Yelp
We have been visiting LBI every summer for 20 years. This year we visited as a group of 10 and left feeling underwhelmed. Tuckers is one of the usual restaurants we visit, but unfortunately the value is just no longer there for us.
What we did like:
- Great views and outdoor area upstairs
- Attentive staff and service
- Clean and good atmosphere
What we did not love:
- Prices.... I am fine paying a premium if the quality justifies it, but unfortunately it did not meet our expectations for $30+ entrees
- Quality.... We had a few dishes that were good, but the others really missed the mark with one needing to be sent back.
What we ordered:
- Various cocktails... all reasonably priced, creative and overall good quality.
- 12 Oysters... good quality and fresh tasting with a nice presentation.
- Calamari... these were okay, slightly overcooked and very thinly sliced. For $17 I was expecting a bigger portion.
- Crab Cake(2x).... At $39, this one was our favorite entree at the table. This was 1 generously sized crab cake on a bed of cabbage and what looked to be frozen corn with a Thai style peanut sauce. I was a bit skeptical at first about the peanut sauce, but honestly it worked.
- Tuna... this one was a medium sized portion of tuna over a bed of rice and veggies. It had a nice sear and well cooked. This was the second favorite, but at $41 it was not one to write home about.
- Pulled pork sandwich.... This one was apparently decent.
- Chopped Salad $16 add Chicken $9.... This one was straight up bad. It was a bowl of roughly chopped iceberg lettuce, some sliced tomatoes, bacon bits, and what might have been BBQ flavored tortilla chips. I don't even want to talk about the way over cooked chicken. Stay away from this one.
- Flounder piccata... For $38 we got a plate of mushy white flounder on a bed of white risotto with some chunks of white crab meat, smothered in a white lemony caper sauce. Honestly my family never sends anything back, but this one had to be sent back a quarter of the way through and we didn't ask for another one. The manager did come to out and ask what was wrong was very apologetic and took it off the bill which was very nice, again the staff was great.
Final thoughts:
- While Tuckers offers great views, attentive service, and a pleasant atmosphere, the inconsistent food quality and high prices left us feeling underwhelmed. I don't want to write it off yet, maybe we just had an off night which happens. The burgers that other tables had looked good, so maybe we will be back to try those.
