. Frothy milk foam top for a creamy mouthfeel. At less/half sweet, it was still too sweet tho.
After two tiny sips, I transferred it into a to-go cup because we were leaving to eat and was surprised it only filled the cup halfway with an inch+ of foam.

Kind but slow drink service. They're new so that's understandable.
With three groups ahead of us, it took about 5 minutes to order and 35 minutes for our drinks to be delivered.

If the inflated pricing for the Cà Phê Sữa Đá (dine-in) is for the "experience", maybe staff can give a quick blurb about it or provide a placard to customers to read about it.
It feels like dine-in customers are getting short changed. Speaking for my tea, volume should be close to equivalent for dine-in and to-go.

Customers had their phones out taking pics and videos so aesthetics on point.
There's about 8 tables inside plus booth seating. Over 10 tables outside in the patio.
The retail shop has everything you need to recreate their coffee at home or for gift giving (coffee beans, filter, phin, etc).

Congested on the weekends.
Overall, I can tell the quality and craftsmanship that goes into Trung Nguyên Legend Café's drinks. But, $27.61 for two drinks after tax and tip is hella steep for Viet Town. I know they're going for an elevated concept but I hope they rethink their prices to be competitive...for after the hype dies down.
