The Best Bars and Restaurants in Saint-Henri | Eater Montreal

"One of the precursors to the neighbourhood’s burgeoning food scene, Tuck Shop has consistently been a favourite of both visitors and locals over the years. Its menu, while often seasonal, remains consistent with the same sophisticated eats and market cuisine that have fuelled its popularity since the very start. Fresh salads, oysters, hanger steak with chimichurri, Quebec pork chop or duck breast, and local seafood are all items diners will typically find on their daily menu." - Eater Staff

Tuck Shop is an absolute must-visit if you’re in town. Everything — from the food to the service to the atmosphere — is outstanding. The staff are some of the friendliest and kindest I’ve ever encountered, with incredibly fast and attentive service. The food was delicious across the board, with highlights including the seasonal king crab, the octopus, their classic steak frites, and the chocolate dessert. I cannot recommend Tuck Shop enough and will definitely be coming back.

Recently booked a table at Tuck Shop, and from start to finish, everything was spot on. From the moment we walked in the door, we were immediately taken care of. The service was outstanding. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly, attentive, and made us feel right at home. They were genuinely excited to share their knowledge about the food and drinks, which made the experience even better. The wine list is great, and the staff really knows their stuff. We got an awesome recommendation for a bottle that paired perfectly with our meal. As for the food — we expected it to be so, but it was incredible. We sat at the chef's counter, and it was great to watch the chefs work their magic. Each dish was fresh, full of flavour, and beautifully presented. The menu changes every month based on what’s in season, so you know everything is always fresh and well thought out. All in all, Tuck Shop is a St. Henri and Montreal gem. Great food, excellent service, and a cool atmosphere. Can’t wait to go back!

Amazing food with really great service! Portions were really good and the prices were very reasonable. All the ingredients tasted fresh and the sauces were really great!

Fantastic food and even better people! Went for a family supper and really appreciated the extra care the staff took to make it special, from the attention to detail of the impeccable food prepared to the Filipino music to end the night (thanks gab you made a memorable night that much better!) Highly recommend for great food, vibes and service !

Came here for a girls night, very cute setting, with a small but yummy menu. Staff is attentive and friendly and happy to answer questions and provide recommendations. As someone with celiac, I wouldn’t recommend due to cross contamination and the options were limited. However, for a regular person, definitely worth trying. The highlight of the dinner was the pork belly, absolutely delicious!

My husband and I had an absolutely delicious meal at Tuck Shop. We sat at the Chef's Table, which is always a fun experience for a restaurant to offer (I love an open kitchen). Gabriel, our server, was very attentive – as was the bartender and the rest of the staff. The food was incredible, and all was plated SO beautifully – Michelin star level plating. We started with oysters, and loved their specialty hot sauce that they had on the side. We then split the grilled octopus (which was so tender and not at all chewy like you sometimes get), the pork belly (which came in the most incredible sauce), the Duck Duo (yum!), and the Chocolate Nemesis dessert – which was the only thing I managed to take a picture of. We left with very happy stomachs. Highly recommend!

Google
Amazing meal and service. Dining at the chefs counter was also a great chance to see the "show". Cocktails were well balanced and every dish we ate was on point. To highlight a few.... The mushrooms were the most surprising dish. Great flavor combination with the persimmon that gave the meatiness of the mushroom but with the freshness of a salad. The Salmon Chowder with mussels was rich and fresh at the same time. The duck with its sauces were one of the best bites of the night. The lemon curd was also the perfect balance of tart and sweet. Would highly recommend Tuck Shop to fellow foodies.

Google
Went for Valentine's day. They had a set menu and sat us in the back "terrace" which was a little cabin with space heaters. I had been a couple time before and its always been great, but this time was exceptional. Everything we ate just melted in your mouth and blew us away!

Yelp
My wife chose this venue on a whim. Our first time to Montreéal. Came in at 4 Friday and had a 6:30 reservation. Tough getting an Uber but made it and had a wonderful evening From the drinks by Adam, great dude. To the service by he and Gabriel, C'est fantastique! Squash raviolo, focaccia, black manhattans, special cod for my wife - kudos Gabriel and the kitchen to Adam's suggested desert - lemon curd - wonderful and the chocolate cake - even I, a non-chocolate guy loved it... Great! Wonderful evening, company and staff. Highly recommended and the staff and kitchen were truly appreciated Tres bien!!! Kudos JW

Yelp
Seriously one of the best meals I've ever eaten in my life. Service was top notch and the food is indescribable. Do yourself a favor and go!

Yelp
Packed house on a Friday night for excellent food and great vibes! I enjoyed a perfectly grilled hangar steak which has been a longtime option at this popular spot! My after dinner coffee was delicious as well, I highly recommend this spot in Montreal's St Henri neighborhood!

Yelp
My husband and our son recently spent a day in Montreal celebrating our son's birthday. We chose the Tuck Shop for dinner. Everything about it was amazing! The service was outstanding and the food was excellent. We had a very enjoyable evening there and we will return! Thank you to the Tuck Shop for the perfect ending to our day!

