The Best Restaurants In Little Italy And University Village

"Get your fix of tuk tuk-themed decor and Indian snacks at Tuk Tuk Indian Street Food. The menu at this colorful counter-service spot is long and covers everything from samosa chaat to dum biryani to a whole section of “Bombay-style” South Indian dishes like paav bhaji dosa. But stick to the chaat (and head to Siri across the street for dosas instead). Tuk Tuk is open until midnight every night except Monday, so swing by for an afternoon or late-night snack among UIC students, a mix of Bollywood and pop music, and cans of Thums Up." - veda kilaru, adrian kane

Tuk Tuk Indian Street Food - Review - University Village - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Get your fix of tuk tuk-themed decor and Indian snacks at Tuk Tuk Indian Street Food. The menu at this colorful counter-service University Village spot is long and covers everything from samosa chaat to dum biryani to a whole section of “Bombay-style” South Indian dishes like paav bhaji dosa. Portions are on the smaller side, and some dishes taste like they were cooked from frozen. Your best bet is to get a few things and stick to the chaat like well-spiced (and stuffed) dahi puri, flaky roti rolls, and rich aloo paneer parathas. Tuk Tuk is open until midnight every night except Monday, so swing by for an afternoon or late-night snack among UIC students, a mix of Bollywood and pop music, and cans of Thums Up. photo credit: Veda Kilaru" - Veda Kilaru

Google
No frills, counter service establishment for authentic Indian street food. The mysore dosa had a nice toasty flavor with a good subtle tang though it was overly crispy in some spots. The mysore paste was decent: mildly spicy and garlicky. The potato filling was tasty but had an unnatural shade of red potentially from food coloring. The sambar was flavorful and the usage of drumstick/moringa was an impressive authentic element. However, it leaned a bit oily and could’ve used more tang. The coconut chutney had a pleasant kick of spice but the strong taste of rancid oil really threw it off. Samosa chaat was fantastic with the most hearty, delicious chole and generous toppings. The curries here were mediocre. Come for the street food and you wouldn't be disappointed.

A cozy restaurant serving Indian fusion food close to UIC (west or medical school) We tried their chicken tikka roll, non veg bowl, Dahi bhalla, chai. Service was reasonably fast. They gave lots of take out orders.

We arrived at 3:30 PM because Apple Maps showed the place as open, but it actually opens at 4 PM. We waited outside in the cold until they opened. We ordered the veg cheese grill sandwich, which mentioned “boiled potato” in the description, but when we got it, there was none. When we asked the service staff, they casually said it was a printing mistake ,no offer to replace or fix the order. We also tried the chole bhature, but the taste was noticeably different from our last visit—not as good. When I asked for a side of onion and a slice of lime, I was told there would be an extra charge, which felt disappointing considering the service. What’s more surprising is that just yesterday, we had a completely different experience with a different staff member who provided excellent service. Overall, a letdown this time compared to our previous visit.

simply horrendous. i’ve been here before and the food was really good. but they’ve gone downhill. the only flavor i could taste in the paneer was salt. the samosa chaat was okay but i’ve definitely had better. chole batora was mid. i only ate it because i was hungry. please save your money and spend it elsewhere.

Tuk Tuk Indian Street Food on Taylor Street is truly a gem! The hospitality here is amazing — you instantly feel welcome the moment you walk in. The cashier, especially, stands out with how genuine, attentive, and kind he is; he really takes care of every customer like family. The food is just as impressive. The Onion Cheese Chilly Dosa was packed with flavor and perfectly crisp, and the Tikki Chaat had the perfect balance of spice and freshness. Their Mango Lassi is one of the best I’ve had — rich, smooth, and refreshing. Highly recommend this spot if you’re looking for authentic flavors and warm service. Will definitely be coming back!

Google
I was recommended Tuk Tuk Indian Street Food, and honestly, it did not disappoint! The prices were pretty solid, especially for a city-style restaurant, and the food was so good. We tried a bunch of different things—veggie spring rolls, dosa, paneer burji wrap, veggie sandwich, gulab jamun, mango lassi—and honestly, everything was delicious. Like, I’d order all of it again. My top favorites were definitely the mango lassi, gulab jamun, spring rolls, dosa, and the veggie uttapam. Everything was super flavorful and tasted so fresh. Some of the dishes had a bit of a kick, so if you like spicy food, you’ll definitely enjoy it here. The atmosphere is very casual, with around 6-7 tables inside. It’s bright, colorful, and has a fun vibe. You order at the counter, and they bring the food out to you. The service was good—nothing over the top, but everything came out fresh and in a timely manner. If you’re craving Indian street food, I’d highly recommend checking this place out. Great flavors, fresh food, and a chill vibe—definitely worth it!

