The Best Restaurants in Portland’s Arbor Lodge Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Named after the trademark motor sound of the popular three-wheeled scooter ubiquitous in Bangkok, Tuk Tuk is a colorful neighborhood Thai restaurant, offering both stateside staples and more uncommon specialties — we’re talking pla dook shu-shee, a deep-fried catfish dish, and hot pot-steamed shrimp. Grab takeout or dine in Tuk Tuk’s casual dining room seven days a week." - Nathan Williams

Google
Thai salads usually have so much flavor and character, but I got the vegetarian fried tofu salad here and sadly there was nothing Thai about it.

Jamey Collins

Google
I was very disappointed with my food. The chicken satay was super dry which made it difficult swallowing and the Thai BBQ Chicken was absolutely disappointing! It was very dry and had no flavor! I will not be returning to this place! The owner was very chill and friendly but the food was beyond bad!

Izaak Zawyrucha-Moore

Google
I had the Gang Mussamun (aka Massaman curry) and my partner had the Pad Kee Mao (aka Drunken noodles). My curry was awesome, sweet and spicy. My only quibble is the potatoes and carrots were a little softer than my taste, but I'm sure others like them that way. My partner's noodles were, in her words "a little sweet and spicy, with just the right amount of space and extremely delicious."

Google
Usually get take out which is always hot and accurate. Very tasty, probably one of my favorite Thai places in town and I’m pretty picky. Good sized portions.

Google
I’ve been coming here for years. The curries are delicious. The fried rice is delicious. The pad kee mao is amazing. Honestly, everything is delicious. You can’t go wrong. I always get a Thai tea, too.

Google
Tonight, I ordered a pad Thai for carryout, I requested "Thai Hot," which would mean 5/5 spice level. I really like spicy food. Unfortunately, this pad Thai is slimey, incorrectly seasoned, and NOT AT ALL spicy. The noodles are floating on a visible layer of greasy "sauce," and some of the noodles aren't cooked all the way through and are tough to chew. Just paid 15$ for food I won't eat. VERY DISAPPOINTING.

Google
Street front restaurant, parking is a little tricky, some spaces behind the restaurant to the west of it. Clean, nice warm ambiance. With the rating I was surprised to be the only one there but it was after 1230. I ordered the Spicy Thai beef salad, you get a choice of spiciness. Quick and very fresh. Large serving with lettuce, cucumber, tomato, cilantro, green onion and a generous portion of beef and tangy spicy dressing, enjoy!

Google
Great portions, great flavor, and great prices. One of my favorite Thai places in Portland so far. The restaurant is really clean and nice, and they also brought the food quickly. Lunch was good.

Yelp
Hey, updating to say the food has still been great (although one time yall messed up the spice level, we always order lvl 5 spice and one time it came with ZERO spice)...but the gentleman who was up front this time was extremely curt and borderline rude. Who am I ""picking up for?" Umm, I gave you my name and repeated it a couple times and spelled it bc you said huh? Huh? While again borderline glaring away from me... Is it because I was wearing a mask that you were upset and short? Didn't even thank me for my order? Assumed I was "just a delivery driver" picking up someone else's food? I always tip even on takeout so that couldn't be it. Maybe I shouldn't tip at all next time for takeout? Sorry dude, it's my order (and we used to order every week)...if I WERE a delivery driver I deserved more respect than to be thrown my food on the counter and turned out without so much as a thank you see you next time or a bright smile like you gave the guys in front of me... You were extremely friendly with them so idk why you were so short with me. If this is your business I'm going to recommend a little more consistent tact. The food was excellent this time.

Yelp
We ordered a large Tom kha soup with chicken, and pad kee mao to go. Very reasonably priced and the portions are massive. The owner is friendly and the restaurant seems clean and kept up. They have beer and wine too so not a bad spot to dine in and get a drink from.

Matt R.

Yelp
Food was great flavorful and not too spicy but can be made spicier. Well priced and good quality.

Yelp
We're so lucky to have this place in our neighborhood! We order from here all the time- it's a great deal, it's ready quickly and you get a ton of delicious food. Thank you Tuk Tuk!