Yelp
What an extraordinary restaurant -- and within walking distance of our BnB. We started with six lovely, briny oysters. Followed by the best chicken liver pate I have ever had. With a tiny rectangle of savory bread pudding to spread it on and fabulous home pickled veggies. Did I mention the crisp chicharon de pollo inserted into the top of the pate? Wow! My friend had the amazing, extraordinary hangar steak avec frites. The best hangar steak ever. (I had the leftovers for lunch the following day -- that's how big it was.) I had the magret du canard. (Duck breast to us gringos.) It was huge. Several ducks' breasts? And lovingly prepared. And delicious. The downside was that we had no room for dessert. Did I mention a fabulous bottle of wine? It must have been a rose but in fact the color was more towards orange than pink -- and it was fabulous. If only I could remember the name. Truck Shop is a five star, don't miss, take an Uber from downtown sort of restaurant. Be sure to make a reservation. Even on a week night. It's that good.

Yelp
Maybe I've been there too much to appreciate its value. Service doesn't meet expectations- felt pushed out.

Yelp
Wow, thoroughly impressed by Tuck Shop. Delicious oysters and razor clams. The duck dish was great too. And to top it off, that coconut pie - like a cloud! I was actually surprised how light each dish was. We were not super hungry so appreciated being able to still enjoy the meal thoroughly without committing to large portions. On the beverages front - delicious cocktails. There is no cocktail menu, we mentioned it while looking through the drinks menu and the waitress heard us and told the bartender to come talk with us. Now that's service! Get yourself a reservation in the outdoor area - they have a garden out back and it's beautiful and calming. Indoor is okay as well but can feel a bit busier. Overall I highly recommend Tuck Shop and will be coming back on my next Mtl trip!

Yelp
Let's get the music over with first: When your waiter is SHOUTING at you over the music and when you respond says he can't hear you because of how loud the music is, that might be a hint. The atmosphere is definitely "lively". If you want to speak, be sure to ask for a table outside. Now to the food - minus the desserts which are made by the chef's mother, it was just OK. For the price point, none of us were impressed. The salmon and lamb portions were really small. The greens served with the lamb were so bitter they were inedible. The pork chop was a decent size but the flavor was not impressive. It was difficult to cut through the green tops of the radishes. They just looked like a mess on the plate. A several hundred dollar lesson - I would not do again.

Stewart L.

Yelp
The food was excellent. Wine prices very reasonable. But, the attention given to us by every employee from the hostess, to waiter, to wine steward to owner was over the top. While the food can be great, what makes a meal memorable is the fun and interaction with the staff. I can't say enough about the staff at Tuck Shop. We ate outside (thanks to the last minute DINR reservation). While the inside can be a bit loud, the outside is perfect. One of my favorite meals ever. Also, during the pandemic, they kept all of their staff employed. It didn't matter that the whole restaurant was suffering. That says a lot about the character of the owners.

Yelp
Outstanding! We sat outside. The service was great and the dishes were outstanding. All of the meat was cooked perfectly.

Yelp
It's a very good restaurant, and one of the original fancy/comfort food places in this city. Cooking-wise, there is nothing particularly revolutionary about the food, but almost every dish tastes like a treat of sorts......kind of like tuck for those of us who went to sleep away camp as kids. With an weekly changing menu, they often feature cod, cornish hen, braised beef, pork belly, and seafood pasta. Nevertheless, in the half dozen times I've eaten here over the years, I have a hard time ordering anything else but their hangar steak with chimichurri and fries. The hangar steak is amongst the most tender pieces of meat you will find. The chimichurri, however is what sets this dish miles above the competition. You can get steak and fries at 1000 restaurants in this city. You will be hard pressed to find a chimichurri like this in Montreal. The parsley is fresh, coarsely chopped, deliciously salty, and bright green. It packs an acidic punch and pairs very well with the flavourful beef and the fries which are excellent. Their market salad, although boring at first glance, is actually an elevated dish. They subtly weave in ricotta, nuts, pomegranate seeds, and citrus with very fresh greens and vegetables. I'm not usually a salad guy. Although I enjoy them, I usually order something a little more exciting to start a meal. Even with excellent appetizers like sea urchin, octopus, and beef tartare, this salad is worth it. On my last visit, my wife and I shared the market salad and corned beef appetizer to start. My god was this corned beef amazing. They only give you a 2 ounce portion as an appetizer. (It's brisket, not beluga caviar. Give me a bit more for chrissakes!) Nevertheless, one bite of this cured meat and I'm transported to Katz's deli in NYC. The flavours were that rich and deep. It really makes me wonder what they could accomplish if they wanted to feature this as a main somehow. Or, how about just keeping it as an appetizer and serving it with some good mustard and a pickle. I don't need it placed upon a bed of red cabbage puree with barley and 5 other "foodie" like components. Don't get me wrong because I like "foodie" composition of elements in a dish if that's what is called for and it adds something. With corned beef however, just serve it properly. The protein shines on its own. Their pecan pie and brownie with ice cream desserts are both excellent. On the annoying side, they don't take reservations online, and even by phone, securing a table during regular dining hours is like winning a raffle at your office. The restaurant is small and quite cramped. You always have to leave a message and wait for a callback. I'm sure they have their reasons for this, but from a customer's point of view, it's annoying, slow, and inefficient. On our last visit, service was generally good, but our table never got bread and butter. Also, when we ordered a couple of single malt scotches, they came back with one of the stingiest pours you can imagine....not even a finger....maybe a child's finger.... Despite the glitches. when you finally do get a table here, you probably won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I hate to admit how much I like the food at this semi-swanky outpost that caters to a more monied crowd, but they do the seasonal new-Canadian fare thing exceptionally well. And to be honest, the prices are not that outrageous... but there is a slightly pretentious vibe. Nothing too adventurous, but everything was fresh, packed with flavor, and well balanced. Hard to argue with quality. Will be returning.

