"Shelter Island’s best ice cream shop has gotten subtle upgrades over the years but it’s never lost its no-frills charm; ice cream fans gather on the benches by the curb, spill into the parking lot, or take a seat in the appealingly cozy back lawn." - Elise Taylor

An old fashioned ice cream store. We never go to Shelter Island w/o stopping in for a treat.

Google
Love it. Nothing says summer on Shelter Island like an afternoon visit to Tuck Shop!!!

Google
Fabulous ice cream, worth the long line. Got the ferry sundae which was superb. Only complaint is getting the unpleasant “stare” when they turn the screen for the tip on the credit card, not appropriate for a local ice cream place. They should just have a tip jar. Here’s your 20% (really?) but I won’t be back.

Google
We stopped in and saw they serve multiple varieties of coffee. Being an ICE CREAM SHOP, we were looking for ICED coffee, we were told no, they don't have ice -_-. We then looked into a small cup of ice cream, $5 not bad, but when we went to pay, we were told $20 min for card. I will just say it's not worth meeting the min.

Jack

Google
I had the chocolate chip ice cream sandwich and you could taste the difference. The cookie was a fresh baked cookie and the ice cream was homemade. Everyone else loved their ice cream.

Sarah

Google
Let me start by saying there’s a $20 minimum on cards in a day and age when nobody carries cash anymore and even if they did who’s spending $20 on an ice cream store especially when you’re one person?! Second the “soft serve” was literally hard ice definitely not running long enough to be soft in the machine…the soft serve was $7.50 and comically small…and being one person not needing a second ice cream I bought a pint to meet the minimum. Then they have these poor girls working asking people if they’d like to leave a graituity and staring at you while you do….normally I’d give a gratuity but after being forced to spend $20 I don’t feel inclined. If whoever owns this cares about their staff make the card minimum reasonable so they get tips. No thanks.

Yelp
I've gone here many times on my trip in Shelter Island. The sundaes are delicious! If I could live off of just sundaes from Tuck Shop I would. Lots of flavors available and each one looks delicious. It is a small area but seating is relatively good for what room they have. The workers are very kind and helpful. You can also get quarts or pints of the ice cream or get ice cream sandwiches. You can even hire the Tuck Truck for events which seems great!

Yelp
Pretty good ice cream, but they don't keep their Google Maps hours up to date leading customers to never know if they're actually open or not. Google says open "everyday from 11am-11pm", but that never seems to be the case. Long and frustrating moving day finished at about 10:15pm, and the whole family was happy Tuck's was still open (according to Google), just for the door to be locked, lights still on, even the cashier at the register to tell us, through the door, that they're closed. Seems like a pretty easy fix to avoid letting down potential / returning customers. Funny that they update their hours on Yelp, but not Google Maps. Place could use some repairs in terms of ambiance. Nothing crazy, but even some fresh paint would do the job. Attention to detail seems to be the biggest shortcoming for Tuck Shop

Yelp
Fun local ice cream shop on Shelter Island. Pretty sure there aren't many options to choose from (especially open after 8pm or so). There was a decent but quick-moving line and a little wait. The workers were nice and there were some pretty cool flavor choices. Was it the best ice cream ever? No it was pretty standard so no complaints there. Definitely seems like the go-to ice cream shop on this side of the island. They have both hard and soft ice creams which is always a plus. I was just visiting Shelter Island so I'm not from the area but this place is not cheap. But not many places are around here!

Yelp
Ice cream at this Shelter Island spot was mediocre and overpriced. For better service and a true "homemade ice cream experience," head to Whales Tale instead. Unfortunately, rude teenagers affected the service quality here. Their snickering as we left was hard to ignore. Okay ice cream, but service definitely needs work.

Yelp
Its open on july 10, 2020. I got 2scoops of ice cream(vanilla and pistachio) and a shake(something coffee flavor, espresso chip?forgot the name). Ice cream and shake were very delicious and employees were very nice. I could try some flavors. Theres plenty of seats outside.