Yelp
Always a treat to eat here. Great service and delicious food. I come back again and again!
google avatar

Yelp
Great take out. It's nothing to write home about but dependably good and reliable. I'm a big fan of the pumpkin curry. Food is always fresh and hot.
google avatar

Yelp
The three flavor fish was delicious and crispy, but very bony and hard to eat. They brought us two orders of rice in one bowl, which made it hard to take rice and eat it with the food since the plates were absolutely loaded with food. I think side plates to mix rice and food on might be a good way to make the rice more accessible but it's not a deal breaker by any means.

Yelp
Pad Thai was craaaazy good! The portion sizes are pretty large and service was great. Definitely recommend

Yelp
My food (noodle dish and salad) tasted fine and I enjoyed it, until **I BIT INTO A STONE.** I called the restaurant to report a food safety issue. The male individual who answered the phone sounded unconcerned. I tried to express to him that I wasn't interested in a refund, and my concern was about food safety. I repeatedly asked for the manager's contact information but he refused to give it to me. Not once did he ask if I was okay. Not once did he ask which dishes I ordered (so that the staff could check their ingredients). He didn't seem concerned in the slightest. As a matter of fact, after I stated that I was not interested in a refund and that this is a food safety issue, he flat out stated "stuff happens." How are large pebbles ending up in cooked food dishes? After my experience this evening, I believe this restaurant is **NOT hygienic. It seems they don't wash their produce properly. And clearly they treat their customers terribly. If they washed their produce properly and with care, I wouldn't have bit into rock. I wish I could have expressed all this to a manager, but once again the male staff member refused to assist me.

Yelp
We like this place for the food but they actively look very disappointed when asking if you can sit in the restaurant. Then we're informed the restaurant is cold because they don't turn on heat in the dining room. This is the second visit we felt discouraged to dine. With the tv going and the phone ringing non stop with orders it's probably best to just order delivery. The food is still good, that's why their phone is constantly ringing with food orders.

Yelp
Well, I was in the mood for a quick bite of Thai food and was going to be in the area so I called ahead and placed an order for takeout. The prices on THEIR WEBSITE do not match what they charge so I was surprised when my $13 was actually $16. I got the spicy basil fried rice with chicken - great spice, not too many veggies in it, but the chicken was way over cooked - it was rubbery. I also got the egg rolls .. tasted like it came pre-frozen and they just deep fried it. It was edible but not original. There are a lot of options around so I likely won't be back. They did have a good set up to protect customers - only customer touches items (fork, chopstick, sauce, etc).

T S. F.

Yelp
Holy WOW! Everything they make is just crazy way hot. Ordered a 1 spicy and two 3 spicy Pad Thai chicken dinners.. they were all the same spiciness... Crazy hot! Not the first time this problem has occurred. There are plenty of Thai restaurants in the world... will never order from this establishment again. They probably figure a 1 or a 3 is about the same... so screw you.

Shawn L.

Yelp
Hands down one of the best.. those that give bad reviews, have personal issue of just raw hate of everyone when they don't get their way...

Yelp
This place is bangin'!!! Pad Kee Mao is some of the best I've had in Portland. Generous portions, fresh ingredients & it was ready in only 10 minutes, steaming hot. Just moved into the neighborhood & this will definitely be the go-to. Don't listen to the sub 4 star rating here. These folks are making really stellar Thai food! More ppl come on here to complain than give kudos.
google avatar

Yelp
Great Pad See Ew, and above-average portions. And much better service than some other Thai places in the area.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
Why this place doesn't have 4-5 stars is beyond me. I'm a pad kee mao fanatic, I get it everywhere, all across the city, and the country. This place has some of the best! Spice is on a 1-5 scale and 3 is exactly accurate. Nice and hot. Some places a medium is a mild, but this is perfectly just above medium spicy. I love when the heat is accurate! Their website ordering wasn't working at the time, the phones were busy, so I walked down to place my order. They rushed my order once they realized I had tried ordering from home! I didn't ask, they just went above and beyond. This place is great. Food is great, owners are great. Oh, and the green curry is also fantastic.

Jay L.