Yelp
Fab meal from start to end: heirloom tomato &burrata, eggplant & smoked mozzarella mezzaluna pasta, and a massive pork chop with grilled peaches. Terrific cocktails, lovely service, can't wait to come back! Ps: too full for dessert but it looked great!

Yelp
Received numerous suggestions to go here. Ended up making time to check it out for a 9pm dinner over the summer. Overall, staff was nice (Gian and Michelle particularly), but the service was pretty terrible and the food was so incredibly mediocre, not to mention overpriced. Waited an hour for our entrees and the steak was cold. The crudo to start was just fine and same with the mushrooms we got. Also had a salmon (I believe?) which was a 5/10. Nothing memorable as you can see. As we were visiting from New York, it was particularly unenjoyable to have eaten here since it was our only night out not with family. There are countless better restaurants with better vibes as well. Nothing terrible, but definitely not the kind of place to make time out of a busy trip for a visit.

Kyle S.

Yelp
Came here with a group of 12 - we provided some high level detail about the type of dishes we preferred and they delivered an amazing family style meal. The food, portion sizes, and service were all on point. The restaurant had a great vibe too - hip, welcoming, neighborhood vibes. Of the three restaurants we dined at (including Damas) while in Montreal, this was by far the best. Special shout out to the one of the lovely owners, Amelia . I'll be back the next time I'm in Montreal.

Yelp
We had great early dinner last night. Everything was spot on, grilled octopus with pancetta and potatoes, the artichokes were a tad on the salty side, beef cheeks and the cod. Great job on the presentation and texture combination. Be aware that it is noisy and the tables are super close together.

Yelp
Ok so... I was actually really looking forward to having dinner here. The space is nice, the greetings at the door by the staff was very pleasant. I was running a little late and my dinner party was already seated with wine. Then our waitress came and explained the menu, so on & so forth. She was not rude or anything but she was not the most enthusiastic person I've ever met either. We settled for the pork belly, the lobster mushrooms, the steak, the crudo and the fish. Everything tasted good, although the lobster mushroom was not what I usually had before and it was kinda bland. When we were almost done, the waitress came back to let us know that we had to leave for the second service to come in (which we knew already) and said that some items on the dessert menu would take too long to prepare while verbally going through them. We were a bit taken aback as it felt... passive aggressive. Another waiter came by a few minutes later and brought us the actual dessert menu and was very nice about it, to which our waitress later claimed (half jokingly) "He always makes me look bad doing that!" We are all allowed a bad day or two I guess but I'd try to keep my personal issues from surfacing while at work. Now don't get me wrong, it wasn't the worst experience I've ever had but it was however nothing special and I have other places to try before I come back here.

Yelp
The total experience... Recommended by a friend, 3 of us visited Montreal for the weekend. Tuck Shop blew us away! Our 9pm reservation had us greeted & seated almost immediately by warm, friendly staff. The restaurant was a buzz with tables full, great music and Over the Top attention to detail Now, can we talk about the food? My appetizer was a gastronomic delight, which I would return just for that-Maitake mushrooms, plums, mint, pecorino pepato. Just typing this has my mouth watering! My friends had the oysters which both types were fresh & delicious. My main course came highly suggested by the owner Mediterranean bass, green romesco, romanesco, cauliflower, wild mushrooms - my words to describe this masterpiece may get blocked so let me just say magnificently created! Pumpkin Pie with pomegranates & fresh whipped cream one forkful and you knew it was just freshly made...I can keep going with wine selections and more however I choose to end with the warmest, most attentive, caring, friendly staff I have EVER encountered. (And traveling worldwide I've dined in many great places) Tuck Shop gets an over the Top 5 rating & can't wait to make the trip back up from Ma to be spoiled again!

Marquise d.

Yelp
The struggle to get a reservation is worth it. Intimate space with fine staff and truly delicious food. They literally go the extra mile for fresh and local ingredients, as in going mushroom foraging locally summer. The pork belly is incredible. Truly one of Montreal's very, very best.