Yelp
So delicious. Clean, fun, kids love it. Megan is #1

Yelp
Omg get the vanilla soft serve....best I've ever had. Service amazing. Went back to see if the regular ice cream is as good. Peanut butter to die for!

William S.

Yelp
Horrible experience. We expected to wait Memorial Day weekend but this was ridiculous. There is no ice cream menu on the wall and none of the flavors are labeled so every customer has to ask the server about each ice cream to make a decision which makes the wait time 10x longer. The ice cream was also sub par and they use supermarket brands like a Dolly Madison. Won't go there again

Melissa L.

Yelp
Cute shop! Lots of flavors to choose from and soft serve! There is something for everyone. Service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
Can't say I had super high expectations walking in but was hopeful as it was cute outside and seemed to be one of the only locations on the island. Bought myself and my husband a shake each and we were both pretty disappointed. Mine was chocolate and it was super sweet and really thin. They put way too much chocolate syrup in it. Husband said his wasn't great either (vanilla). Next time I'll wait until I get back off the island to grab one.

Yelp
Adorable old fashioned place, amazing ice cream! Lovely staff, all the girls who work here are very friendly and well educated about their products. There are lots of flavors to choose from including frozen yogurt, vegan sorbet, slushies, soft serve, and a decent amount of toppings. It may seem a little pricey if you're not accustomed to the area but you cannot get cheaper ice cream anywhere in the hamptons. It's very obviously a locally owned place and definitely somewhere I'd want to support.

Yelp
They have a nice selection of ice cream. The staff are very nice. When the line gets long the staff keeps the line moving. Though recently I had a bad experience at the Tuck Shop. The staff were great. It was the product they were selling that has made me not want to return. The ice cream had a bad after taste. Not sure how long the ice cream had been in the freezer. Remember this is Shelter Island not much traffic. Also my cone had a very soapy taste to it. My dad even had the same problem. I have many great memories at the Tuck Shop especially in the video game arcade. This is the third time I have had bad ice cream at the Tuck Shop. Sorry Tuck Shop three strikes your out.

Yelp
This place is cute! I've been here a handful of times and have been happy. I have to say it is a little overpriced but there aren't many places on shelter island so there's no competition. They might have taken more advantage of that but it's relatively reasonable considering. I don't think they make their ice cream there but it's all right. The flavors are still good but not extraordinary. They have a lot of crazy colored ones for kids too like Superman and Birthday Cake. Every time I go it's super busy but they move the line along quickly so I really appreciate that. The employees are typically teenage girls so it adds to the neighborhood vibe. They have some cool old school decor as well. It feels very authentic and not pretentious AT ALL which I love. I love the outdoor benches you can sit on if it's nice out. There are about 15 parking spots too so that's not something you have to worry about. I tried the froyo once and it was too grainy/melty/ super sweet so I would just stick with the ice cream if I were you. Also they only take CASH so make sure you are prepared to shell it out. 4 ice creams will probably run you $20 if you dont get toppings.

Yelp
An absolute must if you're visiting shelter island! This locally owned place has been an island staple since I can remember. Extensive flavor selection including various brands of hard ice cream and soft serve. I got a medium with two flavors and it was almost more than I could eat! The workers seemed about high school aged and they were explaining that most of the employees are locals and it's many people's first job. Can't wait for the summer!

Yelp
This was possibly the worst ice cream place I have been too. Our bill came to $14 for 2 one scoops of ice cream which would be fine if it were delicious. My sundae was a puddle of thick fudge and caramel just filled to the top, they have no fresh fruit or anything to add to them either. Ice cream was par----I don't know I just usually leave an ice cream stand being happy and this one it wasn't happening!

Yelp
The best home made ice cream in long island not just shelter island the peanut butter is fab but all good. U have to try it

Yelp
Tuck Shop was excellent. One of my sons ordered Superman Ice Cream. My other son ordered classic Moose Tracks Ice Cream.I ordered Moose Tracks Ice Cream as well. and my wife ordered Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream with wet walnuts and hot fudge. The Ice Cream was high quality and delicious, they even had a nut-free ice cream section which was very nice because one of my sons is allergic to nuts.