Yelp
Super yummy. Service was great and kind, very funny. Place was empty while we were here but don't let that deter you! Mussaman was supreme. Hopefully will be back!

Yelp
Good portions. My wife liked the tofu soup. Nice service and food was fast. As I Cook Thai as a Fahrang is was disappointed with the drunken noodles aka pad kee mow. Seafood was over cooked and not enough Thai basil. A green vegetable would have been nice to join the mushrooms and onion. I am picky about Thai so 3 out of 5 stars is decent.

NR K.

Yelp
Really good food except for the noodles. Online ordering failed and was double charged. The restaurant would not take care of the issue. Had to go to my bank to have one of the charges canceled & refunded.

Taylor T.

Yelp
Love this place! Go there all the time. Their portions are huge, and prices are great! Highly recommend to those who want some good Thai food.

Gary H.

Yelp
My first time visiting there and my first experience with Thai food. I met there to meet and visit with relatives and I was the first to arrive. This local gem, was friendly and inviting. The hostess made me feel welcome and tended to other take out clients. My relatives helped acquaint me with foods that I might enjoy and the waitress assisted me as well. The outcome was remarkable, quality of the food above normal and the presentation although simple was excellent. Prices were a pleasant surprise as well. I highly suggest and recommend this neat little tucked away place, and know you will enjoy! Tuk Tuk

Yelp
Delicious delicious Thai but every time I go, I feel that their scale of hotness is way off. I'll order a 2 and my mouth is on fire like a 4. I eat a lot of Thai food and at Tuk Tuk, it's either no spice or fire, doesn't matter the level. I will go and get their fried spring rolls anytime though!!
google avatar

Jay G.

Yelp
Felt like these guys deserved a new review. I've gotten take away roughly 10 times since that first review...and the food has always been very, very tasty. Do they always answer the phone when I try to call in an order? No. Usually not. Is it busy when I show up, annoyed, to place an order in person? Never. In fact, the busiest I've ever seen it (ever. like...in 20+ visits) there was a couple waiting for their to-go food at the counter and ONE table was being used by a Grub Hub driver putting his customer's food in his bag. Do they still act annoyed when you call or show up? Absolutely. But the food is a 10 out of 10 every time. Bonus points for all the tofu on the menu!

Yelp
I've lived in Kenton for years and am grateful Tuktuk is in the neighborhood. Always solid delicious options and great staff!
google avatar

Nyla S.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying that I LOVE certain Thai food items!! I first visited Tuk Tuk randomly about a year and a half ago and I fell in love with the flavor of their stir fries. You choose your meat and which stir fry option you want (I always get the cashew shrimp). The flavor is spot on and I've been back many many times since then. I don't care for their tea and it sucks that the only drink I like there (cranberry juice) doesn't have a refill. I've took quite a few people here and they've also enjoyed it. I like that it's never packed in here but I HATE the location. When I open my restaurant I will definitely be in a location where my customers can park without walking around the corner. The same waiter has been here since I first came and he's kind and somewhat attentive. I wouldn't say this is the best I've had in Portland but it's definitely good and I will be back randomly whenever I go to the north side. Happy Yelping...

Yelp
I found this place using google maps, it was close to my wife work and she wanted Thai food. Man am I glad we tried this place. Best pad Thai I've had so far

Kathleen B.

Yelp
Had a really nice lunch at this place. Large amounts and variety fresh vegetables in the stir fry and lovely lo mein. Staff is friendly and professional. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Exceptional service, waiting area was extremely clean and the food came out very fast. I ordered chicken pad see ew, and he ordered chicken yakisoba. Both were very flavorful and delicious, we plan to return :)
google avatar

Cara E.

Yelp
This is my favorite Thai restaurant in the area. I rotate between get the Hot Basil Fried Rice, the Pad See Ew, and the Pumpkin Curry (seasonal). They make sure to pack in a ton of different veggies and they're never light on the protein. The staff is super friendly and speedy in their service. It's definitely a hidden gem off Lombard. They really know what they're doing with their flavors over there.