Yelp
This gem to me is one of the best places i have ever been ... it's a market cuisine ...so their menu changes almost every week .. I have been 3 times and every single time i cane out very impressed!!! First time i went i had Stuffed Zucchini flowers ... which until now has been the best i ever had ... i also had a magret de canard and the best dessert i have ever had at a restaurant A miniature pavlova ... it was beautiful to see but even tastier to eat .!!!! I seriously recommend Tuck Shop to anyone .!!! Service is very professional and food is major leagues food!!!!

Yelp
Wow! I absolutely loved this place! They hit every mark. Ambience service food portions as I walked out the door, they made sure to catch me and wish me a nice evening, "mary jane"! They remembered my name !! Seriously, come here. The pictures don't do it justice and the food is just as good as the best restaurant in town. It's a little bit loud so don't come here on a first date. I simply can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Tuck Shop is one of my favourite spots in town for a nice dinner out. Tuck Shop was one of the first restaurants to establish themselves in the now trendy Notre Dame and Courcelle area. The restaurant itself is small and cozy feeling, but always lively and normally fully booked. So be sure to call for a reservation ahead of time. The service and food at Tick Shop is always top notch and I would place them amount the best restaurants in Montreal. I've eaten there on numerous occasions and I must admit that I can't think of anything that I have not thoroughly enjoyed. The menu changes with the season, but there is typically a steak, a fish and poultry amoung other great choices to choose from. The only less than positive comment that I would make is that depending on where you are seated the restaurant can be a bit noisy. A table at the front or a seat at the bar can be a bit more intimate and less distracting.

Yelp
Upon entering you are immediately struct by the inviting vibe that Tuck Shop is known for. This is a local eatery with a lively bar scene that beckons you with signature cocktails and a great wine list. The daily menu promotes seasons fair and local produce. I appreciated the staff's deep knowledge of their menu. We dove right in with a dozen fresh, expertly chucked, large, briny oysters from heaven! Along with the normal assortment of accompaniments ( I'm a bit of a purist so no sauces for me) I was intrigued by their offering of freshly shaved horseradish which I had to try and enjoyed. We then had a flatbread with caviar, pickled onions, radish, creme fraiche, dill, seeded mustard, grated daikon and hamachi tartar which was the star of the night BTW. Next was a seaweed micro green salad with grated cured eggs and toast points. I loved the acidity and umami profile. Anytime a cured egg is on the menu i simply cannot resist. We had the Halibut as our main which did not disappoint. Perfectly seared, flaky morsels topped with dressed shoots on a bed of snappy veggies, some buttery oyster mushrooms. What I really liked about this dish was the asparagus coulis which I simply had to spoon up every last drop! A couple of crisp glasses of Domaine de Mauperthuis, Sauvignon Blanc, Saint-Bris, France, 2017 and we were in heaven. The friendly and knowledgeable staff were busy, but attentive, once I get their attention. Noise level moderate to high with low ceilings and tight quarters. The vibrant atmosphere is infectious and food inventive and eclectic. Price points were moderately high, but for this level of cuisine I had no issues. Its been reviewed a lot and therefore a reservation highly recommended.

Yelp
Bit of a strange story but I wound up getting a free meal here via an altercation I had with one of the managers who is an extremely nice guy. The drinks the food the atmosphere everything is amazing. Its along the same line as Joe Beef and is super trendy so I would imagine it's difficult to get a reservation. Also be prepared to pay a decent amount of money if you want apps, dessert, drinks etc. But it is definitely worth it!
google avatar

Naznaz N.

Yelp
Their food tastes really good, the dishes are very well presented with different sorts of flavours and definitely don't lack originality. The restaurant itself is pretty small, but I personally prefer small restaurants like this one with a nice ambiance, decor and good staff. I definitely recommend this place! It is a bit expensive tho.
google avatar

Risa D.

Yelp
Alright, I loved the atmosphere, and the company, I love sitting at the bar and drinking wine and enjoying ridiculously rich food. And the food was amazing really - perfect pork belly, and lovely duck on inventive grains and vegetables, pricey but served up in hearty portions and oh my don't even get me started on the giant slab of brownie made by the chef's mom because what a treat! and what a daunting thing! But here's my one little gumble, maybe I'm a little tired of all this heavy buttery fatty food. Maybe it gets a little one-note?

