Tubby’s - Review - Kingston - Hudson Valley - The Infatuation

"Your friend who enjoys kaleidoscopic slop-rock bands from Detroit already knows about Tubby’s, a fun little bar in Kingston with live music every night. The place is by no means as pretentious as your friend, though. Tubby’s channels a lovable neighborhood degenerate hang, and yet it’s not so sh*tty that you’d be tempting fate by ordering a cocktail. Come for happy hour to drink something cheap in the backyard, then stay for whatever the nightly show might be. Tubby’s also hosts rotating food pop-ups, and if you’re at all interested in swallowing solids, take the trust fall and order something. The last time we came by, we ate dal and potato momos that we miss with frequency. Our exact note at the time of eating: “daal plus Negronis and we’re soaring.” photo credit: Hannah Albertine" - Hannah Albertine

This is an excellent place to see a band or performer. It’s an intimate space, and sound dude Kyle makes every act sound great. They book great music; even if you’ve never heard of whoever’s playing, it’s worth your while to drop in and give a listen,

I live walking distance from Tubby's and have enjoyed going there in the past. Last night, my boyfriend, who was visiting from out of town, and I met friends there. My boyfriend went up to the bar to order us drinks. He had enough to pay for the 2 drinks but ran out of cash for a tip. He walked back to the table where we were sitting, asking if any of us could lend him cash for a tip. As this was happening, the bartender started yelling at him from across the room. I went up to the bar and tried to talk to the bartender, explaining it was a miscommunication and offering him money. He refused and continued to insult my boyfriend and talk to me in a demeaning tone. We then promptly left. This was disheartening because all of my other experiences at Tubbys have been great. From other reviews, it seems there is a pattern with this bartender. He looked to be about in his 40s, white, with a graying beard and glasses. I can’t help but think this guy was judging my boyfriend because he’s not from here and made whatever assumptions about him. This is sad because I always thought of tubbys as having an easygoing accepting atmosphere. I'm updating this post because I found out this bartender is actually part owner of the bar. So I'm guessing the other owners are okay with his behavior and treatment towards customers. My advice is, if you still decide to go here, beware of this guy. Make sure he knows you're going to tip him, unless you want to experience a grown man having a meltdown behind the bar!

I go to Tubby's for their shows, they host great bands and the chance to be so close to the stage gives a great feeling of intimacy

Another Kingston institution. It's just one of the best places to meet up and hang out. As well, there's live music several times a week

Kyle Smith

Google
Nice, attentive bar staff, comfortable divey atmosphere and the performers they book are so consistently excellent that if I were closer (bout a coupla hrs away) i’d practically live at the place.

Google
Cool club vibe. They need to consider changing the angle of the stage so more folks can see the entertainment.

I had high hopes for Tubby’s, as it had quickly become one of my fav spots in Kingston. However, my recent experience left me deeply disappointed. I went with my crew again, and at some point during the night, I asked for the check, not to leave, just simply to check my balance so far. To my surprise, the bartender informed me that no more drinks would be served to our table because we ‘weren’t tipping.’ This was puzzling, as I wasn’t finished for the night and intended to tip once I settled the final check. If this decision was based on another friend who had left earlier without tipping, it’s unfair to punish me and my group for someone else’s actions. Even worse, one of my friends visiting us from Miami was also denied service, despite being completely uninvolved in the situation. It’s unfortunate because the bartender Bel was genuinely kind and deserved a good tip. I would have happily tipped generously at the end of the night. Instead, I felt unwelcome and embarrassed, which is not the experience I expected from a place I had come to enjoy. This was my second visit to Tubby’s, I don’t go out that often but certainly I am not going back there and none of my friends too 🙂

Google
Neighborhood bar with 6 drafts on rotation and nice happy hour special. Sweeeet menu with tots as a side, fancy tots available. Room in the back for shows and events, and Frogger/Arcade games!

Yelp
Wish I could like this place, but the bartender was racist and asking patrons if they were Zionists. Who does that? The ambiance was dark, the food was mediocre. I liked the music, but sadly due to the staff and I will never return. Thumbs down.

Yelp
Our first time ordering food! Not only do they curate exceptional beers the food matched the craft quality. Their people are cool and the music is great. We've seen some shows here but this was our first time with the bartenders spinning their choice of vinyl and we love it.