Yelp
Evil Jungle Noodles! a brilliant way to enjoy a sunny Portland afternoon. It's fun to get lost, just wandering and seeing what the world has in store for you. It's one of my favorite things about living in Portland, that it still has secrets and surprises, just waiting to be found. Like a world-class Thai restaurant just a few blocks away from my girlfriend and I's favorite art supply store, Artists & Craftsman Supply. We'd eaten at King Burrito too many times (if that's even possible), plus my GF was on the lookout for some veggie eats. Were hoping for Thai and were beginning to lose hope until Tuk Tuk pops up out of nowhere, answering our prayers in each and every way. First off, i got to try a new Thai dish i'd never even heard of. The evil jungle noodles, apart from having the best food name that isn't a Sizzle Pie pizza, is a delicious sauce-based curry served on a bed of rice noodles. The basil and red curry blend with the sweet, smooth coconut milk in the most scrumptious way, sweet and savory at the same time. Tuk Tuk's ratios were exactly on-point, with enough heat to please the fire-eaters while still letting you taste the delectable flavors. The chicken was marinated to perfection, tender as you please. My girlfriend's tofu was the same, if perhaps erring a bit on the saucy side. We were both immensely pleased, especially with a giant ice-cold Thai Iced Tea to swirl it all down with. A perfect afternoon, a pleasant surprise, a reminder to wander and get lost. Fabulous service, reasonable prices, and a bright, spacious location seal the deal. We'll be going back. We recommend you do the same if yr ever in North Portland/Mock's Crest/Saint John's, or if yr just looking for some top-notch Thai Food.

Monika P.

Yelp
I love Thai food! This was the worst Thai food I ever had and I felt sick half of the night. The waitress never came back to fill up the water glasses, it was not busy I might mention. I asked whether they could make stir fry glutenfree, but she didn't even start to try. It's made fresh, I hope, so all they need to do is not use soy sauce. Bathroom super dirty, the light switch is grimy. Yuck! Never going to go there again, that's for sure.
google avatar

Lynda Z.

Yelp
We had been to Tuk Tuk before but decided to give it another try. The first disappointment was when my husband asked for another beer and the server and I believe owner asked him if he needed a clean glass. My husband uncomfortably said yes a chilled glass would be nice. When the food finally arrived it looked and tasted like it had been sitting on the stove all day. We had to go up to the counter to get our bill . Not a good experience.
google avatar

Alejandro S.

Yelp
A bit laughable that this counts as Thai food. This restaurant wouldn't stand a chance in a more close-in area. I don't venture to NOPO much, but here's what we got: Pineapple fried rice: the vegetables look straight out of a frozen food family pack. Beef spicy salad: not spicy, very fatty beef Pad kee mao: this one was actually good enough and probably 4 star. With so many good Thai places in Portland, why come here? Check the photos
google avatar

Shaylin K.

Yelp
The food was amazing all of the dishes we ordered had great flavor and bread cuts of veg is and meat. If we didn't live 3.5 hours away it would be a must eat at again. Shoot it may be worth a road trip!
google avatar

Teri P.

Yelp
This place had favorable reviews and was close to our hotel. We hadn't eaten Thai in a while so we tried it. It was 8 pm and no one was in the place, but you will miss out if you don't give Tuk Tuk a try! Excellent dishes, exactly as pictured, generous portions, and pleasant wait staff. My pad Thai was just as ordered - slightly spicey (2 out of 5 stars), fellow diners were also very pleased. Prices were reasonable.
google avatar

Amber H.

Yelp
WAITER HAS NO COMMON SENSE! tRied to set a hot HOT ASS bowl of soup in front of my 2 year old nephew after his mother repeatedly said "can you set that elsewhere!" Or "not by the baby!" Fucking idiot...but they still have good food.

Grace J.

Yelp
The Thai tea is incredibly over sweetened. This is coming from a teen that loves sweets. This wouldn't be a big deal if their service was good. The employee that serviced us was rude and acted like his job was an option. I also called 4 times to order pickup before just driving there to order. Awful employees and mediocre food.

Sissy A.

Yelp
Fresh, nice portions... jungle curry is delicious. Best Thai spot in Kenton/st Johns
google avatar

Anna A.