Yelp
I'll be honest - despite all the hype and rumors of amazing food, I was ready to write this place off after two failed attempts at making a reservation. Why? Because whoever oversees email and social media correspondence completely underwhelmed me with their indifference and lack of interest in making even the smallest attempt to accommodate me. We don't need to get into the nitty gritty but my unsolicited advice to Tuck Shop, is to find someone with some social skills and have that guy respond to client queries. I ended up going with a friend who unexpectedly (and successfully) made a reservation. Location: St. Henri, where gentrification is madly underway. The nearest subways are St. Henri (10-min walk) and Lionel-Groulx (15-20-min walk). Service: Excellent. The staff were super friendly, accommodating and pretty quick, making the experience a great one. We went on a Tuesday night at 6pm; it was quiet to start, but business quickly picked up and by the time we left, we had a full house. Food: Incredibly, deliciously, amazing. Seriously - you have to go. Starters: Crispy pork belly, aged Gouda, oyster mushrooms. My date loved it. Crispy stuffed zucchini blossoms, peaches, fennel, red onion, pine nuts, lemon vinaigrette. The blossoms were stuffed with (I think) ricotta, which was super flavorful. This medley of flavors was delicious. Mains: Butcher's cut, french fries, Chimichurri. I don't eat steak but I could see that those fries looked REAL good! My date really enjoyed this dish. The steak was perfectly cooked and juicy. Homemade pork and porcini ravioli w/brown butter sage sauce. One word: YUM! I loved this dish. The portion was just right for me so at the end of the meal, I didn't feel super stuffed. Flavor-wise, the sage sauce was rich and flavorful. It reminded me a little of brown gravy. Totally dee-licious. Dessert: Pecan pie and peach pie. Both were fresh and excellent. I'm not even a pie person and I really enjoyed my peach pie. I wonder if they'll sell me a whole pie? :) Price: It's up there - my meal was $50 and I didn't have any drinks or coffee. Overall, I loved the space and the vibe of this place. They have an extensive wine list and a seasonal menu that changes whenever it suits the chef, making this little gem a favorite with the locals. The downside: We were thoroughly enjoying ourselves until the yuppy/hipster doofus couple arrived with their kid in tow, and what looked like the entire contents of her toy chest. What followed next was a noisy and lengthy display of douchebaggery courtesy of the father, that no one should have to endure. These people had zero respect for us (we were right next to them) and seemed to forget that they were in a restaurant, not their living room. It basically ruined the rest of our evening and we couldn't wait to get the hell out of there. The 3-star rating takes this into account, as well as the indifferent (read: lousy) attitude I recieved both times I tried to make a reservation. Had it not been for these two negatives, this place would've scored a big, fat FIVE! I suggest making a reservation as this place seems to be consistently busy.

Yelp
I want to live here forever. Guys I never in my life experienced such service from waitstaff in my life! Its incredible. The food.. oh my God. Everything we took was just better than the next..overall amazing food and the attention to details when it comes to the food is just the chery on top! I highly recommend this place. They also recently renovated.. I'm excited to check it out.

Yelp
We were a party of 8 and we all really enjoyed our meal. As starters, we had oysters, wild mushrooms and a salad. The salad was a mixed of kale, pomegranate. It has a very refreshing taste. It took a bit of time before we received our main course, but our attentive waitress compensate us with a cocktail each. We had duck magret which was very tender and tasty. The Icelandic cod was cook at perfection and the squid ink tagliatelle was just amazing. Since this place has an open kitchen concept, it may be a bit more noisy. I recommend this restaurant to everyone :).

Yelp
Heard great things about this place and many friends came on several occasions so I was excited to try it. The dishes were ok but nothing extraordinary. The crispy pork belly was a bit too dry. Friends told me that the pork belly usually melts in your mouth but it wasn't the case. My friend took the chicken and it was way too salty. I took the squid ink tagliatelle with crab and was pretty good. It was my friend's bday so they brought him a dessert...but charged for it...seriously?!? Our server Jian was very attentive I must say. Overall not bad but will not be returning anytime soon.

Yelp
Just had a great night out w my girlfriends at Tuck Shop. Our server, Jonathan, was great. Very attentive & helpful & knowledgeable with his wine recommendations. I ordered an old fashioned to start, which was just w bit too sweet, but overall was ok. I then had 1/2 dozen oysters (delicious) w bubbles & the beef shoulder with a lovely full bodied red (Mourvèdre/Franc blend). It was all very good, but none of the dishes blew me away. All were solid fare though. My main issue was that I found the main dish a bit salty to my taste - it was still good & very flavourful but a tad salty. The ambiance & service are really the standouts here. I'd definitely consider coming back cause it was a FUN dining experience w friends.

Yelp
We were at this restaurant for my nephew's wedding reception and I must say that over all we were very impressed with the food and the service. Everything was delicious and we had choices of fish, pork, beef, and veal and they were all well prepared and flavourful. The salads were top notch as were the french fries, albeit too salty so I wondered if they mistakenly were seasoned twice. There was a good selection of appetizer's as well as desserts--something for every taste. We did have two issues: one with my son's allergies in as much as that they got the main course correct for him so that there were no nuts incorporated but his salad was supposed to be nut free and this was not the case. And also, my brother in law's wife ordered a nut free salad and never received. Had it not been for those things I would have given them 5 stars! Regardless, we recommend this this restaurant and believe that you won't be disappointed.

Chris B.

Yelp
Hands down the best restaurant in Montreal. Not only is this menu well done, the drinks, ambiance and most importantly staff are top notch. Any meal here will be the best as well as the small things the service team will do. This restaurant deserves to be in the top 3-5 of Montreal.

