"Masato Nishihara is intrigued by the beauty of the incomplete; art that stops just short of perfection. Subtracting one line from a hundred makes the character for ‘tsukumo’ an old-timey word for ‘ninety-nine’, but it also denotes ‘white’, the starting-point akin to a ‘tabula rasa’, as it is one short of one hundred, or completion. Nishihara unravels the culture of Nara, where Japan’s history began. Seeking a deeper understanding of Japanese cuisine, he weaves his menu from local ingredients and his innate ingenuity. Originality flows like tales from the old capital." - Michelin Inspector

First Edition Of MICHELIN Guide Nara 2022 Revealed

"At Tsukumo, chef Masato Nishihara, who trained in Kyoto, New York and London before settling in Nara, offers a most original Japanese cuisine. Bringing together local ingredients and more daring flavours such as truffles, while imagining a culinary dialogue between different Japanese traditions, including shojin ryori (an assortment of vegan dishes classically served in Japanese Buddhist temples), the chef and his team create memorable menus that defy classic Japanese codes." - MICHELIN Guide Japan

Google
Fantastic restaurant. If you are looking for authentic, local and well-cooked meals, this is the place. Everything was awesome, the staff is super kind. A must stop in Nara!

Google
Fantastic food, would recommend trying a few dishes and prices are very reasonable. I had the cold shrimp, radish and lettuce spring rolls were amazing. Then followed by deep fried burdock with a stick glaze and deep fried octopus (was a little chewy, but ok). And for the grand finale, cold, fairly rare Kobe beef with raw onion and carrot. The beef was AMAZING! The waiters and waitresses were very patient and hospitable and they had an English menu with pictures. + a medium Asahi, it all came to just over 2,700¥

Reserved lunch through hotel at Tsukumo. I think it's quite enjoyable and the staff can speak English better than staff in some restaurants in Osaka and Kyoto. For the price tag it's quite worth it. The service is pretty good and the dining environment is not too serious.

An absolute treasure of a restaurant. A more authentic Japanese experience will be hard to find. Art, history, creativity, culture, and incredible tastes. If you’re lucky enough to get a reservation you are in for a treat.
