Montreal’s New Restaurants, Bars, and Cafés: 2019 Edition | Eater Montreal

"I noted that the Japanese matcha chain Tsujiri has opened on Crescent Street, taking over the former site of Italian restaurant Via Crescent as it expands into Quebec." - Eater Staff

Japanese Matcha Chain Tsujiri Opens on Crescent Street | Eater Montreal

"I visited the new Tsujiri on Crescent Street, which opened December 9 in the former Via Crescent space at 1418 Crescent Street; the menu emphasizes a serious volume of green tea in many formats — regular brewed matcha (and other teas like sencha), matcha lattes (including twists such as black sesame), matcha floats topped with matcha soft serve, shaved ice desserts, cakes, macarons, cream puffs, parfaits, and a literal “cake blended” matcha milkshake. There's also a short savoury selection, notably a tonkotsu ramen served with green-tea noodles. Although the menu feels decidedly modern, Tsujiri has roots back to the mid-19th century and focuses on high-quality Uji-area green tea; it’s not a huge player in Japan but has many locations across East Asia and is modestly expanding in Canada (Toronto-area locations, newer sites in Edmonton and near Vancouver, and franchises planned in Halifax and Calgary). Hours are TBA." - Tim Forster

Google
Absolutely loved this place! Visited the restaurant last week, and oh boy — I must say, they serve the best matcha in town. From the moment I walked in, I was amazed by the variety of matcha-infused desserts on the menu. Their matcha-flavored cakes were heavenly — rich, balanced, and full of authentic matcha goodness. I haven’t tried the matcha tiramisu yet, but it’s definitely on my list for next time. If you’re a matcha lover, this spot is an absolute must-visit!

Google
I visited around 6:00 PM, and by that time there were not many options left to choose from. However, the dessert I got was very tasty and well made. One issue I had was with the takeout. It did not come with any fork or spoon, which made it inconvenient for me to eat back at the hotel. Overall, good dessert, but it would be more helpful if utensils were included with takeout orders.

Google
Very well decorated Japanese place that serves drinks and ice cream, specializing in match flavors. The ice is super good and worth the price. Oh, and you can also order match slushie with ice cream on top. Very spacious so you can sit down with group of friends or family

Peiyin H.

Google
We come to here every time we are in Montreal. I love the black sesame cake very much. We also ordered chestnut mont blanc and matcha latte this time.

Trúc Anh P.

Google
Came here several times, best matcha i’ve found so far in Montreal. Love the drinks and the cakes, cannot give recommendations because all of them are very yummy. I’d prefer to come here at night as sometimes it’s very crowded during the day and it’s hard to find a seat

Hayato S.

Google
This cafe is a famous matcha brand in Japan. I ordered tiramisu and hojicha latte. The sponge of the tiramisu was very dry and hard, so it's not tasty. I didn't really taste the matcha, so I don't recommend it. The hojicha latte had a refreshing hojicha aroma, but it might be better to buy it yourself on Amazon or make it yourself using hojicha powder from another matcha shop. It's a good place to relax when you're feeling a bit tired after walking around downtown.

Goeun C.

Google
This is a specialty matcha café. They use dense brown sugar in the shiratama parfait and kuromitsu matcha glace, which overpowered the overall flavor and made it feel almost medicinal. Their yuzu drink and hojicha ice cream were really good. The café also has plenty of seating, so it’s a nice place to sit down and relax.

Lily Z.

Google
the yuzu matcha was delicious and refreshing!! the tonkatsu soba was rich and full of umami 🥰 lovely service and super cozy interior that’s good for studying/working. def visiting again to try out the desserts 🥹💕

Yelp
Mmmmm yummy !! good neighborhood to visit when you're in the area -- really yummy matcha. I tried the roasted soybean matcha.. I would've preferred less of the soybean powder on top of the ice. I had to mix it in thoroughly to make sure it wasn't a grainy texture. After the initial distaste of matcha & mixing everything, the taste was amazing - nutty , earthy, and a little sweet. Perfect if you want to try something other than the original matcha Lots of seating available & free wifi. Good place to study or meet with friends. There's outdoor seating available too!

Yelp
While this place came highly rated, I found it to be satisfactory only. Surprisingly, the savory dishes were far better than their desserts and drinks. I ordered the poke soba with salmon and was impressed by the simplicity yet flavorful dishes. The salmon was very fresh and the noodles were cooked to perfection. The salad and avocado made a perfect addition. My husband got the ebiten sanuki udon- another perfect noodle dish was a lot savoriness. We ordered an iced hojicha latte, yuzu tea, hojicha soft serve, and the hojicha caramel chiffon cake as our treats. Nothing was memorable about these items. The hojicha latte did not have a strong roasted tea flavor. The soft serve tasted more like sweet milk and the cone was very stale. The chiffon cake also was unpleasant. The only somewhat decent item was the iced yuzu tea. Coming here, I expected the sweets and drinks to be the highlight, but was disappointed by them. However, I would absolutely come here again for their poke soba.