Yelp
I'm not sure if you use the word tuck-shop in Canada, but to me, it means a rubbish little school shop where you can buy unhealthy snacks and sweets. This places is NOTHING like the tuck shop at my school! This Tuck shop is awesome!! We probably did tuck shop all wrong. I went in a group of four (all of us looove good food...) and we were so excited by all the gorgeous starters that we ended up ordering all of them...and then ignoring the main courses. This meant that we got to try lots of teeny bites of heaven (rather than munching a whole dish each.) If you have friends that can cope with sharing, it was actually a really nice way to try lots of their dishes. - The scallops and oysters were both perfect. - Stuffed courgette flowers - Ohmygoodness! I could have eaten plates and plates of these!! They were sooooo delicious! - The crispy fish tacos - I probably wouldn't have ordered this, but my friends were all up for it - the flavours went perfectly together. - Jerk hen - This was a jerk flavoured chicken sitting on black bean purée. I loved it. - Beef tartar - This was pretty good. - Pork Belly - I am a bit of a pork belly snob, but this was really good. It was tougher than I'm used to in Japanese restaurants (there is no way you could cut this version with chopsticks) but the flavour was gorgeous. - Mushrooms on toast - I am pretty sure the description was posher, but it was essentially delicious mushrooms on toast. This was delightful too! This was probably one of the priciest meals I had in Montreal...but it was still really worth it! Yum!! **I wasn't very impressed with our waitress...but the food was so good that it seems a shame for them to lose a star just for that.**

Yelp
Getting an RSVP at one of Montreal's best restaurants has become difficult. Liverpool House? Three-week wait. Le Hangar? Sure there's room, if you want to eat before 5:30pm or after 10:30pm. Bremner? No matter how early you plan, making an RSVP is difficult if no one answers the phone or calls you back - well done on joining Opentable. Ah yes, planning a night out is currently necessary even in Montreal, especially since popular restaurant trends promote smaller, cozier, bustling restaurants that fill up fast. That's how I finally ended up at Tuck Shop. I've wanted to try this place for a while, so I called a week early to reserve for a group, and opted for the dinner-table-style menu that includes 4 appetizers and 2 mains (a steal at $45 per person). A taste of everything for everyone? Aww yeahhh. We started with a salad - white beets, coriander, mango, arugula, radish, cucumbers and parmesan. It was yummy and refreshing, especially with the tart lemony dressing. Next, we had the most delicious smoked salmon ever. At Tuck Shop, the salmon is wild, house cured and smoked, and comes with "potato rosti", trout caviar and crème fraiche. And I repeat - delicious. Our third appetizer consisted of cheese tacos. Made with fried mozzarella, coriander, corn and lettuce, they were soft and delightful. Awesome, because tacos can easily be flavourless. It might be surprising, but it's true. Our last appetizer included caramelized salmon with bok choy, root veggies and quinoa. The salmon was crispy on the outside and prepared to the point of a perfect soft pink on the inside. The veggies were cooked but crunchy. Delish. Having forgotten how many dishes were included in our menu, we thought our meal was over. Lo and behold, the waitress came over to tell us that our mains were on their way. Oh baby! These included the most mouthwatering jerk chicken accompanied by black bean purée and fried okra. It was spicy and juicy and everything jerk chicken should be. Perfection. Finally, our last main consisted of hanger steak with chimichurri, wild mushrooms and rapini. Again, so good. And the best part? We didn't even have to say "medium-rare". We wrapped up our meal with three delicious desserts to share. Tiramisu, warm apple pie, and caramel fleur de sel "cheesecake". The tiramisu was good, but not something to rave about. It's ok - a tiny bit of sub-perfection makes Tuck Shop human. The apple pie was amazing - warm and so satisfying with its crumbly crust and just-sweet-enough apple center. Needless to say, our favorite was the caramel fleur de sel "cheesecake" that was more of a silken cheesy-caramel-y-salty-cream than a cheesecake. Whoa. Yes, I absolutely loved Tuck Shop. It made me think of a smaller Orignal and a non-pretentious Garde Manger. The music was super fun (Tom Petty and Gypsy Kings, anyone?) and added to the bon-vivant vibe that permeated the small restaurant. The service was good and the food was varied and delicious. I do hope that Tuck Shop's tables continue to be difficult to book for a while - it would certainly be well deserved. Food 9.5/10, Atmosphere 9.5/10, Pretty people 9/10, Music (superfun, goodvolume) 9.5/10, Service 8.5/10. Pictures: http://www.belledenuitmontreal.com/posts/tuck-shop/