Yelp
My kids and I adore this quaint little old fashioned ice cream shop. The ice cream is always quite fresh and so creamy and delicious. They have very interesting flavors that you wouldn't really find anywhere else, besides Tuck. If your on Shelter Island, I'd say this is the only ice cream shop (not like there are that many other options) to check out. Enjoy it!

Mary M.

Yelp
the tuck shop is an amazing establishment. I go there every summer with my family and it gets better and better every year! The girls behind the counter are friendly and happy to help. I asked why the ice cream was pricey and they explained how they get the highest quality ice cream and make the serving sizes bigger then most establishments so the prices were not as bad as i thought considering. i had cappuccino crunch and my husband had a sundae and we both agreed it was worth the price (not to mention the calories). i will definitely be returning in the future!! can't say enough good things about this place.
google avatar

Aida L.

Yelp
Surprised they had fat free pomegranate raspberry vanilla frozen yogurt!

Dan P.

Yelp
This is the best ice cream place I have ever been to. In my mind, I don't see it as overpriced, given the amazing location you are in. It lights up specially in summer when all you need is a scoop of ice cream at night when it's hot.
google avatar

Geraldine D.

Yelp
This place is cute, but I don't even remember what I got. I think it might have been some type of caramel something? It was overpriced. I'm not sure that I would actually recommend this to someone if they asked me where to go on Shelter Island. Even though there's outdoor seating, there's not nearly enough for the number of patrons this location has. Since it's basically an establishment that you have to drive to, the fact that there is not enough seating is hazardous. If you are driving and end up buying ice cream, what do you do? So yeah, cute concept... but no.

Yelp
How could you not love this little place. Quaint old fashioned ice cream shop in a quaint old fashioned place. They are open later than most restaurants which is perfect for dessert. Love this place.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
I have a little girl, and we had a great experience at the tuck shop! My little girl got superman in a wafer cone and I got moose tracks in a cup with hot fudge! At one point my daughter dropped her ice cream so one of the girls working behind the counter came around and comforted my daughter threw away the old ice cream cone out and gave her a new one and my daughter was thrilled! I enjoyed the variety of flavors and the old fashioned style. We came back the next day and enjoyed some milkshakes! the staff was welcoming and moved the line along nicely and it was a little pricey but completely worth it!

Myrna K.

Yelp
didn't even buy ice cream......asked the young women at the counter about a brand of ice cream and if I had asked them to explain the meaning of life they couldn't have looked more confounded. same about which chocolate was the darkest?

Susannah L.

Yelp
the girls there are so sweet! i walked in and they immediately were attentive and allowed me to taste the ice cream. they had great recommendations as well, and were so friendly! the shop is locally owned and is extremely welcoming and cozy! my ice cream was superb! try the hot fudge!!!!

Aaron D.

Yelp
The ice cream is good, but nothing spectacular compared to comparable places in Manhattan for example. It is over priced, I agree with other reviewers. And atmosphere leaves something to be desired, again I agree with other reviewers. But most significantly, and the primary reason for the one star, is that the clerks were incredibly short with both me and my wife on both occasions we visited this place in Aug 2014. on these two occasions there were no other customers waiting, so that could not be the justification for the rude behavior. One clerk ignored my wife's friendly greeting. When my wife asked for a sample from a bucket that was almost empty, the clerk said "that bucket is empty anyway" (it wasn't) and refused to provide a sample. There was no "hello", "thank you", "goodbye", "sorry" or any other gesture that our business was appreciated on either occasion. Not even a faint smile. The clerks just put ice cream in the cups and quickly collected cash. I said thank you after paying and there was silence on both occasions. We live in Manhattan so we are used to the occasional hurried service. But these clerks, a few young ladies probably in their teens, seemed to want to go out of their way to show attitude. Will not return.