Google
Had a great experience at Tuk Tuk Indian Street Food on Taylor Street. I tried the Chicken Tikka Masala Thali and the Mango Lassi, and both were really good. The thali had great flavors — the chicken was cooked perfectly, the sauce was rich without being too heavy, and all the sides complemented the meal really well. The mango lassi was fresh, not overly sweet, and just the right way to end the meal. What really stood out though was the service. The cashier, who’s originally from Pune, Maharashtra, made the whole experience even better. He was welcoming, attentive, and genuinely cared about making sure everyone was taken care of. It’s clear he takes pride in his work, and it made a real difference. You don’t always come across that kind of hospitality, and it left a lasting impression. Definitely recommend checking this place out if you’re in the area — both for the food and the way they treat their customers.

I've been curious about this place for a while, I love Indian food and they have such a range of street food offerings, items I've been wanting to try! We will definitely be back, everything we had was delicious, hot and freshly made. The restaurant itself was small, bright, clean and cozy. Not a bad place for a lunch date, many people came in for pick up orders but we decided to sit and dine in. Samosas are generously sized and you get two per order, same for the paratha. Sauces were flavorful and added the necessary touch. My husband had the chicken Tikka roll wrap, it's small but yummy. I had the chicken chatpata sandwich and it was huge - three slices of bread and sprinkled with cheese on top. It was delicious! Next time we will try the dosa menu or one of the chaat options. So much to choose from!

Yelp
This place has become a go-to for Indian street food as it's close by to where I am. I've been here a few times and almost every time they only accept cash or Zelle which is a bit of an inconvenience. The food takes a while to come out but I'll take that in exchange for freshly made food any day. The place is small with a few tables. This time around, we tried the cheese pav bhaji and chole bhature. They were both great! The bhatuta is huge!! (my hand on top for size comparison in the pic) I will continue to go here and try all the dishes!

Yelp
Located right in Littly Italy on Taylor street, if you're looking for something different, something savory and snacky, try out Indian Street food. At TukTuk, there's a pretty good selection of street food. We went with chaats, lots of crispy puffed rice, soft chickpeas/potatoes, saucy, spicy, sweet sauces, a variety of textures all in a bite. Tried both the Samosa chaat and Tikki chaat - think I preferred the samosa because it felt more satisfying. We also got pani puri which had 6 pieces (online menu shows 8). Love the concept, great for the UIC locale. Wish the portions were bigger! Way too small for what they're charging.. Machine was not working, so it was cash only at the time.

Yelp
Absolutely freakishly delicious. Mayuresh suggested Dahi Puri; little bursting bites of heaven in your mouth. Kheema roll was fantastic with yummy red chutney, perfect. And samosa chaat is like an Indian version of chilaquiles; repurposed deliciousness. Fantastic late night food. Great find!

Yelp
Super nice spot on Taylor street! I came on a Tuesday afternoon, the vibe is pretty chill, the staff are friendly. We ordered the chicken tikka bowl, chicken tikka roll, and masala dosa. We also got chai. Everything was yummy, and I especially loved the sauce that came with the dosa. It was also very well priced, with most items under $10. I would definitely come again if I'm in the area.

Yelp
I was really not a fan of this place. Tuktuk is a recently opened Indian street food restaurant in the Little Italy area. The interior is trendy and casual, and it's a counter service place with pretty quick turnaround. I ordered the dahi puri which was pretty good, but pricier than it should have been in my opinion. The dosa was not good- avoid. The peanut chutney was terrible and the sambar was also mediocre. The chicken tikka roll was also not good- it was loaded with a mayonnaise based sauce that just really did not go well with the chicken tikka and paratha roll. The Bombay grill sandwich was solid but not great. The kicker for me is how pricey this place was. For a "street food" place with smaller snack like portions, between two people we spent around $40 which is really not worth it. I would not recommend this place- there are better "Indian street food" places on Devon and definitely in the suburbs.

Yelp
New indian street food spot in University Village. I loved how expansive the menu was (had a ton of different chaats, snacks, and lunch options to choose from). The inside of restaurant is also cute, with a fun mural on the wall. The food itself is okay; i honestly was expecting a bit bigger portions for the price. Pani puri is one of my favorite indian street food snacks, and i was a bit disappointed with the quantity and flavor of TukTuk's. Have also tried their lunch bowls which were good, but again a bit on the smaller side. Will continue to try other menu items, because there really ain't too many other indian street food concepts near this area of town ( really convenient for students/ staff who work near UIC).

Yelp
Aloo paratha- 5/5 (delicious!) Aloo paneer paratha-5/5 (very good, if they could add more paneer that would be even better) Chole bhature- 3/5 (the bhatura was good, but the chole had a lot of ginger & garam masala, need to tune that down) Overall, will try more stuff from here!