Yelp
I find "Tuck Shop" an odd name for a restaurant, although part of me is convinced it's short for "Tucked in a Spot Where You'd Never Expect to Find This Type of Restaurant". In fact the reason my friend, a native Montrealer, took me here was because he figured I'd never find the place on my own. Having been there now, I'm convinced he's right and am grateful to have had the experience. (Edit - I now know what a "tuck shop" is) The restaurant is tiny, but manages to squeeze quite a few tables into the place; I'm guessing there's seating for about 40. It's loud, both from customers and music. When we arrived we were informed a table wasn't ready yet and were eventually seated at one of two bars, this one facing the kitchen. After ordering cocktails and sipping on them for about 5 minutes, the hostess came to deliver us to.... the other bar. After we looked at her rather funny and asked why we were being moved to the other bar, she sat us at a table. (Never did get an explanation there.) Our friendly waiter went through the specials of the day, and we settled on the soup for my friend and the salad for me for starters. Neither one were anything worth writing home about. While I wasn't expecting much from the salad (it's a salad, after all), the soup could have been better. For our mains my friend went with one of the fish of the day dishes, which was a cod that he loved. I went for the braised lamb & gnocchi - the gnocchi was outstanding and soaked up all the love, while the lamb was so tender I was afraid the loud music was going to cause it to fall apart. Unfortunately after all that we had no room left for dessert. The service on the whole was good, but we did have to fight to flag our waiter down after dinner. We also are still trying to figure out the move from one bar to another. That not withstanding, this is definitely a place worth tracking down.

Yelp
I had been hearing about the awesomeness of Tuck Shop for a quite a while now so when the opportunity came up to go check it out with a friend, it did not take much convincing to go. Reservations are a must given the popularity of this little resto that could. Tuck Shop is quickly joining the ranks of Joe Beef, Liverpool House, Au Pieds de Cochon, and all the other popular eateries in Montreal. Thankfully I scored reservations at the last minute for the same evening and was seriously looking forward to an awesome meal out with excellent company. Reader, the food was impeccable. Not a bad note anywhere. I ordered the much recommended crispy pork belly and there's a reason why everyone is raving about it: it's THAT good. Melt-in-your-mouth perfection sitting in a smooth creamy sauce. It will definitely whet your appetite for more! The hanger steak was just as divine. A simple, juicy steak, which I ordered medium, and it came as medium, smothered with chimichurri sauce, that wonderful South American parsley and garlic condiment, along with just perfect, crispy homemade fries. The pecan pie was rich, creamy and just the right amount of sweet. I was loving every bite. Everything was going along swimmingly until the young yuppie family from hell showed up next to our table. Bringing your one-year old along with her her toy trunk to a popular eatery is NOT cool and this is where Tuck Shop loses their stars. I can understand wanting to accommodate your clients, yes, but accommodating them at the expense of other clients, no. Had circumstances been different, I would have given Tuck Shop a full five stars, no problem and without any hesitation but given the experience last night, I just can't. [Memo to young hipster/yuppie parents: I get that you want to continue the lifestyle you had before the kids came along, I really do. But there is no way on God's good earth a crying 1 year old or 2 year old will ever understand what eating at a popular new restaurant really means. A kid at that age is just thinking cartoons and sugar. Please take them to McDonald's and if you still have your heart set on eating out at places like Tuck Shop, get a babysitter and then go on your date night.]

Yelp
Here's my story... I went to the Tuck Shop with 3 friends yesterday evening. I made the reservation myself and made a point that we were a party of 4 people that like to talk loud and the hostess suggested that we sit at the kitchen counter our back to the dining room. Music was loud so was the kitchen noise and chefs talking to each other. The manager (assume he was), told us that 5 table (yup, a big 5) were complaining that we were too loud. We may well have been, but it was told to us in such a way (i.e. he was a dick) that I would never go back to this place. We all agree that food that we had up until then was great and the waitress very nice... Too bad this guy doesn't have any manner. We paid and went elsewhere to have desert and coffee. If you're a quiet party, you might enjoy.

Yelp
This restaurant is part of the wave of trendy chef-centric bistros popping up in Griffintown, or the Pointe, or whatever name is being used to describe the down-but-not-yet-out area around Atwater and Notre Dame. It's small but cozy, and the atmosphere is industrial crossed with baroque/trendy. Very casual and very relaxed. The service is really friendly and the waitstaff are cool and unpretentious. The food is delicious - we sampled all sorts of things, from deep fried okra to delicious rare steak with shitaake mushrooms and wine sauce, to seafood and lentil salad, to trendy new classics like pork belly. Decent wine selection as well, and the prices are not unreasonable at all. Highly recommended!!!

Yelp
Oh Tuck shop how you always put such a smile on my face and satisfy my belly. Speaking of belly the pork belly at Tuck Shop is one of the best I have ever had and a must every time I go. Great atmosphere at Tuck shop and fantastic food. Try the lamb shank or the duck breast and you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Stopped in here on a whim for a quick drink and dessert and will definitely be returning for a full course. Passing by, the seats at the window looked so inviting, and once inside, service was just as. Inside the restaurant was very cute! With little sunflowers on each table and a charming dining room - there's also a bar. We ordered the brownie, and the pecan pie. Both full of flavour and will satisfy any sweet tooth! I also had a sage and bourbon drink (don't quite remember the name) and she had a latte, they were served up in a very cute fashion and both tasted delicious. Servers were attentive the whole way through and the whole experience left me wanting to return.