Yelp
Nice local bar with good live music. They have a good selection of mezcals. The bartender and friendly. Would go often if I lived close

Yelp
I am so happy that Tubby's exists. Having moved to Kingston recently I hoped that I would find a convenient, decent, local venue for live music. Sure the Hudson Valley has loads of great musicians and I knew of a few quality music venues but had never heard of Tubby's. Well, I love Tubby's and all other venues generally pale in comparison. They book amazing bands (local, national & intl), the space is cozy (dare I say intimate... ooh), the staff is super friendly, they play great tunes, have a solid draft/drink/food selection and reasonable prices for ALL including tickets + they even have a little outdoor patio! WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE?!

Nicholas T.

Yelp
I've only been here once (to see a music show) because I live in Oakland, CA and was visiting the Hudson Valley for a potential move there, but the presence of Tubby's in Kingston is a MAJOR reason why I feel comfortable moving there, because I'm under the strong impression that of all the music venues in the whole Hudson Valley, Tubby's is the most likely to host music shows for bands I like. At the show there I also felt like the crowd there were nice people. I'm stoked Tubby's exists, and I hope to move to a place within walking distance of there.

Yelp
Best little bar in the Hudson Valley. They do have food -- very good food (see website + menu, vegan/vegetarian friendly.)

Yelp
I really love this place. A lot. Always such a good time. Great food. Great drinks. Great people.

Yelp
Terrific corner dive bar with great locals in it. Young hip crowd...great vinyl playing. Went on Xmas night with my boy. Kitchen was sadly closed but a crock pot of vegan pasole with all trimmings was on a table for all. Another with baked goods. Played obscure Mexican records. Try the Woodstock IPA if on draft. M

Yelp
Was in Kingston for work and went to Tubby's two nights in as many days. Great dive-bar vibe, with a classy feel that elevates it a bit, but it remains hovering somewhere under gastropub. The atmosphere is great, with low lighting and unique decorative touches that make it feel like your friend's house, or maybe his basement bar. The meat on the burger was so tender and flavorful, we have no idea how they got a rare burger to be so smooth... it was delicious. We also had the Frito pie and were impressed by both its simplicity and ability to pack a punch at the same time. They have 6 house made sauces to play around with, which made the bar dinner even more exciting! Overall, a great neighborhood joint that easily makes out-of-towners feel right at home!

Yelp
My favorite bar/venue in the area--always a great mix of musicians, excellent mezcal selection, and just a sweet vibe all around. Even the music between sets or on non-performance nights is *so* good and different from what you'd hear at any place in town. I find myself shazaming half the night. The new food menu has been fabulous too! Rosie, the baker, makes an awesome selection of vegan foods that are perfect fuel for a night out. I appreciate that they're conscientious of COVID and require vaccine proof at their shows (it's a small venue, so it gets packed easily during a show making distancing impossible). The patio is a favorite of mine with it's faux grass and summer-y feel. Spent many a night laughing and making friends back there. Looking forward to many more!

Yelp
We're up in Kingston for the weekend, were supposed to see a show at the UPAC but it was cancelled due to Corona...aye dios mio. Our original plan was to eat and drink at Tubbys before the show. We decided to stick with our plan and very happy that we did. Awesome cocktails Great burgers, empanadas and their Tater Tots are cooked to perfection. They make a Nachos variation called Totchos.. get em.. awesome. Very interesting DJ the night we were there playing tropical Exotica.. loved it...got turned on to a new musical genre to torture my wife with. Go visit Tubbys!!

Yelp
Delicious skinny flavor filled grass fed burger. Fab bartender. Hipster crowd. Great bartender who just moved to Kingston from Austin Texas. Midtown Kingston.

Yelp
omg this was the worst place ever. no food only frozer pizza. no bacardi. a real lie when you look at thier website. clueless staff. it truly should be shut down. Also very dark. No lights. When you have to walk through a curtain when you enter. It should be time to turn around and find a real establishment.

Clarissa G.

Yelp
Weird people, bad drinks... I guess they cater to a certain demographic. Cool but not a great time. The drinks we got were bad too. Overall a little disappointing and feeling misled by the reviews.

Yelp
The menus is not overwhelming in size but is overwhelming with flavor. The Tatchoses are fantastic but order two because one will not due! :-) The Herbed Grilled Cheese and Chicken Sandwich we're both a hit. But the Mescal Margarita was my favorite. My wife would suggest you not eat the jalapeño peppers as she is a light weight when it comes to anything spicy!

Lisa M.