Yelp
This place is amazing for your matcha fix. Their desserts and food options are so good and the location is great (ample seating and clean). I recommend any matcha latte, the ice cream, the matcha cheesecake, and the tiramisu. Fast service and friendly staff.

Yelp
Tsujiri was amazing!! I really wanted to try this place and I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to make it and I made it 15 minutes before closing, but they said that they could still make a Matcha Parfait for me and that I could hang out until the place closed. They made the Parfait so fast and I was so impressed. It was delicious and this place also had really nice and cool vibes - if I ever get the chance to visit Montreal ever again in the future, I'll definitely stop by here again! :)

Yelp
Tsujiri is the perfect place to have lunch before going to the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. And if you're done early you can grab dessert too. First, you order at the front counter and then you pick a table and they'll bring your food to you from the kitchen. The ambiance is that of a casual but cozy cafe. The food is warm and comforting without being heavy. The kitsune soba is served with a warm clear yet flavorful broth and two slices of delicious tofu. My friend enjoyed the dashi chazuke with unagi which comes with a ton of side dishes. With our lunch we got a kuromitsu latte and an oat milk matcha latte respectively. The kuromitsu latte was nice and flavorful but the oat milk matcha was a little too milky and lacked the rich earthiness of a great matcha latte. Despite the disappointing matcha oat milk latte, my friend and I wanted to try the desserts but the lunch and matcha lattes were pretty filling. I'm looking forward to coming back to try the desserts the next chance I get to be in Montreal.

Yelp
The iced matcha americano has the right amount of kick that is refreshing. From different places offering iced matcha latte, Tsujiri is the winner! The matcha flavor dominates without leaving the bitter aftertaste and the milk is at the right amount, offering a creamy taste that complements the matcha perfectly!
google avatar

Celine H.

Yelp
Great matcha tea based resto serving lunch meals (tried the tonkatsu soba) , tasty adzuki matcha and yummy dessert that is not too sweet.
google avatar

Jenny Z.

Yelp
I love matcha. I was excited to have some matcha from Tsujiri! The inside was very cool and modern. I got a latte with soy and brown sugar. I ordered at the counter and they gave me a buzzer so I'd know when my order was ready. It was so good to have a warm tea on a winter day. I was curious to see the food items and desserts they offer here. I would love to come back for lunch!
google avatar

Alayna K.

Yelp
Authentic matcha and cute cafe with good drinks! The matcha latte had the best grassy taste and was not overly sweet. We asked for 25% sweetness for their latte but our drink didn't match. A pretty solid choice! Tables weren't cleaned but service was very nice.
google avatar

Yutin Z.

Yelp
If you love matcha, you will love the matcha ice cream here! The ice cream is nice and creamy and you can taste the matcha and Hojicha flavor! I got the parfait with the jelly on the bottom with matcha and Hojicha swirl. The jelly on the bottom was not my favorite to be honest, but would come back for the ice cream!
google avatar

Yelp
Suchhh good matcha ice cream! I was also pleasantly surprised by their other desserts (roll cake) and food (soba noodles and salmon bowl). I'm actually sad I found this on my last day in Montreal because I would have definitely made multiple visits had I discovered this spot earlier! Very cozy seating, saw many people work on laptops on the upper level. We grabbed a seat at a table and had an outlet right next to us. Super friendly and welcoming service. Would recommend to anyone who loves matcha!

Max S.

Yelp
Excellent, simple, healthy Japanese food and matcha! Great service nice atosmohere, very cozy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

Guowei J.

Yelp
The decoration in the store is great. The glacé is great. The wait time for order and for food is too long.

Yiling Y.

Yelp
Very good on a rainy day, warm and the side dishes add savory and tanginess to the dish.

Yelp
REAL AUTHENTIC MATCHA! I could come here EVERYDAY if I could! They have drinks, snacks, MEALS, and desserts! I could stay here all day and not move! I love their matcha ice cream it was so creamy and you can definitely taste authentic real matcha and it's perfectly sweetened as well! I also got the hojicha ice cream swirled and it was super rich in flavor. Definitely one of my favorite combos! The dango mochi is seasonal and it was so yummy! Perfectly chewy but doesn't stick to your teeth. It was matcha, strawberry and I think peanut flavor? Not sure about the last one. The matcha dafuku was super delicious as well it had a nice creamy mousse texture in the middle and thin mochi on the outside. Overall, everything tastes as as good as it looks! Can't wait to try their whole menu!