Yelp
When you live in University Park / St. Johns you simply cannot be a Thai food snob. You take what you get and you like it. One could frown upon Tuk Tuk, perhaps the quality is iffy, and the pizzazz is not 100%. If this was any other town, they might receive a "B on the health rating, at best. That "B" is for better. My pad see ew always comes filled to the to-go box brim with comforting noodles and veggies. The salad rolls are what you want and expect. The pad thai is nothing crazy delicious but it gets the job done. The prices are right. The food is quickly made. You have leftovers tomorrow. It was easy to park to pick up your food. Your thai hankering is satisfied. Hot tip: If you don't ask for any kind of heat, expect a little blandness. That's what the red stuff at home is for, though.

Yelp
Happy to see it right around the corner to where I'm staying! I walked in at lunchtime. Didn't seem very busy and a few people eating a chatting. I could hear cooking noises coming from the kitchen and the cook poked her head out of the kitchen and smiled at me. I walked to the counter. The male waiter didn't acknowledge my presence and walked past me in a hurry. I stood there and he came back and asked what I wanted. Uhhh I didn't even have a chance to look at the menu (because I wasn't given one) so I asked what was popular. His response: everything. That wasn't helpful at all. It's impossible that EVERYTHING is popular. I chose the pad se eew with pork. The portion was huge, the food was piping hot and fresh. So so good. Food is great, service was mediocre. Stop watching the tv and be a little helpful, please!

Nate A.

Yelp
Generic Thai food. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here but it was serviceable. Crispy curry duck was not crispy.
google avatar

Adrian C.

Yelp
Thai always sounds good to me and I've had some good Thai in my time. Number 60 is probably the best noodles dish I have had. So tastey and always makes you happy. They get the food out quickly and it is good quality in terms of volume and taste. As far as easy week night meals look no further. If you want the best quality Thai or a fancy restaurant look elsewhere.
google avatar

Matt S.

Yelp
I love it. IMO best in nopo for Thai. $8 pad Thai is delicious and large. Currys are very good. I'll go back over and over staying happy and fed.
google avatar

tasha n.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Thai food joints. I'm pretty discerning when it comes to American-Asian food. Quality and taste are very important to me. And I'm typically a veggie-option type of person. This place satisfies all my demands. They run awesome specials apart from their regular menu which has all the Thai cravings. The special I had was a curry pad Thai. So good! I also had the Rock and Rolls and they are so much better than your average spring roll.
google avatar

Stephanie K.

Yelp
I order take out from this place when I'm desperate for Thai food. I usually will always get the Chicken Pad Thai and it's really good! And the portion sizes are pretty great. I can split it up into two meals if I want to, which is something I like to do when I can! It's a little expensive but I think it's worth it!
google avatar

Tiara P.

Yelp
Overall Tuk Tuk was a wonderful experience. We tried this place based on a recommendation from a friend and it didn't disappoint. The pumpkin curry and red curry were on point. Their pad kee mow was also excellent. The flaming beef was worth ordering just to see the waiter bring your plate out on fire. The spice level is true to order. The one thing that could be improved is the service. But I topically don't mind at all if a server isn't interested because I'm there for the food. As long as I eventually get what I order and it tastes good, I'm happy. Good find.
google avatar

Gus P.

Yelp
If I could rate this restaurant a negative I would but I can't. My husband and I were trying to look for a place to eat with our one year old and found this place close to our hotel. Read the reviews and liked what I read as we drove past the place it looked empty so we figured that it was closed but we'd seen someone walking out so we decided to go ahead and give it a try. We walked into the place and there was no greeting and but I gave the waiter a chance because he was helping someone out. My husband told me that there was a sign that said to please seat yourself so I told him okay let's grab a high chair and let's choose a table as we were about to take a seat the waiter turned to us and said we're only doing take out mind you we had gotten there at 8pm and they close at 10pm.
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
My daughter took me to Tuk Tuk because she knows I like Thai food. I've been back several times and I have been satisfied each time. I like the way they prepare the food and their prompt service. Nothing fancy just a good restaurant with good food and pleasant service. I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Decent neighborhood Thai food. I've only had take away, never dined in. I always get the pad thai, even though the chicken is usually overcooked.....but the Thai ice tea is delicious!