Yelp
HORRIFYING CUSTOMER SERVICE We ordered sandwiches from Tubby's at the Kingston Farmers Market. They were not at all equipped to handle multiple orders at a time. After waiting 20 minutes, we received only 3 of our 4 egg sandwiches. Feeling pressed for time, and seeing that the fourth sandwich had not even been started yet, my partner cancelled his order and asked for a refund on the last sandwich. The man behind the grill refused to refund our $6 (cash) and was incredibly rude about it. We will NEVER go to Tubby's - EVER.

Yelp
No acknowledgement at all when my bf and I walked in. Nothing indicative if the bar tender was the only service or not but seemed to be and she couldn't be bothered to look up. Reminded me of the low brow bars for regulars only . We walked right back out , what a waste of time and no added value to mid -town. Service matters as much as food in a foodie town.

Yelp
Good food, great agave spirits selection, dope vibe, live music. What else do ya need?

Yelp
The food and the sauces are good but the service is always horrendous. For example, I showed up with a few friends, we all ordered food and a drink. Food didnt come so we ordered another drink. Everyone else in the bar who came after us got their food but we didnt. Ordered a third drink and were ensured our food was on the way and this "never happens". Come on, how hard is it to dump Sam's club tater tots into a fryer and hand them out in the proper order? Our totchos finally came and the bartender came over with a 4th drink for me saying it was on them for the mess up.... there were 4 drinks on my bill and I waited over an hour and a half for my totchos. But he sauces are really good!

Yelp
Well........possibly a first and last. Positive first: Kudos to Tubby's for the baked mac and beer cheese, as well as the perfectly seasoned tots. My party of four were able to share two orders of the mac and cheese and one order of the tots. It certainly was plenty for all of us. On the other hand, the grapefruit mule my friend ordered.....not the best. The service to send it back.... .even worse. We've had our share of various mules and although that was explained to the bartender, she insisted (after tasting it) that it was made the normal way that they always make it and "it's a mule. That's how it's supposed to taste. Does anyone else in your group want it bc it still has to be paid for?" My response "we all tasted it and no, we don't want it. Thank you." Well, since the drink still had a cost attached, the idea of simply getting a different drink for the same cost fell upon deaf ears. I get that bills need to be paid but I suppose working with the client just isn't a thing anymore. So we paid, left and found ourselves in another part of Kingston for the night. Tubby's: Keep on rockin'.

Yelp
Tubby's is quaint and cozy. I love the shows they put on along with their cocktails. I'd definitely tell anyone to stop by Tubby's for a drink a show.

Yelp
This little hidden gem (not so hidden, it's on the "main" road) brought life back to a corner bar that had been troubled. It has a lengthy history and of all things, I'm glad it's not another vacant building in Kingston. They had live music and there were PEOPLE there at the bar. Crazy, right. The bartender poured a good drink and kept conversation. I haven't had this experience in Kingston in like 16 years. Refreshing.

Yelp
The burger is a 10/10. They have a great beer selection and play an eclectic mix of music on vinyl. Could not recommend this place more!

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar with small but good selection of beers on tap... affordable, quick bar food with an emphasis on veg options...

Krystal S.

Yelp
Brunch is so good, I recommend the grand slam with vegan sausage. Any other night of the week, Tubby's is chill with a good crowd. Live music in the back can be too loud for convo in the front, but there's a good rotation of bands.

Brendan S.

Yelp
Amazing place. Great food. Great drinks. Good prices. Owners are cool. I don't need to say more...yelp....it's not necessary.

Bethany P.

Yelp
Tubby's is the best place in Kingston to get sauced. Especially if you love ranch dressing.

Alan S.

Yelp
We are here for a show at UPAC. We were looking for dinner before the show . Looked in and walked away. We came back and really glad we did. What a wonderful surprise. Ambiance and music and sound is great. Food is flavorful, fresh and delicious. Will definitely come back

Yelp
Tubby's is the real deal. A laid back joint with great food and killer music selections on vinyl. Everything from the tater tots to the live entertainment is expertly curated but nothing about this place is pretentious. Friendly staff, veggie options, extremely chill environment. Go to Tubby's in Kingston.

KC S.

Yelp
Awesome food, great drinks and reasonably priced. Vegetarian/vegan friendly. Pinball, super chill patio area, lots of eclectic live music and events. Great addition to midtown.

George C.

Yelp
My absolute favorite new place in the neighborhood. Great food (tater tots come with EVERYTHING), cheap drinks, live music, pinball, and really nice owners. Oh, and at least 6 delicious dipping sauces will appear on your table. That kind of says it all.

Matt D.

Yelp
great midtown spot- amazing staff, great low cost food and awesome musical line up.