Peter S.

Yelp
Wow. This is my first time having soba in my ramen. The Tonkotsu Soba is DELICIOUS. I could drink the broth by itself. The soba noodles were a little too soft, compared to my expectations of soba noodles, but delicious all the same. The atmosphere is casual and seems to be a popular place to chill, work, hang out with friends or meet colleagues. The desserts are delicious. Houjicha Caramel Chiffon Cake and matcha soft serve... super. And of course the staff is inviting and friendly. And oh! Seems a little thing, but the self-service water provided is fresh and tasty too. This matters because sometimes the water at a place tastes funny, which could take away from the flavors of everything else...like a ramen. But definitely not here. Drink the water. Highly recommended for matcha drinks, desserts, ramen... can't imagine anything being less than great here.

Yelp
Very aesthetic little shop tucked away behind some scaffolding my friend and I barely found it. Luckily we looped back around and saw the cafe behind some construction. The cafe is very cute and everything you could think of was made with matcha. The desserts were very green tea forward which was delicious! *Weird Yelp won't let me add my video of the dessert case -__-

Yelp
I think about her (tsujiri) often. The absolute perfect cafe for a cute date, a friend gathering, a work day outside the house, you name it. If i lived in montreal i'd visit until they were sick of me!! The drinks are so good. i got a yuzu drink that actually tasted like yuzu and had the right amount of fizzzzz. the coffee was creamy, not overly sweet, so enjoyable! the soba noodles were refreshing and had the perfect amount of chew. i loved that i was able to try a hot broth with the soba and their summer special cold soba - perfect options when you can't decide what season you're in the mood for. and to top it all off, the dessert!! fresh real matcha for the punch of flavor and great toppings. until next time tsujiri !!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent place enjoyed the frappe with the green tea ice cream (not pictured) but very good

Yelp
I came here after visiting the original Tsujiri years ago (see my review). This chain is similar to the original in Kyoto and they know how to brew matcha as well as the signature parfait. It didn't disappoint on a hot summer day in Montreal. Definitely a must visit in Montreal and have the parfait if nothing else.
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
My favorite matcha spot! Everything I've had here was great- matcha latte, matcha ice cream, desserts, ramen, etc. I would probably come to Montreal just for this place, ha.
google avatar

Matt A.

Yelp
We swung by for a matcha flavoured dessert because this is the place for matcha everything. Matcha cheesecake, matcha rolls, matcha Tiramisu. But what we decide on was matcha soft serve ice cream. Super intense, fresh flavour. Like chewing directly on tea leaves. So if that's what you're about, you'll love this (we did). A cone of that wonderful and luscious ice cream was difficult to finish, to be perfectly honest -They don't skimp on the portions but we enjoyed it until the last bite.
google avatar

Eugene W.

Yelp
This is a nice, clean, well-decorated cafe that seems like a good place to study. The staff were a little rude and didn't acknowledge us until it was pretty awkward. Tsujiri signature parfait is pretty good. I liked the toasted rice puffs and the mochi! The matcha was very good, too.
google avatar

S A.

Yelp
The dashi ochazuke is a perfect meal on a cool day. The flavors are perfect. There is just enough rice and broth to warm and fill you right up. I had the unagi with it, next time I might have an extra side order of unagi. Unagi was exceptionally good. I also had the iced Sakura latte, it might have been seasonal. The drink was absolutely delicious and refreshing. This is the type of place where you can depend on consistency of quality every time.
google avatar

Christal P.

Yelp
Tsujiri is a Japanese cafe that serves matcha, yuzu, and hojicha drinks and soft serve. I ordered the Hojicha Glacé au Lait with mixed matcha and hojicha soft serve. The drink was too sweet for my taste. I couldn't finish it. The soft serve was good and tasted more natural and less sugary than the drink. I'm not sure if there is an option to control the amount of sugar or if all the drinks are made this way. I would only get the soft serve or plain matcha with little to no sugar.
google avatar

Chris Y.

