Yelp
TLDR: This is the place for a great, high-quality kobe beef experience that is well worth the price (~$65 USD per person for us, and should be less than ~$100 USD per person, which is considerably cheaper than some of the other kobe beef restaurants in Osaka, even if you go "ham" on the meat).
So we had already tried wagyu beef for the first time in Kyoto, but when we got to Osaka, which is closer to Kobe (where kobe beef, a specialized strain of wagyu beef, comes from), we realized that we might as well try some of the best meat in the world again before leaving Japan! We found Tsurugyu through Yelp and decided to come here for our last dinner on our Japan trip!
I tried multiple times via phone to make a reservation with this place, since many wagyu and kobe beef restaurants in Osaka get booked up, but either their phone or my phone (in an international context) wasn't working well. Hence, we decided to show up right when they open for dinner at 5:00pm and got seated immediately. Coming early turned out to be a good idea since all of their booths in the back of the restaurant were reserved!
The two of us were seated at the counter (seats 6 people in total), which turned out to be a fun experience because we got to see them prepare the meat, which they take out of a glass meat display. They also had a charcoal grill for us to use to cook the meat, which was a new, fun, and very hot (be careful when grilling!) experience for us.
We ordered the ~$20 USD Geta Salt Kalbi (Rib) plate, the ~$35 USD Specially Selected Hanesita (Kobe Tajima Beef), and the ~$30 USD Special First Class Sirloin. The Geta Salt Kalbi was pretty good, but the Hanesita and Sirloin shined the brightest. The Hanesita and Sirloin portion sizes were well worth the price and had incredible marbling. They gave us ponzu sauce, special homemade Toromi soy sauce, and Himalayan rock salt to dip the meat in, and CAN I JUST SAY THAT KOBE BEEF WITH A TINY TOUCH OF ROCK SALT IS ONE OF THE BEST TASTE EXPERIENCES A HUMAN BEING COULD EVER HAD. The rock salt pairs so well with the meat as the crystallized saltiness mixes with the tender savoriness of the meat while it melts in your mouth.
We also ordered some veggies because they are healthy and grilling vegetables is fun, and I ordered some rice because it's always nice to eat rice with delicious meat.
They gave us hot tea and a cold veggie juice at the end to finish off the meal. The service was friendly, respectful, and helpful with recommending which sauces to pair with the different cuts of meat.
Ultimately, this is a meal that I never want to forget. Tsurugyu offers amazing food, excellent service, and deserves to be the winner on another Buzzfeed's Worth It episode of wagyu/kobe beef.