Yelp
The food is decent quality, but on the pricey side, especially considering the portion sizes being served. Would definitely not consider portion sizes "generous". Chicken Tikka Masala for $14 came with just 3-4 small pieces of chicken. Not sure if I will back.

Yelp
Chai was fire! Food was made fresh from scratch(don't mind the price) and Myuresh service was amazing! ( I hope I didn't butcher his name!)

Yelp
really good Indian food. We came here on a Friday night and it's packed. They also got a lot of to go order too, you constantly see delivery guys coming in. The somosa is really good, very spicy, but I love it. masala wrap, cheese dosa a bit on the salty side. Mango lassi is great, my kids' favorite

Yelp
Loved the Indian style street food here. So much flavors and spices that reminded me of my trip to India. The service was good and such amazing tabletops.

Yelp
I ordered from them on uber eats and the order was incomplete. I called them and they said that they can't help me and I need to call uber eats. Terrible response

Yelp
enjoyed their veggie Dil Khush for lunch today, dined in, it was excellent! Spicy but not at all extreme, and a good lunch-size portion.

Yelp
The authentic Masala Chai taste, this place nailed it ! And served , with a smile ! Love it

Yelp
The service was quick and accommodating! When I arrived the lady at the cash register let me know that the card reader was down but gave me the alternative of a Zelle address! Then the food came surprisingly quick! Within 5-8 minutes I was eating. I ordered the veg cheese grilled sandwich and it was great! It had a little of a spicy kick to it but not too bad to where it could be considered overwhelming. The restaurant is clean and has a lot of seating for such a small area! Overall it was a great experience!

Alison C.

Yelp
It was...fine? A nice change from heavier, large Indian dishes but we didn't think anything was really phenomenal. Kacchi dabeli was my favorite item, there was a lot of spice, which I liked. The pani puri were good - these are harder to find in my opinion so they are always a treat. Dahi puri had too much yogurt for my liking, so the textures and flavors weren't as balanced. The masala dosa and onion chili uttapam were bland somehow. Even the sambar/sauce that came with both dishes just had very little taste. The young woman working at the counter was very nice. Be prepared to refill your water a hundred times if you dine in because the styrofoam cups are itty bitty!

Yelp
Visiting from out of town and asked our host where to get good Indian food. She didn't hesitate and drove us here. This place did not disappoint! Loved everything I had. Still getting used to this BYOB thing all over Chicago, but it won't stop me from coming back here the next time I'm in town.

Yelp
Tried a few dishes for takeout! Their paneer and cheese paratha was really good and they adjusted the spice level to make it non spicy! We also got their samosas which were delicious and fresh! My favorite was the veg cheese grill sandwich.. this is the closest I've had that tastes like the sandwiches you get in Bombay! We had their paneer roll as well which was good. Would love to try some more things when we get a chance.

Yelp
Went to this place for a mango smoothie...well atleast that's what they advertised it as on the building outside. I started to leave when i walked in because it had a dirty wet smell. They gave me a pre-made lassi drink from the refrigerator said it's the same as a smoothie then refused to give me a refund. Very rude , unprofessional and smelly.

Dedra B.

Yelp
I had the Chicken Chatpata sandwich and it was absolutely terrible. It was a three tiered sandwich with what appeared to be a smashed boiled potato on the first layer middle layer was cucumber and onion the bottom layer was filled with a very small amount of diced flavorless chicken..it was extremely bland and the ingredients did not mesh well at all.. The bread was cheap or possibly stale... I was so disappointed this was definitely not worth 13 bucks.. It was an awful sandwich.. I took one bite and threw it out! I will never order from this place again.

Yelp
This was a great place. I had never eaten Indian Street food before and all of it was delicious. Served in a tidy simple setting. We asked for advice on what to choose and were given a feast of flavors. I'll not only be back but bring our friends. Expect to be surprised.

Yelp
Food is too good. Taste and spices are perfectly balanced. An excellent Indian restaurant to visit

Yelp
The food , service and environment were absolutely amazing ! I've never had Indian street food before and highly recommend to give it a try!

Yelp
Ordered dahi poori, cheese chicken paratha, and kacchi dabeli. I really had high expectations to their food and I ordered these three most popular ones, but I got really disappointed. The chicken Paratha tastes ok but the sauce is terrible, also only tiny bit of chicken was in the flatbread. The dahi poori is not crispy and fillings are not appetizing, has stinky smell and very liquidly, the fillings are also pretty hard to put in the balls since the openings are pretty small. Kacchi dabeli is the worst of all three. On menu it's described as "smashed masala potato and peanut filled in a bun" but it actually tastes like two plain pieces of buns filled with marinara and curry sauce, the cheapest food ever. Overall, service is good, but food is too disappointing and not nutritious either.