Yelp
I can't believe I didn't know this spot was in Montréal and I'm glad I walked past it while walking back to the hotel. I was craving some Asian dessert spot during my stay there and this nice Japanese dessert spot was just what I needed. I love how Japanese desserts aren't always a sweet as western spots and who doesn't love matcha?! I literally got everything matcha and everything was refreshing to the taste. Glad I found Tsujiri to save me from the humidity.
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
Loved the cold soba noodles here on a hot summer's day! I had the salmon poke which looks like a salad but actually comes with a super generous serving of noodles. The boyfriend had their hiyashi chuka which is available over summer only. Paired with a smooth tsujiri glace au lait (which is their frozen matcha latte) it made for such a nice meal. I want to come back when it's colder for their tonkotsu soba one day!
google avatar

Preyksha R.

Yelp
I got the Tsujiri matcha with regular sugar. I got it cold but you can also get it hot. There are vegan plant based milk alternatives available but you have to let them know when ordering. The service was fast. I got my drink in 5min even though place was packed. They have a seating area with high tables if you want to eat/drink in. They have a limited food menu as well.

Yelp
I can confirm the previous review regarding to the sketchy behavior of the cashier. The store was busy maybe it was a honest mistake but my total was $14.38 and I gave the cashier $15.40. the cashier just gave me the receipt and didn't give me my change. I asked him whatever my dollar I gave you $15.40, I gave him two plastic bill, a $10 and a $5, and 3 coins. He said it's only two cents and they don't have panties I said what about a dollar I gave you $15.40 and he said oh sorry I forgot. Like I said it's a busy day maybe he made an honest mistake but I would just advice all you here to keep an eye on it. That he was great the tea flavor is strong and it's not sweet that's exactly what I like it just that I have to bring exact change next time to avoid any drama.

Kar-Rock T.

Yelp
Tried their matcha soft ice cream. It was expensive but I thought it was worth it. Would have been nice if it was just slightly bigger.

Yelp
Dinner delivery from Restaurant Tsujiri, located on Crescent street in downtown of Montreal, Quebec. On the menu: * Kitsune Soba (Cha Soba noodles, soy sauce and fish flakes broth, deep-fried bean curds - Kitsune) Delicious, al dente Soba noodles, smooth and sweet broth and juicy Kitsune. I've also tried their Tonkotsu Soba (in soy milk tonkototsu base) and the Ebiten Saniki Udon (in light kombu bonito dashi broth). All of the dishes are light, smooth and flavourful. Yelp
I droppped by Tsujiri after work to check out their desserts. I was particularly interested in their matcha cheese cakes, and almost got carried away by how delicious they all looked. In the end, I had to be reasonable and settled for the O-Matcha cake (6.75$) and the Double Cheese (7.00$). The cakes seemed all exquisitely crafted, with quality ingredients and a definite love for all things matcha. For me, the outstanding characteristic was how mild the cakes were. The sweetness was subtle, the creams were light. They definitely fit the standards of Asian "grown-up" desserts, where "not too sweet" is the highest compliment possible. The Double Cheese carried the delicate flavor of tea while having an almost savoury quality to the cheese. The surface layer added texture to the otherwise smooth cake. The O-Matcha cake had dollops of red bean paste sandwiched between the layers, adding a pleasant extra sweetness. The sponge cake remained moist thanks for the plastic protector surrounding the cake slices. A very pleasant experience, elevated by the visually-appealing place and products.

Yelp
I'm not a massive matcha fan so maybe this wasn't for me. Didn't love the deserts and even the tea latte was not special to me. I respect the theme , I like the idea. Need to go back to try the cheesecake though... maybe this will increase my rating.
google avatar

Veronica C.

Yelp
Tsujiri's desserts and drinks are delicious!! I tried their matcha roll cake and it was very creamy and light. Their opera cake and matcha roll cake were sweet but not too overpowering. Perfect for matcha lovers! Matcha Roll Cake ($6.00) & Opera ($7.00)
google avatar

Dawei L.

Yelp
Tasty and authentic matcha! A simplestic and modern place with an easy to read menu that won't make you pull out your calculator to determine how many % sugar and ice you want. You want a cold matcha to fresh up, you got it. O-matcha-Americano, sounds like something filled with sugar that will make you gain 10lbs after two sip? No! It's a straight forward icy cold matcha tea with no garbage. You'll feel like you just deep cleaned your stomach after you finish the cup. Quite curious to come back and test out their desserts aswell. They are well presented and I'm sure it will be a delight!
google avatar

Cowcow Z.

Yelp
Waited in line for ~30 mins and they told us they just decided the kitchen is closed... with no prior notice to let anyone know that they won't serve food. The reason was "the kitchen is backed up." While I get this, it's a hot summer day and the line was out the door. We told them we waited for 30 mins and they just wrote on a piece of paper with sharpie saying kitchen is closed and stuck it at register and that was it. So people waiting in line in the back would not know until they waste their time getting to the front of the line. You should let people know before they decide to line up.
google avatar

Xue L.