Yelp
Food was delicious, The host at the door was very pleasant and the atmosphere is moderate and cozy. The service is ok, they have a small kitchen for the food takes a little longer then I like to come out, the Bartender who is also an owner never really let us know if it would be coming shortly or what was up.. As a bartender myself, I appreciate when whoever is serving me, keeps me in the loop. ex; we have a small kitchen so it shouldn't be much much longer.. But that might just be me coming from the service industry. I like interaction with my waiter or bartender regardless of how fancy a place may be. It's defnetly worth the try if you've never been!

Yelp
I went to Montreal this past weekend (April 2017) for my bachelorette party with a group of 10 ladies in our mid-30's. We all love to eat, so naturally Tuck Shop was on the list compiled by my incredible maid-of-honor. It did not disappoint! The ambiance is rustic and cozy, the staff was superb and the food and drink were fantastic. We did the chef's menu and everything was creative and cooked to perfection. They were also able to cater to special needs like no dairy and pescatarian. Everything was delicious but the stand outs for me were: steak tartare that was perfectly seasoned; endive wrap with shrimp and crispy bacon; and pork belly in a cheddar style gravy. I live in Manhattan, NY so being blown away by food is not an easy feat, but Tuck Shop nailed it. The house made salted caramel dessert was slap your momma good. Or the owner's mom! Apparently the owner's mom makes some of the desserts, which is a really nice personal touch. Wine selection was good as were the cocktails. Someone wanted an espresso martini after dinner and although it wasn't on the menu, the bartender made a phenomenal one that had the rest of the party ordering them as well. And when they ran out of Bailey's? They just made it to order with Kaluha and a touch of cream. Were were a big party and could have been super annoying, but the staff was AMAZING and we had a lot of fun with them! We wound up having a mini-dance party, DJed by the bartender, once the rest of the tables cleared out. It was honestly such a fun night for us all. I can't say enough good things about the food, the staff and the owner. Go, and you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Small unassuming place that changes their menu every so often. Cool decor and vibe inside their 30 seat restaurant. Call for a reservation. We had their beef tartar and pork belly to start and a salmon dish and lamb meal for mains. Everything was incredible! I could go on at length about how all the listed ingredients really make their dishes amazing but honestly you just need to go. A bit outside of downtown montreal but take the metro out and it's less than a 10 minute walk from the station.

Yelp
Best meal I had while visiting Montreal. Called to make a reservation, no space was available but when a spot opened up the restaurant called me immediately and over me 2 seats at the oyster bar. Decide to go and it was a great decision. Oysters were delicious, the shucker was a great guy who really knew what he was doing. Great cocktails, new and fun French food, great staff that wanted to deliver a great experience and succeeded.

Yelp
If you can handle the constructions sites that pleague Montreal, you should definitively try TUCK SHOP in St-Henri. Expect to pay at least $150 for two if you both take an appetizer and a drink; but every penny is worth it! I was looking for a new restaurant to try for my wedding anniversary, and my husband gave me very little in terms of limits: money wise and not going through 2 bridges! I had to ask a work colleague to help me, he's the closest thing to a foodie that I know! Thanks Barry! ;) Since my reservation was made last minute (Friday for Saturday), we we lucky to get 2 spots at the oyster bar... but we love sitting at the bar anyway. After watching the chef chucking oysters, my husband tried both kinds (Connecticuts and a New Brunswick kind) and I had a beef tartar, which was too made in front of me. To say that it was good would be an understatement. Fresh ingredients, prepared with care and know-how and prettily arranged. The appetizers were followed by pork ravioli for my husband and their snow crab for me (although hubby finished off half of my plate! ). I must mention the service team because they were exceptional, each and every one of them. They all came around and made us feel very welcomed and very special, which is very good when you try a new restaurant for the first time. Thank you all at TUCK SHOP for a fantastic meal and experience, we shall go back again!

Yelp
We had a fantastic dinner at Tuck Shop. I'd give it 5 stars if it weren't for our server who disappeared right after our mains came out and failed to give descriptions of our meals. We had to wave down the (very lovely) hostess to bring us our coffee and dessert. We started with the oysters. Two choices, the best homemade cocktail sauce I have ever tasted. Next we had the OCTOPUS which I cannot recommend more because it was insanely delicious. Cooked to absolute perfection- fluffy, tender and juicy. The accoutrements were also fantastic (creamy hummus & baba ganoush, crispy little falafels and fresh labneh). We also had the pork belly entree which was also delicious, but a little more on the unhealthy side with delicious oyster mushroom floating in a heavy cream sauce. Yum all the same. For our mains, we had the sea bass and the lamb shank- both delicious- flavours that melded perfectly. For dessert, the restaurant offers homemade pies baked by the chef's mother. We had the pecan. Yum.