Yelp
Delicious matcha desserts. The matcha is very rich and not too bitter. The parfait was creamy and had a lot of ingredients inside. The yuzu shaved ice was a perfect balance between citrus and sweet flavor. We also got some soba and tonkatsu soba. The noodles were special but I wish they were more chewy. I didn't really like the tonkatsu broth because it was sweet and tasted very weird. The place itself is decorated like all the other tsujiris. It's clean and cozy and there are several seats inside. The service was quick and the staff were nice. Would definitely come back for the desserts.
google avatar

Yelp
I am so happy that there is a such wonderful cafe in the city. The warm drinks are served in a beautiful glass cup and the takeouts cakes are wrapped in a beautiful little black box. The Matcha Rare Cheese Cake which is a no-bake cheesecake, is creamy delicious. I love the creaminess and the deep matcha flavor of it. The cafe's decor is nice too. The black walls and the wooden furnitures makes a beautiful place for relaxing. The staff greeted me with a smile and they thanked me for coming. Everything is lovely here!

Yelp
I've been to this franchisee in Toronto. Finally we have it in Montreal. Love this matcha dessert restaurant. Their dessert are all amazing, if you are a matcha lover. I heard there's noodles in summertime, however I have not yet tried. The only downside is their price is a bit high, the match parfait cost about 10$, a very tiny cup of icecream... And the matcha cheesecake is really tasty. Their drinks are great. I'll recommend you to try :)
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
I'm sooo happy that TSUJIRI finally arrived in Montreal! And I'm even happier that this location is a lot more spacious than the one in Toronto (there's a separate dining and dessert area). I decided to try their Tonkotsu Ramen while my partner tried their Kitsune Soba. The ramen broth was interesting as it had a sweet aftertaste, while the soba broth was light and refreshing. Both had matcha noodles, which were great but wished they were a little more chewy. As for their famous desserts, we decided to try their Matcha and Hojicha Parfait, which were so good and worth the hype!! They both had multiple layers of corn flakes, cheesecake, jelly and mochi. Overall, while the noodles were good, their desserts were the highlight of our meal! As for the prices, most items were reasonably priced (9-15$) but some items may be a little pricey. The quality is the same as the popular Toronto location. The only downside is, despite being a bigger location, the wait time to be seated in the dining area can be unreasonable, so just expect there to be a line (we waited about 1 hour to be seated). Regardless, I'd definitely come back and recommend this spot for desserts, hands down!

Yelp

google avatar

Chloe C.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream. The soft serve is thick and creamy and the tea flavours really shine through. Perfect amount of sweetness as well. The parfaits have a great combination of ingredients and the presentation is really nice. Few places have hojicha soft serve and theirs is to die for.

Julie S.

Yelp
Cozy and cute atmosphere with tasty match drink and desserts. Recommend the tarts and parfaits.

Emma T.

Yelp
Had two 10/10 meals here during my brief stay in Montreal. Poke soba was tasty, light, fresh with vegetables in contrast with the heavy dishes typical of quebecois food. Also loved the hojicha slush and shaved ice! I also thought the prices were very reasonable, in fact, low considering the quality of the food.
google avatar

Amy Yu T.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. I came here twice for the hojicha and matcha soft serve. It's just so flavourful, the tea flavour being very well balanced and refreshing. We also tried the matcha ice latte, perfect for the summer. I highly recommend this place and am excited to try the dessert options. Definitely worth the money.
google avatar

Jasmine And Meko S.

Yelp
Tsujiri's sweets were absolutely delicious! We had the Tsujiri parfait, a houjicha latte and a green tea cake with red bean paste filling at the center. We ordered the drinks and desserts at the front of the store then headed to the back of the restaurant to enjoy our order. This seating area was reserved for dining customers from 5pm onwards so we had to leave before then. In terms of food, the items we ordered weren't too sweet which was nice. The matcha ice cream was fragrant and not too bitter and the toppings on the parfait were a delightful addition. Their latte was quite enjoyable as well. The only downside would be the pricing of the items. In total, we spent ~$25 for our order which is quite pricey. Not extremely budget friendly but okay for the occasional splurge! All in all, we would definitely recommend you try it and get a taste of authentic Japanese sweets :)

Yelp
I've heard about Tsujiri, and my struggle to find a parking in downtown was worth it. Love this place. The staff is super nice.

Yelp
From the new matcha spot downtown * Both were super creamy, not the best I've had. Was hoping for a stronger matcha flavour and a crust that is less soggy * Tsujiri or Zenmai? What's your pick?
